The standard step-backwater method for gradually varied, subcritical flow was used in computing the water-surface profiles and stage-discharge ratings. Step-backwater computations were made at selected intervals from I through 1,000 cubic feet per second on Lodgepole Creek, through 150 cubic feet per second on Raven Creek, and through 600 cubic feet per second on Sand Creek. Stage-discharge rating curves and discharge measurements are illustrated for the three sites, with lines of 15-percent departure from the rating curves drawn to measure accuracy of the results. All discharge measurements showed departures of less than 15 percent at the high end of the rating curves.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2199","usgsCitation":"Druse, S.A., 1982, Verification of step-backwater computations on ephemeral streams in northeastern Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2199, iii, 12 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2199.","productDescription":"iii, 12 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":136999,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2199/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26256,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2199/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db6021b5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Druse, Stanley A.","contributorId":7252,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Druse","given":"Stanley","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143503,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Furthermore, the results of this mineral appraisal indicate that there is little likelihood that commercial deposits of metallic minerals will be found in the area. Commercial uranium deposits, like those at the White King and Lucky Lass mines about 16 mi (~25 km) to the southeast of the wilderness, and deposits of mercury, like those south-southeast of the wilderness, are not likely to be found within the wilderness, even though all of these areas are characterized by middle and late Cenozoic intrusive and extrusive volcanic rocks. Rock of low commercial value for construction purposes is present, but better and more accessible deposits are present in adjacent regions. There is no evidence to indicate that mineral fuels are present in the area. Higher than normal heat floe characterizes the region containing Gerheart Mountain, indicating that it may have some, as yet undefined, potential for the development of geothermal energy. Data are not available to determine whether this higher than normal heat flow is meaningful in terms of a potential energy source or as a guide to possible future exploration; lack of thermal springs or other evidence of localized geothermal anomalies within the Gerhart Mountain suggest, however, that the potential for the development of geothermal energy is probably low.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1367","usgsCitation":"Walker, G.W., and Ridenour, J., 1982, Reconnaissance geologic map and mineral resource potential of the Gearhart Mountain Wilderness and Roadless Area (6225), Lake and Klamath counties, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1367, Report: 3 p.; 1 Plate: 28.60 x 25.20 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1367.","productDescription":"Report: 3 p.; 1 Plate: 28.60 x 25.20 inches","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":496035,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_7048.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":284428,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1367/report.pdf"},{"id":284427,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1367/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":182580,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1367.jpg"}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"Oregon","county":"Klamath County, Lake County","otherGeospatial":"Gearhart Mountain","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -120.913889,42.478333 ], [ -120.913889,42.543056 ], [ -120.715,42.543056 ], [ -120.715,42.478333 ], [ -120.913889,42.478333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd6f73e4b0b290851066be","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Walker, George W.","contributorId":101308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walker","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":265672,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ridenour, James","contributorId":87540,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ridenour","given":"James","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":265671,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The plan of study for the High Plains Regional Aquifer-System Analysis was described by Weeks (1978). A description of the High Plains aquifer and a map of the 1978 water table were presented by Gutentag and Weeks (1980). Maps of the bedrock geology, altitude of aquifer base, and saturated thickness of the High Plains aquifer were published by Weeks and Gutentag (1981). Water-level and saturated-thickness changes, from predevelopment to 1980, were mapped by Luckey, Gutentag, and Weeks (1981). This report describes the areal distribution of dissolved solids and sodium in the water of the High Plains aquifer. The aqueous wastes have created large and laterally dispersed concentration plumes within the aquifer. The waste plumes with the largest areal distribution are those of chloride, tritium, and with high specific conductance values. The data from eight wells drilled near the southern INEL boundary during the summer of 1980 were used to evaluate the accuracy of a predictive modeling study completed in 1973, and to simulate 1980 positions of chloride and tritium plumes. Data interpretation from the drilling program indicates that the hydrogeologic characteristics of the subsurface rocks have marked effects on the regional ground-water flow regimen and, therefore, the movement of aqueous wastes. As expected, the waste plumes projected by the computer model for 1980, extended somewhat further downgradient than indicated by well data due to conservative worst-case assumptions in the model input and inaccurate approximations of subsequent waste discharge and aquifer recharge conditions. Granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith predominate in the basin. Temperature of waters from thermal springs in the basin range from 33 degrees to 87 degrees Celsius, are sodium carbonate type and are slightly alkaline. Dissolved-solids