The furrows are 10 to 50 m apart, 4 to 13 m deep, linear, and nearly parallel in water depths of 2,000 m. They have steep walls and flat floors 3 to 5 m wide, of fine-grained sediment. Mid-range sidescan-sonar images show that similarly furrowed surfaces are found on nearby areas of the lower continental slope, not associated with canyons. The furrows are overlain in places by Pleistocene sediments. Although they show evidence of erosional origin, they do not appear to be related to observed structures, and their straight, parallel pattern is not well understood. A general cover of flocky unconsolidated sediments implies that bottom-current erosion is not active now.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1983)11<182:FOOECO>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Robb, J.M., Kirby, J., Hampson, J.C., Gibson, P.R., and Hecker, B., 1983, Furrowed outcrops of Eocene chalk on the lower continental slop offshore New Jersey: Geology, v. 11, no. 3, p. 182-186, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1983)11<182:FOOECO>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"182","endPage":"186","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":296711,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -75.234375,\n              38.28993659801203\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.12548828125,\n              38.28993659801203\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.12548828125,\n              39.90973623453719\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.234375,\n              39.90973623453719\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.234375,\n              38.28993659801203\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"11","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"549165c3e4b0d0759afaad84","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robb, James M.","contributorId":73272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robb","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536801,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kirby, John R.","contributorId":91826,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kirby","given":"John R.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536802,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hampson, John C.","contributorId":90735,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hampson","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536803,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gibson, Patricia R.","contributorId":11539,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gibson","given":"Patricia","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":7135,"text":"Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University, Palisades, NY","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":536804,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Hecker, Barbara","contributorId":33843,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hecker","given":"Barbara","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":7135,"text":"Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University, Palisades, NY","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":536805,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

A persistent decrease of porosity with depth, similar to that of chalks of the Gulf Coast, occurs in these rocks. We make no attempt to differentiate depositional or diagenetic facies which produce scatter in the porosity-depth relationship; the dominant data trends thus are functions of carbonate rocks in general rather than of particular carbonate facies. Carbonate strata with less than 20% porosity are absent from the rocks studied here.

Aquifers and aquicludes cannot be distinguished on the basis of porosity. Although aquifers are characterized by great permeability and well-developed vuggy and even cavernous porosity in some intervals, they are not exceptionally porous when compared to other Tertiary carbonate rocks in south Florida. Permeability in these strata is governed more by the spacial distribution of pore space and matrix than by the total volume of porosity present.

Dolomite is as porous as, or slightly less porous than, limestones in these rocks. This observation places limits on any model proposed for dolomitization and suggests that dolomitization does not take place by a simple ion-for-ion replacement of magnesium for calcium. Dolomitization may be selective for less porous limestone, or it may involve the incorporation of significant amounts of carbonate as well as magnesium into the rock.

The great volume of pore space in these rocks serves to highlight the inefficiency of early diagenesis in reducing carbonate porosity and to emphasize the importance of later porosity reduction which occurs during the burial or late near-surface history of limestones and dolomites.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Since the beginning of this century, the population has shifted from nesting in numerous small colonies associated with freshwater marshes in interior California and southern Oregon to nesting primarily in large colonies on human-created habitats along the coast. Colonies at Grays Harbor, Washington and San Francisco and San Diego bays, California account for 77% of the current Pacific Coast population (6,000 pairs), which has breeding and wintering areas separate from those of populations east of the continental divide. There also appears to be some segregation on the wintering grounds by birds from the three major colonies within the Pacific population. Age-related seasonal movements in the Pacific population are characterized by (1) a brief period of northward dispersal by newly fledged birds before migrating to the wintering grounds, (2) a residency on the wintering grounds through their second winter, (3) a return to the breeding grounds the third summer, when most birds are thought to prospect breeding sites and some may breed, and (4) attainment of adulthood the fourth summer, with subsequent annual movements between wintering and breeding grounds.

