This report presents a summary of hydrologic data and an evaluation of areas where additional hydrologic data are needed to provide a data base suitable for use in making decisions regarding future water development.

The largest and most dependable surface-water supplies that can be obtained without storage from tributary streams, as indicated by the 30-day low flow with recurrence interval of 10 years, potentially are available from the lower Grand River (15 to 30 million gallons per day) and the Nodaway and Chariton Rivers (5 to 10 million gallons per day). Flow of the Missouri River is greater than 1,300 million gallons per day at all points in Missouri. Surface water is primarily a calcium bicarbonate
type with dissolved-solids concentration less than 400 milligrams per liter.

Sources of water in surficial deposits are the Missouri River alluvium (well yields as much as 2,000 gallons per minute), glacial drift (well yields of 30 to 500 gallons per minute), and alluvium of tributary streams (well yields exceed 50 gallons per minute in large basins). The Pennsylvanian bedrock yields only a few gallons per minute to wells. The Cambrian and Ordovician formations are not evaluated because data are few, and there are no water wells open to these units. Water from the alluvium is a hard, calcium bicarbonate type that commonly has relatively large iron concentrations and typically has dissolved-solids concentrations of less than 500 milligrams per liter. Water from the glacial-drift and bedrock generally is a mixed calcium bicarbonate sodium sulfate type, is hard, has relatively large iron concentrations, and some of it is classified as saline.

Areas where additional hydrologic data are needed to provide a data base suitable for use in making decisions regarding future water development include the lower Grand and Thompson River basins, the Missouri River alluvial aquifer, the Nodaway-Tarkio-One Hundred and Two River basins, the Chariton River basin, and the 19 counties where surface-mineable coal reserves make coal-related industrial expansion possible.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8227","usgsCitation":"Skelton, J., Harvey, E.J., and Miller, D.E., 1982, Water information for northwestern Missouri: A planning document: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-27, iii, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8227.","productDescription":"iii, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160066,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0027/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":349815,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0027/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Missouri","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.7843017578125,\n              40.588928169693745\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.68017578125,\n              39.0533181067413\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.99951171875,\n              38.56964280859044\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.30712890625,\n              40.59727063442024\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.7843017578125,\n              40.588928169693745\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa1b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Skelton, John","contributorId":70392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Skelton","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202044,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Harvey, Edward Joseph","contributorId":32131,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harvey","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"Joseph","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202043,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Miller, Don E.","contributorId":29485,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Don","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202042,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

S. Geological Survey","docAbstract":"
The U.S. Geological Survey has developed an oilspill risk analysis model to aid in estimating the environmental hazards of developing oil resources in Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lease areas. The large, computerized model analyzes the probability of spill occurrence, as well as the likely paths or trajectories of spills in relation to the locations of recreational and biological resources which may be vulnerable. The analytical methodology can easily incorporate estimates of weathering rates , slick dispersion, and possible mitigating effects of cleanup. The probability of spill occurrence is estimated from information on the anticipated level of oil production and method of route of transport. Spill movement is modeled in Monte Carlo fashion with a sample of 500 spills per season, each transported by monthly surface current vectors and wind velocities sampled from 3-hour wind transition matrices. Transition matrices are based on historic wind records grouped in 41 wind velocity classes, and are constructed seasonally for up to six wind stations. Locations and monthly vulnerabilities of up to 31 categories of environmental resources are digitized within an 800,000 square kilometer study area. Model output includes tables of conditional impact probabilities (that is, the probability of hitting a target, given that a spill has occurred), as well as probability distributions for oilspills occurring and contacting environmental resources within preselected vulnerability time horizons. Calcite and (or) aragonite are the most common of all the precipitated minerals. Gypsum and (or) anhydrite, as well as barite and native sulfur, are less common but are also believed to be precipitated minerals. Precipitated manganese and iron oxides, including romanechite, manganite, pyrolusite, goethite, and hematite, were found in some of the samples. Various salts of sodium, including halite and thenardite, were also identified. Dolomite and an unknown type of siliceous material are present in some of the samples and were possibly precipitated at the spring sites. Quartz, feldspar, and mica are present in many of the samples and are believed to be detrital contaminants. \r\n\r\nAn autoradiographic and thin section study of 11 samples from nine of the most radioactive spring sites showed the radioactivity, which is due primarily to radium, to be directly associated with mineral phases containing barium, manganese, iron, and (or) calcium as major constituents. Furthermore, the radioactivity has an exclusive affinity for the manganese-bearing minerals, which in these samples contain a substantial amount of barium, even if calcite or iron oxides are present. Where calcite predominates and manganese- and barium-bearing minerals are absent, the radioactivity shows a close association with the iron oxides present, especially hematite, but also shows a moderate association with the calcite and (or) aragonite cementing phases. In other samples composed predominantly of calcite but lacking iron oxides, the radioactivity is preferentially associated with an early stage of calcite development and is considerably lower in the later cementing stages. The radioactivity observed in all these samples is believed to be caused by radium substituting for barium in mineral lattices, filling irregularities in other crystal structures, or adsorbing on the surfaces of precipitated molecules.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82792","usgsCitation":"Bove, D., and Felmlee, J., 1982, Mineralogy and autoradiography of selected mineral-spring precipitates in the Western United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-792, 78 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82792.","productDescription":"78 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141395,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0792/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35565,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0792/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699eab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bove, Dana","contributorId":97104,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bove","given":"Dana","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156972,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Felmlee, J.K.","contributorId":106114,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Felmlee","given":"J.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156973,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Virtually all production from the U.S. OCS emanates from the Gulf of Mexico. In calendar year 1981, for the two primary categories of hydrocarbons produced from the OCS, oil/condensate and gas, Gulf production accounted for over 94 and 99 percent, respectively. Oil production for 1981 was 0.27 billion barrels, and gas production was 4.84 trillion cubic feet. Although most of the shallow-water areas of the Gulf of Mexico Continental Shelf have been explored, considerable amounts of hydrocarbons may yet be discovered in deepwater locations. Industry has been developing the technology to explore deepwater areas, and interest in these portions of the Gulf is increasing.

