Dietary concentrations of DDT dissolved in vegetable oils were usually more toxic than diets containing comparable amounts of powdered DDT. Younger shrews, particularly females, were more tolerant of powdered DDT than older animals; yet, there were no conspicuous age differences in toxicity of DDT dissolved in oils. In comparison to other mammals, short-tailed shrews are not unusually sensitive to DDT, dieldrin, or endrin on the basis of two-week feeding tests.</p><p>The influence of age and sex on toxicity of DDT, endrin, and dieldrin was sometimes more important than body weight. Of those shrews of the same age and sex that were fed the same dietary dosage, heavier shrews were more tolerant than lighter individuals; and, heavier shrews tended to lose a greater percentage of body weight before death.</p><p>There was a range of 15 to 105 DDT equivalents in brains of shrews dying on dietary dosages of DDT. Six shrews fed a high level of DDT seemed to have unusual metabolite capabilities and died with apparent lethal levels of DDD in their brains. Levels of dieldrin in brains of shrews that died on a dietary dosage of dieldrin ranged from 3.7 to 12.6 ppm.</p><p>In the rates of gain and loss experiments where shrews were given diets containing 400 ppm DDT or 50 ppm dieldrin up to 17 days, high residues were noted in tissues of shrews after two weeks on a contaminated diet and a few died at that time. After shrews were placed on clean food, it was determined that &gt;50% of the dieldrin residues in carcass and brain were lost in &lt;2 weeks. Males and females fed DDT for 17 days lost &gt;50% of residues of DDT and metabolites in brains after 2 weeks on clean food; males lost nearly 50% of residues in carcasses after two weeks on clean food compared with a loss of only 11% in females.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF02332040","usgsCitation":"Blus, L.J., 1978, Short-tailed shrews: Toxicity and residue relationships of DDT, dieldrin, and endrin: Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, v. 7, no. 1, p. 83-98, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF02332040.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"83","endPage":"98","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":199428,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"7","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49bee4b07f02db5d1336","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blus, Lawrence J.","contributorId":35199,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blus","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Epigenetic iron disulfide minerals formed in two distinct stages. The first stage involved sulfidization of the host rock by sulfide (H&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;S, HS-)-bearing solutions that emanated from a fault about 1.5 km downdip from and subparallel to the orebody. Pyrite was the dominant iron disulfide mineral formed from this fault sulfide. The isotopic composition (delta&nbsp;</span><sup>34</sup><span>&nbsp;S) of first-stage iron disulfide is quite heavy (&gt;0 per mil), in part because the fault-derived H&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;S was isotopically heavy. The development of the second-stage sulfides was related to processes that formed the uranium roll. Iron disulfide minerals produced during this second stage commonly occur as rims around the first-stage sulfides. The rims are exclusively marcasite in and adjacent to ore, but the pyrite content in these rims increases with increasing distance from ore. The sulfur of the second-stage sulfides in the vicinity of the roll front is isotopically light (--25 to --40 per mil). The virtual absence of organic carbon in the host sand precludes a bacterial origin for the ore-stage iron disulfide minerals and, therefore, eliminates bacterial metabolism as the mechanism for isotopic fractionation. Instead, the sulfur source for ore-stage sulfides was preore (first stage) sulfides, remobilized via partial oxidation to soluble metastable sulfur oxyanions.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.73.8.1690","usgsCitation":"Goldhaber, M.B., Reynolds, R.L., and Rye, R.O., 1978, Reproductive impairment in irradiated males is demonstrated during the breeding season by reduced testes weights and by seminiferous tubules devoid of germ cells. Ultrastructural morphology of Leydig cells, plasma testosterone levels, and developed accessory sex structures indicate normal steroidogenesis in such males; cytology of the pituitary gonadotropes and pituitary gonadotropin content indicate normal gonadotropin levels. These findings suggest that low levels of radiation affect the spermatogenic process directly, rather than through damage to the pituitary. Comparable irradiation causes complete resorption of ovarian tissue in some female&nbsp;</span><i>Uta</i><span>. The oviducts are atrophic and the pituitary gonadotropes hyperactive. Resemblance of gonadotropes to those of castrated animals and reduced pituitary hormone content suggest elevated levels of gonadotropin production, probably due to the absence of ovarian steroid feedback in affected animals. The continued mitotic activity of oogonia in adult reptiles and their limited number contribute to the vulnerability of germinal tissue in irradiated female lizards. Destruction of the germ cells is accompanied by resorption of all ovarian tissue including steroidogenic elements. Shasta volcano. The stratigraphy of the deposits is exposed in readouts along a northwest-southeast line between the cities of Weed and Mount Shasta and includes, from bottom to top, pre-Shastina diamictons, a Shastina pyroclasticflow assemblage, and a Black Butte pyroclastic-flow assemblage. Pyroclastic flows from Shastina, a volcanic cone on the west flank of Mt. Shasta, form a fan of nonvesicular rock debris that overlies part of the Shastina cone and pre-Shastina deposits; the fan deposits thicken northward and underlie the town of Weed. Pyroclastic-flow deposits of both vesicular and nonvesicular rock debris caused by eruptions at the site of Black Butte, a large volcanic dome at the foot of Mt. Shasta, thicken southward and underlie part of the city of Mount Shasta. Soil-profile oxidation is 75-80 cm thick on deposits from both Shastina and Black Butte. As much as 10 m of vertical displacement occurred along east-trending faults 3.5 km northwest of Black Butte after deposition of the youngest two pyroclastic flows from that source. Evidence that faulting and volcanism were nearly simultaneous suggests that the area northwest of Black Butte subsided during a late