Data were collected routinely at five stations, and periodically at 17 stations including three stations near the mouth of the Potomac River in Chesapeake Bay. Each of the five stations represent a cross section through which the transport of selected dissolved and suspended materials can be computed. The remaining stations represent locations at which data were collected for special synoptic studies such as salt water migration, and dissolved oxygen dynamics. Routinely, samples were analyzed for silica, nitrogen, phosphorus, chlorophyll-a, pheophytin, and suspended sediment. Additional samples were analyzed for organic carbon, calcium, manganese, magnesium, sodium, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, potassium, chloride, fluoride, seston, algal growth potential, adenosine triphosphate, nitrifying bacteria and dissolved-solids residue. In addition, solar radiation measurements and in-situ measurements of dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, pH, temperature, and Secchi disk transparency are reported. Tabulation of the results show that extrapolated undisturbed temperatures range from a minimum of 98?F (37?C) at 4,000 feet (1,220 m) to a maximum of 420?F (216?C) at 20,260 feet (6,177 m) and that geothermal gradients range from 0.34?F/100' (6?C/km) between 4,470 feet to 7,975 feet (Lisburne (1) and 3.15?F/100? (57?C/km) between 6,830 feet to 7,940 feet (Drew Point #1). Essential information needed for extrapolations consists of: time-sequential 'bottom-hole' temperatures during wire-line logging of intermediate and deep intervals of the bore hole; the times that circulating drilling fluids had disturbed the formations; and the subsequent times that non-circulating drilling fluids had been in contact with the formation. In several wells presumed near direct measures of rock temperatures recorded from formation fluids recovered by drill stem tests (DST) across thin (approx. 10-20 foot) intervals are made available. \r\n\r\nWe believe that the results approach actual values close enough to serve as approximations of the thermal regimes in appropriate future investigations. Continuous temperature logs obtained at the start and end of final logging operations, conductivity measurements, and relatively long-term measurements of the recovery from disturbance at shallow depths in many of the wells will permit refinements of our values and provide determination of temperatures at other depths.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82391","usgsCitation":"Blanchard, D., and Tailleur, I., 1982, Temperatures and interval geothermal-gradient determinations from wells in National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-391, ii, 82 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82391.","productDescription":"ii, 82 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140706,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0391/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35458,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0391/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a01e4b07f02db5f7f83","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blanchard, D.C.","contributorId":18763,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blanchard","given":"D.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156834,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tailleur, I.L.","contributorId":59027,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tailleur","given":"I.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156835,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Such measurements are under way in 25 wells on the Alaskan Arctic Slope; 21 are in Naval Petroleum Reserve Alaska (NPRA), and 4 are in the foothills to the east. Near-equilibrium results indicate that permafrost thickness in NPRA generally ranges between 200 and 400 m (compared to 600+ m at Prudhoe Bay); there are large local variations and no conspicuous regional trends. By contrast the long-term mean temperature of the ground surface (one factor determining permafrost depth) varies systematically from north to south in a pattern modified by the regional topography. The observed variation in permafrost temperature and depth cannot result primarily from effects of surface bodies of water or regional variations in heat flow; they are consistent, however, with expectable variations in the thermal conductivity of the sediments. It remains to be determined (with conductivity measurements) whether certain sites with anomalously high local gradients have anomalously high heat flow; if they do, they might indicate upwelling of interstitial fluids in the underlying basin sediments.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821039","usgsCitation":"Lachenbruch, A.H., Sass, J., Lawver, L., Brewer, M., and Moses, T., 1982, Depth and temperature of permafrost on the Alaskan Arctic Slope; preliminary results: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1039, 30 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821039.","productDescription":"30 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141344,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1039/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34414,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1039/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667a77","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lachenbruch, Arthur H.","contributorId":27850,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lachenbruch","given":"Arthur","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154243,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sass, J.H.","contributorId":70749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sass","given":"J.H.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":154245,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lawver, L.A.","contributorId":73599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lawver","given":"L.