Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This trend is equivalent to an annual change in hydrogen-ion concentration of 0.2 microequivalents per liter. \r\n\r\nAn average annual increase in precipitation quantity of 2 to 3 percent since 1965 has resulted in an increased acid load in the western and central parts of the State. \r\n\r\nDuring 1965-78, sulfate concentration in precipitation decreased an average of 1-4 percent annually. In general, no trend in nitrate was detected. Calculated trends in hydrogen-ion concentration do not correlate with measured trends of sulfate and nitrate, which suggests variable neutralization of hydrogen ion, possibly by particles from dry deposition. Neutralization has produced an increase of about 0.3 pH units in nonurban areas and 0.7 pH units in urban areas. \r\n\r\nStatistical analyses of chemical data from several streams throughout New York suggest that sulfate concentrations decreased an average of 1 to 4 percent per year. This decrease is comparable to the sulfate decrease in precipitation during the same period. In most areas of the State, chemical contributions from urbanization and farming, as well as the neutralizing effect of carbonate soils, conceal whatever effects acid precipitation may have on pH of streams.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey ;\r\nFor sale by Distributions Branch, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2188","usgsCitation":"Peters, N.E., Schroeder, R.A., and Troutman, D.E., 1982, Temporal trends in the acidity of precipitation and surface waters of New York (Reprinted with corrections): U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2188, iv, 35 p. :ill., 1 map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2188.","productDescription":"iv, 35 p. :ill., 1 map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138715,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2188/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28583,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2188/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"edition":"Reprinted with corrections","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4de4b07f02db627116","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peters, Norman E. nepeters@usgs.gov","contributorId":1324,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peters","given":"Norman","email":"nepeters@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":316,"text":"Georgia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":145274,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schroeder, Roy A. raschroe@usgs.gov","contributorId":1523,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schroeder","given":"Roy","email":"raschroe@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":145275,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Troutman, David E.","contributorId":50133,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Troutman","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145276,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

One such aquifer is formed by the Ogallala Formation of Miocene age which covers most of the western part of the area. Because saturated thickness of the aquifer decrease northeastward, maximum yields to irrigation wells decrease in that direction from 2,000 to 500 gallons per minute. The Grand Island Formation of Pleistocene age occurs in an ancestral channel of the Republican River in northeast Jewell and northwest Republic counties. The maximum yield to wells from this aquifer was estimated to be 2,000 gallons per minute. Quaternary alluvium of Pleistocene and Holocene age occurs in most major stream valleys. The aquifer in the Republican River valley yields as much as 2,000 gallons per minute to irrigation wells. Water levels in the Ogallala Formation commonly declined from 5 to 40 feet during 1950-77 as a result of irrigation withdrawals. Recharge from irrigation by stream diversions have raised water levels as much as 25 feet in the Grand Island Formation and as much as 15 feet in the Quaternary alluvium of the Prairie Dog Creek valley. Geohydrologic data are compiled on six maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together, the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a major valley-fill aquifer in southeastern Steuben County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, aquifer thickness, potentiometric-surface elevations, and land use. The valley-fill deposits consist of alluvial silt, sand, and gravel, glacial-outwash (sand and gravel), till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel beds have relatively high permeabilities, whereas the till and silt deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel along the valley margin. Artesian conditions are found locally in sand and gravel confined under silt and clay in the middle of the valley. Recharge occurs nearly everywhere on the valley floor, but principally along the margin of the valley, where highly permeable land surface conditions exist, and runoff from the hillsides is concentrated. The Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water-level measurements were made on approximately 1,000 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown mostly by 5-foot contour intervals. In the Fernandina Beach area a 40-foot interval is used to show a deep cone of depression. The potentiometric surface ranged from 131 feet above NGVD (National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929) in Polk County to 68 feet below NGVD in Nassau County. Water levels continued to recover from record low levels set in September 1981. Except in a few places, water levels throughout the District rose above September 1981 levels. September 1982 levels were as much as 10 feet and commonly 2 to 3 feet higher than the below normal September 1981 levels.
