The distinguishing features are structural and textural and result from different degrees of deformation. Most Paleozoic rocks are strongly deformed and thoroughly recrystallized. Phenocrysts in meta volcanic rocks are granulated and drawn out into lenses that have sutured outlines. In contrast, the phenocrysts in the Mesozoic metavolcanic rocks show well-preserved straight crystal faces, are only slightly or not at all granulated, and contain fewer mineral inclusions than do those in the Paleozoic rocks. The groundmass in the Paleozoic rocks is recrystallized to a fairly coarse grained albite-epidote-amphibole-chlorite rock, whereas in the Mesozoic rocks the groundmass is a very fine grained feltlike mesh with only spotty occurrence of well-recrystallized finegrained albite-epidote-chlorite-actinolite rock. Primary minerals, such as augite, are locally preserved in the Mesozoic rocks but are altered to a mixture of amphibole, chlorite, and epidote in the Paleozoic rocks. In the contact aureoles of the plutons, and within the Big Bend fault zone, which crosses the area parallel to the structural trends, all rocks are thoroughly recrystallized and strongly deformed. Identification of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks in these parts of the area was based on the continuity of the rock units in the field and on gradual changes in microscopic textures toward the plutons.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included in this report. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

A water-budget evaluation for pre-channelized conditions showed that runoff accounts for about 17 percent of the total rainfall, base runoff about 20 percent, ground-water outflow about 2 percent, and evapotranspiration about 61 percent. Channelization would have caused the greatest decline in ground-water levels nearest the stream, with the decline diminishing with increased distance from the stream. Channelization would also have resulted in a decrease in overland runoff and an increase in the amount of water reaching Creeping Swamp through the ground-water system, although the total volume of runoff would not change significantly. Constructional and operational techniques influence the simulation almost as much as model design does. Usefulness and accuracy of the model depend on (1) inherent and practical limitations of the finite-difference method, (2) accuracy and completeness of the data base, and (3) accuracy of the assumptions and approximations that were made in applying the simulation technique to this particular ground-water reservoir. Reliable data used in design of the model are (1) horizontal hydraulic conductivity and thickness of three major aquifers, (2) extent of confining beds, (3) specific yield, and (4) locations of streams. Estimates of vertical hydraulic conductivity and specific storage were applied to the model. Most spatially fixed model boundaries are good representations of prototype (real-world) boundaries. Most dynamic boundaries are only approximately represented, and some dynamic boundaries require application of unproved assumptions. Low-flow frequency data for 161 continuous-record gaging stations having eight or more complete years of record are presented for 1-, 7-, 14-, 30-, 60-, 90-, 120-, 183-, and 365-day low flows for frequencies ranging from once in 2 years to once in 100 years. In addition, 8,146 low-flow measurements at 1,515 sites are given. Included are measurements at 623 partial-record stations where correlations with nearby continuous-record gaging stations eventually will be completed, and at 892 miscellaneous-measurement sites where only a few measurements were made.

Examples are given for determining low-flow characteristics at partial-record stations and miscellaneous-measurement sites. Where the number of measurements are adequate to develop a relation line, they alone are related to concurrent daily flows at a continuous-record gaging station. Where the number of measurements are too few to define a relation with flows at nearby gaging stations, an equal-yield line can be helpful for estimating a relation line. The relation line may be used to transfer low-flow characteristics from a continuous-record gaging station to a site where only discharge measurements are available .

Specific conductance of streams, where available, is listed with the discharge measurements at partial-record stations and miscellaneous-measurement sites. Observed conductivity values range from less than 50 micromhos per centimeter at 25° Celsius in the northeast to greater than 1,000 for parts of west-central Minnesota.

flooding, diversion of drainage, decline in water level, land subsidence, and the degradation of water quality. The degradation of water quality is the most serious and widespread coal-mine related problem in Alabama. The chemical quality of water in numerous streams draining coal-mine areas has been altered drastically. The pH of water draining from mined areas commonly ranges from 2.1 to 5.0, generally has high sulfate and dissolved solids concentrations, is hard to very hard, and may contain objectionable amounts of iron. The detrimental quality of water in some streams may persist for decades after mining has ceased. Without proper safeguards, additional mining may cause a significant deterioration in the quality of water in major streams where the more mineralized mine waters are now diluted. It is a generalization of several hydrogeologic factors and provides a guideline for ground-water exploration, which is useful in water- and land-use planning. It does not describe the absolute quantity or quality of ground water available. The best aquifers in the basin are deposits of stratified sand or sand and gravel of Pleistocene age. Large aquifers of this type occur in places in the Merrimack River valley and in valleys of tributaries to the Merrimack River. Ground water is generally of good chemical quality. Iron and manganese in concentrations greater than the recommended limits for drinking water suggested by the U.S. Public Health Service, however, are not uncommon. Hydrologic characteristics of the Koehn Lake area were investigated to determine the effects of external stresses on the system. Unconsolidated deposits are more than 900 feet thick in the central part of the basin. Cantil Valley fault, in the central part of the basin, acts as a barrier to the flow of ground water.

Average annual recharge to aquifers from percolation of surface water and from underflow, between 1958 and 1976, was 10,200 acre-feet. Average annual consumptive use, between 1960 and 1976, was 32,000 acre-feet, 21,800 acre-feet more than the recharge, implying that average annual withdrawal from storage is about 22,000 acre-feet. Storage depletion in 1976 was 50,000 acre-feet, considerably higher than the average. The cumulative storage depletion has caused a decline in water levels and a pumping depression about 5 miles southwest of Koehn Lake.

Ground water in storage in 1976 was about 4 million acre-feet, and ground water in storage above the 500-foot depth excluding the saline water under Koehn Lake was about 2 million acre-feet.

Water samples were collected from 24 wells for chemical analysis. Comparison of analyses made during this study with historical water-quality analyses indicated no significant change. A recent reversal in ground-water gradient southwest of Koehn Lake may allow the saline water below Koehn Lake to invade the fresh-water aquifer.

It is a generalization of several hydrogeologic factors and provides a guide for ground-water exploration, which is useful in water- and land-use planning. The best aquifers in the basin are deposits of stratified sand or sand and gravel of Pleistocene age. Large aquifers of this type occur in places in the major river valleys and in interstream areas within the coastal plain. Ground water is generally of good chemical quality. Iron and manganese in concentrations greater than the recommended limits for drinking water suggested by the U.S. Public Health Service, however, are not uncommon.
