Stream quality in the San Lorenzo River basin, Calif., was studied from November 1973 through June 1975 to determine areal and temporal variations in water quality, problem areas and times of water quality degradation, and compliance with State and local water-quality objectives. Sampling from November 1973 through July 1974 was done at five stations in the Zayante Creek drainage basin and at one station on the San Lorenzo River at Big Trees. Sampling from August 1974 through June 1975 was done at 15 stations in the San Lorenzo River basin, including one station in the Zayante Creek subbasin. Properties and constituents measured were water temperature, specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, fecal-coliform and fecal-streptococcal bacteria, major dissolved ions, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, and trace elements. Benthic invertebrates were collected during autumn 1974 and spring 1975 at two stations.
Results show that the water in most streams in the basin can be classified as calcium bicarbonate, but based on the dissolved-ion concentrations the basin can be divided into three water-quality areas that correspond generally to three geologic areas. The most pronounced change in water quality occurs during storms when streamflow, turbidity, and total Kjeldahl-nitrogen, total-phosphorus, dissolved-potassium, and fecal-coliform concentrations increase, while concentrations of most dissolved ions decrease owing to dilution of the nonstorm part of the flow. Late winter and early spring nonstorm flows yield water of the best quality because the concentrations of most dissolved ions and fecal-coliform and fecal-streptococcal bacteria are relatively low, whereas turbidity values are the same as, or not appreciably greater than, during the summer low-flow period.
Dissolved-ion concentrations exceeded objectives at stations on east-side streams north of the Zayante fault, probably because of lower-than-normal streamflows during water year 1975. Total-nitrogen and fecal-coliform concentrations exceeded objectives in the Zayante Creek and Branciforte Creek drainage basins, probably because of domestic sewage from improperly operating septic-tank systems. The high total-nitrogen and fecal-coliform concentrations in the Zayante Creek basin might also result from the primary-treated effluent discharged by the city of Scotts Valley into an old sand pit.
Results of diel studies (intensive sampling for a 24-hour period) made at two stations on the San Lorenzo River indicate that residential areas between the stations do not contribute sufficient quantities of oxygen-demanding wastes to the river during low streamflow to cause appreciable dissolved-oxygen depletion. Greater streamflows and residential development seem to be responsible for unstable streambed substrates and reduced diversity of benthic invertebrates during the spring at a station downstream of most of the residential areas in the San Lorenzo River valley.

The Casius quadrangle (30˚ N to 65˚ N lat; 240˚ W to 300˚ W long) is one of the northern tier of Lambert conformal sheets of the Mars Atlas. It consists of four distinctive physiographic regions: 1) part of the northern cratered plains which forms an incomplete annulus around the north polar region, 2) smooth lowland plains of Utopia Planitia across the central and southeastern part of the map, 3) mountainous terrain, in the Nilosyrtis Mensae region south of the lowland plains, consisting of distinct mountains with hummocky surfaces, and 4) cratered plateau in the southwest part of the map, forming the northern part of the large complex cratered region in the mid-latitudes of Mars. In the Casius quadrangle, the cratered plateau is broken by a set of linear to curved parallel-sided canyons on its northern margin.

