Transmissivities in the aquifer range from about 0.13 million to 11 million feet squared per day and ground-water velocities exceed 60 feet per day in some areas. The water-table gradient ranges from about 2 feet per mile to more than 60 feet per mile, and during a year the water table fluctuates on the order of 5 to 10 feet. For most of the aquifer the water table is between 40 and 400 feet below land surface. The aquifer is recharged and discharged at an average rate of about 1,320 cubic feet per second. \r\n\r\nWater is presently (1976) pumped from the aquifer at an average rate of about 239 cubic feet per second for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Most of this is discharged to the Spokane River, lost to evapotranspiration, or applied to the land surface with little or no change in quality. However, about 34 cubic feet per second becomes waste water generated by domestic and industrial activities and is returned to the aquifer by percolation from cesspools and drain fields. \r\n\r\nThe quality of water in the aquifer is generally good. Less than one-half of 1 percent of the 3,300 analyses available exceeded the maximum contaminant levels specified in the National Interim Primary (or Proposed Secondary) Drinking Water Regulations (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1975) for constituents which may be hazardous to health. Of the 6,300 analyses for constituents considered detrimental to the esthetic quality of water, about 1.4 percent have yielded values which exceeded the recommended levels. \r\n\r\nAlternative water sources for the area supplied by the aquifer are the Spokane and Little Spokane Rivers, lakes adjacent to the aquifer, and other aquifers. All of these potential sources are less desirable than the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie aquifer because of insufficient supplies, poor water quality, and (or) remoteness from the areas of need.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77829","usgsCitation":"Drost, B., and Seitz, H.R., 1977, Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie aquifer, Washington and Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-829, Report: vi, 79 p.; 10 Plates: 27.05 x 21.04 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77829.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 79 p.; 10 Plates: 27.05 x 21.04 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":36222,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36221,"rank":12,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36220,"rank":11,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36219,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36218,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36217,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36216,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36215,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36214,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36213,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36212,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141127,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0829/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":414314,"rank":13,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14541.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho, Washington","otherGeospatial":"Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie aquifer","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -117.583,\n 48.083\n ],\n [\n -117.583,\n 47.583\n ],\n [\n -116.5,\n 47.583\n ],\n [\n -116.5,\n 48.083\n ],\n [\n -117.583,\n 48.083\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b02e4b07f02db698bfc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Drost, B. The network is used to catalog the thousands of earthquakes that occur each year and to provide the data needed for detailed studies of earthquake mechanisms, deep Earth structure, and tectonic processes. To be useful for seismic studies, new technology must be applied on a global scale. During the past two decades, there has been notable success in meeting this objective. Progesterone and estrogen were measured by radioimmunoassay. Progesterone levels during the months of December through February were similar for pregnant and nonpregnant animals (3.98 ± 0.57 vs. 5.50 ± 0.82 ng/ml, x̄ ± S.E., N.S., t = 1.51). The pregnant animals had higher progesterone levels during the March through May period (4.61 ± 0.44 vs. 1.94 ± 0.85, P<0.01). Progesterone levels during the months of June to early November, i.e., anestrus, were low and similar for lactating and nonlactating animals. Estrogen levels did not change during the year except for the period just before parturition in the pregnant does when estrogen levels were dramatically elevated (178 ± 29 pg/ml). Two nonpregnant adult does were sampled every 5 days from late January through early March. Progesterone levels exhibited a cyclic pattern of about 28 days duration. Estrogen levels showed no distinct pattern but tended to be inversely related to progesterone. These data suggest that 1) deer exhibit estrous cycles of about 25 to 30 days in length, 2) that estrous cycles recurred in nonpregnant does from November through early March, 3) that progesterone levels are similar for pregnancy and the luteal phase of the estrous cycle and 4) that late pregnancy is characterized by high estrogen levels as compared to early pregnancy and the estrous cycle.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1095/biolreprod16.3.340","usgsCitation":"Plotka, E., Seal, U., Schmoller, G., Karns, P.D., and Keenlyne, K., 1977, Reproductive steroids in the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus borealis). The epicenter of this earthquake was just west of the park, about 48 km northwest of the Upper Geyser Basin. No earthquake of comparable intensity had jarred the geyser basins in historic times. More hydrothermal changes occurred in response to this disturbance than during the previous 90 years of the park's history.

