The objectives were to estimate the density and porosity of the formations penetrated, and to determine the precision and repeatability of borehole gravity data in shallow wells. A detailed account of field techniques and analysis of data quality has been given by Byerley (1977). Its frequency response is such that the recorded background noise at a moderately quite Coast Range site has a relatively flat 'record' spectrum from about 1/3 Hz to about 20 Hz. With the system magnification set so that the background noise is clearly recorded (about 1 mm peak-to-peak) one can anticipate that any seismic signal that exceeds background noise appreciably in this spectral region will be large enough to be seen on the seismogram. This response represents the highest sensitivity and broadest bandwidth that we were able to attain with a 1-Hz seismometer, a simple amplifier VCO employing very low-power integrated circuits, and an 8-channel constant-bandwidth FM subcarrier multiplex system for use with commercial voice-grade phone lines. The well penetrated four sand and gravel strata of low water-yielding capacity and extended 37 ft into metamorphic bedrock. Earth water-bearing stratum was pumped for several hours, and the best aquifer yield was found to be 1.7 gal/min/ft of drawdown. These test results support the conclusion, previously inferred from drilling data at a nearby test hole drilled in 1973, that there are no confined aquifers of large yield in the subsurface at this locality. Past conditions, recent history, current retreat, and possible future changes are summarized from an analysis of reports, photographs of the glacier (1939, 1950, and annually since about 1960), and data on snow and ice balance and bathymetry (1972). Between 1900 and 1972, the glacier terminus retreated 3.4 kilometers, and the lower part of the glacier thinned 200 meters. Climatic change controlled the retreat until about 1930; since then deep water at the terminus has influenced the calving retreat. The calving rate and present terminus position cannot be sustained by current climatic conditions and rate of snow accumulation. Thus the glacier will continue to recede until the terminus stabilizes in shallower water, probably about 1.5 kilometers upvalley from the present terminus and in about year 2020, assuming no change in present climatic conditions and calving rate. Possible small climatic changes could cause a shift in the point at which annual snow accumulation equals annual ablation (500 meters) and a corresponding change in terminus behavior. The lava rock aquifer contains water that is almost as saline as seawater. The saline water is below a seaward-discharging freshwater lens, and separated from it by a transition zone of varying salinity. Injection of wastewater at an average rate of 6.2 cubic feet per second is planned through wells open only to the aquifer deep within the saline water zone. The lava rock aquifer is overlain by a sequence of residual soil, clay, coral reef deposits, and marine sand that form a low-permeability caprock which semiconfines the lava rock aquifer.

A two-dimensional finite-difference model was used to describe initial conditions within the freshwater part of the aquifer, and to indicate response of the freshwater part of the system to injection of wastewater. Steady-state distribution of the wastewater within the saline and the freshwater parts of the lava rock aquifer was simulated by use of a three-dimensional finite-difference model. This model, using vertical-to-horizontal ratios of hydraulic conductivity of 1:10 and 1:100, shows that wastewater with a lesser density than that of either the saline or freshwater aquifer, will form a roughly cylindrical column around the injection well base and rise through the transition zones into the freshwater lens flow system. The column diameter varies with the ratio, and the column, or plume, widens progressively through the transition zone, then maintains virtually constant size through the freshwater part of the lava rock aquifer. Seaward flow within the freshwater lens tends to distort the plume seaward.

