Ten vyolves (<i>Canis lupus</i>) from 7 packs in the same area were radiotracked before and/or during the same period (703 locations). Deer had winter ranges averaging 26.4 ha. Spring migration took place from 26 March to 23 April and was related to loss of snow cover. Deer generally migrated ENE in straight-line distances of 10.0 to 38.0 km to summer ranges. Two fawns did not migrate. Arrival on summer ranges was between 19 April and 18 May, and summer ranges varied from 48.1 to 410.4 ha. Migration back to the same winter yards took place in early December, coincident with snow accumulation and low temperatures. Social grouping appeared strongest during migration and winter yarding. Survival of the radio-tagged deer was studied through 1 May 1975. Four deer were killed by wolves, one was poached, and one drowned. Mean age of the captured deer was 5.4 years and estimated minimum survival after capture was 2.6 years, giving an estimated total minimum survival of 8.0 years. This unusually high survival rate appeared to be related to the fact that both winter and summer ranges of these deer were situated along wolf-pack territory edges rather than in centers. In addition, most summer ranges of the radio-tagged deer were along major waterways where the deer could escape wolves.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799944","usgsCitation":"Hoskinson, R., and Mech, L., 1976, White-tailed deer migration and its role in wolf predation: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 40, no. 3, p. 429-441, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799944.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"429","endPage":"441","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194207,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"40","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db69917c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoskinson, R.L.","contributorId":77618,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoskinson","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333140,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mech, L.D. 0000-0003-3944-7769","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3944-7769","contributorId":75466,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Mech","given":"L.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333139,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Observations by a Z-man team using walkie-talkies revealed that breeding robins obtained essentially all food for themselves and nestlings from unsprayed areas adjacent to the orchards. Invertebrate trapping in sprayed and unsprayed areas showed that these food items were 5 or 6 times more abundant in unsprayed habitat. Worms forced to live in sprayed orchard soil displayed significantly greater mortality than controls. Mean robin clutch sizes in the study orchards were lower than those reported for robins in other studies, perhaps because of food shortage and/or increased foraging distances. Levels of DDT and its analogs in food items from robin foraging areas did not exceed 8 ppm wet weight basis. From late April to July, adult robins showed small but significant increases in DDE levels in all tissues examined, as well as an increase in dieldrin in brains. Pesticides sprayed on the farm had no direct demonstrable adverse effects on the robins; productivity was high and adult mortality low. The situation was in large measure fortuitous, since any changes in orchard management practices which resulted in the presence or availability of invertebrates under orchard trees would be expected to result in robin mortality and/or reduced breeding success.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Johnson, E., Mack, G., and Thompson, D., 1976, The effects of orchard pesticide applications on breeding robins: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 88, no. 1, p. 16-35.","productDescription":"16-35","startPage":"16","endPage":"35","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":18121,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v088n01/p0016-p0035.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":199186,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"88","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699d39","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, E.V.","contributorId":39080,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"E.V.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333661,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mack, G.L.","contributorId":36654,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mack","given":"G.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Thompson, D.Q.","contributorId":50991,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"D.Q.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333662,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Livers, kidneys, blood, wingbones, and eggs were analyzed for lead by atomic absorption. Necropsy of sacrificed ducks failed to reveal any of the tissue lesions usually associated with lead poisoning in waterfowl. Lead levels in ducks given all-lead shot averaged about twice those in ducks given lead-iron shot, reflecting the amount of lead in the two types of shot. Lead in the blood of ducks dosed with all-lead shot averaged 0.64 ppm, and 0.28 ppm in ducks given lead-iron shot. Lead residues in livers and kidneys of females given all-lead shot were significantly higher than in males. In both dosed groups, lead levels in wingbones of females were about 10 times those in males, and were significantly correlated with the number of eggs laid after dosage. Lead levels in contents and shells of eggs laid by hens dosed with all-lead shot were about twice those in eggs laid by hens dosed with lead-iron shot. Eggshells were found to best reflect levels of lead in the blood. Our results indicate that mallards maintained on a balanced diet and dosed with one lead shot may not accumulate extremely high lead levels in the liver and kidney. However, extremely high lead deposition may result in the bone of laying hens after ingesting sublethal amounts of lead shot as a result of mobilization of calcium from the bone during eggshell formation.","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF01685887","usgsCitation":"Finley, M.T., Dieter, M.P., and Locke, L.N., 1976, Lead in tissues of mallard ducks dosed with two types of lead shot: Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, v. 16, no. 3, p. 261-269, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01685887.