In the northern and the extreme southern parts of the county, most wells are completed in bedrock at depths less than 100 feet. In the central part, most wells are completed in glacial deposits; some of these wells are as deep as 200 feet. Yields, in some places as high as 300 gallons per minute, are generally greatest from wells completed in glacial deposits. Most well water is hard and has iron concentrations ranging from ﻿&lt;0.1 mg/L to about 5.0 mg/L. Proterozoic crystalline rocks are exposed as inselbergs or rock pediment surfaces along the western border of the quadrangle. The crystalline basement is metavolcanic rock intruded by plutonic to hypabyssal rocks consisting of diorite and gabbro, biotite tonalite gneiss, biotite-hornblende monzogranite, biotite-sodic amphibole granite, and syenogranite to quartz syenite, listed in the inferred order of emplacement. Rhyolite-dacite fels, associated with andesitic to basaltic metavolcanic flow rocks and minor amphibolite, is interpreted to have resulted from metasomatic alteration of the flow rocks during emplacement of granitic plutons. \r\n\r\nThe Wajid Sandstone, of Cambrian to Ordovician age, is largely a coarse-grained quartz arenite with pebbly phases; common crossbedds indicate north-northwest to north-northeast directions of sand transport. Beds are cemented by iron oxide, carbonate, and minor quartz. The Wajid Sandstone is exposed only in the northwestern and northern parts of the quadrangle. \r\n\r\nQuaternary deposits record a climate that became increasingly more arid. They include Holocene and Pleistocene(?) alluvial and fluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and silt, minor carbonate crusts, and eolian sand and silt. Gravel terraces and gravel plains less than 10 m above the present major wadi channels are widespread and commonly are overlain by marly silt along the wadis. Between major wadis, which discharge into the Rub al Khali basin, gravel-topped surfaces are partly covered by a complex of low, sinuous, discontinuous, generally northwest trending transverse sand dunes. Normal to this trend, higher and more extensive linear dunes and dune complexes, including seif (irq) dunes as high as 50 m, have encroached southwestward. The transverse and linear dunes may represent two stages of advance separated by a pluvial cycle. The mapped albedo changes were field checked in April 1981. Decreases in albedo were associated with increases in vegetation, primarily the flush of annual vegetation and the regrowth of vegetation in chained areas and sites of past fires. Increases in albedo were due to recent fires. \r\n\r\nContinuous monitoring of changes in albedo using current, rather than historical, Landsat images can provide the Bureau of Land Management with a means of monitoring vegetation growth, determining areas of high fire potential, and more efficiently deploying of field personnel to sites where severe changes are occuring in the quality of the land and vegetation resources. For example, an albedo change could be an indication of encroachment by an invader species. The Honeybrook subbasin could not be calibrated because of nonrepresentative rainfall data. The Coatesville subbasin was calibrated, but not verified; the average standard error of estimate is 34 percent for peak discharge. The Modena subbasin was calibrated and verified. Average error for peak discharge is 38 percent for calibration and 24 percent for verification.</p>\n<p>Predictive simulations using selected storms were made to determine the effects of projected population and four proposed flood-control structures in the Coatesville and Modena subbasins. Simulation of projected population growth in both subbasins showed that runoff volumes would generally have a greater percentage increase for low-magnitude floods than for high-magnitude floods. Proposed flood-control structure PA-436D had the greatest reduction in peak discharge at West Branch Brandywine Creek at Coatesville when a large quantity of runoff entered the Coatesville subbasin from upstream. WA-2 had the greatest reduction in peak discharge when most of the runoff came from within the Coatesville subbasin. Although WA-2 and PA-430 will control about the same drainage area, WA-2 causes a greater reduction in peak discharge at Coatesville because PA-430 is to be located upstream from Rock Run Reservoir, which provides some flood- water storage. In the Modena subbasin, the simulated effect of proposed flood-control structure PA-428 showed that it would lower the peak discharge of Sucker Run at State Route 82 and either raise or have no effect on peak discharges at West Branch Brandywine Creek at Modena. Most simulations of the effects of proposed flood-control structures in the Coatesville subbasin on peak discharge at Modena showed a reduction in peak The data show that the stream at Modena and below Downingtown had periods of low dissolved oxygen, and that the stream below Downingtown had a particularly severe dissolved-oxygen deficiency from May through September 1974. The pH at all three sites exceeded 9.0 at times and the pH below Downingtown