The economic potential of these sandstones and conglomerates is currently being assessed. Springs abound at the contacts of rock units, and water from these springs supports abundant growths of bryophytes (mosses and liverworts). Water from 22 springs and associated bryophytes were sampled; two springs were found to contain apparently anomalous concentrations (normalized) of uranium — as much as 6.5 μg/L (ppb) in water and 1800 μg/g (ppm) in ash of mosses. Moss samples from both springs also contained anomalous concentrations of arsenic, and one contained highly anomalous amounts of beryllium. Water from a third spring contained slightly anomalous amounts of uranium, and two species of mosses at the spring contained anomalous uranium (400 and 700 μg/g) and high levels of both cadmium and lead. Water from a fourth spring was normal for uranium (0.18 μg/L), but the moss from the water contained a moderate uranium level and highly anomalous concentrations of lead, germanium, and thallium.

These results suggest that, in the Basin Creek area, moss sampling at springs may give a more reliable indication of uranium occurrence than would water sampling. The reason for this may be the ability of mosses to concentrate uranium and its associated pathfinder elements and to integrate uranium fluctuations that occur in the spring water over any period of time.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0375-6742(82)90004-8","usgsCitation":"Shacklette, H., and Erdman, J.A., 1982, Uranium in spring water and bryophytes at basin creek in central idaho: Journal of Geochemical Exploration, v. 17, no. 3, p. 221-236, https://doi.org/10.1016/0375-6742(82)90004-8.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"221","endPage":"236","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220717,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"central Idaho","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -117.11898816098233,\n 46.88064351215584\n ],\n [\n -117.11898816098233,\n 43.52384377775087\n ],\n [\n -112.3634806336367,\n 43.52384377775087\n ],\n [\n -112.3634806336367,\n 46.88064351215584\n ],\n [\n -117.11898816098233,\n 46.88064351215584\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"17","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bbdb8e4b08c986b3291af","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shacklette, H.T.","contributorId":61813,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shacklette","given":"H.T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361679,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Erdman, J. Radar responses from bedrock and gravel surfaces beneath windblown sand several centimeters to possibly meters thick delineate sand- and alluvium-filled valleys, some nearly as wide as the Nile Valley and perhaps as old as middle Tertiary. The now-vanished major river systems that carved these large valleys probably accomplished most of the erosional stripping of this extraordinarily flat, hyperarid region. Underfit and incised dry wadis, many superimposed on the large valleys, represent erosion by intermittent running water, probably during Quaternary pluvials. Stone Age artifacts associated with soils in the alluvium suggest that areas near the wadis may have been sites of early human occupation. The presence of old drainage networks beneath the sand sheet provides a geologic explanation for the locations of many playas and present-day oases which have been centers of episodic human habitation. Radar penetration of dry sand and soils varies with the wavelength of the incident signals (24 centimeters for the SIR-A system), incidence angle, and the electrical properties of the materials, which are largely determined by moisture content. The calculated depth of radar penetration of dry sand and granules, based on laboratory measurements of the electrical properties of samples from the Selima Sand Sheet, is at least 5 meters. Recent (September 1982) field studies in Egypt verified SIR-A signal penetration depths of at least 1 meter in the Selima Sand Sheet and in drift sand and 2 or more meters in sand dunes.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.218.4576.1004","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"McCauley, J., Schaber, G.G., Breed, C.S., Grolier, M., Haynes, C., Issawi, B., Elachi, C., and Blom, R., 1982, Subsurface valleys and geoarcheology of the eastern Sahara revealed by shuttle radar: Science, v. 218, no. 4576, p. 1004-1020, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.218.4576.1004.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"1004","endPage":"1020","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221767,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Egypt","otherGeospatial":"eastern Sahara","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              29.420206988982358,\n              26.493678313750593\n            ],\n            [\n              29.420206988982358,\n              23.313364774892932\n            ],\n            [\n              31.687518561025286,\n              23.313364774892932\n            ],\n            [\n              31.687518561025286,\n              26.493678313750593\n            ],\n            [\n              29.420206988982358,\n              26.493678313750593\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"218","issue":"4576","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9d94e4b08c986b31d91f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McCauley, J.F.","contributorId":26310,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCauley","given":"J.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361661,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schaber, G. Sounds were delivered via padded ear phones.
\n
\n
Averaging a few thousand trials at 20/s reveals early peaks at N5.4 (‘vertex’ negativity to a frontal reference, at 5.4 ms), P7.6, N8.8, P9.5 — probably equivalent to waves IV and VII of the typical mammalian auditory brainstem response (ABR). Averaging 100 trials at <4/s suffices to reveal a complex sequence of later peaks including N25, P80, N150 and P190; consistent smaller peaks are visible when several hundred trials are averaged.