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"261","endPage":"269","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198404,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"16","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2013-08-31","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4893e4b07f02db520a30","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Finley, M. Mercury in the eggs of treated hens averaged 0.86 ppm. Hens fed 0.5 ppm mercury made less efficient use of feed and laid a greater percentage of eggs outside nestboxes compared with controls. Hens fed mercury also produced fewer 1-week-old ducklings than did controls. There were no significant differences between controls and ducklings from parents fed 0.5 ppm mercury in approach responses to tape-recorded maternal calls, in avoidance of a frightening stimulus, or in open-field behavior. For 2 weeks after dosage, lead in blood of ducks given an all-lead shot was fourfold higher than in those dosed with lead-iron shot. At 3 and 4 weeks, the differences in lead residues were directly proportional to lead content of the shots. ALAD activities measured at these intervals were inversely correlated (P < 0.01) with the concentration of lead in the blood, suggesting that biochemical responses to the two types of shot were dependent upon the quantity of lead present.","largerWorkTitle":"","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0013-9351(76)90032-3","usgsCitation":"Finley, M.T., Dieter, M.P., and Locke, L.N., 1976, Delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase: Inhibition in ducks dosed with lead shot: Environmental Research, v. 12, no. 2, p. 243-249, https://doi.org/10.1016/0013-9351(76)90032-3.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"243","endPage":"249","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":199426,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"12","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab2e4b07f02db66f3a9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Finley, M. The collection included 43 big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), 43 little brown brown bats (Myotis lucifugus), and 33 eastern pipistrelles (Pipistrellus subflavus). The bats were collected from Round Top Mountain, Washington Co., Md.; Trout Cave, Pendleton Co., W. Va.; Montpelier Barn, Prince Georges Co., Md. Residues of sigmaDDT were highest in carcasses of bats from Round Top Mountain, which is surrounded by apple orchards. Bats from Trout Cave had the lowest residues, a circumstance which probably reflects the absence of agriculture and industry in the area. A polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and oxychlordane were highest at Montpelier Barn. Sources of the PCB are unknown, but chlordane is used against termites and in gardening at nearby housing developments. Residues in bats from North East Methodist Church were low except for dieldrin. Among species, little brown bats usually had the highest residue concentrations in their carcasses, whereas big brown bats had the lowest. When DDE in carcass fat of all species was above 60-90 ppm, it became measurable in brain tissue. Above 60-90 ppm, DDE levels in brains rose with increasing levels in carcass lipids. Residues of the PCB tended to respond similarly. Residue levels in brains were greatest in little brown bats; the maximum level of the PCB, 7.9 Ppm, was more than twice that of DDE.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pesticides Monitoring Journal","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Clark, D.R., and Prouty, R.M., 1976, Organochlorine residues in three bat species from four localities in Maryland and West Virginia, 1973: Pesticides Monitoring Journal, v. 10, no. 2, p. 44-53.","productDescription":"44-53","startPage":"44","endPage":"53","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197004,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269758,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/26096130"}],"volume":"10","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae5e4b07f02db68a72b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Clark, D. The probability of observing a point given its right angle distance (y) from the line is generalized to an arbitrary function g(y). Given only that g(0) = 1, it is shown there are nonparametric approaches to density estimation using the observed right angle distances.  The model is then generalized to include sighting distances (r).  Let f(y I r) be the conditional distribution of right angle distance given sighting distance.  It is shown that nonparametric estimation based only on sighting distances requires we know the transformation of r given by f(0 I r).","language":"English","publisher":"International Biometric Society","doi":"10.2307/2529501","usgsCitation":"Burnham, K., and Anderson, D., 1976, Mathematical models for non-parametric inferences from line transect data: Biometrics, v. 32, no. 2, p. 325-336, https://doi.org/10.2307/2529501.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"325","endPage":"336","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194063,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a27e4b07f02db60fff7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burnham, K.P.","contributorId":63760,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burnham","given":"K.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332837,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Anderson, David R.","contributorId":8413,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"David R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332836,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

