S. Geological Survey conducted a seismic refraction investigation of the northern Mississippi Embayment. During the investigation, 34 shots from nine shotpoints were recorded along a series of profiles. The profiles were parallel to and across an inferred Precambrian rift zone which is outlined by a series of magnetic anomalies and covers an area at least 200 km (125 mi) long and 70 km (45 mi) wide. The paper presents an interpretation of the survey results. The tectonic model proposed to explain the origin of the embayment velocity structure includes a late Precambrian mantle plume that intruded the lower crust of the northern embayment, causing uplift (and/or crustal stretching) and subsequent rifting of the axial area. This was followed by erosion, subsidence, and subsequent deposition of sediments in the resulting trough.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"AAPG","doi":"10.1306/AD4608BE-16F7-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Ginzburg, A., Mooney, W.D., Walter, A., Lutter, W.J., and Healy, J.H., 1983, Deep structure of northern Mississippi embayment: AAPG Bulletin, v. 67, no. 11, p. 2031-2046, https://doi.org/10.1306/AD4608BE-16F7-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"2031","endPage":"2046","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":375011,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Northern Mississippi embayment","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.92236328125,\n              37.055177106660814\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.43994140625,\n              37.055177106660814\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.43994140625,\n              44.402391829093915\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.92236328125,\n              44.402391829093915\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.92236328125,\n              37.055177106660814\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"67","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ginzburg, A.","contributorId":78472,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ginzburg","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":789694,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mooney, Walter D. 0000-0002-5310-3631 mooney@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5310-3631","contributorId":3194,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mooney","given":"Walter","email":"mooney@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":789695,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Walter, A.W.","contributorId":75554,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walter","given":"A.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":789696,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lutter, W. Coordinated passive and active microwave measurements were obtained from shipborne, airborne, and satellite instruments together with in situ observations. The obtained spectra of emissivity (frequency range, 5 to 100 gigahertz) should improve identification of ice types and estimates of ice concentration. Mesoscale features along the ice edge were revealed by a 1.215-gigahertz synthetic aperture radar. Ice edge location by the Nimbus 7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer was shown to be accurate to within 10 kilometers.","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the In one core hole, the average sulfur content of a sequence of oil shale 555 m thick, which represents nearly the maximum thickness of oil shale in the basin, is 0.76 weight percent. The vertical distribution of sulfur through the oil shale is cyclic. As many as 25 sulfur cycles have lateral continuity and can be traced between the core holes. Most of the sulfur resides in iron sulfides (pyrite, marcasite, and minor? pyrrhotite), and small amounts are organically bound in kerogen. In general, the concentration of sulfur correlates moderately with shale-oil yield, but the degree of association ranges from quite high in the upper 90 m of the oil -shale sequence to low or none in the leached zone and in illitic oil shale in the lower part of the sequence. Sulfur also correlates moderately with iron in the carbonate oil -shale sequence, but no correlation was found in the illitic samples. Sulfide mineralization is believed to have occurred during early and late stages of diagenesis, and after lithification, during development of the leached zone. Significant amounts of iron found in ankeritic dolomite and in illite probably account for the lack of a strong correlation between sulfur and iron.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":24,"text":"Conference Paper"},"largerWorkTitle":"Oil Shale Symposium Proceedings","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":19,"text":"Conference Paper"},"conferenceTitle":"16th oil shale symposium proceedings ","conferenceDate":"April 13-15, 1983","conferenceLocation":"Golden, Colorado","language":"English","publisher":"Colorado School of Mines","usgsCitation":"Dyni, J.R., 1983, Distribution and origin of sulfur in Colorado oil shale, <i>in</i> Oil Shale Symposium Proceedings, Golden, Colorado, April 13-15, 1983, p. 144-159.