Mex. The total transport rates of bed material measured by the steady-dilution and spatial-integration procedures were within the range of transport rates computed by the modified Einstein procedure. Lateral dispersion of the tracer particles increased with increase in the size of the tracer particles, whereas longitudinal dispersion decreased. The velocities of the tracer particles decreased with increase in the size of the tracer particles; dependence on particle diameter was large for the small particles, small for the large particles. Average altitude of land surface at the landfill is less than 10 feet. About 1000 tons of solid waste and about 200,000 gallons of digested sewage sludge are disposed of daily at the landfill. The velocity of ground-water flow through the 23-foot thick surficial aquifer northeast from the landfill toward Old Tampa Bay probably ranges from 1 to 10 feet per year, and downward velocity through the confining bed is about 0.00074 foot per day. The horizontal and vertical flow velocities indicate that leachate moves slowly downgradient, and that leachate has not yet seeped through the confining bed after 12 years of landfill operation. Untreated surface run-off from the site averages about 15 inches per year, and ground-water outflow averages about 3.3 inches per year. These quadrangles are in southwest New Mexico and include the well-known mineral deposits of the Silver City area. The sampling was designed to gain semidetailed information on the metal-anomaly characteristics of the strongly mineralized area surrounding Silver City, New Mexico, and to seek geochemical clues for the continuation of these mineral deposits beneath overlying Tertiary volcanic rocks to the north.&nbsp;</p><p>The data obtained within areas of known mineral deposits provide information on the metallogenic processes and metal suites that both relate and distinguish metal systems. Evaluation of this information relative to the regional geologic framework and the distribution of known mineral deposits will result in the identification of additional target areas for exploration, as well as further our understanding of the geochemical characteristics of mineralized areas. Extrapolation of models developed from the study of areas of known, exposed mineralization to areas covered by Tertiary volcanic rocks, such as the northern part of this tier of quadrangles, is a promising procedure for continuing research into geochemical-anomaly characteristics of covered mineral deposits.&nbsp;</p><p>Preliminary interpretation of the data indicates that the southern part of the area in which Paleozoic-Mesozoic rocks and mineral deposits are exposed, should be reassessed to the classification and genesis of some of the deposits and to the types of mineral commodities that may be present. Some wholly new exploration targets within these areas are also indicated by some of the data. In addition, geochemical clues to buried mineral deposits, possibly representing continuation northward of some features of the Silver City mining district, have been observed in data from the northern, Tertiary volcanic areas. The meanings of these clues are still speculative.</p><p>For this study, 917 stream-sediment and 921 stream-sediment concentrate samples were collected. The stream-sediment-concentrate samples, which consist of heavy minerals, were split into magnetic and nonmagnetic fractions, each of which was analyzed. This resulted in the analysis of 1,842 heavy-mineral and 917 sieved stream-sediment samples.&nbsp;</p><p>Analytical results for all of the sample types are summarized statistically on table 1 and The injection system consists of a primary injection well, a standby injection well, and two deep monitor wells all completed open hole in the lower limestone of the Floridan aquifer and one shallow-monitor well completed in the upper limestone of the Floridan aquifer. Two of the monitor wells and the standby injection well are used to observe hydraulic and geochemical effects of waste injection in the injection zone at locations 8,180 feet northeast, 1,560 feet south, and 1,025 feet southwest of the primary injection well. The shallow-monitor well, used to observe any effects in the first permeable zone above the 200-foot-thick confining bed, is 28 feet north of the primary injection well.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Since injection began in June 1975, 607 million gallons of treated industrial liquid waste with a pH of 4.6 to 6.3 and containing high concentrations of nitrate, organic nitrogen and carbon have been injected into a saline-water-filled limestone aquifer. Wellhead pressure at the injection well in June 1977 average 137 pounds per square inch and the hydraulic pressure gradient was 0.53 pound per square inch per foot of depth to the top of the injection zone. Water levels rose from 36 to 74 feet at the three wells used to monitor the injection zone during the 25-month period. The water level in the shallow-monitor well declined about 8 feet. No changes were detected in the chemical character of water from the shallow-monitor well and deep-monitor well-north. Increases in concentration of bicarbonate and dissolved organic carbon were detected in water from the deep-test monitor well in February 1976 and at the standby injection well in August 1976. In addition to increases in bicarbonate and dissolved organic carbon, sulfate, total organic nitrogen, and total nitrogen concentrations have also increased substantially in samples from these wells. Nitrogen gas concentrations in water samples  collected at the three deep-monitor wells ranged from 19 to 176 milligrams per liter, methane from 4.5 to 11.4 milligrams per liter, and carbon dioxide from 7.7 to 44 milligrams per liter. The spectrum of units varies from the oldest to the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW219995260 BCX8\">youngest</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW219995260 BCX8\"> on the planet. A hydrologic unit composed of drift and the upper part of an underlying sandstone sequence provides ground-water inflow. Ground water enters as springflow and as leakage upward through the organic wetland soils.