No mortality occurred, and the pathologic lesions usually associated with lead poisoning were not found. Changes in hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration did not occur. After 3 wk ducks fed 25 ppm lead exhibited a 40% inhibition of blood δ‐aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity that persisted through 12 wk exposure. After 12 wk treatment similar enzyme inhibition was present in the ducks fed 5 ppm lead. At 3 wk there was a small accumulation of lead (less than 1 ppm) in the liver and kidneys of ducks fed 25 ppm lead; no further increases occurred throughout the exposure. No significant accumulation of lead occurred in the tibiae or wing bones. Groups of ducks fed 5 and 25 ppm diets for 12 wk were placed on clean feed and examined through a 12 wk posttreatment period. After 3 wk on clean diet δ‐aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity and lead concentrations in the blood had returned to pretreatment levels. Even though lead concentrations in the blood, soft organs, and bone were low, a highly significant negative correlation between blood lead and blood enzyme activity was obtained. The trend was interrupted by World War I, the economic depression of the 1930's, and World War II.  Data are lacking for the years after World War II until 1968.  Until 1942, domesticated canaries and a few species of game birds made up most of the avian imports; the shell parakeet or budgerigar was the most commonly imported parrot.  Although the total number ofbirds imported 1968-72 was-not greatly different from the pre-depression years, the proportion of canaries, game species, and parakeets declined greatly and the variety and number of cage birds including other parrot species greatly increased.  Until 1930 most mammals imported were for laboratory use or fur farming.  After 1930 the number of imported mammals increased with the growing importance of primates, especially rhesus macaques, in research.  Since 1968 the number of mammals irnported annually has been at least 5 times greater than the previous peak of 1938, and primates have made up 87% of mammalian imports.  Information on reptiles and amphibians imported into the United States is available only for 1970 and 1971.  Turtles were the most commonly imported reptiles, frogs and toads the most commonly imported amphibians.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Banks, R., 1976, Wildlife importation into the United States, 1900-1972: Special Scientific Report  - Wildlife 200, 18.","productDescription":"18","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":202744,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":91960,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/2027/mdp.39015077575069","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f01aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Banks, R.C.","contributorId":20440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"R.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343805,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The complex is composite, consisting of (1) an older, single ring dike and two subsidiary short-arced inner dikes, and (2) a younger set of thin short-arced dikes largely inside the older ring dike. The older ring dike, composed of granodiorite-quartz monzonite, has nearly vertical walls and is elliptical in plan; its long axis (14 km) is oriented west-northwest. It was emplaced in and contains numerous fragments of gabbro. The more than 200 short-arced granitic pegmatite dikes, mainly ranging from 0.2 to 1 m in thickness, define a domal ring dike set with moderately to steeply dipping outer dikes and nearly horizontal inner dikes. The younger dikes cut both the older ring dike and the gabbro. Spatially associated with the younger dikes are bodies of fine-grained granophyre that contain stringers of granitic pegmatite. The granophyre has an Mg content similar to that of the younger ring-dike rock, but contains less K and more Fe. The older ring dike is interpreted to have been magmatically emplaced in an elliptical zone of ring fracturing in gabbro; the magma made room by stoping the denser gabbro with little assimilation. Upon a release of pressure, a set of domal fractures formed, along which volatile-rich magma was emplaced, forming the younger ring dikes. Granophyre resulted from pressure-quenching through a loss of volatiles. Residual volatiles, or volatiles that were introduced later, recrystallized parts of the granophyre and caused the formation of pegmatite stringers.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Morton, D.M., and Bard, A., 1976, Petrology of the Paloma Valley ring complex, southern California batholith: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 1, p. 83-89.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"83","endPage":"89","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314847,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":314846,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue1/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"16.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.3,\n              33\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.3,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.5,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.5,\n              33\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.3,\n              33\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"4","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a75564e4b0b28f1184d86b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Morton, D. St. Matthew Island is made up of approximately 500 m of subaerial calc-alkaline volcanic rocks ranging in composition from high-alumina basalt to rhyolite. Four K-Ar analyses of samples from this volcanic sequence give Late Cretaceous ages of 65-77 m.y., and intercalated carbonaceous tuff layers yield Cretaceous pollen assemblages. Along the northeast coast of St. Matthew Island, the volcanic rocks are intruded by granodiorite that gives an early Tertiary K-Ar age of 61 m.y. Correlations with on-land geology in northeast Siberia and marine geophysical data from the western Bering Sea strongly suggest that St. Matthew Island represents a southeastward extension of the Okhotsk-Chukotsk belt, a Cretaceous and early Tertiary volcanic arc that borders the Pacific margin of Siberia for nearly 3,000 km. The apparent continuation of this volcanic arc along the margin of the Bering shelf at least as far east as St. Matthew Island supports suggestions by Burk and by Scholl and others that in late Mesozoic time the Pacific plate margin coincided with the present Bering shelf margin and did not shift to the Aleutian trench until the end of Cretaceous or the beginning of Tertiary time.