The region includes the basins of the Souris River within Montana and North Dakota; the Red River of the North in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota; and the Rainy River within Minnesota. The region includes 59,645 square miles, mostly in North Dakota and Minnesota.</p>\n<p>The terrain is relatively flat, but ranges in altitude from 2,541 to 750 feet. Annual average precipitation ranges from 14 inches in the west to 28 inches in the east and about 75 percent of it is rain. The mean annual snow fall ranges from 32 inches in the west to 64 inches in the east. Temperatures range from -55&deg; to 118&deg;F (-48.3&deg; to 47.8&deg;C). Irrigation is needed at least part of the time to assure crop production, particularly in the western part of the region.</p>\n<p>Sand and gravel deposits in the drift form the most important fresh-water aquifers. Other aquifers are found in at least parts of the region in the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Tertiary rocks. The potentiometric surface in the bedrock generally decreases in altitude toward the Red River of the North, indicating that the general direction of ground-water movement is toward the river. Ground-water with less than 3,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids is available throughout the region.</p>\n<p>Ground water with less than 1,000 milligrams per liter occurs in most of the region east of the Red River of the North and in most of the shallow aquifers west of the river. The total volume of water available from storage having less than 3,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids is estimated to be 5 x 10<sup>8</sup> acre-feet. In addition to the fresh and slightly saline water, the region has abundant highly mineralized water that can be considered as a resource. Yields of wells in individual bedrock aquifers are generally less than 100 gallons per minute but locally yields may be as much as 500 gallons per minute and more. Yields in drift aquifers are frequently less than 100 gallons per minute but range from 5 to 1,000 gallons per minute. In a few places outwash yields more than 1,000 gallons per minute.</p>\n<p>Ground water is the sole or a primary source of water supply in much of the region, including supplies for irrigation, domestic and livestock, municipal, and industrial needs. Reportedly, the potential irrigation development is 1,550,000 acres, as compared with 50,200 acres in 1975. Both ground- and surface-water supplies would be required to meet these demands. Rural domestic and livestock water supplies are derived almost entirely from ground-water sources. Smaller communities and towns generally rely on ground water, and the cities and industries use ground water, surface water, or both. The municipalities using surface water generally depend upon reservoir storage. Water quality rather than quantity is the greater water-supply problem for many communities in the region.</p>\n<p>Increased demands on both ground-water and surface-water supplies likely will be made in the future. Storage of surface water in the ground-water reservoirs during times of surplus for withdrawal during times of scarcity would aid in meeting these demands. The surplus (flood) water is of better chemical quality than underlying ground water in parts of the western half of the region. Fresh water could be stored in saline- or fresh-water aquifers, and pumped out later, as needed. Thus, the ground-water reservoirs have a definite present and potential role in water management.</p>\n<p>To understand the hydrologic system for management purposes there is a need to determine more adequately the geologic and hydrologic characteristics of existing aquifers and the location of new aquifers. Also, as pumping and other stresses on any part of the hydrologic system affect other parts of the system, monitoring programs ideally should be started and maintained to detect changes and determine effects of the stresses.</p>\n<p>Many alternatives are available for managing water in the region. Some of these are operational and others are undergoing research. Adequate hydrologic information is needed to aid in solving problems of water supply, use and pollution.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77565","usgsCitation":"Reeder, H.O., 1977, Summary appraisals of the Nation's ground-water resources; Souris-Red-Rainy region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-565, 125 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77565.","productDescription":"125 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143865,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0565/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38598,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0565/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"2.98 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -105.40283203124999,\n              49.03786794532644\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.185546875,\n              49.06666839558117\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.1416015625,\n              49.52520834197442\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.74609375,\n              49.32512199104001\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.482421875,\n              48.864714761802794\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.69140625,\n              48.69096039092549\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.0322265625,\n              48.719961222646276\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.28515625,\n              48.516604348867475\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.845703125,\n              48.40003249610685\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.3623046875,\n              48.19538740833338\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.7470703125,\n              48.28319289548349\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.384765625,\n              48.1367666796927\n            ],\n            [\n              -90,\n              47.724544549099676\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.2744140625,\n              47.15984001304432\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.373046875,\n              46.70973594407157\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5703125,\n              45.73685954736049\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.712890625,\n              45.398449976304086\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.0751953125,\n              45.30580259943578\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.525390625,\n              45.82879925192134\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.5361328125,\n              46.10370875598026\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.81054687499999,\n              