During the first few days after the earthquake, a reconnaissance was made of most of the thermal features in the Firehole River geyser basins (fig. 1). Early results showed that at least 289 springs had erupted as geysers, and, of these, 160 were springs with no previous record of eruption (Marler, 1964). Some previously obscure springs had erupted very powerfully, and large pieces of sinter were strewn about their craters.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Marler, G.D., and White, D.E., 1977, Evolution of Seismic Geyser, Yellowstone National Park: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 9, no. 2, p. 21-25.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"21","endPage":"25","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":365585,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70169244/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":319273,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70169244/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Yellowstone National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.85479736328125,\n              44.4803403652934\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.83694458007811,\n              44.4803403652934\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.82870483398436,\n              44.46319080919909\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.84999084472656,\n              44.464170919586834\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.85891723632812,\n              44.471031231561845\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.85479736328125,\n              44.4803403652934\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56f3be41e4b0f59b85e02e81","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marler, George D.","contributorId":216968,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Marler","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":623383,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"White, Donald E.","contributorId":76787,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":623384,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Landslides associated with earthquakes may cause as much damage as the initial ground shaking. They may also occur long after the earthquake.
\n
Some of the major earthquakes that have occurred during the past 15 years demonstrate the hazards of seismically triggered landslides. THe Hebgen Lake, Mont., earthquake of 1959 triggered a very large landslide (fig. 1) that killed and injured many people, formed a temporary lake, and blocked travel in the area. The Anchorage, Alaska, earthquake of 1964 triggered extensive subaerial (fig 2.) and submarine landslides; tsunamis (seismic sea waves) generated by the submarine landslides caused extensive damage and many fatalities in coastal areas. The earthquake in western Peru in 1970 triggered a massive debris avalanche (fig. 3) that destroyed the cities of Yungay and Ranrahirca; it probably caused about one-half of the 38,000 fatalities attributed to the earthquake. The San Fernando, Calif., earthquake of February 9, 1971, triggered more than 6000 individual landslides, most of which were small (fig. 4), in the surrounding upland areas. Fortunately, only a few of them damaged manmade structures because residential and industrial development had been restricted almost wholly to the relatively flat floor of the San Fernando Valley.
\n
Each of the major earthquakes described above had magnitudes greater than 6.5. Although smaller earthquakes may cause less damage to manmade structures by ground shaking, they are capable of triggering slope failures, especially renewed movements of old, marginally stable landslide deposits (fig. 5), in hillside areas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Nilsen, T.H., 1977, Landslides: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 9, no. 2, p. 27-33.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"27","endPage":"33","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":319289,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"9","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56f3be44e4b0f59b85e02ea3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nilsen, T. Emphasis was placed upon those variations having periods between 5 min and 4 hr for a selection of magnetically quiet, average, and active days in 1965. The power spectral density at the equator was about ten times that the near 30?? latitude. The initial manifestation of the equatorial electrojet as evidenced by the east-west alignment of the horizontal field or the change in vertical amplitudes occurred below about 20?? latitude. Induced current effects upon the vertical component from which the Earth conductivity might be inferred could best be obtained at times and latitudes unaffected by the electrojet current. Values of about 1.6 ?? 103 mhos/m for an effective skin depth of 500-600 km were determined. The spectral amplitudes increased linearly with geomagnetic activity index, Ap. The spectral slope had a similar behavior at all latitudes. The slope changed systematically with Ap-index and showed a diurnal variation, centered on local noon, that changed form with geomagnetic activity.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0021-9169(77)90031-9","issn":"00219169","usgsCitation":"Campbell, W., 1977, Spectral characteristics of geomagnetic field variations at low and equatorial latitudes: Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, v. 39, no. 9-10, p. 1217-1227, https://doi.org/10.1016/0021-9169(77)90031-9.","startPage":"1217","endPage":"1227","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":268035,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0021-9169(77)90031-9"},{"id":219233,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"39","issue":"9-10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9539e4b08c986b31adee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Campbell, W.H.","contributorId":30749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Campbell","given":"W.