Multiple regression analyses were used to define the relation between flood discharge and basin and climatic variables. The analyses indicated that flood discharge is related to the drainage area and physiographic location of the basin. Accordingly, equations were developed for the Lower Coastal Plain, Inner Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Blue Ridge provinces. The standard errors of estimate range from 31 to 56 percent. Station data used in the analyses are listed in the report. </p><p>Individual relations of flood discharge and frequency to drainage area are given for some of the regulated major streams, including the Pee Dee, Catawba, Wateree, Broad, Saluda, Congaree, Santee, and Savannah Rivers. Storm tide-recurrence interval relations along the South Carolina coast indicate that the 500-year tide height can exceed 19 feet, National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929, at some locations. </p><p>A Similar geochemical surveys based on trace-element analyses have been credited with the discovery of many types of mineral deposits (Hawkes and Webb, 1962). No metallic mineral deposits other than iron Md manganese are known in the sequence of rocks exposed in the study area, and no evidence of any other deposit was found in the geochemical studies. Samples collected by the author, assisted by M. B. Longacre in May 1979 and A. E. Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" \"wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report presents the results of a mineral survey of the Ramseys Draft Addition, which is a roadless area adjoining Ramseys Draft Wilderness Study Area in the George Washington National Forest, Augusta and Highland Counties, Virginia. Four contiguous parcels of land, totaling about 96,176 acres (38,922 ha) make up the area. The first of these encompasses about 46,126 acres (18,667 ha), is wholly in Montana, and includes an addition by the Bureau of Land Management. The second area, in the Targhee National Forest, consists of some 38,750 acres (15,682 ha) within Idaho. The third and fourth parcels include about 11,300 acres (4,573 ha) in the Beaverhead..and Targhee National Forests that overlies the Mt. Although favorable geologic environments for placer gold deposits and manganese vein deposits are present in the study area, the probability of discovering economically exploitable deposits of these metals is low, and not encouraging. Even more speculative is the study area's porphyry copper potential which is based solely on the possibility of favorable host terranes underlying the study area at depth. The study area does contain substantial deposits of pumice, but their economic significance is probably minor. Geohydrologic data are compiled on five maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a buried glacio-fluvial aquifer in Monroe County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, bedrock topography, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, potentiometric surface altitude, and land use. The buried-valley deposits consist of ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and glaciolacustrine sand, silt, and clay. The sand and gravel have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt, and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel, whereas artesian conditions prevail in the northern part of the system within sand and gravel confined by silty deposits. Recharge occurs principally over the southern part of the aquifer, due to permeable land-surface conditions. Ground-water movement is towards the Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario, where discharge occurs. Several communities have wells capable of producing several hundred gallons per minute from the aquifer. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly residential with lesser amounts of industrial uses. The rocks of the Ducktown massive sulfide district to the northeast do not appear to extend into the study area, and geochemical data derived from samples of rock, soil, and alluvium do not reveal any anomalously high concentrations of trace elements that could be representative of hidden mineral deposits. Sedimentary rocks underlying the metamorphic rocks exposed at the surface have an unknown potential for hydrocarbons in the form of natural gas.