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Patton, W.W., Lanphere, M.A., Miller, T.P., and Scott, R., 1976, Age and tectonic The Darrough was supposed to consist mostly of intrusive rocks of probable Permian age. Reexamination of parts of the Darrough Felsite indicates that it is Tertiary and has no genetic affiliation to pre-Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Toiyabe Range. The Darrough constitutes an enormously thick succession of crystal-lithic tuff, tuff breccia, crystal tuff, and volcanogenic sedimentary breccia and sandstone. The tuffaceous rocks are strongly compacted where ash particles are the dominant constituent but are much less compacted where lithic fragments and crystals constitute a rigid framework. Much of the Darrough Felsite may have undergone extensive siliciflcation, probably as a postcompaction event. Contact relations of the Darrough Felsite indicate that it is younger than pre-Tertiary rocks of the southern Toiyabe Range and the Ophir pluton, here dated at 53.9 m.y. (K-Ar, biotite). Three K-Ar ages of minerals from tuff of the Darrough are 26.1, 22.7, and 22.3 m.y., suggesting a middle Tertiary age. A large dike intruding the Darrough. previously assigned a Jurassic age, gives a K-Ar-biotite age of 29.4 m.y. We tentatively interpret the Darrough Felsite to represent an accumulation of ash and breccia flows in a volcanotectonic depression.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Speed, R.C., and McKee, E., 1976, Age and origin of the Darrough Felsite, southern Toiyabe Range, Nevada: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 1, p. 75-81.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"75","endPage":"81","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314845,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":314844,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue1/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"16.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Toiyabe Range","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118,\n              38.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -118,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -117,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -117,\n              38.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -118,\n              38.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"4","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a7553fe4b0b28f1184d7c2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Speed, R. The porphyry appears to be a magmatic differentiate on the border of the San Lorenzo batholith that may represent a source of mineralizing hydrothermal solutions. The porphyry intrudes an albitized quartz diorite border phase of the batholith that contains large roof pendants of metavolcanic rock. These roof pendants are mostly metamorphosed to greenschist metamorphic facies, but in the vicinity of Puerto Maunabo south of the porphyry, they reach amphibolite metamorphic facies; north of the porphyry, similar xenolithic lenses of metavolcanic rock appear to have been converted entirely to an oligoclase quartz felsite. The layered albitized quartz felsite has the same composition and texture as irregular veinlets in the albitized quartz diorite and as the groundmass in the porphyry. The K<sup>+</sup> ions arid basic ions of Fe<sup>+2</sup>, Cu<sup>+2</sup>, Mg<sup>+2</sup> apparently were mobilized during final magmatic crystallization and then escaped as hydrothermal solutions that followed open conduits within a zone of structural weakness which also permitted the emplacement of the porphyry. The volcanic rock of Cerro Piedra Hueca, in contact with the albitized quartz diorite, and generally along strike west of the porphyry, has been altered to a quartz sericite rock entirely devoid of mafic silicates. This is the southeasternmost exposure of hydrothermally altered volcanic rock in the regional zone of northwest-trending faults that contains the principal porphyry-type copper deposits of Puerto Rico. The texture, mineralogy, and geologic environment of the porphyry at Puerto Maunabo are similar to those of the ore-bearing porphyries but differ in one important aspect. Most ore-bearing porphyries contain hydrothermal potassium feldspar and reddish-brown biotite intimately associated with the base-metal sulfides. In the porphyry of Puerto Maunabo, potassium feldspar is conspicuously absent, and only a trace of biotite is present; the only sulfide present is pyrite. The physical and chemical environment required to precipitate K<sup>+</sup> ions, either as potassium feldspar or biotite, apparently is very similar to that required to precipitate base-metal sulfides. At Puerto Maunabo, these conditions evidently did not prevail, and potassium and the base metals may have been carried in solution to a more favorable environment.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Pease, M.H., 1976, The source of hydrothermal solutions at Puerto Maunabo The sediments are as thick as 220 feet (67 metres) and form a freshwater aquifer which is laterally continuous with the Piney Point aquifer of the Delmarva Peninsula. The Piney Point aquifer, in the area of Newport in Cumberland County, consists of fine to coarse glauconitic sand that is suggestive of deposition in a marginal marine beach environment. The aquifer tends to become finer grained with depth; coarse sand is dominant near the top of the aquifer, whereas, silt and clay are dominant near the base. The top of the aquifer- is marked by an angular unconformity. The hiatus between the upper Eocene sediments and the overlying Kirkwood Formation of middle Miocene age represents erosion during Oligocene and early Miocene time. The Alloway Clay Member, the basal unit of the Kirkwood Formation, rests unconformably on the Piney Point aquifer. It is a silty clay, dark brown to light tan, and contains abundant shell fragments and reworked greensand from the underlying Piney Point aquifer. The Alloway Clay Member, where present, acts as a confining unit for the Piney Point aquifer in southern New Jersey. Chemical analyses of water samples from the Piney Point aquifer in Cumberland County indicate a potential chloride problem in the aquifer near Delaware Bay. A water sample taken in 1973 at the Gandys Beach well contained 516 milligrams per litre of chloride, and a water sample taken in 1973 at the Money Island Marina well contained 73 milligrams per litre of chloride. Scant water-level data indicate the possibility of declining water levels in Cumberland County near Delaware Bay due to pumping from the Piney Point aquifer in Delaware. The altitude of the water level at well 16 is -3 feet (-1 metre), and the water-level altitude at well 11 is +23 feet (+7 metres).