Although solution of the underlying rocks is the ultimate cause of sinkholes, some have been induced by abrupt changes in ground-water levels caused by pumping. Declines in water levels cause loss of support to the bedrock roofs over cavities and to surficial material overlying openings in the top of bedrock. The volume of calcium, magnesium , and carbonate (the constituents of limestone and dolomite) in solution in the water withdrawn from four well fields near Tampa totaled about 240,000 cubic feet in 1978. Most induced solution takes place at the limestone surface however, and the area of induced recharge is so extensive that the effect of induced limestone solution on sinkhole development is negligible. Alinement of established sinkholes along joint patterns in the bedrock suggests that a well along these lineations might have direct hydraulic connection with a zone of incipient sinkholes. Therefore, pumping of large-capacity wells along such lineations would increase the probability of sinkhole development. Although sinkholes generally form abruptly in the study area, local changes such as vegetative stress, ponding of rainfall, misalinement of structures, and turbidity in well water are all indications that percollapse subsidence may be taking place. Proterozoic crystalline rocks are exposed as inselbergs or rock pediment surfaces along the western border of the quadrangle. The crystalline basement is metavolcanic rock intruded by plutonic to hypabyssal rocks consisting of diorite and gabbro, biotite tonalite gneiss, biotite-hornblende monzogranite, biotite-sodic amphibole granite, and syenogranite to quartz syenite, listed in the inferred order of emplacement. Rhyolite-dacite fels, associated with andesitic to basaltic metavolcanic flow rocks and minor amphibolite, is interpreted to have resulted from metasomatic alteration of the flow rocks during emplacement of granitic plutons. \r\n\r\nThe Wajid Sandstone, of Cambrian to Ordovician age, is largely a coarse-grained quartz arenite with pebbly phases; common crossbedds indicate north-northwest to north-northeast directions of sand transport. Beds are cemented by iron oxide, carbonate, and minor quartz. The Wajid Sandstone is exposed only in the northwestern and northern parts of the quadrangle. \r\n\r\nQuaternary deposits record a climate that became increasingly more arid. They include Holocene and Pleistocene(?) alluvial and fluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and silt, minor carbonate crusts, and eolian sand and silt. Gravel terraces and gravel plains less than 10 m above the present major wadi channels are widespread and commonly are overlain by marly silt along the wadis. Between major wadis, which discharge into the Rub al Khali basin, gravel-topped surfaces are partly covered by a complex of low, sinuous, discontinuous, generally northwest trending transverse sand dunes. Normal to this trend, higher and more extensive linear dunes and dune complexes, including seif (irq) dunes as high as 50 m, have encroached southwestward. The transverse and linear dunes may represent two stages of advance separated by a pluvial cycle. Studies of aerial photographs indicate that the dunes have not changed appreciably in shape or size between 1951 and 1959, although some seif dunes have advanced their leading edges 15 to 25 m. \r\n\r\nNo potentially economic mineral resources other than sand and gravel were found.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr82610","usgsCitation":"Sable, E.G., 1982, Reconnaissance geology of the Jabal Shaqran Quadrangle, sheet 17/44 B, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-610, 1 map :photocopy ;56 x 53 cm., on sheet 70 x 78 cm. +1 text (iii, 19 p. ill. ; 28 cm.), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82610.","productDescription":"1 map :photocopy ;56 x 53 cm., on sheet 70 x 78 cm. +1 text (iii, 19 p. ill. ; 28 cm.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":136880,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0610/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":80142,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0610/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":80143,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0610/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640949","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sable, Edward G.","contributorId":51273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sable","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":226368,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Maximum abundances in the altered mineralized rocks in the contact zone are 450 ppm uranium and 480 ppm thorium. Interpretation of factor analysis of the spectrochemical and delayed neutron analytical data suggests the presence of five geological factors which account for 82 percent of element covariance of 34 elements in 61 samples. The factors are identified as (1) limestone source rock reactions; (2) monzonite source rock reactions; (3) hydrothermal element group 1; (4) rare earth group; and (5) hydrothermal element group 2. The last factor effects the distribution of, primarily, beryllium, uranium, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, and secondarily, thorium, tin, and zinc; it is identified as the prime mineralization factor. \r\n\r\nThe Notch Peak intrusive area has been a tungsten producing area since before the 1940's and the location of small-scale gold placer operations. It is the principal source of municipal, industrial, and agricultural water supply in south Georgia and most of Florida. The aquifer, known as the Floridan aquifer in Florida and the principal artesian aquifer in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina, includes various carbonate units of Paleocene to early Miocene age that are hydraulically connected in varying degrees. Very locally, in the Brunswick, Ga., area, a thin sequence of rocks of Late Cretaceous age is part of the system. In general the aquifer consists of either one vertically continuous permeable zone or two major permeable zones separated by a less permeable unit of highly variable water-transmitting characteristics. Aquifer conditions range from unconfined to confined depending upon whether the clayey Miocene and younger rocks that form the upper confining unit have been removed by erosion.\r\n\r\nDigital model simulation shows that prior to development, most flow in the aquifer occurred in the unconfined and thinly confined areas of northwest and central Florida and southwest Georgia. Springs in these areas are visible evidence of major flow activity. Spring discharge to streams accounted for about 90 percent of the average predevelopment discharge from the regional aquifer. About 18,100 cubic feet per second left the limestone aquifer as spring flow, and 2,500 cubic feet per second discharged as diffuse upward leakage from the confined areas where the vertical head gradient was upward. Most of the 20,600 cubic feet per second recharge necessary to balance total discharge entered the limestone aquifer in the unconfined and thinly confined areas. Because the areas of greatest recharge before development were near the areas of highest discharge, flow paths were generally short. Much water went into and out of the limestone quickly. A very active shallow flow system at the expense of deep circulation has evolved in unconfined and sligptly confined spring areas. Transmissivities commonly exceed 1,000,000 feet squared per day.