</p>\n<p>The average annual water budget for the wetland was based on the 3 years 1974 through 1976. Although 1976 and 1975 were years of more than average precipitation, and 1976 was a year of less than average precipitation, the 3-year average precipitation was only slightly less than the long-term average. Inflow was composed of direct precipitation (7 percent), surfacewater inflow from the adjacent uplands (h percent), and ground-water inflow (89 percent). Ground-water inflow included springflow, upward leakage, and flow from artesian wells used in the Nevin State Fish Hatchery and discharged as effluent. Outflow was composed of streamflow (92 percent) and evapotranspiration (8 percent). The amount of water stored in the organic soils varied by only 1 inch during the study. Some ground water flowed beneath the wetland but did not discharge within the study area.</p>\n<p>Nutrients were contained in ground-water inflow, surface-water inflow, and precipitation. Ninety-five percent of the nitrogen that entered the wetland (1974 through 1976) entered in ground-water inflow, which included the hatchery discharge. Two percent was from precipitation, and 3 percent entered in surface-water inflow. Sixty-six percent of the phosphorus input was from ground water, 31 percent from surface water, and 3 percent from precipitation. Some nutrients were retained because only 79 percent as much nitrogen and 93 percent as much phosphorus left the wetland in streamflow as entered it.</p>\n<p>Sediment was also retained. Only 20 percent as much sediment (1974 through 1976) left the wetland in streamflow as entered it. Sediment was deposited where surface-water inflow from upland areas flowed onto the wetland surface and along stream channels.</p>\n<p>Inflows and outflows are quantified, and nutrient and sediment sources are identified, with the result that the effect of proposed land-use changes in the basin can be evaluated. Land-use practices that affect the wetland include drainage, urbanization, and water-supply development. The dynamic processes which produce sand in the nearshore environments are very slow, and removal of this material would cause a depletion of beaches upon which the island economy is predicated. A search for offshore sources was begun in September 1977. This program was set up for three levels of activity. The first was a broad survey of the intershelf area; the second was a detailed investigation of target areas; the third phase, a study of the sediment dynamics, is presently underway. As a result of the first survey, seven target areas were found. Three of these were examined in detail during the second phase, which showed that two areas contain significant deposits of sand. The 'double' deposit on the southwestern coast of St. Thomas contains an estimated 30x10 6 cubic meters of fine sand (0.3-0.5 mm). In the central area, a deposit near Buck Island contains an estimated 12x10 6 cubic meters of material. The sand in the second area is slightly coarser. The textural signature of these deposits is very close to that of the sand found on the beaches, which has been used in the past for construction. Even so, the actual establishment of the statistical classes, or \"signatures,\" is one of the relatively more costly operations involved. Analysts have therefore been seeking cost-saving signature extension techniques that would accept training data acquired for one time or place and apply them to another. Opportunities to extend signatures occur in preprocessing steps and in the classification steps that follow. In the present example, land cover classes were derived by the simplest and most direct form of signature extension: Classes statistically derived from a Landsat scene for the Puget Sound area, Wash., were applied to the Portland area, Oreg., using data for the next Landsat scene acquired less than 25 seconds down orbit. Many features can be recognized on the reduced-scale version of the Portland land cover map shown in this report, although no statistical assessment of its accuracy is available.</p>\n<p>The cost of classifying 5,607 square kilometers (2,165 sq. mi.) in the Portland area was less than 8 cents per square kilometer ($0.0788, or $0.2041 per square mile). It straddles the Laurentian Divide, which separates Hudson Bay and Lake Superior drainage. The topography exhibits a southwesterly trending lineation that parallels the strike of southeastward-dipping bedrock units and the southwestward direction of ice movement during Pleistocene glaciation. For this study, the region has been divided into seven physiographic areas based on geomorphic features related to the bedrock surface, glacial deposits, and hydrogeologic significance.</p>\n<p>The surficial geology is largely a result of two southwestward advances of the Rainy Lobe of the Laurentian ice sheet. The Toimi Drumlin Field, the oldest glacial deposit, covers much of the southern part of the region. It is bounded on the north by the Vermilion Moraine Complex, an east-west trending series of terminal and recessional moraines that mark the southerly extent of the second advance of the Rainy Lobe. Analysis of the data followed three approaches. First, the constituent concentrations were analyzed. Average concentrations of suspended sediment, settleable solids, and fecal coliform bacteria generally exceeded levels expected for secondary waste-treatment plant effluent, whereas biochemical oxygen demand concentrations were lower than expected. The second analytical approach established correlations and bivariate regression relationships between constituents for individual storms in each basin, for all storms in each basin, and for all storms in all basins. Generally, correlation coefficients decreased when progressing from data for individual storms in each basin, to data for all storms in each basin, to data for all storms in all basins. In the third approach, storm yields for 10 constituents were related to basin and precipitation characteristics by use of multiple-linear-regression techniques. Storm yields for suspended sediment varied by about four orders of magnitude.
