The method is typically applied to estimate terrain effects for topography near the station, for example within 3 km of the station, although it has been used successfully to a radius of 15 km to estimate corrections in areas where topographic mapping is poor. \r\n\r\nPoints (about 20) that define topographic maxima, minima, and changes in the slope gradient are picked on the topographic map, within the desired radius of correction about the station. Particular attention must be paid to the area immediately surrounding the station to ensure a good topographic representation. The horizontal and vertical coordinates of these points are entered into the computer, usually by means of a digitizer. The computer then fits a multiquadric surface to the input points to form an analytic representation of the surface. By means of the divergence theorem, the gravity effect of an interior closed solid can be expressed as a surface integral, and the terrain correction is calculated by numerical evaluation of the integral over the surfaces of a cylinder, The vertical sides of which are at the correction radius about the station, the flat bottom surface at the topographic minimum, and the upper surface given by the multiquadric equation. \r\n\r\nThe method has been tested with favorable results against models for which an exact result is available and against manually computed field-station locations in areas of rugged topography. By increasing the number of points defining the topographic surface, any desired degree of accuracy can be obtained. The method is more objective than manual ring-chart techniques because no average compartment elevations need be estimated ?","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821045","usgsCitation":"Gettings, M.E., 1982, Near-station terrain corrections for gravity data by a surface-integral technique: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1045, 22 p., ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821045.","productDescription":"22 p., ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141605,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1045/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36729,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1045/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4affe4b07f02db697ea9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gettings, M. The reservoir, on the Kootenai River, was impounded by Libby Dam on March 21, 1972. Manipulation of the 7.16-cubic-kilometer reservoir for flood control, its primary function, created large fluctuations in reservoir volume and produced annual lake-filling times that ranged from 0.14 to 0.66 year.\r\n\r\nLoadings of nitrogen and phosphorus prior to and following impoundment of Lake Koocanusa were found to be large enough to predict eutrophic conditions. Beginning in 1976, total phosphorus loadings, but not total nitrogen loadings, were substantially reduced following improvements in waste-water treatment at a fertilizer plant located upstream from the reservoir. The closure of Libby Dam substantially reduced loadings of nitrogen and phosphorus downstream from Lake Koocanusa. On the average, the reservoir retained 63 percent of its influent loading of total phosphorus and 25 percent of its influent loading of total nitrogen.\r\n\r\nDaily areal and volumetric primary productivity varied widely in each year at four sampled limnological stations. During the 9 years studied, daily areal primary productivity, in milligrams of carbon fixed per square meter, ranged from 0.4 to 420.0; the mean of the 313 sampled days was 128.5. Annual areal primary productivity ranged from 23.2 to 38.5 grams of carbon fixed per square meter and thereby categorized Lake Koocanusa as oligotrophic.\r\n\r\nThe relationship of annual areal primary productivity and 12 selected environmental variables was determined by multiple regression analysis. One of the models that was derived used two variables-annual euphotic zone depth and annual areal phosphorus loading-and accounted for 62.0 percent of the variation in annual areal primary productivity.\r\n\r\nThe distribution of chlorophyll a within the water column indicated that, on the average, more than one-half of the phytoplankton in the reservoir was beneath the euphotic zone. These results support the hypothesis that the reservoir's weak thermal structure had allowed circulation of phytoplankton out of the euphotic zone.\r\n\r\nThe trophic state of Lake Koocanusa was categorized as eutrophic when based on the relationship of the nutrient loadings and the reservoir's ratio of mean depth to hydraulic-residence time. This result conflicted with the oligotrophic ranking the reservoir received based on its areal primary productivity. The discrepancy in trophic state was attributed mainly to the failure of nutrient loading models to adequately account for physical processes within reservoirs. Part of the nutrient loading that entered Lake Koocanusa was unavailable to phytoplankton because the nutrients were carried beneath the euphotic zone by large volumes of interflow and underflow. Another part of the nutrient loading was adsorbed to suspended sediment and removed from the water column. Thus, phytoplankton primary productivity was controlled not only by nutrients, but also by other limno logical processes.