This report, in two volumes, contains discharge records for 226 gaging stations; stage only records for 1 lake; stage and contents for 16 lakes and reservoirs; water quality for 116 gaging stations, 68 ungaged stations, 4 lakes and reservoirs, and 253 wells and springs; and water levels for 48 observation wells. Also included are 111 crest-stage partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at: various sites, not part of the systematic data-collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analyses. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Wyoming.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wdrWY761","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Wyoming and with other agencies","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1977, Water resources data, Wyoming, water year 1976; volume 1. The site, which includes about 7.8 km 2, is highly accessible and is adjacent to a railroad. \r\n\r\nThe anticline is one of a series of northwest-trending salt anticlines lying along the northeast edge of the Paradox basin. These anticlines are cored by evaporites of the Paradox Member of the Hermosa Formation of Middle Pennsylvanian age. \r\n\r\nThe central core of the Salt Valley anticline forms a ridgelike mass of evaporites that has an estimated amplitude of 3,600 m. The evaporite core consists of about 87 percent halite rock, which includes some potash deposits; the remainder is black shale, silty dolomite, and anhydrite. The latter three lithologies are referred to as 'marker beds.' Using geophysical logs from drill holes on the anticline, it is possible to demonstrate that the marker beds are complexly folded and faulted. \r\n\r\nAvailable data concerning the geothermal gradient and heatflow at the site indicate that heat from emplaced wastes should be rapidly dissipated. \r\n\r\nPotentially exploitable resources of potash and petroleum are present at Salt Valley. Development of these resources may conflict with use of the site for waste emplacement.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77761","usgsCitation":"Hite, R.J., 1977, Subsurface geology of a potential waste emplacement site, Salt Valley Anticline, Grand County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-761, ii, 26 p. :ill., map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77761.","productDescription":"ii, 26 p. :ill., map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141036,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0761/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37237,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0761/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699a1f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hite, R. These chemical changes are related to the pathways of various water parcels from the time they fall as rain until they enter the stream, and to the interactions between water and sediment during transport downstream. In order to understand better the chemical variations during storms, an extensive investigation was made of the Mattole River, a chemically clean coastal stream in Mendocino County, California. The Mattole drains a topographically mature basin of 620 sw km which has relief of about 1200 m, a long summer dry season, and mean annual rainfall of about 2300 mm. The stream flow is composed of seasonally varying proportions of four flow components, namely, surface runoff, quick-return flow (rainfall having brief and intimate contact with the soil before entering the surface drainage), delayed-return flow, and base runoff. Each component is identified by its characteristic chemistry and by the time delay between rainfall and entrance into the stream. Information is also presented on rain chemistry, adsorption reactions of suspended sediments in the fresh and brackish environments, and compositional variation of river sediments with particle size. The lack of storage and diversion works upstream as well as State compacts preclude the ready use of this surplus water. These surplus flows are impounded in mainstream reservoirs on the Missouri downstream from coal mining areas but could be transported back at some expense for use in Wyoming and North Dakota. There are limited water supplies available for the development of coal and oil shale industries in the upper Colorado River Basin. Fortunately oil shale mining, retorting and reclamation do not require as much water as coal conversion; in-situ oil shale retorting would seem to be particularly desirable in the light of reduced water consumption. Existing patterns of energy production, transport, and conversion suggest that more of the coal to be mined out West is apt to be transmitted to existing load centers rather than converted to electricity or gas in the water-short West. Scenarios of development of the West 's fossil fuels may be overestimating the need for water since they have assumed that major conversion industries would develop in the West. Transport of coal to existing users will require all means of coal movement including unit trains, barges, and coal slurry pipelines. The latter is considered more desirable than the development of conversion industries in the West when overall water consumption is considered. Two carbonate stages can be distinguished and defined on the basis of mineral association, compositional range and position in the sequence of ore deposition. Electron microprobe analyses show that the early pre-ore carbonate stage is comprised of