As part of an intensive study of this earthquake sequence, the United States Geological Survey with support from the California Department of Water Resources conducted a seismic refraction experiment during July 1976 in the Oroville region. The objective of the experiment is to resolve more clearly the P- and S-wave velocity structure of the crust in the region as a basis for both more accurate hypocenter locations and evidence on the physical properties at depth within the crust.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77881","usgsCitation":"Spieth, M.A., and Hill, D.P., 1977, A compilation of data from the July, 1976 Oroville, California seismic-refraction experiment: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-881, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77881.","productDescription":"35 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408111,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0881/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143244,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0881/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Oroville","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.6241455078125,\n              39.4733054109641\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.49642944335938,\n              39.4733054109641\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.49642944335938,\n              39.552765371831015\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.6241455078125,\n              39.552765371831015\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.6241455078125,\n              39.4733054109641\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b0e5f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spieth, Mary Ann","contributorId":38990,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spieth","given":"Mary","email":"","middleInitial":"Ann","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162865,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hill, David P. hill@usgs.gov","contributorId":2600,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hill","given":"David","email":"hill@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":162864,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Malachite coatings along fractures in the ancient workings and nearby large piles of slag indicate the mine was worked for copper.
\n
Quartz porphyry of Precambrian age is the principal host rock of the deposit. The quartz porphyry is associated with volcanic rocks of mafic to intermediate composition. All rocks have been deformed and metamorphosed to various types of schist, of which quartz-sericite-chlorite schist is the most common.
\n
Mineralization is thought to be controlled by the convergence of three fault patterns that strike N 60°W., N 45°W and N. 20°W, respectively, and dip steeply west to vertical. Cross faults that extend between faults of the N 45°W. pattern have influenced deposition of sulfides locally. Southeast-plunging lineation derived from two converging directions of planar schistosity also may have exerted control on sulfide deposition.
\n
Detailed geologic mapping of surface features and geochemical and geophysical studies indicated that the deposit warranted subsurface exploration. Accordingly, eight holes were drilled that delineated possible economic-grade sulfide deposits in an area about 300 m long and which is known to continue to a depth of more than 200 m. However, drilling found copper-zinc mineralization along a strike length of 850 m. Drill findings show that copper and zinc sulfides partially replace chlorite and higher concentrations of chlorite generally define the higher-grade mineralization. The more intensely chloritized zones tend to follow the N.45°W. fracture pattern. South of drill hole KA-I, the sulfide mineralization may plunge 40° to 60° southeast.
\n
Indicated and inferred reserves outlined by drilling total 8,056,000 metric tons, the grade of which averages 0.31 g/t Au, 6.13 g/t Ag, 1.83 percent Cu, and 0.95 percent Zn.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr78519","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.W., Anderson, R.E., and Dehlavi, M., 1977, Geology and ore deposits of the Kutam Mine, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-519, Report: iii, 51 p.; Maps: 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78519.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 51 p.; Maps: 28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144498,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38973,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38974,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38975,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38976,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38977,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38978,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38979,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38980,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38981,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38982,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38983,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0519/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"2000","country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 43.5,\n 17.5\n ],\n [\n 43.5,\n 18\n ],\n [\n 44,\n 18\n ],\n [\n 44,\n 17.5\n ],\n [\n 43.5,\n 17.5\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad7e4b07f02db684460","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Charles W.","contributorId":41431,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162729,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Anderson, R. The wells tap stratified glacial deposits and derive part of their water from infiltration from a nearby river-pond system. The principal sources of the manganese seem to be coatings of oxides and other forms of manganese on granular aquifer materials and organic-rich sediments on the bottom of the pond and river. Chemical analyses of water from an observation well screened from 3 to 5 feet below the pond bottom indicate that infiltration of water through organic-rich sediments on the pond bottom is the likely cause of manganese enrichment in the well supplies. After passing through the organic layer, the water contains concentrations of manganese as high as 1.2 mg/liter. Manganese in water in concentrations that do not cause unpleasant taste is not regarded to be toxicologically significant. However, concentrations in excess of a few tenths of a milligram per liter are undesirable in public supplies and in many industrial supplies. Brown and others (21970) note that waters containing manganese in concentrations less than 0.1 mg/liter seldom prove troublesome, but that those containing more than 0.5 mg/liter may form objectionable deposits on cooked food, laundry, and plumbing fixtures. The U.S. Public health Service (1962) recommends that the concentrations of manganese in drinking and culinary water not exceed 0.05 mg/liter. The regional stratigraphic and structural setting of the Pierre Shale in the northern Great Plains is summarized from subsurface data. \r\n\r\nGeologic attributes mapped and employed in the identification of areas warranting further evaluation are: depth to the base of the Pierre Shale, shale thickness, overburden thickness, lithology and mineralogy of the shale, and penetrations by oil and gas wells. Three areas emerge as most favorable; each may contain many potential disposal sites. These large geologic study areas are further described on the basis of general structural and seismic considerations and are compared with respect to topography and mineral and water resources. \r\n\r\nA large area in west-central South Dakota is recommended for extensive further study. Contamination is most severe in late summer when fruit-canning operations and the influx of tourists create additional wastes. Silurian dolomite is the upper bedrock unit in the county and yields generally adequate supplies of very hard water with locally objectionable concentrations of iron and nitrate. Thin soil cover and well-fractured dolomitic bedrock give easy entry to ground-water contaminants throughout large parts of Door County. Many contaminants enter the dolomite by surface or near-surface seepage. There is little attenuation of contamination concentrations in the well-jointed dolomite, and contaminants may travel long distances underground in a relatively short time. The major source of ground-water contamination is bacteria, from individual waste-disposal systems, agricultural, industrial, and municipal wastes. Areas of the county underlain by contaminated zones include only a small percentage of the total ground-water system and are separated by large volumes of ground water free of contamination. The value of the report lies in the fact that interpretation of the hydrologic systems in the basin requires knowledge of the concurrent state of development of the water supply, because that development has progressively altered the local regimen of both surface water and ground water.