\r\n\r\nIn contrast, predevelopment flow in the aquifer in the tightly confined areas of southeast and coastal Georgia, far west Florida, and in south Florida was sluggish. In these areas the aquifer is overlain by several hundred feet of sand and clay, except for the outcrop areas along the updip limit of the aquifer. This thick overburden severely retards discharge from the aquifer, causing lethargic flow. Large-discharge springs are nonexistent. The south Florida and southeast Georgia segments of the flow system, which taken together occupy about 50 percent of the regional system, only accounted for slightly more than 3 percent of the predevelopment regional limestone discharge. Transmissivities are on the average lower (generally less than 250,000 feet squared per day) than those in areas of high-flow activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82905","usgsCitation":"Bush, P.W., 1982, Predevelopment flow in the Tertiary limestone aquifer, southeastern United States: A regional analysis from digital modeling: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-905, v, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82905.","productDescription":"v, 41 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":35732,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0905/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402563,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35647.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":142050,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0905/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Florida, Georgia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -89,24 ], [ -89,34 ], [ -80,34 ], [ -80,24 ], [ -89,24 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67ea30","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bush, Peter W.","contributorId":57820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bush","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Samples used were collected for a 1978 study in the central part of the Deep Creek Range, Juab County, Utah. \r\n\r\nComputed correlations among elements in granitic igneous rock samples suggest a high degree of covariation among elements that compose the rock. Uranium, however, shows significant correlation with only 12 elements and almost zero correlation with thorium. Computed correlations among elements in the derived sediment suggest that major decreases have occurred in covariation of the elements in the derived sands. Uranium in the sands, however, shows 15 significant correlations compared to 12 in the igneous rock samples, and shows an extremely high correlation with thorium. One of the data sites was located upstream from the five-mile long excavated reach and served as a background station. Changes in various characteristics of this Coastal Plain stream were determined by comparing data collected before, during, and after the construction period. After deepening of the channel by more than 2 feet, ground-water levels within 100 feet of the stream declined a proportionate amount; however, levels in a well 500 feet from the stream were unchanged. Flow velocities during channel deepening were 100 percent higher than velocities prior to construction. An average increase in water temperatures of about one degree Celsius was observed following removal of trees and brush that provided shading to the stream. After construction, concentrations of dissolved oxygen also increased. The percent of saturation increased 20 to 25 percent in the lower values. Maximum concentrations of suspended sediment increased from about 75 mg/L prior to construction to over 2000 mg/L during construction. The solubility of the carbonate minerals may be a major control on the absolute and relative concentrations of calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, iron, manganese, and lead; however, other mechanisms probably control the concentrations of cadmium and zinc. Statistical analyses indicate that the mean concentrations of the major ions in the two climatic areas studied are significantly (P=0.05) different from one another, with larger mean concentrations in the more arid area. Trace-metal concentrations were similar from one area to another and indistinguishable from site to site (P=0.05) for lead, cadmium, and zinc. Linear regressions of major ion concentration to specific conductance are similar in both areas for sodium, bicarbonate, sulfate, and chloride. Results of the study may be useful in providing a first approximation of stream chemistry in other watersheds with the same geologic setting, determining watersheds with similar geochemical controls, and determining future changes in stream chemistry in the watersheds studied. The aquifer in Kansas underlies an area of 31,000 square miles in the western and south-central part. This aquifer is a hydraulically connected assemblage of unconsolidated water-bearing deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age. Maps published at a scale of 1:500,000 show the altitude and configuration of the water table in Kansas during 1965. Groundwater moved from higher altitudes in the western part of the High Plains to lower altitudes in the eastern part at a average rate of 10 ft/mi. The upgradient flexure of water table contours along some of the valleys indicates that groundwater was discharged to the streams in those areas. The proposed site was believed to be a relatively undisturbed synclinal structure containing a thick argillite unit of Misslsslppian age, the Eleana Formation unit J, which would be the emplacement medium. Data acquisition for the geophysical studies was constrained because of rugged topography in a block of Tipplpah Limestone overlying the central part of the proposed site. This study employed gravity, magnetic, seismic refraction and reflection, and four distinct electrical methods to try and define the structural integrity and shape of the proposed repository medium. Detailed and regional gravity work revealed complex structure at the site. Magnetics helped only in identifying small areas of Tertiary volcanic rocks because of low magnetization of the rocks. Seismic refraction assisted in identifying near surface faulting and bedrock structure. Difficulty was experienced in obtaining good quality reflection data. This implied significant structural complexity but also revealed the principal features that were supported by other data. Electrical methods were used for fault identification and for mapping of a thick argillaceous unit of the Eleana Formation in which nuclear waste was to be emplaced. \r\n\r\nThe geophysical studies indicate that major faults along the axis of Syncline Ridge and on both margins have large vertical offsets displacing units so as not only to make mining difficult, but also providing potential paths for waste migration to underlying carbonate aquifers. The Eleana Formation appeared heterogeneous, which was inferred to be due to structural complexity. Only a small region in the northwest part of the study area was found to contain a thick and relatively undisturbed volume of host rock.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82145","usgsCitation":"Hoover, D., Hanna, W.F., Anderson, L.A., Flanigan, V.J., and Pankratz, L.W., 1982, Geophysical studies of the Syncline Ridge area, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-145, 72 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82145.","productDescription":"72 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140180,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0145/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34602,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0145/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b437","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoover, D.B.","contributorId":37734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoover","given":"D.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154740,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hanna, W.