rhodochrosite with a compositional range of 68 to 93 mole percent MnCO3, 7 to 32 mole percent FeCO3, 2 to 15 mole percent CaCO3, and 0.5 to 4 mole percent MgCO3. The later intra-ore carbonate stage is made up of siderite-manganosiderite with a broad range of iron content (33 to 94 mole percent FeCO3; 6 to 67 mole percent MnCO3; 1 to 13 mole percent CaCO3; and 1 to 10 mole percent MgCO3). Both carbonate stages are spatially restricted within the vein system, the rhodochrosite limited to the southern third and the siderite limited to the northern two-thirds. The two stages have not been found at the same sample locality. \r\n\r\nThe two stages of carbonate define two of the five main depositional stages in the history of the Creede hydrothermal system and thereby document broad scale variations within the depositing, and continually evolving fluids. However, the complexity of the textural and mineralogical variations within each carbonate stage limits their usefulness in unraveling the finer details of the character of the ore fluids. The frequently massive rhodochroslte has undergone several periods of leaching and regrowth which, except at one locality, cannot be resolved by compositional, textural or color variations. Although some compositionally zoned siderite rhombs have been documented, the siderite, too, has had a complicated history of leaching and regrowth. The zoning indicates (i) an early low-calcium siderite + hematite growth followed by (2) relatively high-calcium siderite depositlon (without hematite) followed by (3) low-calcium siderite deposition without hematite. The composition of the high-calcium siderite lies well outside of the recognized stability field for siderite at 250?C and, therefore, is considered either a metastable phase or possibly a new mineral. \r\n\r\nCarbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of the carbonates together with the hydrogen isotopic composition of inclusion fluids suggest that the fluids depositing the carbonates either were deep-seated in origin, or, less likely, were meteoric waters which came in contact with a large volume of magmatic rock with which it exchanged isotopes. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the fluids that deposited the carbonates are significantly different from those that yielded the other vein minerals (sphalerite, chlorite, sericite, quartz, adularla). The latter minerals appear to-have been deposited from two distinctive fluids of meteoric origin. The stability fields of minerals present during the carbonate stages have been calculated for 250?Co The results indicate that conditions during carbonate deposition were not drastically different from those suggested by Barton and others (1977) for main-stage ore deposition, although little ore, if any, was deposited during the carbonate stages. A new value for the free energy of formation of siderite was calculated since all of the most recently published values predict too small a stability field for the siderite based on the occurrence of siderite at Creede, The change to the more iron-rich composition of the later stage carbonate was probably controlled by the pyrite-chlorite buffer which was not present during early-stage carbonate deposition.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77706","usgsCitation":"Wetlaufer, P.H., 1977, Geochemistry and mineralogy of the carbonates of the Creede mining district, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-706, x, 134 leaves :ill. Maps are prepared each May and September to coincide with seasonal low and high ground-water levels. The mapped area contains nine producing well fields which supplied 92.8 million gallons on May 12, 1976 to municipalities along the Gulf Coast. This pumpage came from the Floridan aquifer, the major aquifer in the State of Florida. The effect of well-field withdrawals is shown on the maps as cones of depression in both the potentiometric and water-table surfaces. The May 1976 maps indicate that water levels have declined below sea level in some areas. The decline results from reduced recharge during the dry spring combined with an increase in pumpage for lawn irrigation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77257","usgsCitation":"Hutchinson, C.B., and Mills, L.R., 1977, Water table in the surficial aquifer and potentiometric surface of the Floridan Aquifer in selected well fields, west-central Florida, May 1976: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-257, 14 leaves :4 maps (fold.) ;29 cm.; scale 1:24,000, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77257.","productDescription":"14 leaves :4 maps (fold.) ;29 cm.; scale 1:24,000","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143570,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0257/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37363,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0257/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37364,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0257/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37365,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0257/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37366,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0257/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37367,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0257/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee413","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hutchinson, C.
