Parts of the East Branch Mahoning Creek basin, a forested area of 29.6 square miles in west-central Pennsylvania, are disturbed by farming, surface mining, unpaved haul roads, eroding reclaimed areas, and logging. Streamflow was measured and water samples collected at a site upstream from the mouth from June 1979 to June 1980 during base flow and storm periods to evaluate sediment discharges. An additional site on a tributary draining mostly farmland was sampled from December 1979 to June 1980. Samples were analyzed for suspended sediment, turbidity, and specific conductance. Daily mean suspended-sediment concentrations and discharges were computed.
\nFrom June 1979 to June 1980, 3,570 tons of suspended sediment was transported from the basin. This was an average yield of 121 tons per square mile per year. From December 1979 to June 1980, a tributary draining 2.21 square miles of a predominantly agricultural area discharged 328 tons of sediment which was 12 percent of the sediment load transported from the entire basin.
\nMonthly sediment discharges averaged 298 tons ranged from 32 tons in July to 1,250 tons in March. The highest daily mean suspended-sediment concentration was 712 milligrams per liter on June 8, 1980. On that date, 267 tons of sediment was discharged from the basin.

and statistically analyzed on the basis of area, aquifer, and well depth. Concentrations exceeding 10 milligrams per liter occurred generally in wells less than 100 feet in depth, indicating that nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in ground water greater than 10 milligrams per liter commonly are derived from nitrogen sources at or near the land surface, although soluble nitrogen may be derived from fine-grained sediments in some aquifers.
Water from shales in central and eastern Kansas and from limestone in eastern Kansas exhibited the highest median concentrations and highest incidence of concentrations above 10 milligrams per liter. Water from 10 percent of the wells in unconsolidated Quaternary deposits in western Kansas and almost 30 percent of the wells in eastern Kansas had nitrate-nitrogen concentrations that exceeded 10 milligrams per liter. Shallow wells in shales, limestones, and unconsolidated Quaternary deposits are highly susceptible to nitrate contamination. Water from unconsolidated Tertiary deposits produced a low incidence of nitrate-nitrogen concentrations greater than 10 milligrams per liter, indicating minimal nitrate contamination from sources at or near the land surface. Sandstones in all areas exhibited the lowest median and lowest incidence of nitratenitrogen concentrations above 10 milligrams per liter.

\nFor the purpose of listing and describing earthquakes, the United States has been divided into nine regions: (1) Northeastern Region, which includes New England and New York activity and observations of the principal earthquakes of eastern Canada; (2) Eastern Region, including the central Appalachian seismic region activity and the area near Charleston, S.C.; (3) Central Region, which consists of the area between the region just described and the Rocky Mountains; (4) Western Mountain Region, which includes all remaining states except those on the Pacific coast; (5) Washington and Oregon; (6) Alaska; (7) Hawaii; (8) Puerto Rico; and (9) California and Western Nevada. This arrangement has been made chiefly with reference to the natural seismic divisions. It also is a convenient arrangement because there are only three states where there is an important division of earthquake activity: In Tennessee, there are quite distinct areas at opposite ends of the state that fall into different regions. Only central and eastern Nevada are included in the Western Mountain Region, as the activity of the western part is closely associated with that of California. Some earthquake activity has occurred in the part of Texas located in the Western Mountain Region.
\nThe map facing page 1 shows locations of all earthquakes in the regions that follow. A small map showing the area covered by each region immediately precedes the résumé of each chapter (except for the Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii regions). The seismic risk map below was developed in January 1969 for the conterminous United States by Dr. S. T. Algermissen of NOAA's Environmental Research Laboratories. Subject to revision as continuing research warrants, it is an updated edition of a map divides the United States into four zones: Zone 0, areas with no reasonable expectancy of earthquake damage; Zone 1, expected minor damage; Zone 2, expected moderate damage; and Zone 3, major destructive earthquakes may occur.

