The potentiometric surface of the shallow aquifer is about 45 feet higher than the potentiomettic surface of the Floridan aquifer; hence water flows by gravity from the shallow aquifer to the Floridan aquifer through the well 'connecting' the two aquifers. Continuous flow measurement over 10 months shows the well discharge varies seasonally and averages slightly more than 50 gallons per minute. Observation wells show that, except for seasonal variation, water levels within the area of influence have reached steady state within measurable limits. Vertical anisotropy in the shallow aquifer is apparently caused by the shape and (or) arrangement of the sand grains that comprise the shallow aquifer, rather than because of distinct confining layers of different lithology. Transmissivity of the shallow aquifer at the site is about 600 square feet per clay. Extensive dewatering of wetlands in east Orange County by connector wells alone probably is not feasible. Nevertheless, large amounts of water could be channeled to the Floridan aquifer by connector wells. The results of the connector well experiment imply that water is being captured from evapotranspiration and interception of water that would have discharged to swamps in the vicinity of the connector well. However, the data available from this experiment do not permit a quantitative expression of the net gain in recharge to the Floridan aquifer resulting from operation of the connector well.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2210","usgsCitation":"Bush, P.W., 1983, Connector well experiment to recharge the Floridan aquifer, east Orange County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2210, iii, 26 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2210.","productDescription":"iii, 26 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138094,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2210/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25828,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2210/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b19e4b07f02db6a7f59","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bush, Peter W.","contributorId":57820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bush","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143173,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A total of 23 rainfall-simulation runs were made on five small plots representing four representative soil-vegetation types of the study watershed in eastern Colorado. Data for three observed rainfall-runoff events were recorded by gages on four of the plots. Data from all events were used to develop best-fit parameters of the Green and Ampt infiltration equation. The hydraulic conductivity of the transmission zone, KSAT, grossly controlled the goodness of fit of all modeling attempts. Results of fitting KSAT to reproduce runoff from rainfall simulator runs and results of fitting KSAT to reproduce runoff from observed rainfall-runoff events are inconsistent. Variations in results from site to site and at different times of the year were observed. Sedimentation in the seaway was controlled by uplift in source areas to the west, subsidence in the basin, and eustatic sea level changes. Sedimentation rates were relatively high, averaging about 220m/million years; marine cycles of deposition occurred in northwestern Colorado that correspond to the Claggett, Judith River, and Bearpaw regressions of Montana. \r\n\r\nThe upper Mancos shale and lower Iles Formation can be subdivided into ten facies based on five criteria: (1) Lithology, texture, and thickness relations (geometry); (2) sedimentary structures and contacts; (3) trace and body fossils; (4) paleocurrent data; and (5) adjoining facies (underlying, overlying, and laterally). Each facies has distinct attributes which characterize a specific depositional environment. Environments represented by facies include (A) offshore shoreface transition (prodelta); (B) shallow marine sand bars; (C) destructional delta front; (D) constructional delta front (sheet sands and mouth bars); (E) beach foreshore-shoreface deposits; (F) interdistributary marsh and swamp deposits and fluvial floodplain; (G) distributary channels; (H) crevasse splays; (J) fluvial streams; and (K) tidally influenced distributary channel. \r\n\r\nFacies analysis of outcrop data shows that transgressions and regressions occurred, some of which are related to major (eustatic) sea level changes and others that reflect only local causes. These events in northwestern Colorado are summarized in following chapters, and an attempt is made to show their relationship to broad regional patterns of sedimentation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83820","usgsCitation":"Kiteley, L., 1983, Facies analysis of the lower cycles of the Mesaverde Group (Upper Cretaceous) in northwestern Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-820, iv, 122 p.  :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83820.","productDescription":"iv, 122 p.  :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151570,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0820/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49124,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0820/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f88c8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kiteley, L.W.","contributorId":46531,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kiteley","given":"L.W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181292,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Chromite is not evenly disseminated throughout the dunite, however. For the most part the deposit consists of many chromite-rich bands in sharp contact with, and separated by, common dunite containing 1 to 2 percent accessory chromite. Electron microprobe and petrographic analysis of accessory chromite shows that it is fine grained (average grain size 0.14 mm), generally lower in Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and has a lower Cr/Fe ratio than segregated chromite. In addition, unusual patchy zoning is exhibited by some accessory chromite. These patchy zones are extremely rich in iron (&gt;60 percent total iron oxide). The negative factors such as the fine-grained nature of the accessory chromite and high iron content compared to segregated chromite, could be overcome by the very large tonnage in the deposit.