A low topographic divide in the northern third of the valley separates it into the No Name Creek basin on the south and Omak Creek basin on the north. Omak Creek is the larger stream and enters the valley through a narrow gorge in the eastern granite wall. Partly filled with unconsolidated sand, gravel, and silt to depths as great as 163 feet, the valley contains a ground-water reservoir which supplies four irrigation wells and several domestic-supply wells. The ground-water reservoir also feeds springs which give rise to No Name Creek, and it contributes some water to Omak Creek to the north. Under conditions of the pre-1976 development the ground-water divide was naturally about 3,000 feet north of Omak Creek gorge, and about 580 acre-feet of leakage from Omak Creek recharges the No Name Creek ground-water reservoir. By 1977, ground-water withdrawal of 994 acre-feet per year in No Name Creek basin had caused the ground-water divide to shift to a position about 4,000 feet north of the topographic divide. This increased the drainage area contributing to the No Name Creek ground-water reservoir for about three months so that during a year of normal flow a total of about 600 acre-feet of leakage from Omak Creek can be captured. It is postulated that as much as 1,100 acre-feet per year can be pumped in the central part of the reservoir. This pumpage would cause the ground-water divide to shift farther north, resulting in the capture of additional recharge from Omak Creek; the total leakage would be about 700 acre-feet per year. The solution to these problems depends in part on adequate knowledge of the hydrology of this 8,930 square mile coastal area. Average annual precipitation on the area is about 50 inches. Of this amount, about 34 inches returns to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration, about 15 inches leaves the area as runoff, and about one inch leaves through ground-water outflow. No large stream originates within the area, but major streams entering from the north and west bring in three times as much streamflow as originates within the study area. The flat, low-lying terrane does not offer opportunities for extensive development of surface-water supplies through the use of reservoirs. Much of the surface water is contaminated by saltwater from the ocean. Jurassic rocks, western interior United States - A preliminary survey","docAbstract":"The Triassic and Jurassic rocks in Western Interior United States contain nine unconformities each of which was destroyed to some extent by a younger unconformity. Regardless of extent, all are useful for correlation of rock sequences in areas where fossils or age dates are lacking. The purpose of this report is to call attention to the presence, significance, and value for correlation of these unconformities. The Triassic unconformities are designated from oldest to youngest, Tr-1, Tr-2, and Tr-3; the Jurassic ones similarly are designated J-0, J-l, J-2, J-3, J-4, and J-5. Of these, the J-2 surface is the best preserved and most widespread. It extends throughout the Western Interior and truncates the older unconformities in different parts of this area. Consequently, the J-2 surface is discussed and illustrated in much more detail than the others.
Identification of these unconformities throughout large areas where their presence hitherto had been unknown results in some new unexpected correlations and conclusions. Principal among these are: (1) The Red Draw Member of the Jelm Formation of southeastern Wyoming equals the lower part of the Crow Mountain Sandstone of central Wyoming. The Sips Creek Member of the Jelm Formation of southeastern Wyoming equals the upper part of the Crow Mountain Sandstone of central Wyoming and the Gartra Member of the Chinle Formation in the Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado. The Chinle Formation of the Colorado Plateau and the Uinta Mountains equals the upper part of the Crow Mountain plus the Popo Agie Formation of central Wyoming. (2) The Nugget Sandstone of northern Utah and southwestern Wyoming approximately equals the Glen Canyon Group of the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Cap Sandstone of southwestern Utah equals the Gypsum Spring Formation and the Gypsum Spring Member of the Twin Creek Limestone of Wyoming and the Nesson Formation of Nordquist in the subsurface of the Williston basin. The Sawtooth and Piper Formations at their type sections in Montana and the lower parts of the Twin Creek Limestone (including only the Sliderock, Rich, and Boundary Ridge Members) in western Wyoming and of the Carmel Formation in the Colorado Plateau, at their respective type localities, are equivalent, but none of these correlate with any part of the Gypsum Spring Formation of Wyoming. The Curtis Formation at its type locality in the San Rafael Swell, Utah, equals only the lower part of the Curtis Formation of the Uinta Mountains. The upper part of the Curtis in the Uinta Mountains and the Redwater Shale Member of the Sundance Formation of Wyoming and South Dakota are equivalent.
Estimates of the length of time in millions of years (m.y.) required for uplift and erosion of an unconformity range from less than 1 to as much as 10 m.y.; the average is about 1.8 m.y. if the extremes in time are excluded. The length of time for burial of the surfaces by transgression ranges from less than 1 to about 10 m.y.; the average is less than 1 m.y. if the extremes in time are disregarded.