eruptive phase of the plug dome. The molluscan assemblages are from the upper 600 of the 1800-m-thick marine and nonmarine formation, which appears to be entirely of late Miocene age. The Skonun Formation is the strandline fa.cies of marginal marine and nonmarine deposits of the northwestern part of the Queen Charlotte basin, a Nieogene embayment paralleling the modern mainland coast. The molluscan fauna and associated lignite beds are known from a few widely scattered outcrops; they are indicative of alternating marine and nonmarine to brackish-water environments in the upper part of the formation. The Skonun fauna occurs near the northern boundary of the Pacific Northwest Neogene molluscan province. It is the only marine Neogene molluscan fauna known from the British Columbia coast. An unusual occurrence of axinite as a possible primary constituent of a plutonic rock is in the Russian Mission quadrangle, Alaska. The four analyzed axinites from these widely different localities and from different host rocks are surprisingly similar in chemistry and optics. In detail, both the gravity and the magnetic anomalies are a complex of highs and lows, in contrast to the simpler anomalies over the western Snake River Plain. The broad gravity high associated with the eastern Snake River Plain cannot be produced by a dense mass at shallow depth under the plain, but must be produced either by a deep feature under the plain or by a broader, shallower feature extending well beyond the plain. The high could be produced by a thinning of the crust under the plain by 4.5 to 7 kilometers. The data suggest that the Cenozoic rocks of the plain are underlain by rocks that have density and magnetization similar to the density and magnetization of the pre-Cenozoic rocks north and south of the plain. The data do not suggest rifting of the upper crust such as is inferred for the western Snake River Plain. The plain is in approximate isostatic equilibrium with adjoining regions to the north and south and thus contrasts with the adjoining areas where the basin-and-range topography is not in isostatic equilibrium. The local gravity anomalies on the plain are probably produced by variations in the thickness of Cenozoic rocks, but the wavelength of the anomalies is about twice that of the basin-and-range structural features in areas adjoining the plain. The gravity expression of basin-and-range structural features does not extend far onto the plain. Magnetic anomalies on the plain are produced by Cenozoic volcanic rocks.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Arlington, VA","usgsCitation":"Mabey, D.R., 1978, Regional gravity and magnetic anomalies in the eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 5, p. 553-562.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"553","endPage":"562","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":306987,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":306986,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue5/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"31.11 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Snake River Plain","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {\n        \"stroke\": \"#555555\",\n        \"stroke-width\": 2,\n        \"stroke-opacity\": 1,\n        \"fill\": \"#555555\",\n        \"fill-opacity\": 0.5\n      },\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.246826171875,\n              42.032974332441405\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.994384765625,\n              42.2366518803206\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7529296875,\n              43.26120612479979\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.39038085937499,\n              43.77902662160831\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.368408203125,\n              44.04811573082351\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.961669921875,\n              44.23732831822538\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.39013671875,\n              44.26093725039923\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.04931640625,\n              43.96909818325174\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.917236328125,\n              43.35713822211053\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.774169921875,\n              43.31718491566708\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.6640625,\n              43.26920624914964\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.03759765625,\n              43.54058479482877\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.444091796875,\n              43.810747313446996\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.619873046875,\n              43.929549935614595\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.91650390625,\n              43.95328204198018\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.98242187499999,\n              43.16512263158296\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.71874999999999,\n              42.64204079304428\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.09252929687499,\n              42.13082130188811\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.41162109375,\n              42.00848901572399\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.246826171875,\n              42.032974332441405\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55d6fa37e4b0518e3546bc57","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mabey, Don R.","contributorId":43741,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mabey","given":"Don","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":568814,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The principal ore minerals are argentiferous galena and sphalerite; siderite is the principal gangue. The &delta;<sup>34</sup>S values of the sulfide minerals range from +2.2 to +15.0 permil, indicating that the sulfur had a shallow crustal source. &Delta;<sup>34</sup>S values between sphalerite and galena range from +2.3 to +3.4 permil, corresponding to sulfur isotope temperatures between 280&deg; and 182 &deg;C. Hydrothermal barite has a&nbsp;&delta;<sup>34</sup>S of +13.2 permil. Lead isotope ratios are radiogenic, also pointing to a shallow crustal source. Quartz gangue has &delta;<sup>18</sup>O of +16.4 permil and a calculated &delta;<sup>18</sup>O<sub>H20</sub> at 270&deg;C of +8.4 permil. This value is reasonable for a hydrothermal fluid that had reached equilibrium with the argillite country rock. The siderite gangue has&nbsp;&delta;<sup>18</sup>O and&nbsp;&delta;<sup>13</sup>C values of +14.0 and -5.5 permil, respectively. Fluid inclusions have homogenization temperatures of 244&deg;-307&deg;C and average 270&deg;C. Freezing-stage measurements ranged from -1.85 to -2.8&deg;C, suggesting salinities of 3.2 to 4.8 weight percent. The &delta;D values of inclusion fluid in ore and gangue minerals are -110 to -120 permil. The geology, isotope, and fluid-inclusion data are consistent with a model of hydrothermal systems of meteoric water in faulted and shattered Paleozoic rocks near plutonic masses. This environment permitted deep circulation of the hydrothermal fluids, which dissolved the metals and sulfur from the Paleozoic host rocks and deposited ore in favorable beds or structures under the regional Wood River thrust fault.