concentrations are less than 280 milligrams per liter. Estimated reservoir temperatures determined by the silica and sodium-potassium-calcium geothermometers range from 50 degrees to 98 degrees Celsius. Tritium concentrations in sampled thermal springs are near zero and indicate these waters were recharged prior to 1954. Stable-isotope data are not conclusive insofar as indicating a source area of recharge for the thermal springs in the basin. Thermal springs discharged at least 4,900 acre-feet of water in 1981, and the associated convective heat flux is 11,000,000 calories per second. Irrigated acreages for 1974-80 were compiled for wheat, grain sorghum, corn, and alfalfa using records from the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Consumptive-irrigation requirements were computed using a soil-moisture model. The model tabulated monthly soil-moisture and crop-water demand for various crops and computed the volume of irrigation water needed to maintain the available moisture at 50% for loamy soils or at 60% for sandy soils. Irrigated acres in the study area increased from 265,000 acres during 1974 to 321,000 acres during 1980. Irrigation pumpage increased from 584,000 acre-feet during 1974 to 738,000 acre-feet during 1980. The stratigraphic framework showing the vertical and lateral distributions of rock types and the lateral continuity of coal beds is illustrated in cross sections. The cross sections were constructed from 112 stratigraphic sections measured at an average distance of 0.4 mi apart. Each section contained key marker beds (sandstone, coal, and tonstein) that were physically traced to adjacent sections. Each measured section was \"hung\" on multiple marker beds arranged in a geometric best-fit method that accounts for the differential compaction and facies associations of the deposits.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1390","isbn":"0607810238","usgsCitation":"Flores, R.M., and Erpenbeck, M.F., 1982, Stratigraphic framework and coal correlation of the Upper Cretaceous Fruitland Formation, Bisti-Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah area, San Juan Basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1390, 35.73 x 28.47 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1390.","productDescription":"35.73 x 28.47 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":180040,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1390.PNG"},{"id":327587,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1390/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"50000","country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.3,36.11666666666667 ], [ -108.3,36.3 ], [ -107.93388888888889,36.3 ], [ -107.93388888888889,36.11666666666667 ], [ -108.3,36.11666666666667 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6af60e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Flores, Romeo M. rflores@usgs.gov","contributorId":71984,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flores","given":"Romeo","email":"rflores@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":165,"text":"Central Energy Resources Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":265515,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Erpenbeck, Michael F.","contributorId":46609,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erpenbeck","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":265514,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These data are the foundation necessary for conducting analytical and interpretive appraisals describing the occurrence and availability of surface and ground waters, and their physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. The data are likewise required for basic and problem-oriented research in hydraulics, hydrology, and related fields. Hydrologic data collection by the Geological Survey began in 1894. Current operations include about 17,000 stations for collection of river, lake, and reservoir data; about 27,000 wells for collection of ground-water data; and almost 17,000 stations for collection of water-quality information. These activities are described as well as the means by which the data are made available, and how the program is coordinated with other agencies. Pleistocene deposits consist of lodgment and ablation tills, outwash, kame, beach and wave-delta sand and gravel, and lacustrine sand, silt, and clay. Holocene deposits consist of peat and muck deposited in wetlands , and alluvial silt, sand, and gravel deposited in stream valleys. Unconsolidated deposits contain sufficient water for domestic and small farm needs except in areas mantled by silt and clay. Sand and gravel deposits are the best source of large quantities of water. Aquifers in glacial outwash are common in the eastern Tug Hill region, whereas kame, esker-kame, and beach aquifers predominate in the eastern and central regions. The principal sand and gravel aquifer, known as the Lacona-Williamstown aquifer, is 20 miles long, 0.5 to 3 miles wide, and 10 to 85 feet thick. Wells tapping the aquifer yield from 220 to 800 gallons per minute. Fracturing, rather than rock type, is the controlling factor in the water-producing capacity of bedrock. Bedrock near or at land surface provides adequate supplies for domestic and farm needs. Shallow wells in bedrock have water of fair to good quality, but material content increases with depth. These modifications extend the application of this model to simulations involving head-dependent sources and sinks (i.e., rivers, evapotranspiration, and springs or drains). Other modifications are made that enhance the iterative-solution process of the Strongly Implicit Procedure (SIP). An acceleration (or dampening) factor is introduced to the matrix equation that is to be solved, and optional methods of computing iteration parameters are incorporated into the original model. This report also describes corrections to the model that eliminate errors in the equation formulation and in mass-balance computations of certain types of simulations. Additional data-input instructions, definitions of new variables, and a list of program-statement changes are given in an appendix. The only geologic formations exposed in the quadrangle are Quaternary volcanic rocks and surficial deposits. Most of the volcanic rocks are basalt that was extruded during a continuation of the opening of the Red Sea rift. The Quaternary surficial deposits include those of shallow bank and coral reefs, carbonate sand, sabkhahs, pediment and plains, and alluvial sand and gravel. The coral reefs could possibly provide raw material for a cement industry if required, and the sabkhahs might yield useful salts; otherwise the quadrangle has no economic mineral potential.