A preliminary digital model was developed for the Arikaree aquifer using a small amount of poorly distributed data, an estimated distribution of recharge, and a conceptual model of the Arikaree aquifer flow system. Calibration of the model was based on reproduction of the potentiometric surface and the base flow of the Sweetwater River in November 1975. Calculated steady-state hydraulic heads were within 50 feet of the observed heads in about 98 percent of the nodes. The calculated leakage from the Arikaree aquifer to he Sweetwater River in the western area was within about 12 percent of the leadage determined by gain and loss studies. In order to develop a comprehensive digital model that would respond to hydraulic stress in nearly the same manner as the actual aquifer flow system, measured responses of the aquifer to stress are needed. Also needed are additional data on aquifer characteristics, recharge to the aquifer, and stream-aquifer relationships. These flood discharges were related to drainage area, percent imperviousness of the drainage basin, and rainfall occuring over 120-minute periods. The defined relation is Q=m3A*777A - .02 tI,,,,P + 1j-227 (1120).539(t120).40 where Q is flood discharge in cfs, A is drainage area in square miles, IMP is percent imperviousness in the basin, and I120 is rainfall in inches, over 120 minute time period. The defined relation was used to synthesize sets of annual flood peaks for drainage basins ranging from .05 square miles to 10 square miles and imperviousness ranging from 0 to 80 percent for the period of rainfall record at Memphis. From these series of flood peaks, frequency relations were defined and presented for 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 year recurrent intervals.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division,","doi":"10.3133/wri77132","usgsCitation":"Boning, C.W., 1977, Preliminary evaluation of flood frequency relations in the urban areas of Memphis, Tennessee: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 77-132, vi, 50 p. :ill., map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri77132.","productDescription":"vi, 50 p. :ill., map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1968,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri770132/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":157676,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c426","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boning, Charles W.","contributorId":86345,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boning","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196066,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The area is referred to in the Contract as Yampa No. 3, which includes the Bureau of Land Management's (ELM) tracts WF-10, WF-12, WF-16, and WF-17. The purpose of the drilling was to obtain information on the quality and extent of the coal in the area. All holes were logged using either Gamma-Gamma (density), Natural Gamma, Caliper, Resistivity, or spontaneous-potential (SP) geophysical logs. The logging was done by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Birdwell Division of Seismograph Service Corp., Century Geophysical, and Geodynamics, Inc. The water level is indicated in table 1 for each drill hole at the time the hole was logged. All holes were drilled on private surface, and surface ownership is shown in table 1.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77155","usgsCitation":"Prost, G., Streamflow in the drainages tributary to Lake Mead is meager and extremely variable. Ground water is derived from two principal sources: (1) infiltration into permeable rocks near Lake Mead and (2) ground-water underflow in the basins that drain to the lake.

The volume of ground water derived from Lake Mead is much greater than that derived from the basins. In terms of potential groundwater development the rocks saturated by lake water probably extend less than 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from the lake, whereas the basins that contribute underflow to the lake are of much larger areal extent. The most favorable sites for ground-water development are Grapevine Mesa, Sandy Point, Hualapai Wash, and the area near and south of Temple Bar; the permeable rocks include the conglomerate facies of the Muddy Creek Formation, the older alluvium, and the Chemehuevi Formation. The least favorable areas for ground-water development are those underlain by the mudstone facies of the Muddy Creek Formation. Seven sites are recommended for future ground-water development. Five sites are within 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) of Lake Mead and two sites are between 3 and 5 miles (5 and 8 kilometers) from the lake.