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"144","endPage":"159","costCenters":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374676,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Piceance Creek Basin ","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.8690185546875,\n              40.03182061333687\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.60009765625,\n              40.03182061333687\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.60009765625,\n              40.643135583312805\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.8690185546875,\n              40.643135583312805\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.8690185546875,\n              40.03182061333687\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dyni, John R. jdyni@usgs.gov","contributorId":756,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dyni","given":"John","email":"jdyni@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":788922,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Topographic anomalies are particularly significant in relatively undeformed volcanic terrane because young volcanic rocks generally have large natural remanent magnetizations as well as large susceptibilities. These anomalies commonly appear in aeromagnetic surveys as a complex pattern of high-amplitude, short-wavelength magnetic features that tend to obscure anomalies caused by deeper geologic sources. We have facilitated geologic interpretation of an aeromagnetic survey of the Oregon Cascade Range by calculating the magnetic field caused by a three-dimensional (3-D) topographic model. Maps of the calculated field are compared with observed aeromagnetic data both visually and with a numerical technique that produces a contour map of correlation coefficients for the model. These comparisons allow quick recognition of anomalies caused by normally or reversely magnetized topographic features and, more importantly, identification of anomalies caused by geologic features not obviously caused by the topography.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"GeoScienceWorld","doi":"10.1190/1.1441437","usgsCitation":"Blakely, R.J., and Grauch, V.J., 1983, Magnetic models of crystalline terrane; accounting for the effect of topography: Geophysics, v. 48, no. 11, p. 1551-1557, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1441437.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"1551","endPage":"1557","costCenters":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374272,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oergon","otherGeospatial":"Oregon Cascade Range","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.03613281249999,\n              42.147114459220994\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.17919921875001,\n              42.147114459220994\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.17919921875001,\n              43.11702412135048\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.03613281249999,\n              43.11702412135048\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.03613281249999,\n              42.147114459220994\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"48","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blakely, Richard J. 0000-0003-1701-5236 blakely@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1701-5236","contributorId":1540,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blakely","given":"Richard","email":"blakely@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":662,"text":"Western Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":787954,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Grauch, V. A high spectral resolution airborne spectroradiometer system, used over a known forest-covered copper soil anomaly, has revealed previously unknown spectral changes in the near-infrared chlorophyll absorption spectrum. The metal-induced spectral shifts have subsequently been reproduced in the laboratory at Columbia University. Waveform analysis techniques specifically designed for computer analysis of the high spectral resolution aircraft data filter out the very strong background noise introduced by variations in normal, unstressed vegetation canopy and by topographic effects. The wave-form method proves most effective in extracting the subtle spectral indicators of metal-induced stress. The analytic method is a unique frequency domain technique made possible by the high spectral resolution of the 500-channel spectroradiometer system.</p><p>The biogeophysical technique is demonstrated by three mapping surveys of Cotter Basin, Montana, and Spirit Lake, Washington. This airborne mapping technique presents new application opportunities in large areas of the world where heavy forest cover has in the past made geologic and geophysical exploration tedious and expensive. Compilation of available information on the distribution, composition, and ages of these rocks indicates the presence of six major and six minor plutonic belts.</p><p>From west to east, the major belts are: the Fairweather-Baranof belt of early to mid-Tertiary granodiorite; the Muir-Chichagof belt of mid-Cretaceous tonalite and granodiorite; the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt of porphyritic granodiorite, quartz diorite, and diorite of probable Cretaceous age; the Klukwan-Duke belt of concentrically zoned or Alaskan-type ultramafic-mafic plutons of mid-Cretaceous age within the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt; the Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt of tonalite of unknown, but perhaps mid-Cretaceous, age; and the Coast Plutonic Complex belt I of early to mid-Tertiary granodiorite and quartz monzonite.