This report presents a summary of hydrologic data and an evaluation of areas where additional hydrologic data are needed to provide a data base suitable for use in making decisions regarding future water development.

The largest and most dependable surface-water supplies that can be obtained without storage from tributary streams, as indicated by the 30-day low flow with recurrence interval of 10 years, potentially are available from the lower Grand River (15 to 30 million gallons per day) and the Nodaway and Chariton Rivers (5 to 10 million gallons per day). Flow of the Missouri River is greater than 1,300 million gallons per day at all points in Missouri. Surface water is primarily a calcium bicarbonate
type with dissolved-solids concentration less than 400 milligrams per liter.

Sources of water in surficial deposits are the Missouri River alluvium (well yields as much as 2,000 gallons per minute), glacial drift (well yields of 30 to 500 gallons per minute), and alluvium of tributary streams (well yields exceed 50 gallons per minute in large basins). The Pennsylvanian bedrock yields only a few gallons per minute to wells. The Cambrian and Ordovician formations are not evaluated because data are few, and there are no water wells open to these units. Water from the alluvium is a hard, calcium bicarbonate type that commonly has relatively large iron concentrations and typically has dissolved-solids concentrations of less than 500 milligrams per liter. Water from the glacial-drift and bedrock generally is a mixed calcium bicarbonate sodium sulfate type, is hard, has relatively large iron concentrations, and some of it is classified as saline.