The belt, interpreted as an ancient island arc, begins about 50 km south of Washington, D. C, and extends some 175 km south- westward. The volcanic rocks within the belt are located along the flanks of the Quantico- Columbia synclinorium and the Arvonia syncline. The Chopawamsic Formation, a western facies of the belt, consists of volcanic rocks that have the geochemical features (rare earth and immobile elements) of a tholeiitic island-arc suite; it also contains calc-alkaline components. Tholeiitic amphibolites of the Ta River Metamorphic Suite on the eastern side of the belt form an oceanward facies of the island arc, coeval with the Chopawamsic. This distribution suggests an underlying westward-dipping Cambrian(?) subduction zone. Contrasts in stratigraphy, geochemistry, and magnetic and gravity features indicate that the central Virginia volcanic- plutonic belt is not related to the Carolina slate belt as has been proposed in the past. Known sulfide bodies in the Chopawamsic and its coeval units total about 13.5 million tons. The Mineral district on the northwest flank of the Quantico-Columbia synclinorium has the largest deposits and contains about 10 million tons. Sulfide bodies in the belt consist largely of pyrite with minor sphalerite and chalcopyrite; Zn and Pb are important in a few of the smaller deposits. There are local concentrations of sphalerite and other base metal minerals within the major pyritic deposits (Zn = 1-12.5%; Cu - 1-2%; Pb as much as 5%). The dom- inantly sphaleritic deposits are found in and northward for about 15 km from the Mineral district. Sulfide mineralization is found in all types of volcanic rock, but the large sulfide bodies on the northwest flank of the Quantico-Columbia synclinorium are in felsite. Am- phibolite, containing local beds of iron-formation, is abundant on the southeast flank of the Arvonia syncline; however, most sulfide mineralization there took place in felsitic to intermediate layers. Mineralization, attributed to submarine volcanic exhalation, took place during formation of the island arc.
South San Francisco Bay, USA, is a shallow coastal embayment that receives large inputs of nutrients (N. P, Si) and small local inputs of freshwater. Phytoplankton dynamics are typically characterized by a spring bloom when surface chlorophyll a increases from < 5 to > 40 mg m-3. The bloom persists for 2 to 4 wk, and then dissipates. Phytoplankton biomass remains low (chlorophyll a < 5 mg m-3) from May through December, although light and nutrient availability are sufficient to sustain growth rates of 1 to 1.5 divisions d-1 in the expansive shallows. Transport processes apparently exert a small influence on phytoplankton biomass, and calculated zooplankton grazing accounts for only a small reduction in net rate of phytoplankton population growth in the shallows. However, suspension-feeding bivalves are sufficiently abundant to filter a volume equivalent to the volume of South Bay at least once daily. These observations suggest that grazing by benthos is the primary mechanism controlling phytoplankton biomass during summer and fall.

Unfortunately, this definition of the Lagrangian residual circulation is conceptually incorrect because both the Eulerian residual circulation and the Stokes' drift are Eulerian variables. In this paper a classification of various residual variables are reviewed and properly defined. The Lagrangian residual circulation is then studied by means of a two-stage formulation of a computer model. The tidal circulation is first computed in a conventional Eulerian way, and then the Lagrangian residual circulation is determined by a method patterned after the method of markers and cells. To demonstrate properties of the Lagrangian residual circulation, application of this approach in South San Francisco Bay, California, is considered. With the aid of the model results, properties of the Eulerian and Lagrangian residual circulation are examined. It can be concluded that estimation of the Lagrangian residual circulation from Eulerian data may lead to unacceptable error, particularly in a tidal estuary where the tidal excursion is of the same order of magnitude as the length scale of the basin. A direction calculation of the Lagrangian residual circulation must be made and has been shown to be feasible.

Construction of new reservoirs has decreased in recent years because of the lack of suitable sites and the opposition of environmental interests. Reservoirs have characteristics of both lacustrine and riverine ecosystems. Reservoirs have been segmented into riverine, transitional and lacustrine zones for simulation modelling.Fish and plankton production increases rapidly after initial impoundment and then decreases and stabilizes at lower levels. Decreases in the number of fish species and in fish biomass following impoundment are caused by reduced quantity and quality of spawning and nursery habitat and decreased detrital input. Plankton populations can be followed downstream in a series of reservoirs and increases in abundance were associated with the inundation of vegetation or the introduction of nutrients.In addition to water level management, the most effective fish management programs have included introducing new fishes, developing vegetation or building structures on the reservoir bottom. Considerable progress has been made in predicting the effects of environmental parameters on fish production.

This is in apparent conflict with the recommendation of the September 1976 consultants’ meeting convened by the International Atomic Energy Agency on stable isotope standards. Furthermore, Friedman et al suggest ɛ‐values be adopted for NBS 19 that do not take into account the ɛ‐values of NBS 20 (Solenhofen limestone). We believe that adoption of these proposals may lead to confusion in the stable isotope literature and to lack of correspondence between historic and future isotopic results. In sharp contrast to the results of Friedman et al (1), we find NBS 20 to be a satisfactory reference material if it is handled properly. Copyright © 1982, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
