The State is divided into 3 hydrologic regions, A, B, and C. The significant independent variables in Regions A and C were drainage area, channel slope, and lake area. Such development may affect water resources and hydrologic relations of the plains; however, little information exists concerning hydrologic processes for these areas. This report summarizes results of a hydrologic study made during 1975-78 of Salt Wells creek, a drainage area of about 500 square miles located southeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The area is typical of arid and semiarid plains areas in southwestern Wyoming where mineral development is occurring. Salt Wells Creek is predominately an intermittent stream. Numerous springs in the headwaters cause small perennial flows in some upstream tributaries, but evaporation, freezeup, and seepage deplete these flows so that the middle and lower reaches of the main channel have only intermittent flows. The intermittent nature of streamflow affects water quality. It was observed that a flushing of dissolved solids and suspended sediment occurs during the first flows of a runoff event. A striking feature of the stream is its deeply incised channel. The downcutting is attributed to the cummulative effects of: (1) a change in the relative climate, amounts of annual precipitation occurring as rain and snow, (2) change in base level due to downstream channelization, and (3) changes in land use. In this report, trap efficiency was computed from reservoir inflow and outflow sediment data and from reservoir survey and outflow data. Highland Creek Reservoir is a flood-retarding reservoir located in Lake County, near Kelseyville, California. This reservoir has a maximum storage capacity of 3,199 acre-feet and permanent pool storage of 921 acre-feet. Mean annual rainfall for the 14.1 square-mile drainage area above Highland Creek Dam was 29 inches during the December 1965 to September 1977 study period. Resultant mean annual runoff was 17,100 acre-feet. Total reservoir inflow for the 11.8 yea r study period was 202,000 acre-feet, transporting an estimated 126,000 tons (10,700 tons per year) of suspended sediment. Total reservoir outflow for the same period was 188,700 acre-feet, including 15 ,230 tons (1,290 tons per year) of sediment. At these higher resolutions such satellites will perform inspection functions of high importance to government agencies and which are beyond the capabilities of the Landsat MSS.</p><p>There is considerable evidence that nations that cannot afford their own Earth-sensing satellites are willing to pay a suitable price for the capability of inspecting their own land and adjacent sea areas. A unit price of 25 cents per square km per year is suggested as a reasonable fee which would provide economic viability to a well defined satellite system such as the Mapsat defined by the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>This concept and pricing involve only the satellite and its data acquisition and transmission capability. There has been some reluctance to adopt these systems in operational programmes because of a lack of assured continuity of data collection, continuing changes in the systems, and some dissatisfaction with the types of data made available to users. Nevertheless, there is sufficient conviction of the value of satellite remote sensing so that new systems will be developed by several countries in the decade of the 1980's. The status changes continuously as studies are completed, and budgets are adjusted.
