Color, water content and sensitivity of the ash were measured in the field. The ash alternated between reddish brown and dark reddish brown in color and had water contents as high as 392%. A downhole vane shear device measured sensitivities as high as 6.9. A series of laboratory tests including grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, X-ray diffraction analysis, total carbon determination, vane shear, direct shear and triaxial tests were performed to determine the composition and geotechnical properties of the ash. The ash is very fine grained, highly plastic and composed mostly of gibbsite and amorphous material presumably allophane. The ash has a high angle of internal friction ranging from 40-43? and is classified as medium to very sensitive. \r\n\r\nA series of different ash layers was distinguished on the basis of plasticity and other geotechnical properties. Sensitivity may be due to a metastable fabric, cementation, leaching, high organic content, and thixotropy. The sensitivity of the volcanic ash deposits near Hilo is consistent with documented slope instability during earthquakes in Hawaii. The high angles of internal friction and cementation permit very steep slopes under static conditions. However, because of high sensitivity of the ash, these slopes are particularly susceptible to seismically-induced landsliding.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82279","usgsCitation":"Wieczorek, G.F., Jibson, R., Wilson, R.C., and Buchanan-Banks, J., 1982, Geotechnical properties of ash deposits near Hilo, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-279, 20 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82279.","productDescription":"20 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140189,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0279/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34603,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0279/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b085","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wieczorek, G. It underlies most of the study area and is the most extensive source of ground water in the area. Individual sandstone beds are from less than 10 to more than 150 feet thick. The cumulative thickness of sandstone is more than 200 feet throughout much of the area. The aquifer is confined by overlying Cretaceous limestone and shale, Quaternary glacial deposits and loess. The underlying confining material is shale of the Dakota Formation, undifferentiated Paleozoic age rocks, or Precambrian crystalline rock.</p><p>Water flows through the aquifer from the north-central part of the study area to the east, south and southwest. Recharge is dominantly by infiltration from the land surface through the confining materials. Discharge is to underlying Paleozoic aquifers and to the alluvium and glacial outwash deposits along the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers in the southwest part of the area. Flow components toward bedrock valleys may reflect discharge to Quaternary sand and gravel deposits in these valleys.</p><p>Pumping tests conducted in the study area indicate a narrow range of hydraulic conductivities of the Dakota aquifer, from 37 to 50 feet per day. Consequently, an average hydraulic conductivity of 40 feet per day was used to estimate the potential yield to wells completed in the aquifer. Yields of more than 250 gallons per minute can be expected throughout much of the study area and more than 1000 gallons per minute could be produced in some areas.</p><p>The quality of water from the Dakota is a calcium, magnesium, sulfate type. It is generally suitable for irrigation purposes, based on comparisons of sodium adsorption ratios and electrical conductivities. In some areas the aquifer has water with high salinity hazard that may restrict its use to irrigation of only well drained types of soil. The concentration of radium226 and other radionuclides exceed recommended limits at several sites.</p><p>The quality of water pumped from the aquifer may be altered by induced leakage from the underlying aquifers in Paleozoic age rocks if withdrawals reverse the pattern of natural flow from the Dakota into the Paleozoic aquifers. Evidence for such a reversal exists in the area around the city of LeMars.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82264","collaboration":"Prepared in A hydrologic study has been conducted in the potential lease area to describe existing hydrologic systems and to assess potential impacts of surface coal mining on local water resources. Hydrogeologic data collected from wells, springs, and drill holes indicate that shallow aquifers exist within the Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene age) and within valley alluvium (Pleistocene and Holocene age). Shallow aquifers within the Tonge River Member include coal beds, clinker, and lenses of sandstone and siltstone. The Knobloch coal bed, a principal shallow aquifer used for livestock watering in the area, averages about 55 feet in thickness and is completely saturated throughout most of its extent. Coarse alluvial deposits are the most productive aquifers and are a major source of stock water in the Cook Creek basin. Surface-water resources are limited to the upstream reach part of Cook Creek, which flows intermittently. The downstream reach part of Cook Creek, plus all other small drainages that originate in the study area, are ephemeral. Mining of the Knoblock and Sawyer coal beds would remove two alluvial springs, one bedrock spring, and two wells, which are all used for watering of livestock. The potentiometric surface within the Knobloch coal aquifer and the alluvial aquifer in the downstream part of the Cook Creek basin would be lowered during mining. Lowered water levels in these aquifers might substantially affect water levels in five wells outside the mine boundary. After mining, the alluvial aquifer downgradient from the mine area might show a long-term degradation in water quality as a result of leaching of soluble salts from overburden materials used to backfill mine pits. Although mining would alter the existing hydrologic systems and remove several springs and shallow wells, alternative ground-water supplies are available that could be developed to replace those lost by mining. It was erupted 19 m.y. ago, shortly after the changeover from intermediate-composition calc-alkalic volcanism to bimodal basalt-rhyolite volcanism. Eruption of the tuff resulted in the formation of the Mount Belknap Caldera whose pyroclastic intracaldera stratigraphy parallels that in the outflow facies. The Joe Loft Tuff Member is a