The ground water contains less than 1, 500 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids in most of the area. Ground water on Grapevine Mesa contains less than 500 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, and that from springs in the metamorphic and plutonic rocks contains more than 1, 500 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79688","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park Service","usgsCitation":"Laney, R., 1977, Geohydrologic reconnaissance of Lake Mead National Recreation Area; Temple Bar to Grand Wash Cliffs, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-688, vii, 72 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79688.","productDescription":"vii, 72 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413746,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0688/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142378,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0688/report.JPG"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Lake Mead National Recreation Area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.78404427603162,\n              36.13330894485139\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.78404427603162,\n              35.99793545482548\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.06886338011763,\n              35.99793545482548\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.06886338011763,\n              36.13330894485139\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.78404427603162,\n              36.13330894485139\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8e54","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Laney, R. A review of duck hunting regulations, activity, and success, with special reference to the mallard","docAbstract":"
This, the fourth in a series of reports on the mallard, (Anas platyrhynchos), deals at length with the harvest of mallards by waterfowl hunters. Long-term summaries of duck hunting regulations (1948- 1974), Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp sales (1934-1974), Hunter Questionnaire (1952-1974), Duck Wing Collection (1960-1974), and Hunter Performance (1965-1972) Survey data for the United States are presented and discussed. Similar data from Canada are also summarized. Mallard harvest figures for 1961-1974 are presented by Mallard Harvest Area, of which 100 are defined for the United States and 14 for Canada, as well as by State or Province and flyway.

During the 23-year period beginning in 1952, an average of 1.6 million adult and 0.2 million junior waterfowl hunters accumulated almost 12.3 million hunter-days of recreation and a harvest of 11.2 million ducks each year. Hunter reports indicate that mallards made up about 43% (5.5 million annually) of the ducks taken before 1960, when mallard regulations were less restrictive; the Duck Wing Survey indicates that mallards have made up 33% of the harvest (3.6 million annually) since 1960. The age and sex compositions and the chronological distribution of the mallard harvest are examined in detail. Among the patterns noted are peak harvests during the first few days of the season in many States, alternately increasing and decreasing annual age ratios, and sex ratios that suggest differential migration of adult drakes and hunter selectivity for males. It is estimated that almost 19% of the ducks shot down are not retrieved.

Relationships between duck hunting regulations and hunter behavior are examined briefly. Hunter compliance with mallard bag limits, hunter selectivity of mallards by sex, and, to a lesser extent, the size of the unretrieved kill are all sensitive to the particular bag limit regulations in effect. Survey data are also examined for relationships between harvest and various hunting regulations: starting time and day of the week for opening day, opening date, season length, split seasons, daily shooting hours, and daily bag limits. Tables are presented relating changes in duck and mallard harvests to season length and bag limit, and examples of what effects changes in other regulations have on harvest are also given.

The evaluation of bag limit regulations, one of the most important tools used in managing harvest, is carried a step further with the development of a procedure for calculating expected hunter success under a wide variety of bag limit regulations. This method appears promising for evaluating point-limit as well as fixed-limit regulations. In addition, it may provide useful measurements of the degree of hunter selectivity induced by various types of bag limit regulations, an increasingly important aspect of harvest management. Finally, this study clearly demonstrates that the effects of a particular regulation can differ dramatically from area to area, so it is usually necessary to evaluate each proposal on a State-by-State basis.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Martin, E.M., and Carney, S.M., 1977, Population ecology of the mallard: IV. Water levels have declined about 200 feet below levels of the early 1900 's at Tupelo and West Point and it is estimated that the aquifer is developed to near its potential yield at those places. The aquifer is used extensively in areas where the dissolved-solids concentration of the water is more than 500 mg/liter and in some places where the concentration exceeds 1,000 mg/liter. The most common water-quality problems are excessive chloride and fluoride. Their major objectives were: (1) to sample very ancient lunar material such as might be found in pre-Imbrian highlands as distant as possible from the Imbrium basin, and (2) to sample pyroclastic materials that had been interpreted as significantly younger than the mare basalts returned from previous Apollo landing sites. The crew worked approximately 22 hours on the lunar surface; they traversed about 30 km, collected nearly 120 kg of samples, took more than 2,200 photographs, and recorded many direct geologic observations. The lunar surface data, sample results, and geologic interpretation of orbital photographs are the bases for this geologic synthesis.

The Taurus-Littrow massifs are interpreted as the upper part of thick faulted ejecta deposited on the rim of the transient cavity of the large southern Serenitatis basin, which was formed by a meteor impact about 3.9 to 4.0 b.y. ago. The target rocks, predominantly of the dunite-anorthosite-norite-troctolite suite or its metamorphosed equivalents, were fractured, sheared, crushed, and melted by the impact. The resulting mixture of crushed rock and melt was transported up and out of the transient cavity and deposited on and beyond its rim. Hot fragmental to partly molten ejecta and relatively cool cataclasite and relict target rocks were intermixed in a melange of lenses, pods, and veins. Crystallization of melts and thermal metamorphism of fine-grained fragmental debris produced breccia composed of lithic and mineral fragments in a fine-grained, coherent, crystalline matrix. Such breccia dominates the massif samples.