</p><p>The minor belts are distributed as follows: the Glacier Bay belt of Cretaceous and(or) Tertiary granodiorite, tonalite, and quartz diorite lies within the Fair-weather-Baranof belt; layered gabbro complexes of inferred mid-Tertiary age lie within and are probably related to the Fairweather-Baranof belt; the Chilkat-Chichagof belt of Jurassic granodiorite and tonalite lies within the Muir-Chichagof belt; the Sitkoh Bay alkaline, the Kendrick Bay pyroxenite to quartz monzonite, and the Annette and Cape Fox trondhjemite plutons, all interpreted to be of Ordovician(?) age, together form the crude southern southeastern Alaska belt within the Muir-Chichagof belt; the Kuiu-Etolin mid-Tertiary belt of volcanic and plutonic rocks extends from the Muir-Chichagof belt eastward into the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt; and the Behm Canal belt of mid- to late Tertiary granite lies within and next to Coast Plutonic Complex belt II. In addition, scattered mafic-ultramafic bodies occur within the Fairweather-Baranof, Muir-Chichagof, and Coast Plutonic Complex belts I and II. Palinspastic reconstruction of 200 km of right-lateral movement on the Chatham Strait fault does not significantly change the pattern of the major belts but does bring parts of the minor mid-Tertiary and Ordovician(?) belts closer together.</p><p>The major belts are related to the stratigraphic-tectonic terranes of Berg, Jones, and Coney (1978) as follows: the Fairweather-Baranof belt is largely in the Chugach, Wrangell (Wrangellia), and Alexander terranes; the Muir-Chichagof belt is in the Alexander and Wrangell terranes; the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt is in the Gravina and Taku terranes; the Klukwan-Duke belt is in the Gravina, Taku, and Alexander terranes; the Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt is probably between the Taku and Tracy Arm terranes; and the Coast Plutonic Complex belts I and II are in the Tracy Arm and Stikine terranes.</p><p>Significant metallic-mineral deposits are spatially related to certain of these belts, and some deposits may be genetically related. Gold, copper, and molybdenum occurrences may be related to granodiorites of the Fairweather-Baranof belt. Magmatic copper-nickel deposits occur in the layered gabbro within that belt. The Juneau gold belt, which contains gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc occurrences, parallels and lies close to the Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt; iron deposits occur in the Klukwan-Duke belt; and porphyry molybdenum deposits occur in the Behm Canal belt.</p><p>The Muir-Chichagof belt of mid-Cretaceous age and the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt of probable Cretaceous age are currently interpreted as possible magmatic arcs associated with subduction events. In general, the other belts of intrusive rocks are spatially related to structural discontinuities, but genetic relations, if any, are not yet known. The Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt is probably related to a post-Triassic, pre-early Tertiary suture zone that nearly corresponds to the boundary between the Tracy Arm and Taku terranes. The boundary between the Admiralty-Revillagigedo and Muir-Chichagof belts coincides nearly with the Seymour Canal-Clarence Strait lineament and also is probably a major post-Triassic suture.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/MEM159-p171","usgsCitation":"Brew, D.A., and Morrell, R.P., 1983, Intrusive rocks and plutonic belts of southeastern Alaska, U.S.A: GSA Memoirs, v. 159, p. 171-194, https://doi.org/10.1130/MEM159-p171.","productDescription":"24 p.","startPage":"171","endPage":"194","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":373716,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Southeastern Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -135.087890625,\n              59.5343180010956\n            ],\n            [\n              -138.076171875,\n              58.53959476664049\n            ],\n            [\n              -133.2421875,\n              54.16243396806779\n            ],\n            [\n              -129.814453125,\n              55.27911529201561\n            ],\n            [\n              -135.087890625,\n              59.5343180010956\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"159","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1983-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brew, David A. dbrew@usgs.gov","contributorId":3244,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brew","given":"David","email":"dbrew@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":786244,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Morrell, Robert P.","contributorId":19157,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morrell","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":786245,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Both lakes are sparsely vegetated and&nbsp;</span><i>I. bolanderi</i><span>&nbsp;maintained aboveground oven dry weight of 30–50 m</span><sup>−22</sup><span>&nbsp;through most of the 1981 summer growing season. Plants at the higher elevation Ellery Lake were half as large as plants at Siesta Lake and had substantially more biomass in corms. Titratable acidity levels in&nbsp;</span><i>Isoetes</i><span>&nbsp;leaves showed a diurnal fluctuation &lt;50 μeq g</span><sup>1</sup><span>&nbsp;fresh weight early in the season at the highest elevation site but this increased to ∼300 μeq g</span><sup>1</sup><span>&nbsp;FW by mid-summer; starch and chlorophyll levels likewise increased in the leaves over this time. Throughout the season the magnitude of the diurnal acid change was comparable in</span><i>Isoetes</i><span>&nbsp;from both lakes but the dynamics of daytime deacidification were not. Averaged over the season, total daytime deacidification at Ellery Lake was 65% complete by noon whereas at Siesta Lake it was only 22% complete by noon. It is suggested that this may be related to the fact that Siesta Lake was more acidic and thus more carbon was in the form of free CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>. In both lakes water chemistry showed no consistent diurnal fluctuation in pH or free CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;though total inorganic carbon levels were at the extreme low end for aquatic habitats. The