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358853,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The decline began in the northern part of the lake and spread progressively southward. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the nonnative alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), by interfering with perch reproduction, was the primary cause of the decline. The alewife was first reported in northeastern Lake Michigan in 1949, and had become extremely abundant throughout the lake before an enormous die-off in 1967 reduced its numbers by an estimated 70%. An intensive fishery hastened the decline of perch. In most areas the decline was immediately preceded by a period of conspicuously high commercial production. This high production appears to have been related in part to increased growth rates of perch resulting from much lower density of younger fish. A sport fishery for perch in shallow water collapsed a few years before the species declined in abundance. The most logical explanation is that heavy concentrations of alewives physically displaced the perch from nearshore areas. Although perch populations increased in some areas in the 1970s, a full recovery is unlikely unless alewife numbers are further reduced.
","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing","doi":"10.1139/f77-248","usgsCitation":"Wells, L., 1977, Changes in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) populations of Lake Michigan, 1954-75: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 34, no. 10, p. 1821-1829, https://doi.org/10.1139/f77-248.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1821","endPage":"1829","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133271,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"34","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e68d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wells, LaRue","contributorId":75476,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wells","given":"LaRue","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308590,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Experiments using ferric oxalate and cadmium(II) in HCl confirm excellent agreement with theory. Experimental peak heights and peak widths are found to be within 2% of calculated results. An example of trace analysis using square wave voltammetry at the DME is presented. Channel-control conditions usually exist during T-year discharges in natural rigid-boundary channels and, therefore, the simplified technique probably would be applicable for flood-inundation studies for many natural rigid-boundary channels. The technique requires that the T-year discharge for a reach of interest be known or readily available; also, a channel-shape factor, a width at a reference altitude, a channel-bottom slope (or a water-surface slope), and the Manning's roughness factor, n, must be estimated or determined at representative sections having channel-control conditions. The standard error of estimate for depths determined according to the simplified technique is not known; however, it is probably 25-30 percent. In comparison, the standard error of estimate for the depths determined according to the step-backwater procedure and to guidelines and specifications for flood-insurance studies of the Federal Insurance Administration is about 23 percent.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7783","usgsCitation":"Burkham, D., 1977, A technique for determining depths for T-year discharges in rigid-boundary channels: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 77-83, iv, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7783.","productDescription":"iv, 38 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":358900,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0083/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158315,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0083/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a5c2b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burkham, D. Techniques are described for searching, finding, and marking nests in a typical area of grassland.During nine nesting seasons, 7,894 nests representing 32 species were found by searching fields with cable-chain drags. Only 2% of the nests were damaged while searching; most of this damage was caused by the searcher or the vehicle, and not by the drag.The rate of nest abandonment caused by cable-chain searching was estimated to be less than 1%. Reflushing efficiency ranged from 25% for green-winged teal (Anas crecca) to 100% for shorebirds. Other uses of the cable-chain drag are also discussed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","usgsCitation":"Higgins, K., Kirsch, L., Duebbert, H., and Klett, A., 1977, Construction and operation of cable-chain drag for nest searches: Wildlife Leaflet 512, 15 p.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"0","endPage":"14","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198726,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a2f1f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Higgins, K.F.","contributorId":55767,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Higgins","given":"K.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325113,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kirsch, L.M.","contributorId":43701,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kirsch","given":"L.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325112,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Duebbert, Harold F.","contributorId":11544,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Duebbert","given":"Harold F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325110,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Klett, A.","contributorId":30321,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Klett","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325111,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