occasionally dropped below 6.0. The most critical period in the basin was from March to November when pH was most likely to exceed water-quality standards and dissolved oxygen was most likely to fall below the standards. Although solution of the underlying rocks is the ultimate cause of sinkholes, some have been induced by abrupt changes in ground-water levels caused by pumping. Declines in water levels cause loss of support to the bedrock roofs over cavities and to surficial material overlying openings in the top of bedrock. The volume of calcium, magnesium , and carbonate (the constituents of limestone and dolomite) in solution in the water withdrawn from four well fields near Tampa totaled about 240,000 cubic feet in 1978. Most induced solution takes place at the limestone surface however, and the area of induced recharge is so extensive that the effect of induced limestone solution on sinkhole development is negligible. Alinement of established sinkholes along joint patterns in the bedrock suggests that a well along these lineations might have direct hydraulic connection with a zone of incipient sinkholes. Therefore, pumping of large-capacity wells along such lineations would increase the probability of sinkhole development. Although sinkholes generally form abruptly in the study area, local changes such as vegetative stress, ponding of rainfall, misalinement of structures, and turbidity in well water are all indications that percollapse subsidence may be taking place. Drilling of three other test holes was abandoned due to caving and loss of drilling tools, Before reaching the zone of saturation; the upper 100 meters of cap rock is unsaturated. Within the saturated part of the cap rock, hydraulic heads generally decrease with depth and to the northwest in this part of the valley.</p><p>Hydraulic conductivity of the cap rock, as determined from pumping tests, ranged from 9.3 X 10<sup>-5</sup> to 2.06 X 10<span id=\"_mce_caret\" data-mce-bogus=\"true\"><sup>﻿-1</sup></span> meters per day; as a result, groundwater flow rates in the cap rock are low. Water ranges from a calcium bicarbonate sulfate type on the western edge of the valley to a calcium magnesium sodium bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride type near the center of the valley. The short term study indicated that the water in Luxapallila, Magby, and McCrary Creeks is suitable for many purposes.</p><p>The dissolved-oxygen concentration, temperature, and pH of the water in Luxapallila Creek changed little downstream from site 1 to site 5. The mean specific conductance increased from 25 micromhos per centimeter at site 1 to 46 micromhos per centimeter at site 5. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus species, densities of fecal bacteria and 5-day biochemical-oxygen-demand load in Luxapallila Creek also increased downstream.</p><p>The maximum BOD<sub>5</sub> increased from 0.7 mg/L at the upstream site to 2.6 mg/L at the most downstream site. The maximum total nitrogen concentration increased from 0.71 mg/L to 2.0 mg/L. The maximum ammonia nitrogen concentration increased from 0.08 mg/L to 0.50 mg/L. In one of these hypotheses it is suggested that the deposits resulted from geochemical reactions at the interface between a relatively stagnant groundwater solution and a dynamic, ore-carrying groundwater solution which permeated the host sandstones (Shawe, 1956; Granger, et al., 1961; Granger, 1968, 1976; and Granger and Warren, 1979). The study described here was designed to investigate some aspects of this hypothesis, particularly the nature of fluid flow in sands and sandstones, the nature and distribution of deposits, and the relations between the deposits and the host sandstones. \r\n\r\nThe investigation, which was divided into three phases, involved physical model, field, and computer simulation studies. During the initial phase of the investigation, physical model studies were conducted in porous-media flumes. These studies verified the fact that humic acid precipitates could form at the interface between a humic acid solution and a potassium aluminum sulfate solution and that the nature and distribution of these precipitates were related to flow phenomena and to the nature and distribution of the host porous-media. During the second phase of the investigation field studies of permeability and porosity patterns in Holocene stream deposits were investigated and the data obtained were used to design more realistic porous media models. These model studies, which simulated actual stream deposits, demonstrated that precipitates possess many characteristics, in terms of their nature and relation to host sandstones, that are similar to ore deposits of the Colorado Plateau. \r\n\r\nThe final phase of the investigation involved field studies of actual deposits, additional model studies in a large indoor flume, and computer simulation studies. The field investigations provided an up-to-date interpretation of the depositional environments of the host sandstones in the Slick Rock District and data on the nature and distribution of the ore deposits which are found