A cruise on the- DESV STARELLA was conducted between October 23. 1979, and November 8, 1979, by the U.S. Geologic.al Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United Kingdom's Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS). The purpose of the study was to gain an overview of the morphology of large areas of the Continental Slope and upper Continental Rise off the eastern ·united States. Sidescan-sonar and single-channel seismic-reflection data were collected along the tracklines. The ship's position. was monitored using LORAN_C and satellite navigation techniques.
The sidescan data were collected using the !OS-developed Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic, Mark II (GLORIA II) system. GLORIA was operated at either a 20-second or 40-second sweep, giving maximum slant-range distances of 15 or 30 kilometers, respectively, to each side of the towed fish. The sidescan data were collected on graphic recorders and analog tapes. The tapes were played onto photographic paper in a facsimile machine; then these prints were photographically stretched to produce approximately isometric images .. The images were not corrected for slant-range distortion. Mosaics at a scale of 1:250,000 (Mercator projection) were made from the photographic images.
The seismic· data consist of 40-in3 airgun and 10-kHz echo-sounder profiles. The airgun data were recorded on EPC recorders at both 8- and 4- second sweep rates. The 10-kHz echo-sounder data were recorded on a wet-paper recorder at a 2-second sweep rate.
Approximately 4,820 km of seismic and sonar-data wera collected from four areas of interest and along the lines connecting those areas. Area 1 includes the Continental Slope and upper Rise seaward of Georges Bank, between Northeast Channel and Alvin Canyon. Numerous lines were run here, resulting in approximately 2,500 km of seismic data and complete and overlapping GLORIA coverage of the area. A similar survey, consisting of approximately 1 2 200 km of trackline, was run in area 2, which includes the Continental Slope and upper Rise seaward of the middle Atlantic states between Hudson Canyon and Baltimore Canyon. A single line, 250 km long, was run through area 3 along the base of the Continental Slope from Cape Hatteras to latitude 33°N. off North and South Carolina. Two parallel lines, totaling 870 km, were run through area 4 along the Blake Escarpment, from the Blake Spur south to latitude 27°40'N. One line was run along the top of the escarpment and the other was run along the base of the escarpment.
All the data can be studied at the U.S. Geological Survey offices in Woods Hole, MA 02543. Microfilm copies of the sidescan-monitor record as well as the airgun and 10-kHz profiles can be purchased only from the National Geophysical Data Center, NOAA, Code E64, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80303 (303/497-6338). Photographic copies of the GLORIA mosaics can also be obtained only from this address.

type of instrument, written in BASIC, are presented. The BASIC programs offer several advantages over previously available FORTRAN programs. They can be executed on a desk-top microcomputer at or near the field site, allowing the investigator to assess the quality of the data and make decisions on the need for additional testing while the crew is still in the field. These estimates are from the frequency curves defined from the streamflow records. Short-term records for 66 sites were extended on the basis of long-term climatic records and a rainfall-runoff model. These frequency curves may provide the best estimates of floods at these gaged sites. Analyses of flood-frequency information from these gaged sites have been the basis for techniques (published previously) used in estimating flood magnitude and frequency at ungaged sites in South Dakota.
This report supplements flood-frequency information published earlier. It presents: Annual peak discharges colected during a 25-year period at 124 crest-stage partial-record stations; maximum observed and unit discharges determined for 124 crest-stage and 120 continuous-record gaging stations; updated flood-frequency curves for 120 crest-stage gages; a documentation of analytical procedures used; and a summary of the small-streams flood-peak data collection program in the State from 1955 to 1981. Maximum flood peaks determined at 244 partial- and continuous-record gaging stations and at 52 miscellaneous sites are compared with regional flood relationships.