46.89023157359399\n            ],\n            [\n              -101.953125,\n              47.07012182383309\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.3154296875,\n              47.54687159892238\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.150390625,\n              47.84265762816538\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.2490234375,\n              48.3416461723746\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.40283203124999,\n              49.03786794532644\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db6995d7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reeder, Harold O.","contributorId":14381,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reeder","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161995,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report brings together available information on the occurrence, age, and paleoecologic, significance of benthonic foraminifers and presents correlations based on these data from 16 measured stratigraphic sections and 12 exploratory wells. Relatively few reports employing modern taxonomic methods developed during the past 40 years have been published on foraminiferal biostratigraphy of the Gulf of Alaska. Reports by Cushman (1941), Cushman and Todd (1947), Tappan (1951), Todd (1953), Loeblich and Tappan (1953), Todd (1957), Rau (1963), Cooper (1964), and Todd and Low (1967) are primarily concerned with taxonomy, ecology and paleoecology, or the geologic age of assemblages from isolated outcrops. Almost no data have been published on foraminiferal correlations of measured sections and wells. The paucity of such information has prompted the synthesis and interpretation of foraminiferal data that provide the framework of correlation presented in this report. Some of the benthonic provincial stages that have been assigned to lower and middle parts of the Tertiary of other west coast areas are recognized for the Gulf of Alaska. Divisions for the upper part of the Tertiary are broad, but specific faunal occurrences are recognized as possible aids to correlations. Regional correlations presented in this report are necessarily broad and may be modified and redefined when new data become available from the current round of exploratory drilling for petroleum in the offshore part of the Gulf of Alaska Tertiary Province.</p><p>It is anticipated that this report will be of particular interest to readers associated with petroleum exploration. As a convenience to them and because most foraminiferal data from wells, including those of this report, are from cuttings, all checklists are arranged to show plainly the highest occurrence of each species within each measured section and well. Furthermore, in conformity with these data, all sections and wells are described from the top to bottom. The text describes the stratigraphic and paleoecologic significance of foraminifers by biostratigraphic units and by individual sections and wells.</p><p><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77747","usgsCitation":"Rau, W.W., Plafker, G., and Winkler, G., 1977, Preliminary foraminiferal biostratigraphy and correlation of selected stratigraphic sections and wells in the Gulf of Alaska Tertiary province: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-747, Report: 54 p.; 3 Plates: 41.55 x 61.43 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77747.","productDescription":"Report: 54 p.; 3 Plates: 41.55 x 61.43 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424031,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424030,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424029,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424028,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144887,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Gulf of Alaska Tertiary province","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -149.97116633018743,\n              61.50297682156986\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.97116633018743,\n              59.05829668369461\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.4228186787198,\n              59.05829668369461\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.4228186787198,\n              61.50297682156986\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.97116633018743,\n              61.50297682156986\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c35a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rau, Weldon W.","contributorId":95866,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rau","given":"Weldon","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161971,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Plafker, George","contributorId":3920,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161969,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Winkler, Gary R.","contributorId":75513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winkler","given":"Gary R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161970,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Early effusives of the complex, although slightly altered, are probably chemically, and petrographically, more like the calc-alkalic Fraction Tuff (Miocene) of the northern Nellis Air Force Base Bombing and Gunnery Range to the north, whereas effusives of later Miocene age, such as the Paintbrush and Timber Mountain Tuffs, are alkali-calcic.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77724","usgsCitation":"Quinlivan, W.D., and Byers, F., 1977, Chemical data and variation diagrams of igneous rocks from the Timber Mountain-Oasis Valley Caldera Complex, southern Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-724, Report: ii, 9 p.; 14 Plates: 22.00 × 23.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77724.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 9 p.; 14 Plates: 22.00 × 23.00 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":94984,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94983,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94982,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94981,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94980,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94979,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94986,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94985,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405496,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14507.