Hydrologic data collected during 1977 and 1978 were used to develop the flow model under steady-state and transient conditions. Three scenarios for operating the stream-aquifer system were evaluated with the digital model. The scenarios represent no ground-water pumping, pumping by all existing wells , and pumping by all existing and proposed wells. The model simulations used average values of stream discharge, ground-water pumpage and water use as input parameters. A decrease in the quantitity of ground-water discharge to Bates Creek is predicted to occur through 1988 as a result of pumping. The magnitude and timing of the predicted decrease in ground-water discharge may differ from actual ground-water discharge if hydrologic conditions through 1988 vary significantly from the averaged input values used in the simulations. Twelve buildings in Westmorland were severely damaged with an additional 30 sustaining minor damage. Two brick parapets fell in Calipatria, 14 km northeast of Westmorland and 10 km from the earthquake epicenter. Significant damage in rural areas was restricted to unreinforced, concrete-lined irrigation canals. Liquefaction effects and ground slumping were widespread in rural areas and were the primary causes of road cracking. During the 1980 summer season, approximately 1600 km of multisensored, high-resolution geophysical profile data were collected along a rectangular grid with 4.8 km line spacing. Interpretation of these data is presented on five maps showing bathymetry, sea-floor microrelief, ice-gouge characteristics, Holocene sediment thickness, and geologic structure to depths of approximately 1000 m. \r\n\r\nOn a broad scale, the seafloor is shallow and almost flat, although microrelief features produced by sediment transport and ice-gouge processes typically vary up to several meters in amplitude. Microrelief bedforms related to hydraulic processes are predominant in water depths less than 12 m. Microrelief caused by ice gouging generally increases with water depth, reaching a maximum of 2 m or more in water depths beyond the 20 m isobath. This intensely gouged area lies beneath the shear zone between the seasonal landfast ice and the mobile polar ice pack. \r\n\r\nThe thickness of recent (Holocene) sediment increases offshore, from 2 m near the Colville River delta to 30 m or more on the outer shelf. The thin Holocene layer is underlain by a complex horizon interpreted to be the upper surface of a Pleistocene deposit similar in composition to the present Arctic Coastal Plain. The base of the inferred Pleistocene section is interpreted to be a low-angle unconformity 100 m below sea level. Beneath this Tertiary-Quaternary unconformity, strata are interpreted to be alluvial fan-delta plain deposits corresponding to the Colville Group and younger formations of Late Cretaceous to Tertiary age. Numerous high-angle faults downthrown to the north trend across the survey area. With few exceptions, these faults terminate at or below the 100 m unconformity, suggesting that most tectonism occurred before Quaternary time. Acoustic anomalies suggesting gas accumulation are rare, and where identified typically occur adjacent to faults. A laterally continuous zone of poor seismic data occurs in the nearshore area and is interpreted to be caused by subsea permafrost. This report describes these geologic conditions in Harrison Bay and discusses potential hazards that they may pose for future oil and gas operations in Sale 71 and adjacent Beaufort Sea shelf areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8235","usgsCitation":"Craig, J., and Thrasher, G.P., 1982, Environmental geology of Harrison Bay, northern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-35, iii, 28 p., 6 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8235.","productDescription":"iii, 28 p., 6 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140504,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36009,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36010,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36011,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36012,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36013,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36014,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36015,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0035/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abbe4b07f02db6723d7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Craig, J.D.","contributorId":14405,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Craig","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157726,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thrasher, G. Potential problems associated with increases in pumpage and urban development are lowered water levels, contamination of the aquifers, and land subsidence. Long-term water-level declines in the Memphis Sand, the principal artesian aquifer of the area, range from less than 0.1 ft per year near the outcrop area to about 1.8 ft per year near the center of pumping. A 1980 map of the potentiometric map surface shows that small cones of depression around major pumping centers are superimposed on a regional cone. Except for increased pumping lift, few problems are expected from water level declines in the Memphis Sand. At present, there is very little pumpage from other aquifers in the area--the alluvium, the fluvial deposits and the Fort Pillow Sand--and no long-term water level declines are expected unless pumpage is increased significantly. Low concentrations of leachates from waste-disposal sites in the area have been detected in the water table aquifers near these sites, but no indication of contamination of the underlying artesian aquifers has yet been found. Seasonal land-surface elevation changes of less than 0.03 ft have been recorded by an extensometer near the center of the major cone of depression of the Memphis Sand. These changes correlate with seasonal changes in artesian pressure in the Memphis Sand. Over the period of record no significant net change in land-surface elevation has been