Under conditions measured and assumed for the study, it is evident that wastewater injected at the planned rate will move upward, then seaward without significant change. After reaching a new steady state, the wastewater will discharge into and through the caprock sequence within an area measuring approximately 1,000 feet inland, 1,000 feet laterally on either side of the injection site, and about 2,000 feet seaward. Little, if any, of the injected wastewater may be expected to reach the upper part of the caprock flow system landward of the treatment plant facility.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77469","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with County of Maui Department of Public Works","usgsCitation":"Burnham, W., Larson, S.P., and Cooper, H.H., 1977, Distribution of injected wastewater in the saline-lava aquifer, Wailuku-Kahului wastewater treatment facility, Kahului, Maui, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-469, vii, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77469.","productDescription":"vii, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":396612,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0469/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140647,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0469/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Kahului, Maui","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.48788452148438,\n              20.873568860790446\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.44325256347656,\n              20.873568860790446\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.44325256347656,\n              20.903720104844798\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.48788452148438,\n              20.903720104844798\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.48788452148438,\n              20.873568860790446\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae78c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burnham, W.L.","contributorId":58668,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burnham","given":"W.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157172,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Larson, Steven P.","contributorId":78718,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Larson","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157173,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cooper, Hilton H.","contributorId":106867,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooper","given":"Hilton","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157174,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Excitation is a vertically incident shear wave in the underlying medium. The nonlinear hysteretic behavior of the soil is represented by a model consisting of simple linear springs and Coulomb friction elements arranged as shown. A boundary condition is used which takes account of finite rigidity in the elastic substratum. The computations are performed by an explicit finite-difference scheme that proceeds step by step in space and time. A brief program description is provided here with instructions for preparing the input and a source listing. A more detailed discussion of the method is presented elsewhere as is the description of a different program employing implicit integration.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr77671","usgsCitation":"Joyner, W.B., 1977, A FORTRAN program for calculating nonlinear seismic ground response: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-671, 16 p.; Figures; Appendices, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77671.","productDescription":"16 p.; Figures; Appendices","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":116759,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_77_671.gif"},{"id":110893,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0671/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd4954e4b0b290850ef0e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Joyner, William B.","contributorId":39786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Joyner","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160186,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Because streams are small, undependable and relatively inaccessible to most users, ground water is the most important source for increased industrial and agricultural water use. Southeast of Moultrie the principal artesian aquifer is very productive, and has transmissivity in excess of 145,000 feet squared per day (13,500 meters squared per day). A structural or paleogeographic feature called the Suwannee strait traverses the county from near the southwest corner to the northeast corner. In this strait, limestone in the principal artesian aquifer is partly replaced by fine-grained clastic sediment, impairing transmissivity and making wells hard to construct. Transmissivity is much lower northwest of the strait than it is southeast, probably because of facies changes in the aquifer.
\n
In the belt of the hypothesized Ochlockonee fault, water containing greater-than-usual concentrations of dissolved solids is produced. This anomaly could be the result of the fault having acted as a conduit when the vertical hydraulic gradient was upward from a deeper aquifer, or be the result of the movement of ground water from a sulfate-rich source in the sediments of the Suwannee strait. In south-central Colquitt County, clay-capped permeable beds extending above potentiometric surfaces create conditions favorable for breathing wells.
\n
Predominantly clastic beds of Miocene age overlie the Suwannee Limestone. These beds have a transmissivity of about 2,280 feet squared per day (215 meters squared per day), but they are of comparatively little importance because larger yields can be obtained from the underlying principal artesian aquifer. Moreover, wells are difficult to construct in the poorly consolidated clastic sediments, and water from these shallow beds is likely to be depleted during droughts.
\n
The ground water is generally hard, but is otherwise of good quality. One exception is near the hypothesized Ochlockonee fault where water contains higher-than-usual concentrations of various ions, especially sulfate. Another exception occurs along the axis of the Suwannee strait where clay minerals in the channel facies may soften the water by ion exchange.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Oxidizing, silica undersaturated, alkaline solutions are eluted through a column of rhyolitic glass shards at a carefully controlled temperature, pressure, and flow rate. The solutions are monitored for the concentration of uranium and selected additional elements (Si, K, Li, F), and the glass is recovered and examined for physical and/or chemical evidence of attack. The flushing mode is designed to mimic leaching of glass shards by intermittent, near-surface waters with which the glass is not in equilibrium. \r\n\r\nReported rates are applicable only to the experimental conditions (120?C, 7,000 psi), but it is assumed that the reaction mechanisms and the relative importance of rate-influencing parameters remain unchanged, at reduced temperature and pressure. Results of the above experiment indicate that silica and uranium are released from glass shards at comparable rates, while lithium and potassium are released faster and fluorine slower than either Si or U. Rates of release of silica and uranium correlate positively with the surface area of the shards. Rhyolitic shards release uranium at faster rates than rhyodacitic shards of comparable surface area. Changes in the shards resulting from experimental treatment and observed in the original glass separates from an Oligocene ash (compared to a Pleistocene ash) include; surface pitting, increased surface area, devitrification rinds (<1l micron wide) and reduced lithium contents. Future investigations will study the effect of temperature, pressure, solution composition, and flow rate on the relative mobility of U, Si, Li, F, and K.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77744","usgsCitation":"Zielinski, R.A., 1977, Uranium mobility during interaction of rhyolitic glass with alkaline solutions: dissolution of glass: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-744, 36, [5] leaves of plates :ill. ;28 cm.; (41 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77744.","productDescription":"36, [5] leaves of plates :ill. ;28 cm.; (41 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145048,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0744/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39701,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0744/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db60541a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zielinski, Robert A. 0000-0002-4047-5129 rzielinski@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4047-5129","contributorId":1593,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zielinski","given":"Robert","email":"rzielinski@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":163765,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