Areas where additional hydrologic data are needed to provide a data base suitable for use in making decisions regarding future water development include the lower Grand and Thompson River basins, the Missouri River alluvial aquifer, the Nodaway-Tarkio-One Hundred and Two River basins, the Chariton River basin, and the 19 counties where surface-mineable coal reserves make coal-related industrial expansion possible.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8227","usgsCitation":"Skelton, J., Harvey, E.J., and Miller, D.E., 1982, Water information for northwestern Missouri: A planning document: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-27, iii, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8227.","productDescription":"iii, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160066,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0027/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":349815,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0027/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Missouri","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.7843017578125,\n              40.588928169693745\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.68017578125,\n              39.0533181067413\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.99951171875,\n              38.56964280859044\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.30712890625,\n              40.59727063442024\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.7843017578125,\n              40.588928169693745\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa1b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Skelton, John","contributorId":70392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Skelton","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202044,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Harvey, Edward Joseph","contributorId":32131,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harvey","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"Joseph","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202043,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Miller, Don E.","contributorId":29485,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Don","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202042,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This report describes the evidence of this activity preserved in deposits on the west and east flanks of the volcano. \r\n\r\nOn the west side of Glacier Peak the oldest postglacial deposit is a large, clayey mudflow which traveled at least 35 km down the White Chuck River valley sometime after 14,000 years ago. Subsequent large explosive eruptions produced lahars and at least 10 pyroclastic-flow deposits, including a semiwelded vitric tuff in the White Chuck River valley. These deposits, known collectively as the White Chuck assemblage, form a valley fill which is locally preserved as far as 100 km downstream from the volcano in the Stillaguamish River valley. At least some of the assemblage is about 11,670-11,500 radiocarbon years old. \r\n\r\nA small clayey lahar, containing reworked blocks of the vitric tuff, subsequently traveled at least 15 km down the White Chuck River. This lahar is overlain by lake sediments containing charred wood which is about 5,500 years old. A 150-m-thick assemblage of pyroclastic-flow deposits and lahars, called the Kennedy Creek assemblage, is in part about 5,500-5,100 radiocarbon years old. Lithic lahars from this assemblage extend at least 100 km downstream in the Skagit River drainage. The younger lahar assemblages, each containing at least three lahars and reaching at least 18 km downstream from Glacier Peak in the White Chuck River valley, are about 2,800 and 1,800 years old, respectively. These are postdated by a lahar containing abundant oxyhornblende dacite, which extends at least 30 km to the Sauk River. A still younger lahar assemblage that contains at least five lahars, and that also extends at least 30 km to the Sauk River, is older than a mature forest growing on its surface. \r\n\r\nAt least one lahar and a flood deposit form a low terrace at the confluence of the White Chuck and Sauk Rivers, and were deposited before 300 years ago, but more recently than about 1,800 years ago. Several small outburst floods, including one in 1975, have affected Kennedy and Baekos Creek and the upper White Chuck River in the last hundred years. \r\n\r\nEast of Glacier Peak the oldest postglacial deposits consist of ash-cloud deposits that underlie tephra erupted by Glacier Peak between 12,750 and 11,250 radiocarbon years ago. Although pyroclastic-flow deposits correlative with the ash-cloud deposits have not been recognized, late Pleistocene pumiceous lahars extend at least 50 km downstream in the Suiattle River valley. A younger clayey mudflow extends at least 6 km down Dusty Creek. This lahar is overlain by deposits of lithic pyroclastic flows and lahars that form the Dusty assemblage. This assemblage is at least 300 m thick in the upper valleys of Dusty and Chocolate Creeks, and contains more than 10 km3 of lithic debris. Lahars derived from the Dusty assemblage extend at least 100 km down the Skagit River valley from Glacier Peak. This assemblage is younger than tephra layer 0 from Mount Mazama, and older than tephra layer Yn from Mount St. Helens, and thus was formed between about 7,000 and 3,400 years ago. The Dusty assemblage may have been formed at the same time as the Kennedy Creek assemblage. \r\n\r\nA 100-m-thick assemblage of pyroclastic flows and lahars preserved in the Chocolate Creek valley is about 1,800 radiocarbon years old. A clayey lahar in the upper Chocolate Creek valley extended at least 2 km downvalley after 1,800 years ago, but before pyroclastic flows and lahars were deposited in upper Chocolate Creek 1,100 radiocarbon years ago. Several clayey lahars in the Dusty Creek valley east of Glacier Peak are also about 1,100 years old. A lahar in the valley of Dusty Creek, which contains rare prismatically jointed blocks of vesiculated dacite, and a white ash that is locally as much as 50 cm thick may be the products of small","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82830","usgsCitation":"Beget, J.E., 1982, Postglacial volcanic deposits at Glacier Peak, Washington, and potential hazards from future eruptions; a preliminary report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-830, 81 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82830.","productDescription":"81 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141454,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0830/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35373,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0830/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683aa9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Beget, J. A large part of Redwood National Park is located in the downstream part of this actively eroding drainage basin. The bedrock consists primarily of Mesozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The structurally complex Franciscan assemblage of rocks underlies most of the basin, but rocks of the Klammath Mountain tectonic province occurs in a small eastern part of the basin. Most major boundaries between Mesozoic rock units are north-northwest trending faults parallel to the regional structural trend. Extensive areas of surficial coastal plain sediments, landslide deposits, stream terrace deposits and modern alluvium are also present; these areas help identify loci of vigorous recent erosion. The California Department of Transportation is planning to replace or widen the three bridges. This report evaluates flow characteristics of the existing and proposed crossings. The distribution of flow across the floodplain and water-surface elevation of Honcut Creek at the site are affected by levees, a natural channel constriction, agricultural improvements on the floodplain, and high water levels on the Feather River.
\n
The average recurrence interval for overbank flow is less than 2 years, and for flows equal to the flood of January 12, 1980 (discharge, 10,100 cubic feet per second), is about 2. 5 years. A flood with an average recurrence interval of 50 years would discharge about 19,000 cubic feet per second. Flooding caused by high stages on the Feather River has occurred seven times during the period 1964-80.
\n
For flows exceeding 20,000 cubic feet per second on Honcut Creek, and assuming present bridge conditions, backwater at the approach section about 400 feet upstream from the bridge is about 0.4 foot. If bridge l (left bank bridge) is eliminated, backwater conditions at the approach section would increase to 0.5 foot. Backwater effects extend upstream more than 3,000 feet when flows exceed about 5,000 cubic feet per second.
\n
The present arrangement of the bridges and approach embankments occupies about 66 percent of the channel (between the levee and high ground). Measurements of the average velocity of flow at a bridge range from l to 3.2 feet per second, depending on the flood stages of the Feather River. The maximum point velocity of flow measured during the 1979-80 flood season was 5. 6 feet per second. In general, flow velocities will be less than about 6 feet per second because flooding and high stages on the Feather River create ponded conditions at the bridge site. For present channel and bridge conditions, overbank flows are distributed among the three bridges in a proportion of about 10, 40, and 50 percent for flows from 2,850 to 8,480 cubic feet per second.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr811010","usgsCitation":"Blodgett, J.C., 1982, Floodflow characteristics of Honcut Creek at State Highway 70 bridges near Live Oak, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1010, vii, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811010.","productDescription":"vii, 32 p.","numberOfPages":"41","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140743,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr811010.jpg"},{"id":310499,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1010/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Live Oak","otherGeospatial":"Honcut Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.62208557128906,\n              39.23305093883473\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.62208557128906,\n              39.295516858108876\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.51016235351562,\n              39.295516858108876\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.51016235351562,\n              39.23305093883473\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.62208557128906,\n              39.23305093883473\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667645","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blodgett, J. Calcite and (or) aragonite are the most common of all the precipitated minerals. Gypsum and (or) anhydrite, as well as barite and native sulfur, are less common but are also believed to be precipitated minerals. Precipitated manganese and iron oxides, including romanechite, manganite, pyrolusite, goethite, and hematite, were found in some of the samples. Various salts of sodium, including halite and thenardite, were also identified. Dolomite and an unknown type of siliceous material are present in some of the samples and were possibly precipitated at the spring sites. Quartz, feldspar, and mica are present in many of the samples and are believed to be detrital contaminants. \r\n\r\nAn autoradiographic and thin section study of 11 samples from nine of the most radioactive spring sites showed the radioactivity, which is due primarily to radium, to be directly associated with mineral phases containing barium, manganese, iron, and (or) calcium as major constituents. Furthermore, the radioactivity has an exclusive affinity for the manganese-bearing minerals, which in these samples contain a substantial amount of barium, even if calcite or iron oxides are present. Where calcite predominates and manganese- and barium-bearing minerals are absent, the radioactivity shows a close association with the iron oxides present, especially hematite, but also shows a moderate association with the calcite and (or) aragonite cementing phases. In other samples composed predominantly of calcite but lacking iron oxides, the radioactivity is preferentially associated with an early stage of calcite development and is considerably lower in the later cementing stages. The radioactivity observed in all these samples is believed to be caused by radium substituting for barium in mineral lattices, filling irregularities in other crystal structures, or adsorbing on the surfaces of precipitated molecules.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82792","usgsCitation":"Bove, D., and Felmlee, J., 1982, Mineralogy and autoradiography of selected mineral-spring precipitates in the Western United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-792, 78 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82792.","productDescription":"78 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141395,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0792/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35565,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0792/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699eab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bove, Dana","contributorId":97104,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bove","given":"Dana","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156972,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Felmlee, J.K.","contributorId":106114,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Felmlee","given":"J.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156973,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