recorded. In the last 50 years, magnitude 7 or greater earthquakes have occurred in this region on the average of once every six years, but four 7+ events have now occurred within the last six years. The mainshock was preceded about two hours earlier by a foreshock that was used as a calibration event for the Joint Epicenter Determination relocation of the mainshock and nearby seismicity occurring within a period seven months prior to and one week after the mainshock. The foreshock, better-located events of the prior seismicity, and most aftershocks are concentrated in a group near the mainshock epicenter, but several more distant aftershocks suggest that the aftershock zone may have been as large as 125 km in length and trended about S35?E. Identification of depth phases from a full suite of broadband records gives source depths of 25-3km for the mainshock and 29.5?3 km for the foreshock using a JB earth model. \r\n\r\nSource parameters were determined for the mainshock utilizing WWSSN analog and GDSN digital data. The preferred fault plane solution based on P-wave first motion data is a south by southwesterly steeply dipping normal fault, remarkably similar to the mechanism reported by Johnson and Molnar (1972) for the nearby earthquake of April 20, 196B. A waveform inversion technique described by Sipkin (1982), when applied to long-period P waveforms, gives an 'average' point source solution for a purely deviatoric moment rate tensor at a preferred source depth of 22 km. Very similar results were obtained from long-period GDSN body-wave and mantle-wave data using a centroid-moment tensor inversion technique described in Dziewonski, and others (1981). Both techniques provide solutions very close to a double couple source with a south by southwesterly shallow-dipping normal fault mechanism. \r\n\r\nTo obtain the scalar mantle wave moment, GDSN vertical and transverse records 20,000 see in length were processed as described by Buland and Taggart (1981). Averaging all the data from Rayleigh and Love waves yields an estimate of 3.8 x 10^27 dyne-cm (as compared to about 1.9 x 10^27 from body-wave moment tensor inversions) or a moment magnitude (Mr) of 7.6. \r\n\r\nFor the portion of the waveform analysed (50-5B sec), the body-wave inversion performed by Sipkin gives a source time function of duration approximately 28 sec with two peaks in activity. Simultaneous analysis of short-period records, and broadband ground displacements and velocities, a method described by Harvey and Choy (1982) and Choy and Boatwright (1981) revealed a complex rupture consisting of two subevents, of about the same moment, separated in time by about 25 sec, and with durations of about 25 sec each. The two peaks in activity resolved by the body-wave moment tensor inversion correspond to the first of these subevents.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82782","usgsCitation":"Davis, J., Howard, K.A., Rettig, S., Smith, R.L., Ericksen, G.E., Risacher, F., Alarcon, H., and Morales, R., 1982, Progress report on lithium-related geologic investigations in Bolivia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-782, 18 p., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82782.","productDescription":"18 p., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140516,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0782/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34882,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0782/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db688582","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Davis, J.R.","contributorId":83907,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Davis","given":"J.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155724,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Howard, K. Comparison of sheet and rill erosion by use of the Universal Soil Loss Equation, shows 1975 erosion rates on upland fields to be about one-fourth those of 1934. Average annual sedimentation accumulation in small reservoirs declined from about 5,000 megagrams per square kilometer in 1936-45 to about 50 megagrams per square kilometer in 1962-75. Analysis of deposition in tributary valleys suggests that annual rates declined from about 3,700 megagrams per square kilometer in the 1930 's to about 35-70 megagrams per square kilometer in recent years. These reductions in erosion and sedimentation are due principally to improvements in land management and, to a lesser degree, to changes in land use. These fossiliferous strata are assigned to the Fossil Hill Member and upper member of the Prida Formation, which here forms the oldest part of the Star Peak Group. The distribution and abundance of fossils within the section is uneven, partly because of original depositional patterns within the dominantly calcareous succession and partly because of diagenetic secondary dolomitization and hydrothermal metamorphism in parts of the range.

Lower and middle Anisian fossil localities are restricted to the northern part of the range and are scattered, so that only three demonstrably distinct stratigraphic levels are represented. Cephalopods from these localities are characteristic of the Caurus Zone and typify the lower and upper parts of the Hyatti Zone, a new zonal unit whose faunas have affinity with those from the older parts of the Varium Zone in Canada.

The upper Anisian and lowermost Ladinian, as exposed in the vicinity of Fossil Hill in the southern part of the range, are extremely fossiliferous. Cephalopod and Daonella shells form a major component of many of the limestone interbeds in the calcareous fine-grained clastic section here. Stratigraphically controlled bedrock collections representing at least 20 successive levels have been made from the Fossil Hill area, which is the type locality for the Rotelliformis, Meeki, and Occidentalis Zones of the upper Anisian and the Subasperum Zone of the lower Ladinian. Above the Subasperum Zone fossils are again scarce; upper Ladinian faunas representing the Daonella lommeli beds occur at only a few places in the upper member of the Prida Formation.