As of December 1981, the total of all identified oil and gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico OCS increased to 505 from 482 at the end of the previous year; this net increase of 23 fields discovered in 1981 compares to net increases of 50 in 1980, 51 in 1979, and 25 in 1978. The number of active fields increased from 466 in 1981, and fields for which reserve estimates have been made increased from 419 to 445. As of January 1982, 19,736 offshore oil and gas wells had been drilled in the Gulf of Mexico OCS; most of the wells (17,257) are off the coast of Louisiana. Currently, there are 2,027 active oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico; 1,200 of them are producing leases.

The Department of the Interior's 5-year OCS oil and gas leasing schedule projects 2 to 3 Gulf of Mexico lease sales per year through 1987, for a total of 12 offerings, and starting in 1983, the Gulf will be divided into three planning areas. Resource estimates issued for the following Gulf of Mexico lease sales are as follows: Lease Sale 67--75.16 million barrels of oil and 1.03 trillion cubic feet of gas; Lease Sale 69--48.24 million barrels of oil and .785 trillion cubic feet of gas; Lease Sale 72--97 million barrels of oil and 1.04 trillion cubic feet of gas; Lease Sale 74--29 million barrels of oil and .525 trillion cubic feet of gas; and Lease Sale 79--123 million barrels of oil and .157 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Since 1972, oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has declined each year, and gas production, thought to have reached its peak in 1981, is also expected to begin a noticeable decline. To date, most of the oil and gas discovered in the Gulf has occurred on the Texas-Louisiana Shelf, but in the future, oil and gas exploration is likely to include a number of areas where previous leasing has not been extensive. The West Florida Shelf, especially the area off the coast of southwest Florida and the deepwater areas southeast of the Mississippi River Delta, are potential areas for future exploration. As production begins to decline from mature fields, smaller fields will become economically producible, and implementation of secondary and tertiary recovery techniques will make it possible to extract more oil and gas from reservoirs than was possible previously.

Each year, hundreds of miles of pipelines are added to the existing network in the Gulf of Mexico. Recently, there have been a number of proposals for deepwater ports and transshipment terminals as well as projects including the deepening or widening of existing conventional ports. The process of transportation planning in the Gulf of Mexico is done by industry and government through the Intergovernmental Planning Program and its Regional Technical Working Group.