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1283","usgsCitation":"Woods, P.F., 1982, Annual Nutrient Loadings, Primary Productivity, and Trophic State of Lake Koocanusa, Montana and British Columbia, 1972-80: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1283, iv, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1283.","productDescription":"iv, 24 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":120306,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1283/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":65319,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1283/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -119,47.75 ], [ -119,52 ], [ -113,52 ], [ -113,47.75 ], [ -119,47.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6ae031","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Woods, Paul F.","contributorId":82273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Woods","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":220041,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The folds probably were formed as a result of differential sediment loading when eolian sand dunes of the overlying Summerville Formation of Middle Jurassic age migrated over soft, chemically precipitated, lime muds of the Todilto shortly after their deposition in a regressive, mixed fresh and saline lacustrine or marine environment of deposition. \r\n\r\nEncroachment of Summerville eolian dunes over soft Todilto lime muds was apparently a local phenomenon and was restricted to postulated beltlike zones which trended radially across the Todilto coastline toward the receding body of water. Intraformational folding is believed to be confined to the pathways of individual eolian dunes or clusters of dunes within the dune belts. During the process of sediment loading by migrating sand dunes, layers of Todilto lime mud were differentially compacted, contorted, and dewatered, producing both small- and large-scale plastic deformation structures, including convolute laminations, mounds, rolls, folds, and small anticlines and synclines. With continued compaction and dewatering, the mud, in localized areas, reached a point of desaturation at which sediment plasticity was lost. Prolonged loading by overlying dune sands thus caused faulting, shearing, fracturing, and jointing of contorted limestone beds. These areas or zones of deformation within the limestone became the preferred sites of epigenetic uranium mineralization because of the induced transmissivity created by sediment rupture. \r\n\r\nAlong most of the prograding Todilto coastline, adjacent to the eolian dune belts, both interdune and coastal sabkha environments dominated during Todilto-Summerville time. Sediments in coastal areas consisted mainly of clay, silt, sandy silt, and very fine-grained sand, which was apparently derived from the winnowing of the finer grained fraction of sediment from adjacent dune fields during periods of eolian activity. Most of the sabkha sediments were probably carried in airborne suspension to the low-lying, ground-water-saturated coastal areas, where they were deposited as relatively uniform blanket-like layers. Deposition of sabkha deposits was apparently slow and uniform over most of the Todilto coastal areas and crested only small-scale deformation features in underlying Todilto rocks. Large-scale deformation features and uranium deposits are both notably absent in the Todilto where it is overlain by finer textured sabkha deposits in the Summerville.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8269","usgsCitation":"Green, M.W., 1982, Origin of intraformational folds in the Jurassic Todilto Limestone, Ambrosia Lake uranium mining district, McKinley and Valencia counties, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-69, iii, 29 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8269.","productDescription":"iii, 29 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141778,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0069/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36882,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0069/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cf06","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Green, M. Although subject to State reclamation law, current and projected strip mining of this relatively thin coal seam could alter and hydrologic environment of the study area. Drained by the Marais des Cygnes and Little Osage Rivers and their tributaries, this area is characterized by low relief and moderately impermeable soils. Streamflows are poorly sustained by ground-water discharge and fluctuate widely due to climatic extremes and usage of surface-water supplies. Because ground-water supplies are generally unreliable in quantity and quality, surface water is used to meet most water requirements in the study area. Primary used of surface waters are for domestic supplies, maintenance of wildlife and recreational areas, and cooling needs at LaCygne Power Plant. The prevailing chemical type of the natural streamflow is calcium bicarbonate, with concentrations of dissolved solids generally less than 500 milligrams per liter and pH near neutral. Additional streamflow and water-quality data are needed to evaluate the premining characteristics of and the anticipated changes in the hydrologic environment as strip mining proceeds within the study area. A network of data-collection stations and a sampling scheme have been established to acquire this additional information.
