The data indicate fair to excellent water quality. Fecal coliform bacteria, pH, alkalinity, iron, and manganese are the parameters that most often exceed recommended limits established by either the U. S. Results of the analysis can be used to determine relative risks associated with oil production in different regions to be offered in OCS Lease Sales 72, 74, and 79. The analysis considered the probability of spill occurrences based on historical trends; likely movement of oil slicks based on a climatological model; and locations of major environmental resources which could be vulnerable to spilled oil. The times between spill occurrence and contact with resources were estimated to aid in estimating slick characteristics. \r\n\r\nCritical assumptions made for this particular analysis were (1) that oil exists in the lease area, and (2) that oil will be, found and produced from tracts sold in sales 72, 74, and 79. On the basis of a most likely resource estimate of 241 million barrels of oil to be produced over an 18-year production life from sales to be held in 1983 (sales 72, 74, 79), it was calculated that approximately one oilspill of 1,000 barrels or larger will occur. The estimated probability that one or more oilspills of 1,000 barrels or larger will occur and contact land after being at sea less than 30 days is 41-percent. For a high resource estimate case of sales to be held in 1983, 717 million barrels are estimated to be produced over an 18-year production life with an 83-percent chance of one or more spills of 1,000 barrels or larger occurring and contacting land within 30 days. These results depend upon the routes and methods chosen to transport oil from OCS platforms to shore. \r\n\r\nGiven a total development scenario in which 5.6 billion barrels of oil are estimated to be present and produced, it was calculated that 18 oilspills of 1,000 barrels or larger will occur over the 40-year production life of the proposed lease area. The estimated probability that one or more oilspills of 1,000 barrels or larger will occur and contact land after being at sea less than 30 days is greater than 99.5 percent for this scenario. These probabilities also reflect the assumptions that oilspills remain intact for up to 30 days, do not weather, and are not cleaned up. It should be noted that the expected number of spills from the total development scenario is less than one-half that of the expected number from existing tanker transportation of crude oil imports in the Gulf area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82238","usgsCitation":"LaBelle, R., 1982, An oilspill risk analysis for the Gulf of Mexico outer continental shelf lease area; regional environmental impact statement: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-238, i, 210 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82238.","productDescription":"i, 210 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144223,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0238/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37709,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0238/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db68433a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"LaBelle, R.P.","contributorId":21964,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LaBelle","given":"R.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160519,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Calcium magnesium bicarbonate type water is most common. The dissolved-solids concentration ranges from about 200 to 1,000 milligrams per liter. The lowest values are in the northern part of the aquifer, where the bedrock is at or close to land surface, and the lowest ones are in the southwestern part, where leakage into the aquifer from overlying Cretaceous deposits is highly mineralized water. The concentrations of the major ions, except for bicarbonate and chloride, also increase toward the southwest. Confining beds protect the aquifer from surface pollutants, but high sulfate and iron concentrations and hardness degrade water quality locally in some places.
\n
The aquifer was deposited from Paleozoic seas that occupied a shallow depression known as the Hollandale embayment. The surface of the Ironton-Galesville aquifer dips toward the interior of the embayment. The aquifer is as deep as 1,000 feet below land surface and as thick as 325 feet. The Ironton and Galesville Sandstones are both white and medium grained. The aquifer is used mainly in the northern and western parts of the study area, where it is the uppermost bedrock aquifer,
\n
This report is one of a series on the hydrogeology and water quality of the 14 principal aquifers in Minnesota prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey. The aquifers consist chiefly of saturated sandstones that occur in Upper Permian, Upper Jurassic, and Lower and Upper Cretaceous rocks. In parts of southwestern Kansas, the sandstone aquifers already serve as the principal or secondary source of ground water for irrigation and other uses. Data indicate that water may be available for development in sandstone aquifers in other parts of the study area. In still other areas, water from wells in sandstone aquifers may not be of a suitable quality for some purposes. The data provided include records of selected wells, lithologic logs of test holes and wells, selected formation surfaces and sandstone thicknesses , chemical analyses of water from selected wells, and water levels in observation wells. In the first phase, 77 wells and 4 potential point sources were sampled for dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Four wells and several potential point sources of insecticides and herbicides were sampled for insecticides and herbicides. Fourteen wells and four potential organic sources were sampled for volatile and semivolatile organic compounds. \n\nThe results of the DOC analyses indicate no high level (>20 mg/L DOC) organic contamination of ground water. The only detectable insecticide or herbicide was a DDT concentration of 10 parts per trillion (0.01 microgram per liter) in one observation well. \n\nThe volatile and semivolatile analyses do not indicate the presence of hazardous organic contaminants in significant amounts (>10 micrograms per liter) in the samples taken. \n\nDue to the lack of any significant organic ground-water contamination in this reconnaissance survey, the second phase of the study, which was to follow up the first phase by additional sampling of any contaminated wells, was canceled.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Idaho Falls, ID","doi":"10.3133/wri8215","collaboration":"Prepared on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy","usgsCitation":"Leenheer, J.A., and Bagby, J.C., 1982, Organic solutes in ground water at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-15, iv, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8215.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p.","numberOfPages":"47","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287226,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0015/report.pdf"},{"id":287227,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0015/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -113.201447,43.348438 ], [ -113.201447,43.903479 ], [ -112.555754,43.903479 ], [ -112.555754,43.348438 ], [ -113.201447,43.348438 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae5e4b07f02db68ad0a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leenheer, Jerry A.","contributorId":72420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leenheer","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":229921,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bagby, Jefferson C.","contributorId":9696,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bagby","given":"Jefferson","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":229920,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Litter fall was collected monthly from nets located in 16 study plots. The plots represented five forest types in the swamp and levee areas of the Apalachicola River flood plain. Forty-three species of trees, vines, and other plants contributed to the total litter fall, but over 90 percent of the leaf material originated from 12 species. Nonleaf material comprised 42 percent of the total litter fall. Average litter fall was determined to be 800 grams per square meter per year, resulting in an annual deposition of 360,000 metric tons of organic material in the 454-square-kilometer flood plain.