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38571,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143403,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":94992,"rank":413,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94991,"rank":412,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94990,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94989,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94988,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94987,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Timber Mountain-Oasis Valley Caldera Complex","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.75,\n              36.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.894,\n              36.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.894,\n              37.367\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.75,\n              37.367\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.75,\n              36.75\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67bb5d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Quinlivan, W. Fractures and root tubes with chemically oxidized and (or) reduced soil in their walls extend to 3 to 4.5 meters below natural land surface. Preliminary simulations of pressure heads with a digital model suggest that hydraulic conductivity is an order of magnitude greater in the fractured till near land surface than at greater depth. Hydraulic gradients are predominantly downward, even beneath small valleys. The upper part of a body of underlying lacustrine silt is unsaturated; in the lower, saturated part, slow lateral flow may occur. In the older trenches, water began to build up in 1971, overflowed briefly in 1975, and was pumped out in 1975-76. Water levels rose abruptly during major rainstorms in mid-1975, indicating rapid infiltration through cracks in the cover material. The new trenches have maintained low, stable water levels, perhaps because of thicker, more compact cover and less waste settlement; pressure heads near these trenches are low, locally approaching zero, perhaps because of slight infiltration and limited near-surface storage. Peak tritium concentrations in test-hole cores (generally 0.00001 to 0.001 microcuries per milliliter) were found within 3 meters of land surface and are attributed to surface contamination. Concentrations declined rapidly with depth within the fractured till; secondary peaks found at about 9 meters in three holes are attributed to lateral migration from trenches. Other radioisotopes were detected only near land surface. Samples from the walls of shallow fractures revealed no accumulation of radioisotopes. Dakota mines in the adjacent Ambrosia Lake mining district were visited briefly for comparative purposes. \r\n\r\nMines in the eastern part of the Gallup district, and in the Ambrosia Lake district, are on the Chaco slope of the southern San Juan Basin in strata which dip gently northward toward the central part of the basin. Mines in the western part of the Gallup district are along the Gallup hogback (Nutria monocline) in strata which dip steeply westward into the Gallup sag. \r\n\r\nGeologic factors which controlled formation of the uranium deposits in the Dakota Sandstone are: (1) a source of uranium, believed to be uranium deposits of the underlying Morrison Formation of Late Jurassic age; (2) the accessibility to the Dakota of uranium-bearing solutions from the Morrison; (3) the presence in the Dakota of permeable sandstone beds overlain by impermeable carbonaceous shale beds; and (4) the occurrence within the permeable Dakota sandstone beds of carbonaceous reducing material as bedding-plane laminae, or as pockets of carbonaceous trash. \r\n\r\nMost of the Dakota uranium deposits are found in the lower part of the formation in marginal-marine distributary-channel sandstones which were deposited in the backshore environment. However, the Hogback no. 4 (Hyde) Mine (Gallup district) occurs in sandy paludal shale of the backshore environment, and another deposit, the Silver Spur (Ambrosia Lake district), is found in what is interpreted to be a massive beach or barrier-bar sandstone of the foreshore environment in the upper part of the Dakota. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary depositional environment most favorable for the accumulation of uranium is that of backshore areas lateral to main distributary channels, where levee, splay, and some distributary-channel sandstones intertongue with gray carbonaceous shales and siltstones of the well-drained swamp environment. Deposits of black carbonaceous shale which were formed in the poorly drained swamp deposits of the interfluve area are not favorable host rocks for uranium. \r\n\r\nThe depositional energy levels of the various environments in which the sandstone and shale beds of the Dakota were deposited govern the relative favorability of the strata as uranium host rocks. In the report area, uranium usually occurs in carbonaceous sandstone deposited under low- to medium-energy fluvial conditions within distributary channels. A prerequisite, however, is that such sandstone be overlain by impermeable carbonaceous shale beds. \r\n\r\nLow- to medium-energy fluvial conditions result in the deposition of sandstone beds having detrital carbonaceous material distributed in laminae or in trash pockets on bedding planes. The carbonaceous laminae and trash pockets provide the necessary reductant to cause precipitation of uranium from solution. High-energy fluvial conditions result in the deposition of sandstones having little or no carbonaceous material included to provide a reductant. Very low energy swampy conditions result in carbonaceous shale deposits, which are generally barren of uranium because of their relative impermeability to migrating uranium-bearing solutions.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77766","usgsCitation":"Pierson, C.T., and Green, M.W., 1977, Factors controlling localization of uranium deposits in the Dakota Sandstone, Gallup and Ambrosia Lake mining districts, McKinley County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-766, v, 62 leaves :ill., maps ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77766.","productDescription":"v, 62 leaves :ill., maps ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144311,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0766/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38517,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0766/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d7e4b07f02db5de9a8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pierson, Charles Thomas","contributorId":13216,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pierson","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"Thomas","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161814,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Green, Morris W.","contributorId":36554,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Green","given":"Morris","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161815,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