studies reported here suggest that under extremely low inorganic carbon levels there may be selection for nighttime CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;assimilation. Consistent with this hypothesis is the observation that emergent&nbsp;</span><i>I. bolanderi</i><span>&nbsp;plants, resulting from fluctuating water levels, initiated leaves with stomata (unlike Six zones and 7 subzones are proposed, and correlation with high-latitude diatoms zonations for the North Pacific, the Norwegian Sea, and the Southern Ocean is suggested by the discovery of selected diatoms in these tropical sediments which were previously thought to be restricted to high latitudes. Quantitative&nbsp;</span><sup>14</sup><span>C uptake studies indicate that CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;assimilation in both the light and dark are functions of pH and total inorganic carbon level. In both the light and dark, maximum uptake rates in 0.6 mM NaHCO</span><sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;were double the rates in 0.3 mM NaHCO</span><sub>3</sub><span>. At both carbon levels there was a large drop in carbon assimilation rate between pH 6 and 8. In nature water pH and inorganic carbon level fluctuated diurnally thus complicating the determination of the contribution of light vs dark CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;uptake to the total carbon gain. On a sunny day between 0600 and 1200 h water chemistry changed markedly with ∼40% reduction in total carbon, ∼2 pH unit rise resulting from ∼100% depletion of free CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>. Under such conditions daytime deacidification in&nbsp;</span><i>Isoetes</i><span>&nbsp;leaves was 88% complete by noon. In contrast, on an overcast day, reduction of carbon in the water was much slower, deacidification was only 46% complete by noon and substantial malic acid levels remained in the leaves at the end of the day. Upon emergence crassulacean acid metabolism was largely lost in&nbsp;</span><i>Isoetes</i><span>&nbsp;leaves. Preliminary estimates suggest that under natural submerged conditions, early morning photosynthetic rates may be substantially higher than dark CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;uptake rates, though uptake rates throughout much of the day could be substantially lower than nightime CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;assimilation.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Springer Nature","doi":"10.1007/BF00384542","usgsCitation":"Keeley, J., 1983, Crassulacean acid metabolism in the seasonally submerged aquatic Isoetes howellii: Oecologia, v. 58, no. 1, p. 57-62, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00384542.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"57","endPage":"62","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130134,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"58","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683579","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keeley, Jon E. 0000-0002-4564-6521","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4564-6521","contributorId":69082,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keeley","given":"Jon E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315784,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Biostratigraphic ranges of taxa and abundance distributions of dominant species are presented and illustrate striking similarities in faunal assemblages of low latitude regions in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. A high resolution biochronology, based on dominant faunal characteristics and 55 datum events, permits correlation between all three oceans with a high degree of precision. Population studies provide a view of the global impact of the paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes occurring during Middle Eocene to Oligocene time.</span></p><p><span>Planktic foraminiferal assemblage changes indicate a general cooling trend between Middle Eocene to Oligocene time, consistent with previously published oxygen isotope data. Major faunal changes, indicating cooling episodes, occur, however, at discrete intervals: in the Middle Eocene 44-43 Ma (P13), the Middle/Late Eocene boundary 41-40 Ma (P14/P15), the Late Eocene 39-38 Ma (P15/P16), the Eocene/Oligocene boundary 37-36 Ma (P18), and the Late Oligocene 31-29 Ma (P20/P21). With the exception of the E/0 boundary, faunal changes occur abruptly during short stratigraphic intervals, and are characterized by major species extinctions and first appearances. The Eocene/Oligocene boundary cooling is marked primarily by increasing abundances of cool water species. This suggests that the E/0 boundary cooling, which marks a major event in the oxygen isotope record affected planktic faunas less than during other cooling episodes. Planktic foraminiferal faunas indicate that the E/0 boundary event is part of a continued cooling trend which began during the Middle Eocene.</span></p><p>Two hiatus intervals are recognized in low and high latitude sections at the Middle/Late Eocene boundary and in the Late Eocene (P15/P16). This procedure produced independent vectors of survival- and harvest-rate estimates, which were used to test the general hypothesis that mallard survival and harvest rates were inversely related. We used Spearman rank correlation analysis and z-test contrasts between survival rates from years of high vs. low harvest rates. We also conducted computer simulation experiments to gain insight into the ability of these analyses to detect the relationship of interest. The data analyses suggested that survival and harvest rates of young females were inversely related, at least for the 5 areas included in the analysis.