The levee communities have lower tree biomass but higher tree diversity than swamp communities. The levee vegetation, with lower tree biomass, produces slightly more litter fall per ground surface area than the swamp vegetation. The swamps are dominated by three genera: tupelo (Nyssa), cypress (Taxodium), and ash (Fraxinus). These genera account for over 50 percent of the total leaf fall in the flood plain but they are the least productive, on a weight-per-biomass basis, of any of the 12 major leaf producers.

Decomposition rates of leaves from five common flood-plain tree species were measured using a standard leaf-bag technique. Leaf decomposition was highly species-dependent. Tupelo (Nyssa spp.) and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) leaves decomposed completely in 6 months when flooded by river water. Leaves of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) and diamond-leaf oak (Quercus laurifolia) were much more resistant. Water hickory (Carya aquatica) leaves showed intermediate decomposition rates. Decomposition of all species was greatly reduced in dry environments. Carbon and biomass loss rates from the leaves were nearly linear over a 6-month period, but nitrogen and phosphorus leaching was nearly complete within 1 month. Much of the organic substance may be recycled in the forest ecosystem, but annual flooding of the river provides an important mechanism for mobilization of the litter-fall products.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82252","usgsCitation":"Elder, J.F., and Cairns, D.J., 1982, Production and decomposition of forest litter The water-level change from April 1981 to April 1982, showed a general decline, but the water-level change from September 1981 to April 1982 showed some recovery. This report provides a better understanding about the application of AVM instrumentation to streamflow measurment. Operational U.S. Geological Survey systems have proven that AVM equipment is accurate and dependable. AVM equipment has no practical upper limit of measureable velocity if sonic transducers are securely placed and adequately protected, and will measure velocitites as low as 0.1 meter per second which is normally less than the threshold level for mechanical or head-loss meters. In some situations the performance of AVM equipment may be degraded by multipath interference, signal bending, signal attenuation, and variable streamline orientation. Smaller, less-expensive, more conveniently operable microprocessor equipment is now available which should increase use of AVM systems in streamflow applications. This approach has the advantages of procedural simplicity and ready availability of input data; consequently, it has potential utility as a screening tool in the early stages of the reservoir planning process.

Habitat suitability is determined on the basis of a composite score for five \"primary\" reservoir attributes (temperature, turbidity, nonliving cover, drawdown, and shallow cove frequency). The va 1ue of each primary reservoi r attribute is determined from one or more \"secondary\" attributes, which are easily measured variables. Secondary attributes (for example, length of growing season or mean July air temperature) can be directly obtained, prior to construction, from published documents, maps, reservoir plans, and on-site inspections of the proposed reservoir basin.

Evaluation criteria and ratings are presented for rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), white sucker (Catostomus commersonii), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and black crappie (PomoxTS nigromaculatus). These ratings were derived from literature reviews and from persona 1 experi ence and knowl edge of the authors; however, the system is easily adaptable to change upon further review, differences of opinion by experts, or evaluation of test results under diverse conditions.

This technique can be used to evaluate the suitability of a proposed reservoir for different species and to compare the outcomes of alternative construction plans.
