The selected wells best illustrate the effects of changes in recharge and discharge in the various ground-water reservoirs in the State. More than 20 million acre-feet of freshwater is estimated to be in storage in the basin fill of westernmost Texas. About 12 million acre-feet, or more than half, is in El Paso County in the Hueco bolson and Mesilla Valley. In addition, the basins contain about 7 million acre-feet of slightly saline water in basin fill, in Rio Grande alluvium in the Hueco bolson and lower Mesilla Valley, and in the Capitan Limestone in the northern Salt Basin. Ground-water pumping for municipal supply and industrial use in the El Paso area caused water-level declines of as much as 74 feet during 1903-73, and pumping for irrigation in the Salt Basin caused a maximum decline of 150 feet at Lobo Flat during 1949-73. Additional development of ground water in westernmost Texas will be accompanied by further declines in water levels, and will probably induce local migration of slightly saline or poorer quality water into freshwater areas. Land-surface subsidence could occur in local areas where water-level declines are large and the basin fill contains large amounts of compressible clay. It is located within the Carlsbad Mining District about 25 miles east of Carlsbad. The WIPP area is immediately south of the Capitan Limestone subcrop, which formed the northern margin of the Delaware basin in Permian time. During Late Permian (Ochoan) time, gypsum, anhydrite, and halite were deposited in the seas of the Delaware basin to form the Castile Formation. These deposits have a maximum thickness of about 2,000 feet and grade upward into the more argillaceous beds of the Salado Formation. The Salado Formation contains abundant sulfate minerals, notably anhydrite and polyhalite. All of these areas affect the water quality of the lakes through storm runoff and transport of windborne material. During a study from April 1971 to June 1974, stages of Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity declined 1.5, 1.4, and 3.0 ft, respectively, because the rainfall was 3.78 in. below average for the area. Inflow to the lakes during this 3-year period was approximately 1,966 acre-ft of which 84 percent was by rainfall and 16 percent was by storm runoff. Rainfall and runoff brought in 82 tons of dissolved solids of which storm runoff carried 51 tons and bulk precipitation carried 32 tons. Dissolved solids concentrations in the lakes were relatively low, averaging 91, 132, and 212 mg/liter for Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity, respecetively. Major ions, trace elements and nutrients were present in the lakes in relatively low concentrations. Phytoplankton and coliform population showed sharp seasonal fluctuations with the maximum population generally occurring during the warmer months. Blue-green algae predominated in all three lakes. The dominant Precambrian granitic rock type is the biotitic phase of the granite of Lankin Dome. This rock type is characterized by high potassium and anomalously high thorium concentrations, and is the most favorable granitic source for the uranium deposits in the surrounding area. Areal distribution patterns for radioelement concentrations show that the most favorable source regions are located closest to known uranium deposits.</p><p>Most of the granitic rocks in the Granite Mountains region are characterized by high thorium-uranium ratios. These high ratios are interpreted to be the result of uranium loss. Non-gaussian distribution of radioelement contents and poor correlation between radioelement pairs are interpreted to be the result of some redistribution of radioelements during the last phase of granite crystallization and to recent uranium loss. A good correlation between thorium and iron is attributed to the mobilization of thorium into microcrystalline iron oxides during a late portion of the magmatic history.</p><p>A comparison of sulfur data for surface and shallow drill-hole samples suggests that sulfur has been removed from the granite to at least a depth of 20 m.
