At least 18 new uranium occurrences were found, most of which are less than a square meter. These discoveries enlarge the uraniferous area reported by Young and Hauff in 1975. Uranium in these biotite concentrations occurs in several modes: as uraninite grains; in accessory minerals, such as zircon; in fractures in plagioclase; and along grain boundaries and in cleavage openings in mica. Uranium mineralogy in the fractures, grain boundaries, and micas is not known. Yellow, secondary uranium minerals are seen locally on outcrop. Relative to crustal abundance, the radioactive biotite concentrations in migmatized biotite gneiss show depletion in Ca, Sr, Na, and, locally, Cu, but pronounced enrichment in U and Mo, and moderate enrichment in Pb, Ag, Th, and REE. The radioactive biotite concentrations in the Silver Plume Granite show pronounced enrichment in Th, and moderate enrichment in U, Sn, Zr, and Ag. Enrichment in light REE predominates over heavy REE. As U is more abundant in biotite concentrations in migmatized biotite gneiss than in biotite concentrations in Silver Plume Granite, I have concluded that U in the migmatized biotite gneiss was present before intrusion of the Silver Plume Granite, and that metamorphic effects of the Silver Plume intrusion remobilized U to form pockets of enrichment (biotite concentrations).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82730","usgsCitation":"Young, E.J., 1982, Uranium in Wheeler Basin, Grand County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-730, 31 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82730.","productDescription":"31 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144758,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0730/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39673,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0730/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db6054a1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Young, E. Discharge data at four streamflow gaging stations indicated that from 5 to 29% of the average annual precipitation on a drainage runs off streams, mainly during the snowmelt period (spring and summer). Most of the base flow of streams originates as spring discharge in the higher altitudes of drainages. Peak flows, average 7-day flood flows, and flood depths were related to basin characteristics in order to develop flood equations for ungaged sites. Chemical quality of surface water was suitable for most uses. Dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 97 to 835 milligrams per liter in 61 samples collected throughout the area. Data from wells and coal-test holes, and a comprehensive spring inventory indicate that groundwater occurs in all geologic units exposed in the study area. The coal-bearing Blackhawk Formation and underlying Star Point Sandstone are saturated in most areas. Some future mining operations would require dewatering of the Star Point-Blackhawk aquifer. Most of the springs issue from the Flagstaff Limestone and North Horn Formation above the Star Point-Blackhawk aquifer. It is not known whether water in the Flagstaff and North Horn is perched. Dissolved-solids concentrations in groundwater ranged from 105 to 1,080 milligrams per liter in 87 analyzed samples. Water levels in wells, the discharge of springs, benthic invertebrates in streams, and quantity and quality of mine effluents all need to be monitored in order to detect changes in the hydrologic system caused by coal mining. The displacements occurred prior to any significant aftershocks on either fault and thus are classed as sympathetic. Although the main shock was located in an exceptionally seismogenic part of Imperial Valley, about 20 km distant from either fault, no clear evidence of surface faulting has yet been found in the epicentral area. Horizontal displacement on the Imperial and Superstition Hills faults, southeast and southwest of the epicenter, respectively, reached maxima of 8 mm and 14 mm, and the discontinuous surface ruptures formed along approximately equal lengths of northern segments of the two structures (16.8 km and 15.7 km, respectively). The maximum vertical component of slip on the Imperial fault, 6 ram, was observed 3.4 km north of the point of largest horizontal slip. Vertical movement on the Superstition Hills fault was less than 1 mm. No new displacement was found along the traces of the Brawley fault zone, the San Andreas fault, or the part of the Coyote Creek fault that slipped during the 1968 Borrego Mountain earthquake. A careful search in the epicentral area of the main shock failed to locate any definite evidence of surface faulting. Concentrations of late aftershocks north and northeast of Calipatria near the southeastward projection of the San Andreas fault occurred mostly after our field check; this area was not investigated.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82282","usgsCitation":"Sharp, R.V., Lienkaemper, J.J., and Rymer, M.J., 1982, Surface displacement on the Imperial and Superstition Hills faults triggered by the Westmorland, California, earthquake of 26 April 1981: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-282, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82282.","productDescription":"37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":412049,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75629.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38877,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0282/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143628,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0282/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Imperial and Superstition Hills faults","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -115.83126556491355,\n 33.126411297926936\n ],\n [\n -115.83126556491355,\n 32.758080537034004\n ],\n [\n -115.41947560542245,\n 32.758080537034004\n ],\n [\n -115.41947560542245,\n 33.126411297926936\n ],\n [\n -115.83126556491355,\n 33.126411297926936\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db697293","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sharp, R. The water was generally very hard (hardness as calcium carbonate greater than 180 milligrams per liter). The concentrations of principal dissolved constituents varied throughout the year in relation to releases from Possum Kingdom Lake and to runoff from the intervening drainage area.