\n
\n
Most of the information for the earlier years was extracted and condensed from an investigation made by W. H. Hall, California State Engineer during the years 1878-87. Hall's study described irrigation development in southern California from its beginning through 1888. Information for the years following 1888 was obtained from the archives of the numerous water companies and water agencies in the Santa Ana River basin and from the various depositories of courthouse, county, and municipal records.
\n
\n
The history of water-resources development in the Santa Ana River basin begins with the introduction of irrigation in the area by the Spanish, who settled in southern California in the latter part, of the 18th century. The first irrigation diversion from the Santa Ana River was made in 1810 or 1811 by Jose Antonio Yorba and Juan Pablo Peralta. Irrigation remained a localized practice during the Mexican-Californian, or rancho, period following the separation of Mexico from Spain in 1821. Rancho grantees principally raised cattle, horses, and sheep and irrigated only small· plots of feed grain for their livestock and fruit crops for household use. The breakup of the ranchos through sales to Americans, who were migrating to California in ever-increasing numbers following the acquisition of California by the United States in 1848, marked the beginning of a rapid increase in water use and the beginning of widespread irrigation.
\n
\n
Many water companies and water agencies were organized to divert the surface flow of the Santa Ana River and its tributaries for irrigation. The Santa Ana River had been a perennial stream, except in years of extreme drought, from its source in the mountains nearly to the Pacific Ocean. With the great increase in population and the accompanying use of water for irrigation, the river was no longer a perennial stream, and it was necessary to supplement the surface-water supply with ground water. Many wells were dug or drilled in the artesian areas of the upper basin; of those wells many originally flowed, but as ground-water pressures and levels declined, an increasing amount of pumping was required.
\n
\n
Conservation measures were taken to store some of the surplus winter runoff for use during low runoff years and during summer periods of heavy demand. Conservation facilities included surface-storage reservoirs and water-spreading grounds or percolation basins for utilization of underground storage.
\n
\n
The competition for water in the Santa Ana River basin has been accompanied by frequent litigation over water tights, and over the years these water rights have generally been established by court decree.
\n
\n
Although the demand for water still increases, the water demand for agricultural use has declined since the mid-1940's in response to the rapid urbanization of agricultural areas. Since that date the continued expansion of communities has encroached significantly into the agricultural areas causing a decrease in water use for agriculture, a more than compensating increase in water use for municipal purposes, and a rapid change in the ownership of water rights.
\n
\n
The urbanization of flood plains made floods potentially more damaging than they previously had been when the flood plains were used for agriculture. In recognition of this increased hazard, flood-control facilities such as reservoirs, debris basins, flood-conveyance channels, and levees have been constructed to reduce potential damage. Most of the construction has occurred since the devastating flood of March 1938.
\n
\n
By the mid-1940's it was apparent that the local water supply--both surface and ground water--would be insufficient to meet the increasing demand in the basin. To augment the local supply, Colorado River water was purchased from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and released to the Santa Ana River beginning in August 1949. Additional supplemental water became available in the early 1970's from northern California through the conveyance facilities of the California Water Project.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Menlo Park, CA","doi":"10.3133/ofr77398","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources, San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, Western Municipal Water District of Riverside County","usgsCitation":"Scott, M., 1977, Development of water facilities in the Santa Ana River Basin, California, 1810-1968: a compilation of historical notes derived from many sources describing ditch and canal companies, diversions, and water rights: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-398, viii, 231 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77398.","productDescription":"viii, 231 p.","numberOfPages":"231","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287765,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287764,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0398/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Santa Ana River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -118.3003,33.4947 ], [ -118.3003,34.404 ], [ -116.3982,34.404 ], [ -116.3982,33.4947 ], [ -118.3003,33.4947 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65ddb3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scott, M.B.","contributorId":104497,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"M.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162486,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