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Nemickas, B., and Carswell, L.D., 1976, Stratigraphic and hydrologic relationship of the Piney Point aquifer and the Alloway Clay Member of the Kirkwood Formation in New Jersey: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 1, p. 1-7.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"7","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314853,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":314852,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue1/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"16.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","county":"Cumberland County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -74.90478515625,\n              39.15988184949157\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.96520996093749,\n              39.16839998800284\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.0640869140625,\n              39.193948213963644\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.11352539062499,\n              39.189690821096804\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.157470703125,\n              39.18117526158749\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.1959228515625,\n              39.223742741391305\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.26184082031249,\n              39.26628442213066\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.3497314453125,\n              39.30029918615032\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.399169921875,\n              39.342794408952386\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.50354003906249,\n              39.41497702499074\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.52001953125,\n              39.444677580473424\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.5694580078125,\n              39.47860556892209\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.552978515625,\n              39.52522954427751\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.5419921875,\n              39.57605638518604\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.96795654296875,\n              39.91394967016644\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.29229736328125,\n              39.48496522541802\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.90478515625,\n              39.15988184949157\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"4","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a7556ce4b0b28f1184d888","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nemickas, Bronius","contributorId":105733,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nemickas","given":"Bronius","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":589751,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carswell, Louis D.","contributorId":17259,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carswell","given":"Louis","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":589752,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Apatite and biotite in younger, more silicic rocks contain more F but less Cl and <span>H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O+</span>&nbsp;than apatite and biotite in older, more mafic rock; the same relations hold for F and <span>H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O+</span>&nbsp;in sphene. Correlations of the abundance of Cl, F, and <span>H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O+</span>&nbsp;in hornblende with rock chemistry and age are not as strong as for apatite, biotite, and sphene; igneous (?) epidote does not contain Cl and F in amounts detectable by electron microprobe analysis. The contents of Cl, F, and <span>H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O+</span>&nbsp;in whole-rock samples decrease with increasing differentiation index and decreasing age. Data for a single pluton of variable composition mirror the results for a suite of different plutons and dikes. The data are satisfactorily although not exclusively explained by postulating that the melts each contained progressively less Cl, F, and <span>H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O</span>&nbsp;and that the hydrons minerals consumed most of the Cl, F, and <span>H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O</span>&nbsp;in the magmas. The data may also be explained by postulating that (1) the stocks evolved Cl-bearing water during their ascent and crystallization, or that (2) Cl and <span>H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O</span>&nbsp;were concentrated during differentiation of the stocks but the minerals failed to record their buildup. Both alternative explanations find problems with and require special conditions to satisfy field, chemical, and experimental data. If many of the special conditions are not met, a nearby batholithic parent to the stocks is not a favorable source of the mineralized fluids at Ray. Propylitic alteration of biotite results in Cl-poor chlorites and may have provided some Cl to hydrothermal fluids; biotite may have also supplied some F to propylitizing fluids through alteration.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Banks, N.G., 1976, Halogen contents of igneous minerals as indicators of magmatic evolution of rocks associated with the Ray porphyry copper deposit, Arizona: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 1, p. 91-117.","productDescription":"27 p.","startPage":"91","endPage":"117","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314849,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":314848,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue1/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"16.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -112,\n              33\n            ],\n            [\n              -110,\n              33\n            ],\n            [\n              -110,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -112,\n              34\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"4","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a75570e4b0b28f1184d8ae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Banks, Norman G.","contributorId":89524,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"Norman","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":589748,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
