Contamination is most severe in late summer when fruit-canning operations and the influx of tourists create additional wastes. Silurian dolomite is the upper bedrock unit in the county and yields generally adequate supplies of very hard water with locally objectionable concentrations of iron and nitrate. Thin soil cover and well-fractured dolomitic bedrock give easy entry to ground-water contaminants throughout large parts of Door County. Many contaminants enter the dolomite by surface or near-surface seepage. There is little attenuation of contamination concentrations in the well-jointed dolomite, and contaminants may travel long distances underground in a relatively short time. The major source of ground-water contamination is bacteria, from individual waste-disposal systems, agricultural, industrial, and municipal wastes. Areas of the county underlain by contaminated zones include only a small percentage of the total ground-water system and are separated by large volumes of ground water free of contamination. The aquifer material is commonly very fine sand to fine gravel, and grain size generally increases from south to north. Thickness, transmissivity, and theoretical well yields are highest in the northern part. In places, saturated thickness exceeds 100 feet, transmissivity exceeds 20,000 feet squared per day, and expected well yields exceed 2,000 gallons per minute.</p>\n<p>Water in the aquifer is chemically suitable for irrigation. It is calcium bicarbonate water generally containing dissolvedsolids concentrations of 100-300 milligrams per liter.</p>\n<p>An estimated long-term water budget for the aquifer involves inflow and outflow of 295 cubic feet per second. Over 80 percent of recharge to the aquifer is directly from snowmelt and spring rain; the remainder is from underflow across the northern boundary of the aquifer and locally from streams and lakes. Over 90 percent of discharge from the aquifer is flow to streams and lakes; the remainder is through evapotranspiration.</p>\n<p>A mathematical model of the surficial aquifer was made to facilitate analysis of the hydrologic system. The model was calibrated through simulation of the natural ground-water flow system. Subsequent applications of the model to estimate effects of future ground-water development indicate that much of the system can safely support long-term, large-scale withdrawals.</p>\n<p>Results of model analysis show that present development (withdrawals totaling 3.3 cubic feet per second) has no significant effect on the aquifer system. Simulations of hypothetical withdrawals of 60 to 120 cubic feet per second resulted in computed water-table declines as great as 12 feet in places. Most pumpage is derived from intercepted base flow to streams, thus reducing streamflow. Similarly, some lake levels can be expected to decline in response to nearby intensive development.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, Prior to construction, samples of water, bed material, and soil were collected throughout the impoundment site to determine concentrations of nutrients, insecticides, trace metals, suspended sediment, and bacteria.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Analyses of water suggest the Tulpehocken Creek basin to be a highly fertile environment. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations near the proposed dam site had median values of 4.5 and 0.13 mg/L, respectively.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Suspended sediment discharges average between 100 and 200 tons (90.7 to 181.4 metric tons) per day during normal flows but may exceed 10,000 tons (9,070 metric tons) per day during storm runoff. Highest yields were measured during winter and early spring. Concentrations range from 3 mg/L to more than 500 mg/L.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Bed material samples contain trace quantities of aldrin, DDT, DDD, DDE, dieldrin, and chlordane. Polychlorinated biphyenyls (PCB's) ranged from 10 to 100 μg/kg.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Soils at the impoundment site are of average fertility. However, the silt loam texture is ideal for attachment and growth of aquatic plants.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Bacteria populations indicative of recent fecal contamination are prevalent in the major inflows to the proposed lake. Fecal Coliform exceeded the standards recommended by the Federal Water Pollution Administration Committee on Water Quality Criteria for public water supply in 29 percent of the monthly samples, and exceeded the recommended public bathing waters standard in 83 percent of the samples collected from June to September.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Arsenic from an industrial waste was found in the water, suspended sediment, and bed material of Tulpehocken Creek in concentrations of 0 to 30 μg/l, 2 to 879 μg/l, and 1 to 79 μg/g, respectively. Malachite coatings along fractures in the ancient workings and nearby large piles of slag indicate the mine was worked for copper.</p>\n<p>Quartz porphyry of Precambrian age is the principal host rock of the deposit. The quartz porphyry is associated with volcanic rocks of mafic to intermediate composition. All rocks have been deformed and metamorphosed to various types of schist, of which quartz-sericite-chlorite schist is the most common.</p>\n<p>Mineralization is thought to be controlled by the convergence of three fault patterns that strike N 60&deg;W., N 45&deg;W and N. 20&deg;W, respectively, and dip steeply west to vertical.&nbsp;Cross faults that extend between faults of the N 45&deg;W. pattern have influenced deposition of sulfides locally. Southeast-plunging lineation derived from two converging directions of planar schistosity also may have exerted control on sulfide deposition.</p>\n<p>Detailed geologic mapping of surface features and geochemical and geophysical studies indicated that the deposit warranted subsurface exploration. Accordingly, eight holes were drilled that delineated possible economic-grade sulfide deposits in an area about 300 m long and which is known to continue to a depth of more than 200 m. However, drilling found copper-zinc mineralization along a strike length of 850 m. Drill findings show that copper and zinc sulfides partially replace chlorite and higher concentrations of chlorite generally define the higher-grade mineralization. The more intensely chloritized zones tend to follow the N.45&deg;W. fracture pattern. S. Geological Survey. Maps are prepared on the basis of water levels measured in wells each May to coincide with seasonal low levels, and in September, when levels are high. The mapped area contains nine producing well fields which supplied 67.2 million gallons on September 8, 1976, to municipalities along the Gulf Coast. The water is from the Floridan aquifer, the major aquifer in Florida. The effect of localized withdrawal of ground water is shown on the maps as cones of depression in both the potentiometric and water-table surfaces.