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82287","usgsCitation":"Hadley, D., 1982, Reconnaissance geology of the Wadi Amq Quadrangle, sheet 18/41 C, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-287, 8 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82287.","productDescription":"8 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140936,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0287/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37004,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0287/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37005,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0287/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4de4b07f02db6277d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hadley, D.G.","contributorId":32527,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hadley","given":"D.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159423,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water-quality characteristics analyzed include specific conductance, pH, water temperature, major dissolved cations and anions, and coliform bacteria. Ground water from aquifers in all rock units is generally composed of calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate type and contains carbonate ions. Changes in area trends of ground-water composition probably are most directly related to variability in aquifer composition and proximity to varying sources of recharge, especially those related to man 's land- and water-use activities. In both orebodies, oxidized and reduced uranium minerals occur chiefly in quartzose schists that have highly variable amounts of muscovite, sericite, and chlorite. The effects of several periods of alteration are pervasive in the vicinity of orebodies where biotite and garnet are altered to chlorite, and feldspars to white mica or chlorite. Oxidized uranium minerals, associated with earthy iron oxides, occur from the surface to a depth of about 60 m. Below the oxidized zone, uranium occurs chiefly as uraninite and pitchblende disseminated through thick sections of quartz-chlorite-muscovite schist and has no apparent association with graphite or sulfides. In fact, graphite is rare and sulfides are generally low in abundance (<0.5 percent). Higher ore grades occur in disrupted zones a few centimeters thick and in some quartz-chlorite vein-like zones of uncertain origin. Uranium correlates strongly with chlorite, but not all of the many ages of chlorite have associated uranium. At least five textural varieties of chlorite are present and represent at least 3 ages. Preliminary microprobe analyses suggest that Mg-Fe-Al contents are relatively uniform. Apatite commonly occurs with chlorite. Uranium is not common in carbonate rocks and seems to occur only in disrupted zones that have chlorite alteration. Chloritization and silicification are more widespread and intense in the No. 1 orebody than in the No. 3. In both orebodies, hematite occurs tens to hundreds of meters below the weathered zone, in both altered and largely unaltered rocks, with and without uranium. \r\n\r\nThe structure of the orebodies is outwardly simple, particularly in No. 3; dips are less than 40? on most lithologic contacts. The No. 1 orebody is in a basin-like structure about 400 m wide that probably formed in part by progressive removal of carbonate rocks that are as much as 200 m thick adjacent to the No. 1 orebody and below the No. 3 orebody. Quartz-chlorite breccias have formed in the zone of carbonate thinning; uranium is spotty and low grade in these breccias. Chloritized and uraniferous broken and sheared zones, a few centimeters to a few meters thick, have an unknown attitude but must have small displacement. Blocks of altered Kombolgie sandstone are downfaulted into the No. 3 orebody and locally contain reduced uranium minerals. One or more shear zones 5-30 m thick of crushed and smeared fine to coarse rock fragments occur below the orebodies, and other low-angle shears probably occur in the orebodies. The shear zone dips about 40 o and displacement on it is not known. The footwall rocks generally are less retrograded than those in the hanging wall (orebody) and consist of quartz-biotite-feldspar schists and gneisses flanking the Nanambu Complex. A few scattered fractures in the footwall sequence contain pitchblende of unknown age and origin. \r\n\r\nMajor element chemical analyses confirm the lithologic observations of large changes in composition during multiple stages of alteration. Granitic dikes and pelitic schists have gained Fe and Mg and lost Si, Ca, Na, and K during chloritization. Marbles have gained Si, Al, Fe, and P, and lost Mg, Ca, and K during jasperoid-chlorite alteration. Total net chemical gains and losses in the Ranger No. 1 orebody were huge: equal to about 37 percent of the mass of the ore-bearing rock that will be mined. There were net gains in Si and P and net losses in Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, K, and Na. \r\n\r\nThe geologic age(s) of uranium emplacement are obscure because there are few age criteria. Reduced uranium minerals are younger than 1.8-b.y.-old granite dikes, and some occur locally in 1.65-b.y.-old Kombolgie Formation. Diabase dikes (age not known) are thoroughly chloritized and contain sparse ore minerals. A leak in a service station storage tank caused the formation of a gasoline layer overlying the water table, creating the potential for contamination of the water supply. The maximum horizontal extent of the gasoline layer was mathematically estimated to be 1,300 feet downgradient from the leaky gasoline tank. Exploratory drilling detected the gasoline layer between 900 and 1,400 feet downgradient and between 50 and 150 feet upgradient from the source. Traces of the soluble components of gasoline were also found in the aquifer 150 feet upgradient, and 250 feet distant from the source perpendicular to the direction of ground-water movement. The gasoline spill is not likely to have an effect on the supply wells located 0.4 mile south of the leak source, which is nearly perpendicular to the direction of ground-water movement and the primary direction of gasoline movement in the area. No effect on phreatophytes 2 miles downgradient from the layer is likely, but the potential effects of gasoline vapors within the unsaturated zone on local xerophytes are not known.