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83816","usgsCitation":"Lipin, B., Wetzel, N., and Heinrich, S.M., 1983, The Emma Bell deposit, Siskiyou Co., California: A possible low-grade source of chromite: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-816, i, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83816.","productDescription":"i, 16 p.","costCenters":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":391761,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14237.htm"},{"id":152420,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0816/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49326,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0816/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Siskiyou County","otherGeospatial":"Emma Bell deposit","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.176,\n              41.905\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.125,\n              41.905\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.125,\n              41.95\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.176,\n              41.95\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.176,\n              41.905\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c8b5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lipin, B. The data for each station consist of scalar electromagnetic measurements at descrete frequencies for two-orthogonal magnetic and electric field pairs. Observations spaced about 5-km apart indicate resistivities in the range of 100-700 ohm-m for the unweathered Tertiary volcanic rocks to a depth of 200 to 500 m. Beneath this zone the data indicate resistivities in the range of 10-100 ohm-m that suggest the existence of an older volcanic rock unit. The less resistive unit appears to be displaced upward beneath Turtle Mountain, an area bounded to the northeast and southwest by mapped Basin and Range faults, and bounded to the southeast by an unmapped fault of older origin that trends northeast. Lateral changes in the resistivity of the two main geoelectric layers result in lowered resistivity in an area of known hot-springs near the confluence of the Gila and San Francisco Rivers, as well as along a north-south trending zone located on the east flank of Turtle Mountain, about 5-km (3-mi) west-northwest of the hot springs. This second anomaly is at a probable depth of 400-500 m and is interpreted to indicate a buried fault or fracture zone.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83815","usgsCitation":"Klein, D.P., and Baer, M.J., 1983, Geoelectric structure of the Gila-San Francisco Wilderness Area, Graham and Greenlee Counties, Arizona, from audio-magnetotelluric data: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-815, 109 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83815.","productDescription":"109 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":406098,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14236.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":49135,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0815/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":152182,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0815/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Graham County, Greenlee County","otherGeospatial":"Gila-San Francisco Wilderness Area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109.566,\n              33.076\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.32,\n              33.076\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.32,\n              32.833\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.566,\n              32.833\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.566,\n              33.076\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1de4b07f02db6a9b4e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Klein, D. In the study area 23,700 acre-feet of ground water from the basin-fill deposits was used to irrigate more than 5,000 acres in 1981. Surface water is not a reliable source for irrigation or public supply. Ground water enters the area as underflow from the north and east and as recharge from the mountains, moves through basin-margin sediments, around the basin-center clays, and exits the area to the west beneath the Rio Sonoyta. Ground-water withdrawals in the upper Rio Sonoyta area do not appear to have an effect on water levels in the Papago Farms-Great Plain area. Depth to water ranges from 500 feet near the southern boundary to 150 feet in the center of study area. About 10 million acre-feet of recoverable ground water is stored in the upper 400 feet of the aquifer. Storage is being depleted at a rate of 19,000 acre-feet per year. The ground water is a sodium and bicarbonate type and has an anomalously high content of arsenic and fluoride. Pan concentrates collected in and around these plutons were enriched in tin and tungsten relative to the concentrate population. Rock samples of these leucocratic, muscovite-bearing, peraluminous granites contained anomalously high concentrations of lithium, fluorine, beryllium, lead, rubidium, niobium, yttrium, tin, bismuth, silver, and tungsten. \r\n\r\nTen tin-anomalous plutons were located in the study area. The plutons are typically small, less than 10 km2 in areal extent, and circular to elliptical in plan view. The resource potential of these latest Proterozoic plutons has not been established; economically exploitable concentrations of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, or zinc may be present, and followup studies are warranted. Further, two of the plutons are characterized by higher than normal total-count radioactivity and have potential for uranium, thorium, or rare-earth element deposits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83369","usgsCitation":"Du Bray, E., Elliott, J., and Stoeser, D.B., 1983, Geochemical evaluation of felsic plutonic rocks in the eastern and southeastern Arabian Shield, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-369, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83369.","productDescription":"57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36228,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36229,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36230,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36231,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6ae2e5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Du