Analyses of rock samples from a drill hole 15 mi (24 km) south of the area showed anomalous amounts of several metals in the Derby-Doerun (usage of the Missouri Geological Survey), Potosi, and Eminence Dolomites, which suggests that these units as well as the subsurface Ordovician carbonate units may have a potential for zinc-lead mineralization in the wilderness. Also, a high-amplitude magnetic anomaly along the northwest side of the wilderness suggests a potential for a small to moderate-sized magnetite (iron ore) deposit in the Precambrian basement rocks at a depth of at least 2,100 ft (640 m) below the surface, probably at least partly outside the boundary of the wilderness. In both cases the significance of the potential cannot be evaluated without deep drilling. In the case of the possible magnetite deposit, drilling should be preceded by a detailed magnetic survey to delineate the anomaly more clearly. The wilderness has little potential for resources of industrial minerals because they are readily available elsewhere in the region, and no known potential for energy resources.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1494","usgsCitation":"Pratt, W.P., Erickson, R., Thomson, K.C., and Ellis, C., 1982, Geologic, geochemical and mineral resource potential map of the Piney Creek Wilderness, Stone and Barry counties, Missouri: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1494, Report: 6 p.; 1 Plate: 42.30 x 29.41 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1494.","productDescription":"Report: 6 p.; 1 Plate: 42.30 x 29.41 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":185449,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1494.jpg"},{"id":310081,"rank":701,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1494/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"3.31 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":310082,"rank":702,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1494/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate","size":"22.99 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate"},{"id":105922,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_7271.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"7271"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Missour","county":"Barry County, Stone County","otherGeospatial":"Piney Creek Wilderness","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93.42842102050781,\n              36.498321462439414\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.42842102050781,\n              36.548535045042556\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.3127212524414,\n              36.548535045042556\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.3127212524414,\n              36.498321462439414\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.42842102050781,\n              36.498321462439414\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db6880b0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pratt, Walden P.","contributorId":68296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pratt","given":"Walden","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Erickson, Ralph L.","contributorId":51599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erickson","given":"Ralph L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Thomson, Kenneth C.","contributorId":55478,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomson","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ellis, Clarence","contributorId":53470,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"Clarence","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259338,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" \"wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of the Mokelumne Wilderness, El Dorado National Forest, Amador, Calaveras and Alpine Counties, California and Caples Creek, Raymond Peak, and Tragedy-Elephants Back Roadless Areas, Alpine, Amador, Ca 1 aver as, and El Dorado Counties, California. The Mokelumne Wilderness was established by Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964, the Roadless Areas were classified as further planning areas during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, 1979.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1201D","usgsCitation":"McKee, E.H., Chaffee, M.A., Federspiel, F.E., McHugh, E.L., Cather, E.E., Scott, D., and Rumsey, C.M., 1982, Mineral resource potential map of the Mokelumne Wilderness and contiguous roadless areas, central Sierra Nevada, California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1201, Report: 10 p.; 1 Sheet: 41.11 x 34.66 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1201D.","productDescription":"Report: 10 p.; 1 Sheet: 41.11 x 34.66 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":184651,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1201D.PNG"},{"id":309404,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1201-D/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":309403,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1201-D/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"62500","country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Mokelumne Wilderness","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -120.25,38.416666666666664 ], [ -120.25,39 ], [ -119.75,39 ], [ -119.75,38.416666666666664 ], [ -120.25,38.416666666666664 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae474","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKee, Edwin H. mckee@usgs.gov","contributorId":3728,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKee","given":"Edwin","email":"mckee@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":260094,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chaffee, Maurice A. mchaffee@usgs.gov","contributorId":4047,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chaffee","given":"Maurice","email":"mchaffee@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":260099,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Federspiel, Francis E.","contributorId":28290,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Federspiel","given":"Francis","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":260093,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"McHugh, Edward L.","contributorId":77157,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McHugh","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":260096,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Cather, Eric E.","contributorId":54341,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cather","given":"Eric","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":260098,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Scott, Douglas F.","contributorId":69220,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"Douglas F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":260097,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Rumsey, Clayton M.","contributorId":50514,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rumsey","given":"Clayton","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":260095,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

Although favorable geologic environments for placer gold deposits and manganese vein deposits are present in the study area, the probability of discovering economically exploitable deposits of these metals is low, and not encouraging. Even more speculative is the study area's porphyry copper potential which is based solely on the possibility of favorable host terranes underlying the study area at depth. The study area does contain substantial deposits of pumice, but their economic significance is probably minor. Detailed cross sections normal to a linear feature show it to be an exhumed paleoshoreline containing several overlapping sandstone units. Each unit tends to pinchout into the shales of the overlying Menefee Formation, showing a range of depositional environments including upper shoreface, foreshore, washover and eolian. Paleogeomorphic elements, predominately beach ridges and interridge swales, shape the upper surface of the sandstone and produce a relief as great as 4.2 m. The various components found in the paleoshoreline create a trellis-like drainage pattern that contrasts with the regional dendritic drainage pattern; the resulting linear feature is easily discernible on aerial photography and LANDSAT images. The rapid lithologic and thickness changes of the sandstone bodies in these linear features provide excellent potential as stratigraphic trap for hydrocarbons. Paleoshoreline facies are likely to be preserved in areas of thickest marginal marine regressive sand accumulation and similar paleoshoreline systems may be preserved at depth in the Point Lookout (Sandstone) or other Cretaceous sandstones.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82135","usgsCitation":"Zech, R.S., 1982, Paleoshorelines in the Upper Cretaceous Point Lookout Sandstone, southern San Juan Basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-135, 25 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82135.","productDescription":"25 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144864,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0135/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39688,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0135/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db689a74","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zech, R. Such wells in Florida may be grouped into two broad types: (1) Surface-water injection wells, and (2) interaquifer connector wells. Surface-water injection wells are commonly used to supplement drainage for urban areas in karst terranes of central and north Florida. Data are available for 25 wells in the Ocala, Live Oak, and Orlando areas that allow comparison of the quality of water samples from these Floridan aquifer drainage wells with allowable contaminant levels. Comparison indicates that maximum contaminant levels for turbidity, color, and iron, manganese, and lead concentrations are equaled or exceeded in some drainage-well samples, and relatively high counts for coliform bacteria are present in most wells. Interaquifer connector wells are used in the phosphate mining areas of Polk and Hillsborough Counties, to drain mining operations and recharge the Floridan aquifer. Water-quality data available from 13 connector wells indicate that samples from most of these wells exceed standards values for iron concentration and turbidity. Geologic units in the basin include igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and granitic rocks predominate. Water from thermal springs ranges in temperature from 20.5 degrees to 94.0 degrees Celsius. The waters are slightly alkaline and are generally a sodium carbonate or bicarbonate type. Dissolved-solids concentrations are variable and range from 103 to 839 milligrams per liter. Estimated reservoir temperatures determined from the silicic acid-corrected silica, sodium-potassium-calcium, and sulfate-water isotope geothermometers range from 30 degrees to 184 degrees Celsius. Tritium concentrations in sampled thermal waters are near zero and indicate the waters are at least 100 years old and may be considerably older. Stable-isotope data indicate it is unlikely that a single area of recharge or a single hot-water reservoir supplies all hot springs in the basin. Thermal springs discharged at least 15,800 acre-feet of water in 1980. Associated convective heat flux is 27 million calories per second.
