Although this assertion seems self-evident, seismologists have only recently begun to derive and test quantitative relations between common measures of strong ground motion and the dynamic characteristics of faulting. Interest in this problem has increased dramatically in past several years, however, resulting in a number of important advances. The research presented in this workshop is a significant part of this scientific development. Wells, including three Municipal-supply wells, obtain water from two confined aquifers 100-300 feet beneath the landfill area. Aquifer-test data and information on subsurface geology, ground-water levels, and properties of materials were used to estimate vertical gradients and vertical permeabilities under the landfill. The authors ' best estimates ' of vertical permeabilities of two confining units are 1 x 10 super -2 foot per day and 2 x 10 super -4 foot per day. Theoretical travel-time calculations indicate that minor amounts of pollutants may reach the upper confined aquifer after many tens of years, but that water of the composition of the leachate probably would not reach the aquifer for more than three centuries. The range of error in the theoretical travel-time calculations is likely to be plus or minus a factor of two or three. Most of the flow originates from the tributaries, the Soleduck, Bogachiel, and Calawah Rivers. Flow in the summer months from the Calawah River is about half that from either the Bogachiel or Soleduck Rivers. In the winter months flow from the Soleduck River is about 1 1/2 times that of the Bogachiel or Calawah Rivers. In general, the highest monthly flows during the winter are about 10 times greater than the lowest monthly flows during the summer except for the Dickey River where winter flows are about 20 times greater. Annual mean discharges may vary greatly from year to year, ranging from about 1/2 to 1 1/2 times the mean annual discharge. For the study period, the observed suspended-sediment concentration ranged from less than 1 to 2 ,150 milligrams per liter. The estimated mean annual suspended-sediment discharges were: Bogachiel River--400,000 tons (includes Calawah River); Calawah River--120,000 tons; Soleduck River--120,000 tons; Dickey River--75,000 tons; and other tributaries--10,000 tons, for a total of 606,000 tons transported annually by the Quillayute River. The estimated annual bedload of 21,000 tons was transported into the Quillayute River by the Soleduck, Bogachiel, and Dickey Rivers. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the San Joaquin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, is evaluating the potential for artificially recharging the aquifer system in eastern San Joaquin County, California. Through a well canvass and analyses of existing data on geology, soils, and drillers logs, this study (phase one of three phases) resulted in identification of 20 sites for exploratory test drilling in areas potentially favorable for artificial recharge. Ten of the sites are in areas adjacent to the Mokelumne River, six are in areas adjacent to the Calaveras River and Mormon Slough, and four are north of Littlejohns Creek. The purpose of the reconnaissance was to determine selected quality characteristics of the surface- and ground-water of the landfill and contiguous area; and to assess, generally, if leachate produced by the decomposition of landfill wastes was adversely impacting the downgradient water quality. Sampling results indicated that several water-quality characteristics were present in landfill ground water at significantly higher levels than in ground water upgradient or downgradient from the landfill. Moreover, many of these water-quality characteristics were found at slightly higher levels at down gradient site 5 than at upgradient site 1 which suggested that some downgradient movement of landfill leachate had occurred. For example, chloride and alkalinity in ground water had average concentrations of 20 and 290 mg/L at background wells (site 1), 144 and 610 mg/L at landfill wells (sites 2 and 4), and 29 and 338 mg/L at downgradient wells (site 5). A comparison of the 1977-78 sampling results with the National Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Regulations indicated that levels of iron and color in ground water of the study area frequently exceeded national maximum contaminant levels, dissolved solids, turbidity, lead, and manganese occasionally exceeded regulations. Concentrations of iron and levels of color and turbidity in some surface water samples also exceeded National maximum contaminant levels. Transient Water Quality Network were evaluated and compared using actual water-quality data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey. The field data were taken from steady-state studies of the Chattahoochee River in Georgia, the Willamette River in Oregon, and the Arkansas River in Colorado. The data used to evaluate the models covered a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological conditions. The Willamette River is a large sluggish stream, whereas the Arkansas River is a small dynamic stream. The Chattahoochee River is of moderate size. Each stream has unique water-quality characteristics that test a wide range of model options. Data were collected from April 1979 through June 1981. Runoff during the study period varied greatly with the majority of inflow occurring between December and May of each year. During 1980 and 1981 (through July 1981) precipitation totals at Lake Gregory were the maximum and minimum for the 19-year period of record. The average annual precipitation for the 3-year period 1979-81 was 47.4 inches, almost 10 inches greater than the long-term average, 1962-81, of 37.8 inches. Surface-water runoff in the Lake Gregory basin is highly dependent on annual precipitation, and total outflow for the 1980 water year and partial total for the 1981 (through June) water year was 7,230 acre-feet and 400 acre-feet, respectively. Streamflow was measured and water samples were collected three times at each of three sites