The Pacific population has increased 70% since 1960, apparently all by intrinsic growth. Over half (57%) of the fledglings reach their fourth year, and they have a subsequent annual survival rate of 89% and a mean breeding life expectancy of 8.6 yr. An average annual fledging rate of 0.64 young per pair was calculated as necessary to have provided the observed growth of the population during its recent expansion. Growth of some of the individual colonies, however, particularly those in Washington, could only have resulted from extensive recruitment of birds from other Pacific Coast colonies. Philopatry is low in this population, and the growth of the northern colonies involved recruitment primarily of first- time breeders but also of some older adults. Factors promoting both first-time breeders and older adults to join new and often distant colonies are discussed.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","usgsCitation":"Gill, R., and Mewaldt, L., 1983, Pacific Coast Caspian Terns: Dynamics of an expanding population: The Auk, v. 100, no. 2, p. 369-381.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"369","endPage":"381","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":337561,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":337560,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/4086532 "}],"volume":"100","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58c90130e4b0849ce97abd6d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gill, Robert E. These are the Sedalia mine and two mines in the Turret district near Salida, and two mines in the Cochetopa district southeast of Gunnison. Two species were used, A. tridentata and A. frigida, depending on the area. Sagebrush clippings were separated into two subsamples consisting of (1) stems, and (2) leaves and blossoms stripped from the stems. These subsamples were ashed separately and the ash analyzed with an emission spectrograph for 30 elements. There appear to be no appreciable differences in the analyses of the two subsamples, indicating that composite samples would provide adequate information for further investigations. Eight of these elements, Ag, Bi, Cu, Pb, Sn, Y, Zn, and Zr, are present in notably higher concentrations in the ash of samples growing over mineralized ground than in that of control samples growing over barren ground. Fish samples from this site have consistently contained elevated levels of DDE since 1968. Surveys were made in 1976, 1978, and 1979 to determine the extent of organochlorine pesticide contamination in fishes and birds of the area. Freshwater fishes of Arroyo Colorado, a major waterway traversing the lower Rio Grande Valley, were highly contaminated with DDE and toxaphene residues compared to samples from other areas in the Valley; both DDE and toxaphene ranged up to 31.5 ppm wet wt in whole-fish composite samples. Median DDE residues in fish-eating bird carcasses from this area ranged up to 34 ppm wet wt, and 81 ppm in individual specimens. The levels of contaminants detected in fishes and birds were within, or above, the range producing adverse effects in certain species. The major sources of contamination to the Arroyo Colorado system likely stem from past and present use of persistent pesticides on surrounding croplands, and possibly from an abandoned pesticide plant at Mission, Texas.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Southwestern Naturalist","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"White, D.H., Mitchell, C.A., Kennedy, H., Krynitsky, A.J., and Ribick, M.A., 1983, Elevated DDE and toxaphene residues in fishes and birds reflect local contamination in the lower Rio Grande valley Texas USA: Southwestern Naturalist, v. 28, no. 3, p. 325-334.","productDescription":"pp. 325-334","startPage":"325","endPage":"334","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":173240,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"28","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1be4b07f02db606ea2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"White, Donald H.","contributorId":97868,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":312971,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mitchell, C. This general solution, contained in a USGS computer program, involves inverse formulas for the first projection and forward formulas for the second projection.","largerWorkTitle":"Technical Papers of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping","conferenceTitle":"Technical Papers of the 43rd Annual Meeting of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping.","conferenceLocation":"Washington, DC, USA","language":"English","publisher":"American Congress on Surveying & Mapping","publisherLocation":"Falls Church, VA, USA","usgsCitation":"Snyder, J., 1983, EFFICIENT TRANSFER OF DATA BETWEEN MAPS OF DIFFERENT PROJECTIONS., in Technical Papers of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, Washington, DC, USA, p. 332-340.","startPage":"332","endPage":"340","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221431,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a045ce4b0c8380cd5092e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Snyder, John P.","contributorId":16878,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Snyder","given":"John P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360491,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
