In 1811-12, a series of disastrous earthquakes struck the southeast Missouri region (see \"The Mississippi Valley earthquakes of 1811 and 1812\" by Otto W. Nuttli in the Earthquake Information Bulletin, March-April 1974). Earthquake activity continues in the area at present, showing that the seismic hazard is still there.

We know little about the relationship between seismicity and the tectonic character of this region. The hypocenters of earthquakes are scattered. The near-surface features themselves are obscured by the several hundred feet alluvium and other quaternary sediments of the Mississippi embayment. No active faults have been mapped in the area.

Supported by the U.S Geological Survey, my colleagues Mark Kramer, Gerard Fischer, Stephen Schaefer, Sean Morrissey, and I have recently established a microearthquake network in the New Madrid seismic zone. The network has been in operation for only 21 months, yet we have already been able to show, from the hypocenters located so far, that earthquakes in this region occur along linear zones, which we believe corespond to seismically active faults.

Robbins Nest is located on the fall line one-half mile below Rocky Gorge Reservoir. During the fall migration, about 8 nets are run on the upper part of the 3 acres (edge of the lawn, the garden, under the Virginia Pines, and the upper edge of the mature oak woods that drop 80 feet to the Patuxent River). Foul weather on weekends, combined with commitments away from home, severely restricted this season's operation. August banding was limited to the weekend of the 23-24th. In September, all-day netting was conducted on the 6-7th and 20-21st, and this was supplemented with before- and after-work banding on 16 other days. October banding also was limited to 4 whole days and parts of 16 others.

The Rb\"singleSr, Sm\"singleNd, and U\"singlePb systematics of the eucrite Pasamonte have been studied in order to investigate the relative susceptibility of the different systems to post-crystallization events and to determine the age and history of the meteorite. The Rb\"singleSr and238U-206Pb data of mineral separates do not define an isochron but the Sm\"singleNd data define an internal isochron which corresponds to the formation age of4.58 ± 0.12b.y. (109 years). The207Pb-206Pb data of mineral separates define an apparent age of4.53 ± 0.03b.y., however we conclude that this age, while in agreement with the Sm\"singleNd age, is not strictly valid since the U\"singlePb data indicate at least three stages of evolution. The U\"singlePb data indicate that the parent body of the meteorite experienced brecciation shortly after the formation of the parent body surface (∼4.2–4.45b.y. ago) and a recent disturbance (collision?)6 ± 30m.y. ago. The latter age is within the range of cosmic ray exposure ages for achondrites.

The hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer is estimated to range from 1 to 130 feet per day, based on lithology and physical properties. The yield of wells penetrating this aquifer ranges from 100 to more than 1,000 gallons per minute. Water samples were collected from different depths throughout the county and analyzed for chemical constituents. Stiff diagrams illustrate the changes in types of water by depth and area. Water of suitable quality is in the eastern parts of the county. In this area the aquifer is the thickest and most permeable. The concentration of chemical constituents in the water increase in a westerly direction. The water in the western parts of the county is unsuitable for most purposes. Ozone and chlorine inactivation curves were determined in three water types at 20 °C for the destruction of the fish pathogens Aeromonas salmonicida, the etiologic agent of furunculosis, and the enteric redmouth bacterium (ERM). In phosphate-buffered distilled water, 0.01 mg/ℓ ozone inactivated 103 cells/ml of ERM and A. salmonicida in 1/2 and 10 min, respectively. Chlorine at this concentration had little effect on either pathogen and a residual of at least 0.05 mg/ℓ was needed to achieve a complete kill within a 10-min contact time. In soft lake water (30 mg/ℓ as CaCO3) a chlorine residual of 0.1 mg/ℓ rapidly \"\" inactivated A. salmonicida and ERM but in hard water (120 mg/ℓ) A. salmonicida was more resistant and 0.2 mg/ℓ chlorine was required. Ozonation of the two lake waters at 90 mg O3∙h−1∙ℓ−1 (equivalent to a 0.01 mg/ℓ residual in ozone demand-free water) was required to destroy both pathogens within 10 min.In untreated soft lake water 103 cells/ml of A. salmonicida survived only 2 days, while the ERM bacterium (103 cells/ml) survived even after 20 day s in soft and hard untreated lake waters.

Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) collected in 1973 at 51 sites throughout the continental United States were analyzed for mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and selenium. All samples contained detectable levels of these elements. In general, residues were low: mercury residues ranged from <0.01 to 0.20 ppm: lead, from <0.10 10 3.20 ppm: cadmium, from <0.05 to 0.20 ppm: arsenic, from <0.05 to 1.40 ppm: and selenium, from 0.10 to 1.10 ppm. There was a significant overall decline in mercury and lead residues in starlings since 1971, and a significant increase in arsenic residues. Lead residues were significantly higher in starlings from urban areas than from rural areas.

Three methods for the extraction of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) neutral dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), boiling tris buffer, and butanol-octanol extraction were equally effective on the alga Chlorella vulgwia. Dilution of extracted ATP samples was linear. Filtration of different volumes of samples resulted in proportional values for ATP in the extracts. Measurement of activity by either peak height or integration of the area under the peak were equally sensitive and reproducible. The assay of ATP sample was inhibited by mercuric chloride > cadmium chloride > calcium chloride > potassium or sodium phosphate, and by high concentrations of the extractant DMSO. Analysis of ATP in aquatic environments led to the problem of transferring a sample from the field to the laboratory without obtaining a change in ATP concentration. Membrane filtration of the sample followed by chilling at 4°C, slow freezing at 20° C, or freezing on dry ice were ineffective in maintaining a constant level of ATP. Chilling caused a marked increase in ATP, whereas slow freezing caused a significant loss of ATP. Freezing on dry ice was variable but generally resulted in large losses of ATP. Quick freezing by immersion of filter and algae in liquid nitrogen and storage on dry ice maintained a constant ATP level. Field extraction of the ATP followed by quick freezing in an acetone-dry-ice bath maintained the ATP in a convenient and stable form.

The heat capacities of low albite and analbite, NaAlSi3O8, and of microcline and high sanidine, KAlSi3Og, have been measured from 15 to 375 K using an adiabatic calorimeter. Tables of the thermodynamic functions C°p, (H°T–H°0)/T, (G°T–H°0)/T, and S°T–S°0 are presented for these four feldspars from 0 to 370 K. At 298.15 K (25.0°C) the values for S°T S°0 for low albite, analbite, microcline, and high sanidine are 207.4±0.4, 207.7±0.4, 214.2±0.4, and 214.2±0.4 J/(mol.K), respectively.

The effect of the state of Al/Si order upon the heat capacity is quite small. The difference, ΔC°p, between albite-analbite and microcline-sanidine never exceeds 0.5 percent at temperatures below 400 K.

With the exception of microcline, the heat capacities of these four feldspars follow a smooth S-shaped curve between 15 and 375 K, with no indication of transitions or anomalous behavior. Above 250 K, the heat capacity of microcline shows a form of thermal hysteresis. In the temperature range 250 to 375 K, the heat capacity of microcline is dependent upon its past thermal history. At 375 K, microcline which had been cooled to 230 K before the measurement of C°p has a heat capacity greater by approximately 1.2 percent than microcline which had not been previously cooled below 295 K. After a day of annealing at about 300 K, C°p of the previously cooled microcline decreases to essentially the same value as the microcline which had never been at a temperature below 300 K.

Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica) were fed 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 p.p.m. Hg as mercuric chloride (HgCl2) from the time of hatching up to the age of 1 year. None of the birds manifested any gross signs of mercury poisoning. Food consumption, growth rate, and weight maintenance were unaffected. Initial oviposition tended to occur at a younger age as dietary mercuric chloride increased, e.g., the median age at which egg laying began among hens fed 32 p.p.m. Hg was 6 days younger than for controls. The average rate of egg production was positively related to the concentration of mercuric chloride with the most pronounced differences between treatments occurring among young (<9-week-old) hens. Beyond 9 weeks of age egg production was more uniform among the treatments, but even after 1 year hens on 32 p.p.m. Hg were laying an average of 13.5% more eggs than controls. Rate of egg fertilization was generally depressed for all Hg-treatments above 4 p.p.m. Hatchability of fertilized eggs and eggshell thickness appeared unaffected by mercuric chloride.

This report is the thirteenth in a series of annual reports that describe ground-water conditions in Utah. Reports in this series, prepared cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources, provide data to enable interested parties to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.

This report, like the others (see references, p. 16), contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. Supplementary data such as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration are included in reports of this series only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.

This report includes individual discussions of selected major areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1975. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the period spring 1975 to spring 1976. Much of the data used in this report were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water Rights, Utah Department of Natural Resources.