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154246,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Brewer, M.C.","contributorId":54994,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brewer","given":"M.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154244,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Moses, T.H.","contributorId":24344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moses","given":"T.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154242,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The study included a high-resolution seismic reflection survey, surficial sediment sampling and surface current drifter sampling. Approximately 7100 sq km of the Louisiana-Mississippi shelf and upper slope were surveyed. \r\n\r\nThe sea floor of the entire area is relatively smooth except for occasional areas of uplift produced by diapiric intrusion along the upper slope. Characteristics of the topography and subsurface shelf sediments are the result of depositional sequences due to delta outbuilding over transgressive sediments with intervening periods of erosion during low sea level stands. Little evidence of structural deformation such as faults, diapirs, and shallow gas is present on the shelf and only a few minor faults and scarps are found on the slope. \r\n\r\nMinisparker seismic records in combination with air gun (40 and 5 cu in) and 3.5-kHz subbottom profile records reveal that seven major stages of shelf development have occurred since the middle Pleistocene. The shelf development has been controlled by the rise and fall of sea level. These stages are defined by four major unconformities, several depositions of transgressive sediments, sequences of river channeling and progradational delta deposits. \r\n\r\nSurficial sediment sample and seismic records indicate tat the last major depositional event was the progradation of the St. Bernard Delta lobe. This delta lobe covered the northwestern and central regions. Surficial sediments in most of the study area are the product of the reworking of the San Bernard Delta lobe and previous progradations.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821077","usgsCitation":"Kindinger, J., Miller, R.J., and Stelting, C., 1982, Depositional history of Louisiana-Mississippi outer continental shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1077, iii, 59 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821077.","productDescription":"iii, 59 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140196,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1077/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34413,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1077/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab1e4b07f02db66e8b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kindinger, J. This project was a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center. The objective of the accuracy assessment was to estimate (with a precision of ?10 percent at the 90 percent confidence level) the comission error in each of the eight level II hierarchical vegetation cover types. A stratified two-phase (double) cluster sample was used. Phase I consisted of 160 photointerpreted plots representing clusters of Landsat pixels, and phase II consisted of ground data collection at 80 of the phase I cluster sites. Ground data were used to refine the phase I error estimates by means of a linear regression model. The classified image was stratified by assigning each 15-pixel cluster to the stratum corresponding to the dominant cover type within each cluster. This method is known as stratified plurality sampling. \r\n\r\nOverall error was estimated to be 36 percent with a standard error of 2 percent. Estimated error for individual vegetation classes ranged from a low of 10 percent ?6 percent for evergreen woodland to 81 percent ?7 percent for cropland and pasture. Total cost of the accuracy assessment was $106,950 for the one-million-hectare study area. \r\n\r\nThe combination of the stratified plurality sampling (SPS) method of sample allocation with double sampling provided the desired estimates within the required precision levels. The overall accuracy results confirmed that highly accurate digital classification of vegetation is difficult to perform in semiarid environments, due largely to the sparse vegetation cover. Nevertheless, these techniques show promise for providing more accurate information than is presently available for many BLM-administered lands.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82814","usgsCitation":"Szajgin, J., Pettinger, L.R., Linden, D., and Ohlen, D., 1982, Arizona Vegetation Resource Inventory (AVRI) accuracy assessment: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-814, iii, 40 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82814.","productDescription":"iii, 40 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34304,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0814/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139506,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0814/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db672ffa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Szajgin, John","contributorId":60203,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Szajgin","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153903,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pettinger, L. S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected 5,029 km of single-channel seismic-reflection data from the Georges Bank area of the Atlantic Continental Shelf and Slope during the R/V COLUMBUS ISELIN cruise CI 7-78-2. The purpose of the cruise was to determine the location and frequency of mass sediment movement and other geologic hazards along the Continental Slope.