Pennsylvanian rocks in Wyoming comprise two stratigraphic sequences bounded by regional unconformities. Red mudstone and limestone characterize the strata in the lower sequence, and sandstone and dolomite characterize the strata in the upper sequence. Initial deposits of the lower sequence are-red mudstone probably of no older age than about middle Morrowan, except in the subsurface of southwestern Wyoming where early Morrowan strata may be present. The basal red mudstone lies unconformably upon Mississippian strata except in the vicinity of the ancestral Rocky Mountain Front Range where they lie upon Precambrian rocks. The red beds grade upward to interbedded limestone and mudstone of late Morrowan and early Atokan age; but the limestone strata are absent at many places because of beveling on a Middle Pennsylvanian erosional surface.
Initial deposits of the upper sequence are heterogeneous and locally may be thinly bedded red, green, or varicolored mudstone, sandstone, or dolomite of late Atokan to early Des Moinesian age. Basal strata of the upper sequence lie unconformably upon lower Pennsylvanian strata at most places in Wyoming; but locally, where the lower Pennsylvanian strata are absent by erosion or possibly by nondeposition, the upper sequence lies upon Mississippian rocks. The upper sequence in central and northwestern Wyoming comprises mostly dolomite in the lower part but grades upward into mostly sandstone no younger than Des Moinesian. The upper sequence in eastern Wyoming comprises sandstone and dolomite about equally and also includes Upper Pennsylvanian strata as young as Virgilian. Upper Pennsylvanian strata also occur as part of the upper sequence in the thrust belt in western Wyoming. Pennsylvanian strata terminate upward at an erosional unconformity beneath Permian rocks everywhere in Wyoming.

in Washington","docAbstract":"A method of evaluating the transferability of streamflow information by regional regression analysis was applied in Washington to several streamflow variables. The annual mean and annual standard deviation were chosen to represent the development potential of the water resource, while the mean, standard deviation, and the 50-year recurrence interval of the annual flood series were chosen to represent flood potential. Low-flow characteristics were not used because of the inability to model them by regression analysis. Ephemeral streams in the vicinity of the Columbia Plateau were ignored for the same reason.
The results of the study indicate that the standard errors of estimate of the regression relations were good approximations of the medians of the Bayesian distributions of estimates of inaccuracy and that for the streamflow variables used in the study, little if any improvement can be expected in the regression relations by the collection of additional streamflow data. Improved transferability of streamflow information for these variables has a prerequisite of more accurate information-transfer models.
It is therefore recommended that the future streamflow-data network contain only those streamflow stations needed to provide data for (1) the design or operation of water-resources projects, (2) the investigation and study of water resources, and (3) monitoring long-term trends in streamflow.
A digital model was developed to study the impact on ground-water conditions of the Muskegon County wastewater disposal system. At the disposal site, wastewater is stored in two 850-acre (344-ha) lagoons and then spray-irrigated on crop land. About 70 miles (105 km) of drainage tile, which underlies the irrigated land, has caused the water table to be lowered substantially. The decline in water levels has been partially offset by irrigation and leakage from the lagoons; at some places the water table is higher than it was prior to construction. Predictive simulations by the model were used to study the effects of varying tile drainage, amount of irrigation water applied, lagoon leakage, and natural ground-water recharge. If the effectiveness of the tile to collect drainage is reduced by 75 percent, large areas within the wastewater site would become waterlogged. However, the effect outside of the wastewater site would be negligible.

Commercial fishing and fish processing form the economic base for the community.

A second-order residual gravity map derived from the complete Bouguer gravity map for the survey area (derived from survey data and pre-existing U.S. Department of Defense data) shows an excellent correspondence between gravity lows and sediment-filled basins and suggests considerable variation in basin-fill thickness. Later study extended the known area of radioactivity to a total length of about 30 km. Mineralogic studies indicated that the samples were low in uranium and that the radioactivity was due principally to thorium in niobium-bearing minerals. Two samples were reexamined to identify the sources of radioactivity, but X-ray and alpha plate studies did not reveal the radioactive minerals, even though uranium mineralization was indicated by the alpha plates. Further sampling is suggested to isolate the sources of radioactivity. This study indicates that niobium occurrences are related to alkaline intrusives in many areas of western Saudi Arabia. It operates from an external 12 volt battery and supplies a 500-V pulse to a dipole antenna. The waveform changes shape only slightly for antenna impedances ranging from 20 ohms to thousands of ohms. Shunting a resistive load of 200 ohms with a capacitance of hundreds of pF causes only a very small rounding of the leading corner of the pulse. The pulse-rise time to the full voltage is about 100 nS and fall time to zero is about 150 nS. The 10 to 90-percent rise time is about 60 nS. The total pulse duration is adjustable from about 250 nS to about 1200 nS. Pulse-repetition rates range from 1000 to 10,000 pulses/sec. Maximum battery drain of 3 A occurs at the maximum repetition rate, and is less than 1 A at minimum-repetition rate.