\n
\n
Using tone pips with a rise and fall time of 2–5 ms the carrier frequency becomes important. Evoked potential wave forms are not the same at different frequencies, bringing out the fact that frequency is not a scalar that can be compensated for by intensity. Therefore the method was not used to obtain audiograms; however the largest EPs occur in the range of 1–1.5 kHz. EPs are found up to 35 kHz; almost no evoked potential is discernible at 40 kHz but the undistorted intensity available was limited. This is in reasonable agreement with the theoretical expectation for the upper limit of behavioral hearing from Heffner and Masterton based on head size and aquatic medium.</p.\n
\n
Among several ear phone placements, that over the external auditory meatus was the most effective, but only slightly so. The external canal is presumably fluid or tissue filled and sound enters over a large area.
\n
\n
Comparing data for two species on the most effective range of frequencies and the power spectra of their vocalizations, T. manatus is lower than T. inunguis in both respects.</p.\n
\n
The results show the utility and limitations of the method of recording extracranial evoked potentials to sounds, especially for large and valuable animals under makeshift conditions.
","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Comparative Physiology A","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer Verlag","publisherLocation":"Berlin","doi":"10.1007/BF00619792","usgsCitation":"Bullock, T.H., O'Shea, T., and McClune, M.C., 1982, Auditory evoked potentials in the West Indian Manatee (Sirenia: Trichechus manatus): Journal of Comparative Physiology A, v. 148, no. 4, p. 547-554, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00619792.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"547","endPage":"554","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":292104,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":292103,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00619792"}],"volume":"148","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ec7bc7e4b02bf5a7673ff3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bullock, Theodore H.","contributorId":56569,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bullock","given":"Theodore","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498069,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"O'Shea, Thomas J. 0000-0002-0758-9730","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0758-9730","contributorId":78071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O'Shea","given":"Thomas J.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":498070,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McClune, Michael C.","contributorId":104826,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McClune","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498071,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Populations from which inferences are to be drawn should be clearly defined, and conclusions should be limited to the range of the data analyzed.  Authors should be careful to avoid improper methods of plotting data and should clearly define the use of estimates of variance, standard deviation, standard error, or confidence intervals.  Biological and statistical significant are often confused by authors and readers.  Statistical hypothesis testing is a tool, and not every question should be answered by hypothesis testing.  Meeting assumptions of hypothesis tests is the responsibility of authors, and assumptions should be reviewed before a test is employed.  The use of statistical tools should be considered carefully both before and after gathering data.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wildlife Society Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Society","publisherLocation":"Bethesda, MD","usgsCitation":"Tacha, T.C., Warde, W.D., and Burnham, K.P., 1982, Use and interpretation of statistics in wildlife journals: Wildlife Society Bulletin, v. 10, no. 4, p. 355-362.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"355","endPage":"362","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":292145,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53edcd56e4b0f61b386d24b9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tacha, Thomas C.","contributorId":97434,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tacha","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498127,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Warde, William D.","contributorId":84669,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Warde","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498125,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Burnham, Kenneth P.","contributorId":95025,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burnham","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":189,"text":"Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":498126,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Viking Orbiter and terrestrial satellite images were examined at similar resolution to compare features of the Martian outflow channels to features produced by the movement of ice on earth. Many resemblances were found. They include the anastomoses, sinuosities, and U‐shaped cross profiles of valleys; hanging valleys; and linear scour marks on valley walls, grooves and ridges on valley floors, and streamlining of bedrock highs. The question of whether ice could have moved in the Martian environment is investigated. Since gradients on Martian channel floors are extremely low or even reversed, a certain thickness of ice is required to initiate glacial motion. If ice filled the Martian channels to the level of interior plateaus, flow could have occurred, even under present climatic conditions, although warmer climates in the past would have been more favorable. Additionally, if the channel fluids were brines, ice might have been wet based and would have moved readily by slipping over the ground. It is envisioned that springs or small catastrophic outbursts discharged fluids from structural outlets or chaotic terrains. The fluids built icings that may have grown into substantial masses and eventually flowed like glaciers down preexisting valleys. Alternatively, the fluids may have formed rivers or floods that formed ice jams and consolidated into icy masses in places where obstacles blocked their flow. These masses of ice or slush were probably episodic and temporary, but where they occurred within the channels, they may have produced landforms that are characteristic of glacial sculpture on earth.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/JB087iB12p09951","usgsCitation":"Lucchitta, B.K., 1982, Ice sculpture in the Martian outflow channels: Journal of Geophysical Research B: Solid Earth, v. 87, no. Measurements of potential gradients and hydraulic conductivity permitted indirect determination of all components of flow into and out of the cell except the recharge input, which was determined by difference.

All methods yielded consistent results on the order of 0.04-0.01 m yr.−1 These values, which represent 2–9% of the annual precipitation, are consistent with results of other studies on recharge throughout the prairies of North America.