Although unevenly fossiliferous, the succession of Middle Triassic cephalopod and Daonella faunas in the Humboldt Range is one of the most complete of any known in the world. Newly collected faunas from this succession provide the basis for revising the classic monograph on Middle Triassic marine invertebrates of North America published in 1914 by J. P. Smith and based largely on stratigraphically uncontrolled collections from the Humboldt Range. Taxonomic treatment of these collections, old and new, from the Humboldt Range provides the documentation necessary to establish this Middle Triassic succession as a biostratigraphic standard of reference.

Of the 68 species of ammonites described or discussed, 4 are from the lower Anisian, 20 from the middle Anisian, 39 from the upper Anisian, 4 from the lower Ladinian, and 1 from the upper Ladinian. A few additional ammonite species from other localities in Nevada are also treated in order to clarify their morphologic characteristics and stratigraphic occurrence. Other elements in the Middle Triassic molluscan faunas of the Humboldt Range comprise five species of nautiloids and three of coleoids from the middle and upper Anisian parts of the section. Eight more or less stratigraphically restricted species of Daonella occur in the upper Anisian and Ladinian.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp1207","usgsCitation":"Silberling, N.J., and Nichols, K.M., 1982, Middle Triassic molluscan fossils of biostratigraphic significance from the Humboldt Range, northwestern Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1207, Report: v, 77 p. plus plates 4-38; 3 plates: 14.74 x 15.83 inches or less, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1207.","productDescription":"Report: v, 77 p. plus plates 4-38; 3 plates: 14.74 x 15.83 inches or less","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":121982,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1207/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":60448,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1207/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate 1"},{"id":110598,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74455.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"74455"},{"id":60449,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1207/plate-2.pdf","text":"Plate 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate 2"},{"id":60450,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1207/plate-3.pdf","text":"Plate 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate 3"},{"id":60451,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1207/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Humboldt Range","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.12088012695311,\n 40.66709790906187\n ],\n [\n -118.22937011718749,\n 40.632714496550626\n ],\n [\n -118.267822265625,\n 40.588928169693745\n ],\n [\n -118.28842163085938,\n 40.50126945841645\n ],\n [\n -118.30764770507811,\n 40.36956635131763\n ],\n [\n -118.34335327148438,\n 40.29419163838167\n ],\n [\n -118.4051513671875,\n 40.176774799905445\n ],\n [\n -118.40103149414061,\n 40.0833252155441\n ],\n [\n -118.3502197265625,\n 40.06756263511062\n ],\n [\n -118.23211669921876,\n 40.03707796840224\n ],\n [\n -118.13873291015626,\n 40.03182061333687\n ],\n [\n -118.06732177734375,\n 40.04128356064847\n ],\n [\n -118.048095703125,\n 40.094882122321145\n ],\n [\n -118.03024291992189,\n 40.1715282298637\n ],\n [\n -118.04260253906249,\n 40.300476079749494\n ],\n [\n -118.02612304687499,\n 40.44694705960048\n ],\n [\n -118.04260253906249,\n 40.487692978918865\n ],\n [\n -118.02612304687499,\n 40.527370351380384\n ],\n [\n -117.99316406249999,\n 40.58162765924269\n ],\n [\n -117.99179077148438,\n 40.63375667842965\n ],\n [\n -118.01651000976562,\n 40.6920928987952\n ],\n [\n -118.04946899414062,\n 40.704586878965245\n ],\n [\n -118.07968139648438,\n 40.686886382151116\n ],\n [\n -118.12088012695311,\n 40.66709790906187\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db635315","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Silberling, Norman J.","contributorId":102438,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Silberling","given":"Norman","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":208745,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nichols, K. S. Geological Survey","docAbstract":"
The U.S. Geological Survey has developed an oilspill risk analysis model to aid in estimating the environmental hazards of developing oil resources in Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lease areas. The large, computerized model analyzes the probability of spill occurrence, as well as the likely paths or trajectories of spills in relation to the locations of recreational and biological resources which may be vulnerable. The analytical methodology can easily incorporate estimates of weathering rates , slick dispersion, and possible mitigating effects of cleanup. The probability of spill occurrence is estimated from information on the anticipated level of oil production and method of route of transport. Spill movement is modeled in Monte Carlo fashion with a sample of 500 spills per season, each transported by monthly surface current vectors and wind velocities sampled from 3-hour wind transition matrices. Transition matrices are based on historic wind records grouped in 41 wind velocity classes, and are constructed seasonally for up to six wind stations. Locations and monthly vulnerabilities of up to 31 categories of environmental resources are digitized within an 800,000 square kilometer study area. Model output includes tables of conditional impact probabilities (that is, the probability of hitting a target, given that a spill has occurred), as well as probability distributions for oilspills occurring and contacting environmental resources within preselected vulnerability time horizons.