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Arlington, VA","usgsCitation":"Hall, W.E., Rye, R.O., and Doe, B.R., 1978, Wood River mining district, Idaho - intrusion-related lead-silver deposits derived from country rock source: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 5, p. 579-592.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"579","endPage":"592","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":306999,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":306998,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue5/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"31.11 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","county":"Blaine County","city":"Hailey, Bellevue","otherGeospatial":"Wood River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.52629089355469,\n              43.3616313239934\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.52629089355469,\n              43.76514352427404\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.04907226562499,\n              43.76514352427404\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.04907226562499,\n              43.3616313239934\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.52629089355469,\n              43.3616313239934\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55d6fa38e4b0518e3546bc5f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hall, Wayne E.","contributorId":89955,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hall","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":568845,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rye, Robert O. rrye@usgs.gov","contributorId":1486,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rye","given":"Robert","email":"rrye@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":568846,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Doe, Bruce R.","contributorId":87554,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doe","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":568847,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The basal fault scarp is rejuvenated by vertical movements recurring at intervals on the order of 10 000 years. Fault scarps in colluvium that lie within a few tens of meters of the base of faceted spurs remain clearly recognizable for only a few tens of thousand years. Initial fault-scarp slopes of 50&deg; to 90&deg; are replaced by debris-controlled slopes of 30&deg; to 37&deg; within a few thousand years. In fractured bedrock, slope angles in the range of 25&deg; to 35&deg; remain relatively stable for hundreds of thousands of years and account for the relative stability of facets on spurs. Piedmont slopes are greatly affected by tectonic tilting or warping toward or away from the range front. The formation of pediments is believed to result from a low ratio of uplift relative to downcutting. A few million years is required for the development of a pediment a few kilometers wide.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Arlington, AV","usgsCitation":"Wallace, R.E., 1978, Geometry and rates of change of fault-generated range fronts, north-central Nevada: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 5, p. 637-649.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"637","endPage":"649","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":307042,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue5/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"31.11 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":307043,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.3,\n             40\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.3,\n              41\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              41\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.3,\n              40\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55d6fa32e4b0518e3546bc40","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wallace, Robert E.","contributorId":15570,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wallace","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":568981,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Simultaneous consideration of mineral composition, grain size, and sorting of the sandstones by using stepwise multiple discriminant-function analysis has permitted differentiation between alluvial-plain and delta-plain sandstones. Stepwise multiple discriminant-function analysis of the sandstone samples- was performed in two parts. The first analysis assigned the sandstones of all grain-size classes to one of three environments of deposition: (1) alluvial plain, (2) upper delta plain, and (3) lower delta plain. The second analysis classed the sandstones by grain size and subdivided each grain-size class into these environmental groups. Discriminant analyses of sandstones of all grain-size classes led to correct assignment of depositional environment to 76 percent of the samples. Analyses of the sandstones classed by grain size led to correct classification of 67 percent of the medium-grained sandstones, 83 percent of the fine-grained sandstones, and 91 percent of the very fine grained sandstones. The discriminantfunction method was adopted to classify the depositional environment and stratigraphic position of test sandstone samples. Analyses of fine-grained and very fine grained sandstones resulted in correct classification of 84 percent of the test samples to their depositional setting and stratigraphic position. The best discrimination is offered by analyses of fine-grained sandstones, which resulted in correct classification of 88 percent of the samples. Thus, this statistical method can be adopted as a powerful tool for exploration programs that concern delineation of genetically similar sandstones.