This volume contains records for water discharge at 55 gaging stations; storm discharge at 7 gaging stations; stage only at 1 gaging station; tidal volume at 1 gaging station; storm rainfall at 6 gaging stations; stage only records at 3 tidal-gaging stations; contents at 35 lakes and reservoirs; water quality at 40 gaging stations, 4 lakes and reservoirs, 2 harbors, and 16 wells; and water levels at 58 observation wells. Also included are data for 43 crest-stage partial-record stations. Locations of these sites are shown on figures 2, 3, and 4. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not involved in the systematic data-collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analyses. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also enclosed in this volume. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State, local, and Federal agencies in Connecticut.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wdrCT811","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with State of Connecticut and with other Although subject to State reclamation law, current and projected strip mining of this relatively thin coal seam could alter and hydrologic environment of the study area. Drained by the Marais des Cygnes and Little Osage Rivers and their tributaries, this area is characterized by low relief and moderately impermeable soils. Streamflows are poorly sustained by ground-water discharge and fluctuate widely due to climatic extremes and usage of surface-water supplies. Because ground-water supplies are generally unreliable in quantity and quality, surface water is used to meet most water requirements in the study area. Primary used of surface waters are for domestic supplies, maintenance of wildlife and recreational areas, and cooling needs at LaCygne Power Plant. The prevailing chemical type of the natural streamflow is calcium bicarbonate, with concentrations of dissolved solids generally less than 500 milligrams per liter and pH near neutral. Additional streamflow and water-quality data are needed to evaluate the premining characteristics of and the anticipated changes in the hydrologic environment as strip mining proceeds within the study area. A network of data-collection stations and a sampling scheme have been established to acquire this additional information. The proposed program for 1982 includes a network of 69 surface-water data sites (continuous gaging stations), 250 flood-data sites (crest-stage stations), 679 ground-water wells (water-level observation and water-quality monitor wells), and 138 water-quality sites. The geographic distribution of the data sites is shown in the report. Interpretive studies have objectives that are oriented toward a particular geographic area , to a particular set of hydrologic phenomena, or to obtain information for use in solving specific problems. Current studies of interest to agriculture include the following: (1) Flood hydraulics and hydrology, (2) Low-flow or base-flow of streams in Louisiana, (3) Hydrologic studies in southwestern Louisiana, (4) Hydrologic impacts of surface mining in northern Louisiana, (5) Sparta aquifer study, and (6) Limnology of freshwater lakes. A network of partial record sites is also maintained to monitor specific flows. Peak stages (crest stage) are only recorded at sites where flood information is of interest. At other sites, only the low-flow or base-flow recession is obtained for use in determining relations between ground water and surface water, to assess water supply, and for effluent studies. We analyzed horizontal pseudo-velocity response at 5 percent damping for 64 records of 12 shallow earthquakes in Western North America, including the recent Coyote Lake and Imperial Valley, California, earthquakes. We developed predictive equations for 12 different periods between 0.1 and 4.0 s, both for the larger of two horizontal components and for the random horizontal component. The resulting spectra show amplification at soil sites compared to rock sites for periods greater than or equal to 0.3 s, with maximum amplification exceeding a factor of 2 at 2.0 s. For periods less than 0.3 s there is slight deamplification at the soil sites. These results are generally consistent with those of several earlier studies. A particularly significant aspect of the predicted spectra is the change of shape with magnitude (confirming earlier results by McGuire and by Irifunac and Anderson). This result indicates that the conventional practice of scaling a constant spectral shape by peak acceleration will not give accurate answers. The Newmark and Hall method of spectral scaling, using both peak acceleration and peak velocity, largely avoids this error. Comparison of our spectra with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Regulatory Guide 1.60 spectrum anchored at the same value at 0.1 s shows that the Regulatory Guide 1.60 spectrum is exceeded at soil sites for a magnitude of 7.5 at all distances for periods greater than about 0.5 s. Comparison of our spectra for soil sites with the corresponding ATC-3 curve of lateral design force coefficient for the highest seismic zone indicates that the ATC-3 curve is exceeded within about 7 km of a magnitude 6.5 earthquake and within about 15 km of a magnitude 7.5 event. Va.) has been increasing. However, additional statistical analysis does not indicate that the flood levels that were exceeded typically once or twice a year in the period 1947-79 are any more likely to be exceeded now than in 1947. Possible trends in streamchannel size also are investigated at three locations. No discernible trends in channel size are noted. Further statistical analysis of the trend in the size of annual-flood peaks shows that much of the annual variation is related to local rainfall and to the 'natural' hydrologic response in a relatively undisturbed subbasin. However, some statistical indication of trend persists after accounting for these natural factors, though it is of borderline statistical significance. Further study in the basin may relate flood magnitudes to both rainfall and to land use.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2203","usgsCitation":"Hirsch, R.M., Scott, A.G., and Wyant, T., 1982, Investigation of trends in flooding in the Tug Fork basin of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2203, iv, 37 p. : ill., maps ; 29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2203.","productDescription":"iv, 37 p. : ill., maps ; 29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138390,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2203/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":27179,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2203/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47b3e4b07f02db49ed01","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hirsch, Robert M. 0000-0002-4534-075X rhirsch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4534-075X","contributorId":2005,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hirsch","given":"Robert","email":"rhirsch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":502,"text":"Office of Surface Water","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":436,"text":"National Research Program - Eastern Branch","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37316,"text":"WMA - Integrated Information Dissemination Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37778,"text":"WMA - Integrated Modeling and