The program uses the method of moments in contrast to the more commonly used but less inclusive graphic method of Folk and Ward (1957).\r\n\r\nThe merits of the program are: (1) it is rapid; (2) it can accept data in either grouped or ungrouped format; (3) it allows direct comparison with grain-size data in the literature that have been calculated by the method of moments; (4) it utilizes all of the original data rather than percentiles from the cumulative curve as in the approximation technique used by the graphic method; (5) it is written in the computer language BASIC, which is easily modified and adapted to a wide variety of computers; and (6) when used in the HP-9830A, it does not require punching of data cards. Lower, middle, and upper coal groups are recognized. The middle coal group, in the lower coal-bearing member of the Williams Fork Formation, contains two thick, persistent coal beds in the Foidel Creek area. The Wadge coal bed, stratigraphically the higher of the two, reaches thicknesses of 3.7 meters, and is strippable beneath large areas on the south slope of Eckman Park. Coal resources of the Wadge bed in the Foidel Creek area--an area of 134 square kilometers, as defined in this study--are estimated to be 317 million metric tons. The Foidel Creek EMRIA reclamation study site--an area of 10.9 square kilometers--contains about 36.1 million metric tons of Wadge coal, as much as 28.1 million metric tons of which occur beneath overburden 61 meters or less in thickness. About 52 meters lower in the section, the Wolf Creek coal bed locally exceeds 6.1 meters in thickness. Coal resources of the Wolf Creek bed in the Foidel Creek area are estimated to be 434 million metric tons. S. Geological Survey. Maps are prepared on the basis of water levels measured in wells each May to coincide with seasonal low levels, and in September, when levels are high. The mapped area contains nine producing well fields which supplied 67.2 million gallons on September 8, 1976, to municipalities along the Gulf Coast. The water is from the Floridan aquifer, the major aquifer in Florida. The effect of localized withdrawal of ground water is shown on the maps as cones of depression in both the potentiometric and water-table surfaces. These data are being released separately from and prior to the interpretive report, to make them available to interested parties at the earliest possible time.</p><p>Table 1 contains temperature-profile data for 30 wells; their general locations are shown in figure 1. The well locations were estimated from aerial photographs and topographic maps; no effort was made to survey the sites and as a result some locations may be slightly in error.</p><p>Temperatures were measured using thermistor, 4-conductor cable, and a digital multimeter. Meter readings were in ohms, but were converted to temperature by a calibration graph. The electronic thermometer is capable of an accuracy to 0.01°C, and readings were so recorded. Because of variations in field conditions, the temperature data in many wells probably is accurate only to 0.1°C. Depths below land surface were measured using a sheave and attached counter. The shifting channel and flooding of the Río Pilcomayo \"Superior\" also are problems to be considered before development. The Río Pilcomayo \"Alto\" basin has relatively little deposition whereas the \"Superior\" basin has considerable deposition. A part of the \"Superior\" channel is filled with sediment to the top of its banks. A description of the procedures used at sea and in the laboratory and a short preliminary summary of the shipboard results also is included.</p><p>The involvement of Marine Geotechnical Laboratory (MGL), Lehigh University, personnel in the 1976 Atlantic Margin Coring Project can be divided into two phases. In Phase One, the Lehigh nuclear-transmission densitometer was rebuilt to process cores at sea more rapidly than previously had been done in the laboratory, the equipment was assembled and tested aboard the Glomar Conception, and at-sea geotechnical measurements were made during the duration of the cruise.</p><p>Data sheets were prepared for both unopened core sections (Appendix III) and split-core samples (Appendix IV). Completed data forms are on file at the MGL and at the Geological Survey in Woods Hole.</p><p>Phase Two included reduction of the shipboard data, testing of all geotechnical samples taken from cores split aboard the ship, and certain other analytical work ashore utilizing the geotechnical measurements. Water content and weight/volume bulk density tests were performed at the MGL. Specific gravity and Atterberg limit tests and certain calculations were performed by Geological Survey personnel at the Corpus Christi, Texas, laboratory.</p><p>During Phase One, 37 unopened, 1.5-m-long core sections were selected by Lehigh personnel for subsequent static and dynamic triaxial and consol­idation testing ashore. The disposition of these cores is controlled by Geological Survey Project personnel; they are not further discussed in this report.</p><p>A depth convention has been adopted in this report for the convenience of labeling core sections and analyzing the data. Each 9.2-m-long (30 ft) core liner had a maximum penetration depth referenced to the water-sediment interface; these data are given in Hathaway, et al. (1976). Each 9.2-m-long core liner was cut into six or fewer sections, each 1.5 m (5 ft) in length, aboard the ship. To the maximum penetration depth, 0.2 m was subtracted to obtain the depth at the bottom of the first 1.5 m section above the core catcher. To obtain values at the bottom of the remaining 1.5 m sections, an additional 1.5 m was added for each section. The depth of the bottom of each core section was used for all values obtained using the nuclear densitometer. Tests within core sections and samples collected from core sections were assigned depths based on the location of the test or sample within the core section. It should be clearly recognized that all depths within a 9.2-m-long core are estimates of the true depth, which cannot be uniquely calculated because of the uncertainty of the relationship of sediment contained within the core liner to true in situ depths.</p><p>This report is considered to be preliminary because the author has not had access to the final lithologic logs or paleontological results, upon which a more accurate description of geotechnical results could be based. Repeated sampling over a 5-month period eventually delineated a helium anomaly along the main 11.2 km traverse, and that anomaly may be related to a uranium occurrence. A single traverse is difficult to interpret. A grid sampling pattern, no more time consuming than a repeated linear traverse, is preferred.
