Water-quality data for 106 stream, canal, and drain sites, 13 lake and reservoir sites, and 4 wells. Additional water data, collected at various sites that are not part of the systematic data-collection program, are published as miscellaneous measurements. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Nevada.

Geohydrologic data are compiled on six maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together, the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a major valley-fill aquifer in southeastern Rockland County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, aquifer thickness, water-table elevations, well yields, and land use. The valley-fill deposits consists of alluvial silt and sand, glacial outwash (sand and gravel), ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel beds have relatively high permeabilities, whereas the till, silt, and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel along the Ramapo River valley and much of the Mahwah River valley. Artesian conditions prevail in confined sand and gravel buried under silt and clay and till in parts of the Mahway valley. The aquifer is recharged throughout, where the land surface is most permeable and is greatest along the margin of the valley, where runoff from the hillsides is concentrated. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly commercial, agricultural and residential, with lesser industrial uses. The contiguous Cohutta Wilderness and Hemp Top Roadless Area are in the western part of the Blue Ridge physiographic province of northern Georgia and southeastern Tennessee (fig. 1).  All of the study area is in Georgia except an irregular strip of land about 1 mi at its widest on the northern end of the Cohutta Wilderness in Tennessee.  The area of the Cohutta Wilderness is 34,650 acres; that of the Hemp Top Roadless Area is 2,800 acres.  The areas are in rugged mountainous terrain- a strongly dissected upland ranging in altitude from about 980 to 4,200 ft above sea level.  Local altitude differences of 1,450-2,000 ft and slopes steeper than 25° are common.  The north end of the Cohutta Wilderness is about 6 mi south of the Ocoee River gorge, 10 mi west-southwest of the major copper-and sulfur-mining district at Ducktown, Tenn., and approximately 22 mi southeast of Cleveland, Tenn., in Bradley County, west of the area shown in figure 1.  The eastern, central, and northwestern parts of the wilderness are drained by Jacks River and it tributaries; the southwestern part, by the Conasauga River and its tributaries; and the Hemp Top Roadless Area, by Tumbling Creek and some of its western tributaries.  All drainage ultimately goes to the Ocoee River and from these into the Hiwassee River.

The top of the limestone unit ranges from about 25 feet above sea level in western Duval County to about 75 feet below sea level locally in the eastern part of the county. The limestone, which is part of the surficial aquifer, is the principal source of water to shallow wells in the county. The unit generally consists of a soft, friable, cavernous, sandy limestone, which ranges from about 5 to 40 feet in thickness. Along the coast and in the southern part of the county, the limestone becomes discontinuous.

A mineral resource assessment of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Bureau of Mines. The area was evaluated for its mineral potential by analysis of geochemical samples by the U.S. Geological Survey and by examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area has a low potential for minerals and little surficial indication of potential for oil, gas, or geothermal energy. Assignment of a low potential is based on consideration of geologic environments where mineral and other resources might be expected.

The mineral resource potential of the Gila-San Francisco Wilderness Study Area (AZ-040-022/023/024) is low (fig. 2). Although favorable geologic environments for placer gold deposits and manganese vein deposits are present in the study area, the probability of discovering economically exploitable deposits of these metals is low, and not encouraging. Even more speculative is the study area's porphyry copper potential which is based solely on the possibility of favorable host terranes underlying the study area at depth. The study area does contain substantial deposits of pumice, but their economic significance is probably minor. A part of the study area has been previously designated a Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA).

A geologic, geophysical, and geochemical investigation and a survey of mines, quarries, and prospects have been conducted to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the Lost Cove and Harper Creek Roadless Areas, Avery and Caldwell Counties, North Carolina. The study area lies within the Blue Ridge physiographic province and is predominatly underlain by Precambrian age plutonic and metasedimentary rocks of low metamorphic grade. All surface and mineral rights are Federally owned. Permit areas for uranium prospecting cover about 85 percent of the area.

\n

Uranium-rich rock in the Lost Cove and Harper Creek Roadless Areas occurs widely in the Wilson Creek Gneiss and to a minor extent in the Grandfather Mountain Formation. Vein-type deposits and other occurrences of uranium in foliated rocks in the Wilson Creek Gneiss have uranium resource potential. Speculative resources of uranium in vein-type deposits and in supergene-enriched foliated rocks are estimated to total 4 to 8 million pounds of U3O8.

Mineral resources having low to moderate potential are gold and minerals of thorium, beryllium, niobium, and copper. Stone has a low economic potential; lead, molybdenum, and titanium have low resource potential. These conclusions are based on results of prospect examination, radiometric survey, geochemical survey of stream sediments, saprolite, and bedrock.

The Muddy Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA 050-0229), Clark County, Nevada, has a high potential for mineral deposits of calcium borates and lithium. The known and potential mineral deposits are concentrated in the east-central and south-central parts of the study area (see map). Zeolites (in particular clinoptilolite) are present in some tuff beds throughout much of the study area, and this resource potential is probably moderate to high. Stream-sediment sampling suggests that the Muddy Mountains area has little potential for mineral deposits of metals (other than lithium). Clay minerals are mined at one locality in the (!rea (see map). Building stone and silica sand have moderate to low potential in some places. Oil and gas potential within the study area is low, but complete evaluation of its potential is not possible without drilling.

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the arm of the San Francisco Bay estuary that reaches into the Central Valley of California, differs from typical coastal-plain deltas in three important respects.  First, rather than meeting the ocean individually and directly, all major waterways of this delta discharge via a single constricted outlet into a chain of estuarine bays and straits.  Second, in the most common vertical sequence of deposits, peat and mud deposited in tidal marshes and swamps (tidal wetlands) directly overlie alluvium or eolian sand, a sequence recording a landward spread of tidal environments rather than the seaward migration of fluvial environments that is typical of coastal-plain deltas (Cosby, 1941, p. 43; Thompson, 1957, p. 12; Shlemon and Begg, 1975, p. 259; Atwater and Belknap, 1980).  Finally, intensive human use has led to a peculiar set of conflicts involving rights to water and responsibilities for flood-control levees (Kockelman and other, 1982).

The methods presented in this report are designed to permit habitat classification of reservoirs, containing coolwater, coldwater, and seasonal two-story fisheries, based on harvest of selected coolwater and coldwater sport fishes. Multiple regression equations describing relations between reservoir environmental characteristics and biomass harvest of selected sport fish species or groups are presented. Cumulative Frequency (CF) plots of known harvest estimates from the various classes of reservoirs are presented to facilitate conversion of harvest predictions to Habitat Suitability Indices (HSI's). Detailed descriptions and limitations of the procedures are discussed.