</p><p>Navigation of the COLUMBUS ISELIN was by LORAN-C; position fixes were automatically recorded at 5-minute intervals and manually plotted and recorded at 15-minute intervals. The navigation equipment included a Northstar 6000 LORAN receiver and a Texas Instruments Silent 700 tape and paper recorder.</p><p>The seismic equipment consisted of a 40-in<sup>3</sup> airgun, a 5-in<sup>3&nbsp;</sup>airgun, a Teledyne 600-joule mnisparker, and ORE (Ocean Research Equipment Inc.) 3.5-kHz transducer. The seismic profiles obtained were recorded on paper by EPC (EPC Labs Inc.) recorders and on magnetic tape by a 7-channel analog tape recorder. Overall, the data quality is excellent, and penetration and resolution are good although in some areas, the underlying structure was obscured by rough topography.</p><p>The original records may be viewed at the USGS office in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The purpose of this study was to estimate the natural streamflow in the Rio San Jose that would have entered the pueblos if no upstream water development had taken place. Estimates of natural flow were based upon streamflow and precipitation records, historical accounts of streamflow, records of irrigated acreage, and empirically-derived estimates of the effects on streamflow of Bluewater Lake, groundwater withdrawals, and irrigation diversions. Natural streamflow in the Rio San Jose at the western boundary of the Pueblo of Acoma is estimated to be between 13,000 and 15,000 acre-feet per year, based on 55 years of recorded and reconstructed streamflow data from water years 1913 to 1972. Natural streamflow at the western boundary of the Pueblo of Laguna is estimated to be between 17 ,000 and 19,000 acre-feet per year for the same period. The error in these estimates of natural streamflow is difficult to assess accurately, but it probably is less than 25 percent. The test plots were constructed to evaluate the effects of processed oil shale geochemistry on plant growth using various thicknesses of soil cover over the processed shale and/or over a gravel barrier between the shale and soil. Generally, the thicker the soil cover, the less the influence of the shale geochemistry on the element concentrations in the plants. Concentrations of 20 elements were larger in the ash of four-wing saltbush growing on the plot with the gravel barrier (between the soil and processed shale) when compared to the sample from the control plot. A greater water content in the soil in this plot has been reported, and the interaction between the increased, percolating water and shale may have increased the availability of these elements for plant uptake. Concentrations of boron, copper, fluorine, lithium, molybdenum, selenium, silicon, and zinc were larger in the samples grown over processed shale, compared to those from the control plot, and concentrations for barium, calcium, lanthanum, niobium, phosphorus, and strontium were smaller. \r\n\r\nConcentrations for arsenic, boron, fluorine, molybdenum, and selenium-- considered to be potential toxic contaminants--were similar to results reported in the literature for vegetation from the test plots. The copper-to-molybdenum ratios in three of the four samples of four-wing saltbush growing over the processed shale were below the ratio of 2:1, which is judged detrimental to ruminants, particularly cattle. Boron concentrations averaged 140 ppm, well above the phytotoxicity level for most plant species. Arsenic, fluorine, and selenium concentrations were below toxic levels, and thus should not present any problem for revegetation or forage use at this time.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821051","usgsCitation":"Anderson, B., 1982, Effects of processed oil shale on the element content of Atriplex cancescens: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1051, 18 p., ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821051.","productDescription":"18 p., ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141578,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1051/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35173,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1051/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cfe4b07f02db5460a4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderson, B.M.","contributorId":69552,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"B.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156479,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The model can simulate impervious area, pervious area, and precipitation contributions to runoff quality as well as the effects of street sweeping and (or) detention storage. Within-storm variations of runoff quality are simulated for user-specified storm-runoff periods. Between these storms, a daily accounting of the accumulation and washoff of water-quality constituents on effective impervious areas is maintained. The time step of the within-storm simulations can range from 1 to 60 minutes. \r\n\r\nThe model can be operated as a lumped-parameter model or as a distributed-parameter model. As a lumped-parameter model, no spatial variations in model parameters are accounted for, and input to the model requires flow hydrographs only at the outlet of the watershed. The outlet hydrographs can be either observed or simulated. As a distributed-parameter model, the model requires flow hydrographs at many points in the watershed, as defined by basin segmentation. These hydrographs will normally be simulated by the Distributed Routing Rainfall-Runoff Model. \r\n\r\nThis report includes a presentation of the theory and limitations of the model, as well as a program listing, instructions for running the program, and example simulations.