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Arlington, VA","usgsCitation":"Flores, R.M., 1978, Petrographic differentiation of depositional environments of sandstones of the Pennsylvanian Breathitt Formation, northeastern Kentucky and southwestern West Virginia: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 5, p. 593-602.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"593","endPage":"602","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":307005,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":307004,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue5/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"31.11 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kentucky, Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Breathitt Formation","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.86849975585938,\n              37.85696502054439\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.86849975585938,\n              38.16533520012289\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.47093200683594,\n              38.16533520012289\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.47093200683594,\n              37.85696502054439\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.86849975585938,\n              37.85696502054439\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55d6fa37e4b0518e3546bc54","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Flores, Romeo M. rflores@usgs.gov","contributorId":71984,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flores","given":"Romeo","email":"rflores@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":165,"text":"Central Energy Resources Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":568886,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The southern part of the city is traversed by the San Jacinto fault. Adjacent to the upgradient (northeast) side of the fault is a 10 square mile (26 square kilometers) area which contains a zone in the alluvial ground‐water basin that formerly was under artesian pressure and consisted of swampy lands with a history of flowing wells, springs, and ground‐water discharge to Warm Creek.</p><p>Since about 1945, water levels have declined more than 100 feet (30 meters), and the swampy lands have dried up and are now highly urbanized. Basin replenishment by artificial recharge of imported northern California water at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains may cause ground‐water levels to rise again in the area that was formerly swampy land. If this should happen, building foundations and basements could be subjected to structural damage and flooding by renewed flowing of unplugged artesian wells.</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, is developing a two‐layer digital model to aid in predicting the rate and extent of the rise in water levels. The solution to the mathematical equations used in the model was approximated numerically by the Galerkin finite‐element method. The water district desires to evaluate water management alternatives, such as varying location, distribution, amounts of recharge, and pumping centers, to avoid excessive water level rises that could indicate an overfilling of the basin and could cause damage.</p>","language":"English","doi":"10.1111/j.1745-6584.1978.tb03257.x","usgsCitation":"Hardt, W.F., and Hutchinson, C.B., 1978, Model aids planners in predicting rising ground-water levels in San Bernardino, California: Groundwater, v. 16, no. 6, p. 424-431, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1745-6584.1978.tb03257.x.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"424","endPage":"431","costCenters":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":357576,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"San Berndardino","volume":"16","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2006-07-06","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hardt, William F.","contributorId":70013,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hardt","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":745839,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hutchinson, C. Even so, the actual establishment of the statistical classes, or \"signatures,\" is one of the relatively more costly operations involved. Analysts have, therefore, been seeking cost-saving signature extension techniques that would accept training data acquired at one time or place and apply them to another. Signatures may be extended in preprocessing steps or in the classification steps that follow. In the present example, land cover classes were derived by the simplest and most direct form of signature extension: Classes statistically derived from a Landsat scene of the Puget Sound area, Wash., were applied to the adjacent Landsat scene of the Portland area, Oreg., acquired during the next 25 seconds down orbit. A statistical relationship of forests and hydrological variables with forest succession constraints predicted forest acreage totals for 16 forest categories within 70% or better of actual values in two-thirds of the cases. Using time-lapsed photography covering 42 years, 23 categories were described. The succession trend of vegetation since 1930, by sedimentation, had been toward mixed hardwoods, except for isolated areas. Satellite MSS Band 7 imagery was used to map the current vegetation into three main categories and for assessment of acreage. Additionally, a geological anomaly was recognized on satellite imagery indication an effect on drainage and sedimentation.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pecora IV Proceedings of the Symposium","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"National Wildlife Federation","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"O’Neil, C.P., deSteiguer, J.E., and North, G.W., 1978, Trend analysis of vegetation in Louisiana's Atchafalaya river basin: Pecora IV Proceedings of the Symposium, p. 114-136.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"114","endPage":"136","numberOfPages":"23","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288941,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Louisiana","otherGeospatial":"Atchafalaya River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -91.8258,29.475 ], [ -91.8258,31.0271 ], [ -91.1728,31.0271 ], [ -91.1728,29.475 ], [ -91.8258,29.475 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae787ae4b0abf75cf2d6e2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"O’Neil, Calvin P.","contributorId":58943,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O’Neil","given":"Calvin","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495098,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"deSteiguer, J.