Bray, E. These geologic factors are principally crustal extension and crustal thinning during the last 17 million years. Basalts as young as 10,000 years have been mapped in the area. High-silica volcanic and intrusive rocks of Quaternary age can be used to locate hydrothermal convection systems. Drilling for hot, high-silica, buried rock bodies is most promising in the areas of recent volcanic activity. Southwestern Utah has more geothermal potential than other parts of the Basin and Range province in Utah. The Roosevelt Hot Springs area, the Cove Fort-Sulphurdale area, and the area to the north as far as 60 kilometers from them probably have the best potential for geothermal development for generation of electricity. Other areas with estimated reservoir temperatures greater than 150°C are Thermo, Monroe, Red Hill (in the Monroe-Joseph Known Geothermal Resource Area), Joseph Hot Springs, and the Newcastle area. The rates of heat and water discharge are high at Crater, Meadow, and Hatton Hot Springs, but estimated reservoir temperatures there are less than 150°C. Additional exploration is needed to define the potential in three additional areas in the Escalante Desert.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Pacific Ocean nodules have the highest average manganese, nickel, and copper contents, and Atlantic Ocean nodules have the highest average iron content. The average manganese, nickel, and copper contents generally increase toward the equator in both hemispheres, and iron content generally decreases. The variation of metal content with water depth is not linear; instead, there appears to be a threshold depth of about 2,900 to 3,000 m, above which combined nickel and copper contents are generally less than 1 percent and below which cobalt content is generally less than about 0.6 percent. \r\n\r\nThe composition of the nodules varies widely, but three rarely overlapping types that are of possible economic interest can be recognized. (1) Nodules containing more than about 1 percent combined nickel and copper only exceptionally contain more than 0.5 percent cobalt and 35 percent manganese. (2) Nodules containing more than 0.5 percent cobalt rarely contain more than 1 percent combined nickel and copper and 35 percent manganese. (3) Nodules containing more than 35 percent manganese only exceptionally contain more than 0.5 percent cobalt, although they average nearly 1.1 percent combined nickel and copper. Current economic interest in nodule mining is focused on the Clarion-Clipperton zone in the northeastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, the largest known area in which nodules average 1.8 percent or more combined nickel and copper. Several other areas in which nodules are rich in these metals are found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and may be viewed as targets for exploration. \r\n\r\nNearly 60 chemical elements have been found in manganese nodules, many in concentrations far exceeding their crustal abundances. The amounts in which many minor elements are present vary with the amounts of principal metals present, but the three metal types described above do not include the maximum reported values for several other elements, such as titanium (8.9 percent), vanadium (0.5), zinc (9.0), and lead (0.75). It seems possible, therefore, that there may be other kinds of metal-rich types, some of which may have p6tential economic value. \r\n\r\nMany of the variations in nodule composition are in large part a function of variations in mineral composition, to which many factors contribute. Some of the regional variations can be broadly related to oceanic circulation, basin morphology, and depth, but a better understanding of ocean processes and regional oceanography and geology is needed to explain all the variations observed in the composition of manganese nodules.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir886","usgsCitation":"McKelvey, V.E., Wright, N.A., and Bowen, R.W., 1983, Analysis of the world distribution of metal-rich subsea manganese nodules: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 886, iv, 55 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir886.","productDescription":"iv, 55 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124693,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0886/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30694,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0886/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e778","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKelvey, Vincent Ellis","contributorId":92650,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKelvey","given":"Vincent","email":"","middleInitial":"Ellis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147340,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wright, Nancy A.","contributorId":28586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Nancy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bowen, Roger W.","contributorId":21142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bowen","given":"Roger","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147338,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Samples provide the basis for bedload-discharge rating curves for the Rock and Kaskaskie Rivers and Henderson Creek. Comparison of measured bedload discharge with bedload discharge computed for selected flow conditions from channel characteristics allows the selection of an appropriate indirect method for determining bedload discharge for the Spoon, Kishwaukee, and Edwards Rivers. No one indirect method best represents bedload discharge in studied streams. No bedload-discharge rating curve was developed for the La Moine River, because the two measured bedload discharges are not sufficient for development of a rating curve and do not agree well with discharges computed by any of the three indirect methods. The dominant size of bedload particles in all streams sampled give results which cannot be used at this time. Collection-bag clogging may have been significant in the Green River, and large bed material gains or high flow velocities may have interfered with the operation of the sample in the Vermilion River.