Clays Ferry Formation contain an abundant and diversified ostracode fauna. More than 10,000 specimens belonging to 39 genera and 53 species have been found in 73 collections made by members of the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Kentucky Geological Survey between 1961 and 1970. Five of the genera and 17 of the species are new. New taxa include the genera Gephyropsis, Ningulella, Phelobythocypris, Quasibollia, and Uninodobolba and the following species: Americoncha dubia, Ballardina millersburgia, Brevidorsa strodescreekensis, Ceratopsis asymme , trica C. fimbriata, Ctenobolbina ventrispinifera, Cystomatochilina reticulotiara, Easchmidtella sinuidorsata, Gephyropsis trachyreticulata, Jonesella gonyloba, Laccoprimitia claysferryensis, L. cryptomorphologica, Leperditella? perplexa, Ningulella paupera, Parenthatia sadievillensis, Silenis kentuckyensis, and Uninodobolba franklinensis. In addition, a new species, Quasibollia copelandi, is described from the Middle Ordovician of Ontario. The type specimens of ostracodes previously described from these formations but not represented in the recent collections are redescribed and refigured. The genus Warthinia Spivey, 1939, is reinstated for Ordovician bolliids with two to four nodes, and the genus Ceratopsis Ulrich, 1894, is reviewed with new figures of all known North American species of the genus. \r\n\r\nForty-four collections included enough specimens to warrant quantitative analysis. The temporal and spatial distribution of the genera were defined by using Q-mode cluster analysis based on Sorensen's quantified coefficient of association. The resulting phenogram indicated the existence of eight clusters; these clusters were characterized by calculation of constancy and fidelity measures for each of the variables. Generic diversity, compound generic diversity, and lithologic associations were scanned in an attempt to delineate the paleoecologic regime of each cluster. In general, a trend can be seen in which the higher diversity Phelobythocypris-dominated clusters are found in the muddier rocks and less diverse, highly Ceratopsisdominated clusters in the predominantly carbonate members. An exception to this generalization is found in the limestones of the Strodes Creek Member of the Lexington Limestone which has the highest ostracode diversity. However, the Strodes Creek is found entirely within the confines of the muddy Millersburg Member of the Lexington and is believed to represent a similar environment. Diversity differences in these ostracode associations are thought to be controlled mainly by substrate and kinetic energy level. About 100 surface-rock samples, three borehole gamma-gamma logs, and one borehole gravity study provide excellent density control. A linear increase in density of 0.26 g/cm3 per km is indicated in the thick tuff sequences. This steady increase of density within the tuff sequences makes the density contrast across the basal contact of the tuff the only strong source of gravity fluctuations. Isostatic and 2.0-g/cm3 Bouguer corrections were applied to the observed gravity values to remove deep-crust-related regional gradients and topographic effects, respectively. The resulting residual-gravity plot shows significant gravity anomalies that correlate closely with the structures inferred from drill-hole and surface geologic studies.
Gravity highs over the three Paleozoic rock outcrops within the study area--Bare Mountain, the Calico Hills, and the Striped Hills--served as reference points for the gravity models. The Bare Mountain gravity high, which peaks at 48 mGal, connects with a larger gravity high over the Funeral Mountains to the south; together, these highs may result from a continuous block of mildly metamorphosed Precambrian and Paleozoic rocks stretching from the east edge of Death Valley to Bare Mountain. The Calico Hills gravity high appears more likely to originate from a northeast-trending remanent topographic high of buried Paleozoic rocks rather than from an isolated structural dome. This buried ridge may extend southwestward beneath Busted Butte, 5 km southeast of the proposed repository, where 2 1/2- and 3dimensional modeling indicates that the pre-Cenozoic rocks may be less than 1,000 m deep.
At least 3,000 m of tuff fills a large steep-sided depression in the prevolcanic rocks beneath Yucca Mountain and Crater Flat. The gravity low and thick tuff section probably lie within a large collapse area comprising the Crater Flat-Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon caldera complexes. Gravity lows in Crater Flat itself are thought to coincide with the source areas of the Prow Pass Member, the Bullfrog Member, and the unnamed member of the Crater Flat Tuff. Southward extension of the broad gravity low associated with Crater Flat into the Amargosa Desert is evidence for sector graben-type collapse segments related to Timber Mountain caldera and superimposed on the other structures within Crater Flat.