Tables in the report show the depths to water level in 1940 or 1950 (predevelopment year), 1966, 1977, and 1978; water-level changes from 194078 or 1950-78, 1966-78 and 1977-78; and the average annual changes from 1940-78 or 1950-78, and from 1966-78. Also shown are saturated thicknesses of the deposits in 1940 or 1950 and in 1978, as well as the change in feet and percentage.

The district is the leading source of zinc in Colorado and one of the major base-metal mining districts in the State. As valued at the time of production, total output of zinc, silver, copper, lead, and gold through 1972 was about $328 million. About 90 percent of this total was produced after 1930. \r\n\r\nThe productive part of the district is an area of about 3 square miles (7.8 square kilometers) on the northeast side of the deep canyon of the Eagle River between the small towns of Gilman and Red Cliff. The ore deposits are principally replacement deposits in dolomites of Mississippian and Devonian age and in quartzite of Cambrian age. A few productive veins occur in Precambrian rocks. The replacement deposits crop out in the cliffs of the canyon wall and extend northeastward downdip beneath Battle Mountain, which is composed of a thick sequence of Pennsylvanian clastic rocks. The deposits were originally worked through several separate mines along the canyon wall, but since 1918, all deposits in dolomite rocks, except some small ones near Red Cliff, have been worked through the Eagle mine of the New Jersey Zinc Company at Gilman. \r\n\r\nThe Gilman district lies on the eastern flank of the huge anticline of the Sawatch Range, near the steeply plunging north end of the anticline. Sedimentary rocks on the flank of this part of the anticline dip homoclinally northeastward to a synclinal axis about 8 mi (miles) (13 km (kilometers> northeast of Gilman and then rise more steeply to the Gore fault at the edge of the Gore Range. The homocline is broken by only a few faults most of which have displacements of less than 100 ft (feet) (30 m (meters>. In contrast, the underlying Precambrian rocks are broken by numerous faults and shear zones related to the Homestake shear zone, a northeast-trending master shear zone several miles wide. Fractures and shear zones along the northwest side of the master zone extend beneath the Gilman district. \r\n\r\nThe Gilman district is at the northwestern edge of the northeast-trending Colorado mineral belt as defined by mineralized areas and bodies of intrusive porphyries. Neighboring mining districts in the mineral belt to the southeast of Gilman are the Kokomo lead-zinc district, 13 mi (21 km) distant; the Climax molybdenum district, 16 mi (26 km) distant; and the Leadville district, 20 mi (32 km) distant. These districts, as well as others farther away, are characterized by abundant intrusive rocks of Laramide and middle Tertiary ages and by complex faults systems. The Gilman district, in contrast, contains only a single sill of porphyry and has very simple geologic structure. Detailed geologic mapping indicates that galena, sphalerite and pyrite occur sporadically in a zone at least 1,830 m. long and 6-30 m. wide. The sulfides occur in tuff, or in dark chert and dark shale adjacent to tuff in the upper part of the Lisburne Group of Mississippian age. The sulfides, together with the tuff, dark shale, and dark chert host, rocks probably are part of a stratiform, massive sulfide deposit that may have formed from volcanic exhalations. The stratiform occurrence of the sulfides is limited to a single thrust plate which is a part of a widespread tectonic breccia. The deposit may represent a fragment of a much more extensive stratiform deposit that was severely disrupted and dismembered by isoclinal folding, faulting and shearing. Other areas along the northern front of the Brooks Range particularly those associated with iron staining and the assemblage of dark chert, dark shale and tuff of the Lisburne Group should be examined for concentrations of galena and sphalerite. Because of the highly deformed nature of the terrain, further exploration should concentrate either on finding the edges of buried, dismembered fragments of the original stratiform deposit or on geophysical techniques that may locate the dismembered fragments at depth.

The basins ranged in size from 240 to 490 acres (97 to 198 hectares), and the area disturbed by highway construction in each basin ranged from 20 to 48 acres (8 to 19 hectares). Sediment discharge was measured from each basin for 3 years before construction began and for 2 years during construction. In one of the basins affected by the construction, three offstream ponds were constructed to intercept runoff from the construction area before it reached the stream. In another basin, a large onstream pond was constructed to trap runoff from the construction area after it reached the stream. In a third area, seeding, mulching, and rock dams were used to limit erosion. In the fourth area, no sediment controls were used. \r\n\r\nThe effectiveness of the various sediment-control measures were determined by comparing the sediment loads transported from the basins with sediment controls to those without controls. For most storms the offstream ponds trapped about 60 percent of the sediment that reached them. The large onstream pond had a trap efficiency of about 80 percent, however, it remained turbid and kept the stream flow turbid for long periods following storm periods. Samples of runoff water from the construction area were collected above and below rock dams to determine the reduction in sediment as the flow passed through the device. Rock dams in streams had a trap efficiency of about 5 percent.