during the study. All samples were collected during periods of stormwater runoff. The water was soft (7 to 20 milligrams per liter of hardness as calcium carbonate) and dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 36 to 74 milligrams per liter. Suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 7 to 144 milligrams per liter. The 5-day biochemical oxygen-demands, total-nitrogen concentrations and total-phosphorus concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 6.8 milligrams per liter, 0.54 to 5.8 milligrams per liter, and 0.03 to 0.56 milligram per liter, respectively. Fecal-coliform bacteria were present in large enough concentrations at two of the sites (340 to 490 colonies per 100 milliliters and 1,200 to 6,000 colonies per 100 milliliters) to indicate that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion for bathing waters and the Arkansas water-quality standard may be exceeded at times. Total-iron concentrations greater than 1,000 micrograms per liter (the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion for protection of freshwater aquatic life) were detected at least once at all sites. Using these at-a-station relations as a base, regional relations were then developed that characterize hydraulic features of streams throughout the study area. Channel size is an indication of flow magnitude. High flows affect channel formation, and the annual peak-flow array is a representation of these flows. The geometric mean of this array is a viable statistical index of channel-forming flows because it represents the relative magnitude of high flows at a site. Bankfull discharge is a physical index of flows dominating channel formation. The magnitude of the geometric mean approximately equates to bankfull discharge, on the average. Relations depicting hydraulic characteristics of a discharge equal to the geometric mean of annual peak flows may, therefore, be considered to be generally representative of channel conditions existing during bankfull discharge. The relations have application for predicting channel response to developments that would alter streamflow. Four tracts assessed were located in the outcrop of three coal groups and of other relatively impermeable rocks in the Pottsville Formation. Physical settings of the tracts and most other areas in the Warrior coal field are similar. This results in similar ground-water and surface-water characteristics, in similar impacts resulting from surface coal mining, and in maximizing the transfer-ability of data. Assessments of the tracts reflected the small storage of water in underlying rocks and corresponding low yields to wells and to the base flow of streams. Ground water and surface water in undisturbed areas are generally of good quality. Some subbasins in the tracts have already been impacted by mining. Estimates of streamflow characteristics and the availability and quality of ground water in the tracts were made using available methodology , or assessments based on local and regional data. Estimates of the degree mineralization of surface-water were made using methodology developed from other coal hydrology work. Climatic, physiographic, hydrologic, and land-use data were analyzed by regressions to derive relations for assessing water quality in streams draining mined and unmined areas. In this approach, an equation was derived to estimate specific conductance. Additional equations, based on relations between specific conductance and other constituents, allow estimates of mine drainage indicators such as hardness, dissolved solids, and sulfate. Hydrologic assessments of the tracts, based on limited verification data, proved to be reasonably accurate. Bear and Blue Creek basins are underlain predominantly by relatively impermeable consolidated rocks in the Pottsville Formation. Turkey and Yellow Creek basins are underlain predominantly by permeable unconsolidated rocks in the Coker Formation. \r\n\r\nWell yields from the Pottsville Formation generally range from 0 to 5 gallons per minute and those from the Coker Formation generally range from 5 to 100 gallons per minute. With the exception of locally objectional concentrations of dissolved iron and manganese, ground water in the basins is suitable for most uses. \r\n\r\nStreamflow distribution reflects seasonal precipitation. Storm runoff is characterized by concentrated peakflows of short duration that rapidly recede to low flow. Streams draining basins underlain mainly by the Pottsville Formation frequently go dry, whereas those draining basins underlain chiefly by the Coker Formation have well-sustained low flows.\r\n\r\nSurface water is generally acidic and low in dissolved solids. Water in streams draining basins underlain chiefly by the Pottsville Formation is slightly more mineralized and less acidic than water in streams draining areas underlain chiefly by the Coker Formation. Climatic, physiographic, hydrologic, and land-use data are analyzed by regressions to derive relations for estimating water quality in streams draining mined and unmined areas. \r\n\r\nThe impacts of mining on the hydrologic systems are identified as increased erosion and sedimentation, baseflow augmentation, decline in groundwater levels, and degradation of water quality. \r\n\r\nA digital model was calibrated to simulate streamflow for Bear, Blue, and Yellow Creeks under unmined conditions. The highest levels of the potentiometric surface, 57 and 58 feet above sea level, were measured near the outcrop-subcrop of the aquifer in topographically high areas of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. The potentiometric surface slopes to the southeast to about sea level along much of the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Three distinct and extensive cones of depression have developed in the potentiometric surface around the well fields of the Annapolis area, Waldorf area, and Chalk Point. Several square miles of each cone are below sea level, and in some areas at Chalk Point and Waldorf, the cone is more than 50 feet below sea level.