Prediction Division","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":144317,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Scott, Arthur G.","contributorId":81885,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"Arthur","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144319,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wyant, Timothy","contributorId":26672,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wyant","given":"Timothy","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144318,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The drill hole, 1050 feet FEL, 700 feet FNL, sec. 3, T. 12 S., R. 24 E., Uintah County, Utah, started slightly below the contact between the Uinta Formation, also of Eocene age, and the underlying Green River Formation. It ended 32 feet below the base of the Mahogany bed (the richest oil-shale bed between A groove and B groove--which define the upper and lower boundaries, respectively, of the Mahogany zone). Most of the interval studied is kerogen- or carbonate-rich, commonly tuffaceous, and is very fine grained. \r\n\r\nSeveral thin (<3 feet) oil-shale beds which yield as much as 25 gallons of oil per ton occur above the Mahogany zone, but are probably not of economic interest. The cored sequence contains several tuff beds. The thickest of these beds is approximately 2 feet thick; the average thickness is rarely greater than 0.5 feet. Two oil-saturated tuff beds occur approximately 65 feet above the Mahogany oil-shale bed. Although these two tuffs are exposed on nearby surface outcrops, no evidence of oil is seen on outcrop. The Mahogany zone is approximately 69 feet thick at the drill site; the lowermost few feet were not penetrated. At the site cored, the Mahogany zone is overlain by 435 feet of overburden. Fischer assays indicate that 42.3 feet of oil shale within the Mahogany zone could yield at least 25 gallons of oil per ton from beds at least 10 feet thick.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82528","usgsCitation":"Keighin, C.W., 1982, Characteristics and description of cores from the USGS core hole CRU-1, Parachute Creek Member, Green River Formation, east-central Uinta Basin, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-528, i, 46 p., ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82528.","productDescription":"i, 46 p., ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142199,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0528/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37527,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0528/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e3e4b07f02db5e5592","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keighin, C. Molar volume data are given for most of the solid phases. Thermodynamic values for 16 uranium-bearing phases are presented for higher temperatures in the form of and as a supplement to U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1452 (Robie et al., 1979). \r\n\r\nThe internal consistency of the thermodynamic values reported herein is dependent upon the reliability of the experimental results for several uranium phases that have been used as secondary calorimetric reference phases. The data for the reference phases and for those phases evaluated with respect to the secondary reference phases are discussed. \r\n\r\nA preliminary model for coffinite formation has been proposed together with an estimate of the free energy of formation of coffinite. Accordingly, a study was undertaken to investigate the geologic environment associated with the geophysical anomalies and to determine whether mineral exploration of the anomalous areas might be warranted. An extensive geochemical sampling program did not disclose any evidence of ore mineral concentrations in the rocks. Detailed geologic mapping shows the anomalous areas to be underlain by Precambrian carbonaceous graywacke, the outcrop patterns of which closely fit the anomaly patterns. Streamflow, ground-water, and quality-of-water data were collected to provide information about baseline or prevailing hydrologic conditions. A network of hydrologic data-collection sites in the strippable coal areas of the Fruitland Formation was designed to meet the need of detailed investigations, including site-specific studies, and to provide hydrologic data in support of the expanding mining activity. The network consists of 34 continuous-record streamflow-gaging stations (32 included water-quality sampling), 20 miscellaneous water quality of streamflow stations, 12 annual maximum discharge stations, 27 observation wells completed in strata associated with the strippable coal seams, and 24 observation wells completed in channel alluvium downstream from strippable coal areas. Such wells in Florida may be grouped into two broad types: (1) Surface-water injection wells, and (2) interaquifer connector wells. Surface-water injection wells are commonly used to supplement drainage for urban areas in karst terranes of central and north Florida. Data are available for 25 wells in the Ocala, Live Oak, and Orlando areas that allow comparison of the quality of water samples from these Floridan aquifer drainage wells with allowable contaminant levels. Comparison indicates that maximum contaminant levels for turbidity, color, and iron, manganese, and lead concentrations are equaled or exceeded in some drainage-well samples, and relatively high counts for coliform bacteria are present in most wells. Interaquifer connector wells are used in the phosphate mining areas of Polk and Hillsborough Counties, to drain mining operations and recharge the Floridan aquifer. Water-quality data available from 13 connector wells indicate that samples from most of these wells exceed standards values for iron concentration and turbidity. One well yielded a highly mineralized water, and samples from 6 of the other 12 wells exceed standards values for gross alpha concentrations. The flowmeter was tested in the laboratory in 51-, 102-, and 152-millimeter-diameter columns using water velocities ranging from 0.35 to 250 millimeters per second. The heat-pulse flowmeter also was tested in a 15-meter-deep granite test pit with controlled water flow, and in a 58-meter-deep borehole in sedimentary materials. The flowmeter's capability to detect and measure naturally occurring, low-velocity, thermally induced convection currents in boreholes was demonstrated. Further improvements to the heat-pulse-flowmeter system are needed to increase its reliability and improve its response through four-conductor logging cable.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82699","usgsCitation":"Hess, A., 1982, A heat-pulse flowmeter for measuring minimal discharge rates in boreholes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-699, iv, 44 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82699.","productDescription":"iv, 44 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142763,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0699/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37159,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0699/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae4ae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hess, A.E.","contributorId":71979,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hess","given":"A.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159715,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