\n
Thermal stratification in Lake Granbury usually begins during April and persists until September or October. Stratification causes significant seasonal and areal variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, which in turn cause variations in the concentrations of dissolved iron and manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Oxygen Utilized in the decay of organic matter and bottom material is not replenished during periods of summer stagnation, and water below depths of 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters) usually contains less than 1.0 milligram per liter of dissolved oxygen. Variations in the concentrations of dissolved solids are associated with localized inflows.
\n
During periods of summer stagnation, reducing conditions result in the dissolution of iron and manganese from the bottom deposits in the lake. At site Ac, a deep site near De Cordova Bend Dam, iron concentrations in water near the bottom during summer stagnation ranged from 50 to 700 micrograms per liter and averaged 230 micrograms per liter. Manganese concentrations ranged from 1,300 to 3,700 micrograms per liter and averaged 1,800 micrograms per liter. During periods of winter circulation and in water near the surface during summer stagnation, both iron and manganese concentrations averaged less than I00 micrograms per liter.
\n
The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest during summer stagnation in water near the bottom at deep-water sites. At site A c during the summer, the concentration of total inorganic nitrogen averaged 2.37 milligrams per liter and the concentration of total phosphorus averaged 0.19 milligram per liter. The concentrations of both these constituents in waters near the surface during the entire year and in bottom waters during the winter averaged 0.07 milligram per liter or less.
\n
Seasonal-temperature variations and variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen result in dissolved iron and manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus being recycled within the lake; however, no significant accumulations of these constituents were detected.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr82676","usgsCitation":"Andrews, F.L., and Strause, J.L., 1982, Water quality of Lake Granbury, north-central Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-676, vi, 155 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82676.","productDescription":"vi, 155 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140624,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0676/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35196,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0676/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4affe4b07f02db697e5e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Andrews, Freeman L.","contributorId":91486,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andrews","given":"Freeman","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156512,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Strause, Jeffrey L.","contributorId":61420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Strause","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156511,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This report, which is for fiscal year 1980, may be of use to cooperating agencies and to the users of water data in that it summarizes and gives the status of the basic data-collection program and all current studies of the Water Resources Division in New Mexico. The New Mexico District, along with other Federal and State agencies, shares in the responsibility for the appraisal of the quantity, quality, and distribution of surface- and ground-water resources of the State of New Mexico. During fiscal year 1980, the District had 28 active projects, had released 24 reports, and had answered hundreds of requests for water-related information. All are associated with quartz veins, stringers, and stockworks. Samples from both types of deposits have low silver and base-metal contents; samples from deposits within ferruginous chert have anomalous arsenic contents. None of the deposits are large enough to be considered as prime exploration targets at this time. Analytical results from the Bani Sar deposit, which is located within felsic plutonic rocks, are encouraging, but additional surface investigations are needed to define the size and extent of the mineralized zone. Deposits associated with ferruginous chert are also of exploration interest. This map shows the distribution of dissolved-solids concentrations and is based on about 1,330 chemical analyses collected from about 900 wells between 1974 and 1978. On the west side of the valley some of the smaller streams contribute water of higher dissolved-solids concentrations to the ground water. The sources of these waters are thought to be the upper Cretaceous Chico Formation or marine deposits of Early Cretaceous age that are exposed in the Coast Ranges.