The Gulf Coast region is an area of significant onshore oil and gas activity, with many cities and towns offering a wide range of services and supplies to onshore and offshore oil operators and their ancillary industries. While the western and central Gulf oil and gas support infrastructure is quite extensive and complex, the support facilities in the eastern Gulf are still in the early stages of development. In the likely event of a decline in Gulf OCS production, imported oil may be substituted for dwindling domestic stocks at Gulf Coast refineries. Planners must consider impacts generated by changes in oil and gas productivity and focus on finding alternative uses for facilities and alternative employment for workers.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82242","usgsCitation":"Havran, K.J., Wiese, J., Collins, K.M., and Kurz, F.N., 1982, Gulf of Mexico summary report 3 August 1982: A revision of Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas activities in the Gulf of Mexico and their onshore impacts: Gulf of Mexico summary report 2, August 1981: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-242, Report: ix, 99 p.; 3 Plates: 35.33 x 16.43 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82242.","productDescription":"Report: ix, 99 p.; 3 Plates: 35.33 x 16.43 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":409398,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":409397,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":409396,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140826,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":409395,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas","otherGeospatial":"Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.240234375,\n              26.82407078047018\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.14453125,\n              26.82407078047018\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.14453125,\n              30.14512718337613\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.240234375,\n              30.14512718337613\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.240234375,\n              26.82407078047018\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a1ab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Havran, Kenneth J.","contributorId":40983,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havran","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154784,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wiese, J.D.","contributorId":82303,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiese","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154785,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Collins, Karen M.","contributorId":11216,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Collins","given":"Karen","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154783,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Kurz, Frederick N.","contributorId":47785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kurz","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154782,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The geochemical similarities strongly suggest that they belong to the same family of oils and were derived from similar sources. \r\n\r\nThe oils are relatively high in sulfur (0.89 to 1.23 percent), rich in hydrocarbons (average 82 percent), relatively high in saturated hydrocarbon/aromatic hydrocarbon ratios (average 2.9), and based on analysis of seep oils alone, have a low API gravity (average 19.4?). The oils are for the most part severely biodegraded as attested by the loss of n-paraffin molecules. \r\n\r\nGeochemical comparison of seven crude oils collected in the vicinity of the breccia pipes indicates that the Yates oils are the likely source of the above family of oils. Six barrels of crude oil that were dumped into a potash exploration borehole near Hill C breccia pipe, to release stuck casing, are considered an unlikely source of the breccia pipe and mine seep oils. Volumetric and hydrodynamic constraints make it highly improbable that such a small volume of 'dumped' oil could migrate over distances ranging from about 600 feet to 2.5 miles to the sites of the oil shows.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82421","usgsCitation":"Palacas, J.G., Snyder, R., Baysinger, J., and Threlkeld, C.N., 1982, Geochemical analysis of potash mine seep oils, collapsed breccia pipe oil shows and selected crude oils, Eddy County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-421, 41 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82421.","productDescription":"41 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140499,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0421/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34463,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0421/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae879","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Palacas, J. These areas have little or no petroleum potential. \r\n\r\nAreas of the ECOWAS region that have potential for petroleum production or potential for increased petroleum production include the narrow belt of sedimentary rocks that stretches along the continental margin from Mauritania to Nigeria and the Niger Delta and the Benue depression. The Senegal Basin, located on the continental margin of Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, and Guinea, has been intensely explored by the oil industry and most of the larger structures onshore and on the shelf probably have been tested by drilling with little or no resulting commercial production. Unless basic ideas pertaining to the petroleum geology of the Senegal Basin are revised, future discoveries are expected to be limited to small fields overlooked by industry at a time when petroleum prices were low. On the continental shelf of Sierra Leone and the continental shelf of northeast and central Liberia, the sedimentary rocks are relatively thin, and industry has shown little interest in the area. On the continental rise of these countries, however, the sedimentary section, deposited in a complex fault-block system, increases in thickness. A renewal of industry interest in this deep-water area will probably follow further development of deep-water production technology. A recent oil discovery on the continental slope off the Ivory Coast is expected to spur further exploration offshore of southeastern Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, and Benin. This relatively unexplored area in the Gulf of Guinea has good possibilities .for the discovery of giant oil fields. \r\n\r\nNigeria's oil development from the Niger Delta may have peaked, as 13 of 14 giant oil fields were discovered prior to 1969 and the greatest number of fields were discovered in the period 1965 through 1967. Like delta regions in other parts of the world, individual oil fields of the Niger Delta are small to medium by world standards and future discoveries, therefore, are likely to reflect this reality. The natural gas resources of the Niger Delta, unlike its oil resources, are comparatively underdeveloped. \r\n\r\nParts of the Benue depression in Nigeria and Niger could contain significant deposits of petroleum. The lower Benue depression, immediately north of the Niger Delta, has been extensively explored by drilling. Except for noncommercial discoveries of oil and gas and traces of oil and gas on the ground surface, the results of exploration in the lower Benue depression were negative. However, in the Lake Chad area of Chad and in southern Chad near the Central African Republic boundary, oil and gas discoveries were made just prior to the cessation of all drilling and exploration activity in early 1979. It is rumored that these discoveries may be large although little information is available. The relation between the two areas in Chad and their overall relation to the Benue depression is poorly understood; however, the possibility of thick sedimentary sections containing Cretaceous marine source rock and Tertiary reservoir beds-all contained within grabens in a highly faulted failed-arm system subjected to high heat flow--is attractive. Of the ECOWAS countries, only Nigeria and Niger produce coal commercially. \r\n\r\nNigeria produces subbituminous coal from Paleocene-Maestrichtian and Maestrichtian (Late Cretaceous) age rocks of the Niger Delta region; reserves are estimated, on the basis of extensive drilling, to be 350 million tons (standard coal equivalent). In addition, lignite deposits of the Niger Delta appear to be large but have not been developed. Niger produces small amounts of coal used locally by uranium mine and mill operations from C","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82714","usgsCitation":"Mattick, R., 1982, Assessment of the petroleum, coal, and geothermal resources of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-714, 87 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82714.","productDescription":"87 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139548,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0714/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34306,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0714/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abae4b07f02db671d16","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mattick, R.