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82764","usgsCitation":"Alley, W., and Smith, P.E., 1982, Multi-event urban runoff quality model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-764, vi, 175 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82764.","productDescription":"vi, 175 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141374,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0764/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35162,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0764/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b485b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Alley, W.M.","contributorId":6853,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Alley","given":"W.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156463,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, P. The model provides detailed simulation of storm-runoff periods selected by the user and a daily soil-moisture accounting between storms. A drainage basin is represented as a set of overland-flow, channel, and reservoir seqments which ,jointly describe the drainage features of the basin. Kinematic wave theory is used for routing flows over contributing overland-flow areas and through the channel network. A set of model segments can be arranged into a network that will represent many complex drainage basins. As much as 14 inches of rain fell during October 6-9, 1977, over the mountains of southern Arizona and northern Mexico and caused the highest discharge since at least 1892 on the Santa Cruz River upstream from Tucson. The flood inundated areas as much as 4 miles wide, covered at least 16,000 acres of farmland, and caused $15.2 million in damage. Residential losses occurred at Nogales, Amado, Green Valley, and Sahuarita. Severe erosional damage occurred along the Santa Cruz River, Agua Fria Canyon, Potrero Creek, and many small drainages in the Sonoita Creek basin. The peak discharge in Agua Fria Canyon was the highest since before 1900. Less severe flooding occurred along the San Pedro River and the Gila River downstream from the San Pedro.</p><p>Widespread rainfall of 3 to 6 inches and 9 to 14 inches in some areas in the central mountains during February 28 to March 3, 1978, caused the highest discharge since 1920 on the Salt River in Phoenix and resulted in three deaths. Flooding along the Salt and Gila Rivers and several lesser streams caused statewide damage totaling $65.9 million, of which about $37 million occurred in Maricopa County. Nine counties were declared disaster areas.</p><p>During the flood of March 1978, moderate peak discharges and unusually high volumes of runoff occurred on tributaries to the Salt and Verde Rivers upstream from a system of reservoirs. Flood magnitudes were greater at the main-stem gaging stations than on the tributaries. The peak discharge into Theodore Roosevelt Lake, which was 21 percent full at the start of the flood, was about 155,000 cubic feet per second and is the largest known from 1890 to 1978. The reservoirs stored large quantities of water and greatly reduced the magnitude of the flood. The peak discharge of the Salt River was 125,000 cubic feet per second below Granite Reef Dam and 122,000 cubic feet per second at Phoenix. Discharges in excess of 100,000 cubic feet per second occurred for 8 hours. Without the storage provided by the reservoirs, the peak discharge would have been 260,000 cubic feet per second and the discharge would have exceeded 100,000 cubic feet per second for 66 hours. The Verde River was the principal flood source, but flows at the upstream gaging stations did not indicate the magnitude of the impending flood at Horseshoe Reservoir because large inflow from tributaries immediately upstream from the reservoir caused the river to rise at downstream stations before it rose at upstream stations.</p><p>About 17 percent of the water entering the reach from Granite Reef Dam to Gillespie Dam went to recharge, temporary ground-water storage, or evapotranspiration losses. All water was stored at Painted Rock Reservoir and released at a low rate that prevented water from reaching the Gila River near Mohawk gaging station.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82687","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with U.S. Bureau of Reclamation; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District; Arizona Department of Water Resources; Flood Control District of Maricopa County; and Salt River Valley Water Users' Association","usgsCitation":"Aldridge, B.N., and Eychaner, J., 1982, Floods of October 1977 in southern Arizona and March 1978 in central Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-687, Report: v, 167 p.; 6 Plates: 39.37 x 22.21 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82687.","productDescription":"Report: v, 167 p.; 6 Plates: 39.37 x 22.21 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":427015,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427014,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427013,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427012,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427011,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427010,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427009,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142041,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0687/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"central Arizona, southern Arizona","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114.51282734641853,\n 34.76108820121095\n ],\n [\n -114.51282734641853,\n 31.355482940702416\n ],\n [\n -108.9975564540747,\n 31.355482940702416\n ],\n [\n -108.9975564540747,\n 34.76108820121095\n ],\n [\n -114.51282734641853,\n 34.76108820121095\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48c4e4b07f02db53e8a0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Aldridge, B.