to be directly related to the architecture of the host sandstones which acted as conduits for the transport of mineralized groundwaters. Large-scale model studies, designed to simulate Grants Mineral Belt deposits, demonstrated that precipitates had characteristics similar to those of actual uranium deposits and data obtained from these studies strongly supported the hypothesis that the ores formed soon after deposition of the host sandstones and that their distribution was largely controlled by permeability and porosity patterns established at the time of deposition of the host sandstones. \r\n\r\nA numerical model was developed during the second and third stages of the investigation that can predict favorable locations for mineralization given sufficient data on porosity, hydraulic conductivity, the distribution and thickness of sandstone hosts, and an estimate of the initial hydrologic conditions. Of 82 stations with available data, 32 </span><span>stations or 39 percent were considered to have sufficient data for </span><span>analysis. The classification of water type was based on the relation of </span><span>the major ions: calcium, magnesium, sodium, carbonate, bicarbonate, </span><span>sulfate, and chloride to each other within the range of measured specific </span><span>conductance. The suitability for use as a public supply was based on </span><span>the concentration distribution of selected constituents. The constitu</span><span>ents selected were those with maximum contaminant levels established by </span><span>regulation, or constituents for which recommended maximum limits have </span><span>been established and for which historic data are available. The irriga</span><span>tion classification method of Wilcox </span><span>was </span><span>used to relate sodium, calcium, </span><span>and magnesium concentrations and the salinity distribution to the suita</span><span>bility for use of the water for irrigation. Samples used were collected for a 1978 study in the central part of the Deep Creek Range, Juab County, Utah. \r\n\r\nComputed correlations among elements in granitic igneous rock samples suggest a high degree of covariation among elements that compose the rock. Uranium, however, shows significant correlation with only 12 elements and almost zero correlation with thorium. Computed correlations among elements in the derived sediment suggest that major decreases have occurred in covariation of the elements in the derived sands. Uranium in the sands, however, shows 15 significant correlations compared to 12 in the igneous rock samples, and shows an extremely high correlation with thorium. The aquifer in Kansas underlies an area of 31,000 square miles in the western and south-central part. This aquifer is a hydraulically connected assemblage of unconsolidated water-bearing deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age. Maps published at a scale of 1:500,000 show the altitude and configuration of the water table in Kansas during 1965. Groundwater moved from higher altitudes in the western part of the High Plains to lower altitudes in the eastern part at a average rate of 10 ft/mi. The upgradient flexure of water table contours along some of the valleys indicates that groundwater was discharged to the streams in those areas. Geohydrologic data are compiled on six maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a major valley-fill aquifer in southwestern Dutchess County and a small part of Putnan County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, aquifer thickness, water-table elevations and land use. The valley-fill deposits consist of alluvial silt and sand, glacial-outwash (sand and gravel), ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Saturated layers of sand and gravel underlie confining layers of silt and clay, and also underlie confining till. The water-infiltration potential of the soil zone of the valley-fill varies widely. Aquifer thickness data is sparse, especially data on the lower confined aquifer layers. Water-table elevations within the surface aquifer are gently sloping, directing ground-water flow towards streams into which discharge occurs. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly agricultural and residential, with lesser amounts of commercial and industrial uses. Mineral deposits in the study area have been mined or prospected intermittently since about 1900, and production of small tonnages of ores containing gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten has been recorded. Extensive exploration and development currently (1981) is underway at a molybdenum prospect about 65 km east of Ketchikan. Our mineral-resource assessment indicates that the area contains potentially significant amounts of those metallic commodities, as well as of molybdenum, iron, antimony, and barite. The results of these studies have been published in a folio of maps accompanied by descriptive texts, diagrams, tables, and pertinent references. The present report serves as a guide to these investigations, provides relevant background information, and integrates the component maps and reports.