Faults that bound the massifs were activated during formation of the basin, so that structural relief of several kilometers, due to high-angle faulting, was imposed on the ejecta almost as soon as it was deposited. Massive slumping, that produced thick wedges of colluvium on the lower massif slopes, probably occurred nearly contemporaneously with the faulting. Sculptured Hills material, perhaps largely cataclasite excavated from the southern Serenitatis basin by the same impact, was then deposited on and around the faulted ejecta of the massifs.

Subfloor basalt, estimated to be about 1,400 m thick in the landing site, flooded the Taurus-Littrow graben prior to approximately 3.7 b. y. ago. The basalt is part of a more extensive unit that was broadly warped and cut by extensional faults before the accumulation in Mare Serenitatis of younger, less deformed basalts that overlap it. A thin volcanic ash unit, probably about 3.5 b. y. old, mantled the subfloor basalt and the nearby highlands. It, too, was subsequently overlapped by the younger basalts of Mare Serenitatis.

In the time since deposition of the volcanic ash, continued bombardment by meteors and secondary projectiles has produced regolith, a mechanical mixture of debris derived mainly from the subfloor basalt, the volcanic ash, and the rocks of the nearby massifs and Sculptured Hills. The regolith, in combination with the underlying volcanic ash, forms an unconsolidated surficial deposit with an average thickness of about 14 m, sufficiently thick to permit abnormally rapid degradation of the smaller craters, especially those less than 200 m in diameter, so as to create a surface that seems less cratered than do other mare surfaces. Admixture of volcanic ash gives the surface a distinctive dark color, which, in combination with the less cratered appearance, led to the pre-mission interpretation of a young dark mantling unit.

The uppermost part of the regolith in the landing area is basalt rich ejecta from the clustered craters of the valley floor. Most of the craters are interpreted as part of a secondary cluster formed by projectiles of ejecta from Tycho. When they struck the face of the South Massif, the projectiles mobilized fine-grained regolith material that was redeposited on the valley floor as the light mantle. Exposure ages suggest that the swarm of secondary projectiles struck the Taurus-Littrow area about 100 m.y. ago.

The Lee-Lincoln fault scarp is part of an extensive system of wrinkle ridges and scarps that transect both mare and highlands rocks. The scarp cuts the crater Lara, but the major part of the displacement occurred before deposition of the light mantle. Minor post-light mantle displacement is shown by small extensional faults that cut its surface west of the Lee-Lincoln scarp.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77783","usgsCitation":"Wolfe, E.W., Bailey, N.G., Lucchitta, B., Muehlberger, W., Scott, D.H., Sutton, R.L., and Wilshire, H.G., 1977, The geological investigation of the Taurus-Littrow Valley: Apollo 17 landing site (Superceded by P-1080): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-783, Report: 87 p.; 1 Figure: 44.91 x 28.21 inches; 9 Plates: 42.00 x 53.25 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77783.","productDescription":"Report: 87 p.; 1 Figure: 44.91 x 28.21 inches; 9 Plates: 42.00 x 53.25 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431503,"rank":12,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/figure-7.pdf","text":"Figure 7","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431502,"rank":11,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-8.pdf","text":"Plate 8","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431501,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-7.pdf","text":"Plate 7","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431500,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-6.pdf","text":"Plate 6","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431499,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-5.pdf","text":"Plate 5","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431498,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-4.pdf","text":"Plate 4","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431497,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-3.pdf","text":"Plate 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431496,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-2A.pdf","text":"Plate 2-A","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431495,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-2.pdf","text":"Plate 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431494,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431493,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142281,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0783/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"250000","otherGeospatial":"Taurus-Littrow Valley","edition":"Superceded by P-1080","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b01e4b07f02db6988a0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolfe, Edward W.","contributorId":79878,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolfe","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154604,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bailey, N.