composite ash-flow sheet that changes laterally from a simple cooling unit near the source to four distinct cooling units toward the distal end. The lowest of these units is the largest and most widespread; it is 64 m thick and contains a basal vitrophyre. Eruption of the lower unit led to the initial collapse of the caldera. The lower unit is followed upward by a 43 m middle unit, a 26 m pink-colored unit which is separated by a prominent air- fall layer, and a 31 m upper unit. \r\n\r\nThe Joe Loft Tuff Member is an alkali rhyolite with 75.85-77.31 wt. % silica and 8.06-9.32 wt. % K2O+Na2O; the agpaitic index (Na2O+ K2O/Al2O3) is .77-.98. The tuff contains about I% phenocrysts of quartz, sanidine, oligoclase, augite, apatite, zircon, sphene, biotite, and oxidized Fe-Ti oxides. The basal vitrophyre contains accessory allanite, chevkinite, and magnesiohastingsite. The main cooling units are chemically and mineralogically zoned indicating that the magma chamber restratified prior to each major eruption. Within each of the two thickest cooling units, the mineralogy changes systematically upwards; the Or content and relative volume of sanidine decreases and An content of plagioclase increases. The basal vitrophyre of the lower unit has a bulk composition that lies in the thermal trough near the minima of Or-Ab-Q at 1 kb PH2O. Microprobe analyses of feldspar and chemical modeling on experimental systems indicate that pre-eruption temperatures were near 750?C and that the temperature increased during the eruption of the cooling units. \r\n\r\nThe chemical gradients in the apatite and whole-rock data in the Joe Loft Tuff Member and the consistent mineral assemblages throughout the ash-flow cannot be explained by crystal settling. The fractionation of the Joe Lott Tuff Member appears to closer fit the model of convection-driven thermogravitational diffusion.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82891","usgsCitation":"Budding, K.E., 1982, Eruptive history, petrology, and petrogenesis of the Joe Lott Tuff Member of the Mount Belknap Volcanics, Marysvale volcanic field, west-central Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-891, 80 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82891.","productDescription":"80 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":108443,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13849.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"13849"},{"id":141340,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0891/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35694,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0891/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35695,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0891/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fe0b7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Budding, Karin E.","contributorId":32164,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Budding","given":"Karin","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

One of the hotel 's supply wells delivers water to a reverse-osmosis treatment plant that produces the area 's potable water supply. Should water with increased dissolved solids reach the supply well, the costs of production of potable water will increase. The reverse-osmosis plant supply well is located about 0.4 mile south of one of the wells where increases have been monitored, and 0.8 mile southwest of the well where the most significant increases have been monitored. The direction of local ground-water movement is eastward, which reduces the probability of the supply well being affected. Honey mesquite, a phreatophyte located about 1.5 miles downgradient from the well where the most significant increases have been monitored, might be adversely affected should water with increased dissolved solids extend that far. Available data and data collected during this investigation do not indicate the source of the dissolved-solids increases. Continued ground-water-quality monitoring of existing wells and the installation of additional wells for water-quality monitoring would be necessary before the area affected by the increases, and the source and direction of movement of the water with increased dissolved solids, can be determined. Geologic hazards identified in the study area for which stipulations are recommended are active faults, mass transport, steep slopes (>10?), and steep-walled submarine canyons. Geologic hazards whose effects can be mitigated through existing technology and design and are not considered cause for stipulation are shallow faults, buried and filled channels, shallow gas, gas-charged sediments, hydrocarbon seeps, and unstable fan deposits. The Minerals Management Service has recommended that a stipulation be applied to 83 tracts where there is evidence of existing or potential sea-floor instability over a significant portion of the tract. Further data acquisition and analysis on a more detail-ed grid will be required of lessees or operators before drilling will be permitted on leases issued as a result of the sale.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8233","usgsCitation":"Burdick, D.J., and Richmond, W.C., 1982, A summary of geologic hazards for proposed OCS oil and gas lease sale 68, southern California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-33, 41 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8233.","productDescription":"41 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140609,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35704,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35705,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35706,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35707,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35708,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35709,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35710,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35711,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35712,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35713,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35714,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35715,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a60b5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burdick, Deborah J.","contributorId":57455,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burdick","given":"Deborah","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Richmond, William C.","contributorId":85585,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richmond","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
