The Islip landfill was started in 1933, the Babylon landfill in 1947. The landfills are in contact with and discharge leachate into the highly permeable upper glacial aquifer hydraulic conductivity 190 to 500 ft/d. The aquifer is 74 feet thick at the Babylon landfill and 170 feet thick at the Islip landfill. The leachate-enriched water occupies the entire thickness of the aquifer beneath both landfills, but hydrologic boundaries retard downward migration of the plumes to deeper aquifers. The Babylon plume is 1,900 feet wide at the landfill and narrows to about 700 feet near its terminus 10,000 feet from the landfill. The Islip plume is 1,400 feet wide at the landfill and narrows to 500 feet near its terminus 5,000 feet from the landfill. Hydrochemical maps and sections show the distribution of the major chemical constituents of the plumes. The most highly leachate-enriched ground water obtained was from the Babylon site; it contained 860 mg/liter sodium, 110 mg/liter potassium, 565 mg/liter calcium, 100 mg/liter magnesium, 2,700 mg/liter bicarbonate, and 1,300 mg/liter chloride. Simulation of the movement and dispersion of the Babylon plume with a mathematical dispersion model indicated the coefficient of longitudinal dispersion to be about 60 feet squared per day and the ground-water velocity to be 1 ft/d. However, the velocity determined from the hydraulic gradient and public-supply wells in the area was 4 ft/d, which would cause a plume four times as long as that predicted by the model. A few exceptions, such as Bengton’s report of the first isolation and description of the type C organism, are included for their historical interest. The low-flow characteristics presented are the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years (Q7, 2) and the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 10 years (Q7, I0).</p>\n<p>To provide accurate and consistent low-flow characteristics for uniform evaluation of waste effluent, a long-term period of streamflow record was used for the analyses. The record selected for the study was 1915-75. This was found to be the most representative that included longterm streamflow conditions and various degrees of regulation by storage reservoirs.</p>\n<p>The Q7, 10 discharge on the Wisconsin River ranged from lUO cubic feet per second at the Wisconsin River at Rainbow Lake near Lake Tomahawk gaging station to 2,790 cubic feet per second at the Wisconsin River at Muscoda gaging station. On the Fox-Wolf Rivers, the Q7, 10 ranged from 360 cubic feet per second at Fox River at Berlin to 950 cubic feet per second at Fox River at Rapide Croche dam near Wrightstown.</p>\n<p>Low-flow characteristics that reflect unregulated and regulated conditions on the upper Wisconsin River were compared. This analysis showed no apparent difference in Q7, 10 discharge values due to regulation at the Wisconsin River at Merrill gaging station, although a more detailed study is warranted to fully evaluate the effect of storage.</p>\n<p>The magnitude of the low-flow characteristics are in some instances affected by the period of record. These characteristics can vary as much as &plusmn;30 percent at some gaging stations depending on whether or not the severe drought of the 1930's was included in the Simulations of a hypothetical slurry pipeline of 1000-mile length transporting 12.5 million tons per year indicate that pipeline costs and energy requirements are quite sensitive to the coal-to-water ratio. For realistic water prices, the optimal ratio will not vary far from the 50/50 ratio by weight. In comparison to other methods of energy conversion and transport, coal-slurry pipeline utilize about 1/3 the amount of water required for coal gasification, and about 1/5 the amount required for on-site electrical generation. An analysis of net energy output from operating alternative energy transportation systems for the assumed conditions indicates that both slurry pipeline and rail shipment require approximately 4.5 percent of the potential electrical energy output of the coal transported, and high-voltage, direct-current transportation requires approximately 6.5 percent. The environmental impacts of the different transports options are so substantially different that a common basis for comparison does not exist. All the mountain streams contain soft water (classified as 0-60 mg/L hardness as CaC03), and the lowland streams, drains, and canal contain soft to very hard water (more than 180 mg/L hardness as CaC03). The water is generally of suitable quality for irrigation, and neither salinity nor sodium hazards are a problem in waters from any of the streams studied. </p><p>The specific conductance of water from the major aquifers ranged from 20 to 1 ,540 micromhos. Ground water was most dilute in mineral content in the Klickitat River basin and most concentrated in part of the Satus Creek basin. The ground water in the Satus Creek basin with the most concentrated mineral content also contained the highest percentage composition of sulfate, chloride, and nitrate. For drinking water, the nitrate-nitrogen concentrations exceeded the U.S. Public Health Service 's recommended limit of 10 mg/L over an area of several square miles, with a maximum observed concentration of 170 mg/L. The main source of water is the ground water in the several aquifers that are made up of one or more formations. The aquifers are stacked one on the other and generally are not hydraulically connected; the composite stratigraphic column indicates the relative position of the formations. The main waterbearing units are the N and D aquifers, the Toreva and Wepo Formations, and the alluvium. The geologic structure and topographic relief preclude a uniform depth to water in the area; therefore, recommended drilling depths should be determined on an individual site basis. Ground-water development has been mainly for public, domestic, and livestock supplies, In 1975 about 500 acre-ft of ground water was withdrawn from the aquifers in the southern part of the black Mesa area; mo st of the water was from the N aquifer. In 1951-76-the period for which data were used to compile these maps-withdrawals from the N aquifer resulted in water-level declines in parts of the area . Measurable changes in water levels have not occurred in the other aquifers in the 25-year period.</p><p>The hydrologic data on which these maps are based are available, for the most part, in computer-printout form for consultation at the Arizona Water Commission, 222 North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix, and at U.S. Geological Survey offices in: Federal Building, 301 West Congress Street, Tucson; Valley Center, Suite 1880, Phoenix; and 2255 North Gemini Drive, Building 3, Flagstaff. The NASA-Johnson Space Center (NASA-JSC) in southeastern Harris County, Texas, was about 13 to 19 feet above mean sea level in 1974 and sinking at a rate of more than 0.2 foot per year. NASA-JSC officials, concerned about the hurricane flooding hazard, requested the U.S. Geological Survey to study the feasibility of artificially recharging the aquifers for subsidence abatement. Hydrologic digital models were developed for theoretical determinations of quantities of water needed, under various well-array plans, for artificial recharge of the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers in order to halt the local subsidence at NASA-JSC. The programs for the models were developed for analysis of three-dimensional ground-water flow. Total injection rates of between 2,000 and 14,000 gallons per minute under three general well-array plans were determined for a range of residual clay pore pressures of 10 to 70 feet of hydraulic head. The space distributions of the resultant hydraulic heads, illustrated for injection rates of 3,600 and 8 ,400 gallons per minute, indicated that, for the same rate, increasing the number and spread of the injection locations reduces the head gradients within NASA-JSC.