Evaluation of site hydrology and stable-isotope data indicates that recharge is restricted in both time and place. Most recharge occurs in late spring and in the fall following heavy rainfall events. During these seasons the ground is not frozen and vegetation is not transpiring large amounts of water. Some recharge may occur during very heavy localized summer storms, but it is not considered volumetrically significant. Major permanent depressions on the site are a source of significant recharge. In addition, the extensive area of ephemeral standing water bodies that result from snowmelt can produce significant amounts of infiltration over the entire site.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0022-1694(82)90093-2","issn":"00221694","usgsCitation":"Rehm, B., Moran, S., and Groenewold, G., 1982, Natural groundwater recharge in an upland area of central North Dakota, U.S.A.: Journal of Hydrology, v. 59, no. 3-4, p. 293-314, https://doi.org/10.1016/0022-1694(82)90093-2.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"293","endPage":"314","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221048,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"central North Dakota","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -102.60876813870183,\n              49.012008277756365\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.60876813870183,\n              45.988974212508225\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.24442932052045,\n              45.988974212508225\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.24442932052045,\n              49.012008277756365\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.60876813870183,\n              49.012008277756365\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"59","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a630be4b0c8380cd7227b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rehm, B.W.","contributorId":73748,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rehm","given":"B.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361247,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moran, S.R.","contributorId":20888,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moran","given":"S.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361246,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Groenewold, G.H.","contributorId":14113,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Groenewold","given":"G.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361245,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The canyon's shelf portion underlies and is maintained by the Alaska Coastal Current (A.C.C.), which flows northeastward along the coast toward the northeast corner of the broad Chukchi Sea. Offshelf and onshelf advective processes are indicated by oceanographic measurements of other workers. These advective processes may play an important role in the production of bedforms that are found near the canyon head as well as in processes of erosion or non-deposition in the deeper canyon itself. Coarse sediments recovered from the canyon axis at 400 to 570 m indicate that there is presently significant flow along the canyon. The canyon hooks left at a point north of Point Barrow where the A.C.C. loses its coastal constriction. The left hook, as well as preferential west-wall erosion, continues down to the abyssal plain of the Canada Basin at 3800 m. A possible explanation for the preferential west-wall erosion along the canyon, at least for the upper few hundred meters, is that the occasional upwelling events, which cause nutrient-rich water to flow along the west wall would in turn cause larger populations of burrowing organisms to live there than on the east wall, and that these organisms cause high rates of bioerosion. This hypothesis assumes that the dominant factor in the canyon's erosion is biological activity, not current velocity. Sedimentary bedforms consisting of waves and furrows are formed in soft mud in a region on the shelf west of the canyon head; their presence there perhaps reflects: (a) the supply of fine suspended sediments delivered by the A.C.C. from sources to the south, probably the Yukon and other rivers draining northwestern Alaska; and (b) the westward transport of these suspended sediments by the prevailing Beaufort Gyre which flows along the outer shelf.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0025-3227(82)90061-5","usgsCitation":"Eittreim, S., Grantz, A., and Greenberg, J., 1982, Active geologic processes in Barrow Canyon, northeast Chukchi Sea: Marine Geology, v. 50, no. 1-2, p. 61-76, https://doi.org/10.1016/0025-3227(82)90061-5.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"61","endPage":"76","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220708,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Barrow Canyon, northeast Chukchi Sea","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -164.9782036874746,\n              72.59817606230985\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.9782036874746,\n              70.87893177138113\n            ],\n            [\n              -153.0605673497228,\n              70.87893177138113\n            ],\n            [\n              -153.0605673497228,\n              72.59817606230985\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.9782036874746,\n              72.59817606230985\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"50","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e6abe4b0c8380cd47592","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eittreim, Stephen","contributorId":102553,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eittreim","given":"Stephen","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361193,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Grantz, Arthur agrantz@usgs.gov","contributorId":2585,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grantz","given":"Arthur","email":"agrantz@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":361192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Greenberg, Jonathan","contributorId":9627,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greenberg","given":"Jonathan","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361194,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

CO2 uptake rates were a function of CO2 levels in the medium. At 2,500 microliters CO2 per liter (gas phase, equivalent to 1.79 milligrams per liter aqueous phase), Isoetes leaves showed continuous uptake in both the light and dark. At this CO2 level, photosynthetic rates were light saturated at about 10% full sunlight and were about 3-fold greater than dark CO2 uptake rates. Solutions of phenolic compounds and a water-immiscible mixture of polynuclear aromatic compounds accumulated in wetlands near the plant site and entered the aquifer. The concentration of phenolic compounds in the aqueous phase under the wetlands is about 30 mg/1 but decreases to less than 0.2 mg/1 at a distance of 430 m immediately downgradient from the source. Concentrations of naphthalene (the predominant polynuclear compound in the ground water) and sodium (selected as a conservative tracer) range from about 20 mg/1 and 430 mg/1 in the aqueous phase at the source to about 2 mg/1 and 120 mg/1 at 430 m downgradient, respectively. Phenolic compounds and naphthalene are disappearing faster than expected if only dilution were occurring. Sorption of phenolic compounds on aquifer sediments is negligible but naphthalene is slightly sorbed. Anaerobic biodegradation of phenolic compounds is primarily responsible for the observed attenuation. Methane was found only in water samples from the contaminated zone (2-20 mg/1). Methane-producing bacteria were found only in water from the contaminated zone. Methane was produced in laboratory cultures of contaminated water inoculated with bacteria from the contaminated zone. Evidence for anaerobic biodegradation of naphthalene under either field or laboratory conditions was not obtained.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1745-6584.1982.tb01390.x","usgsCitation":"Ehrlich, G.G., Goerlitz, D., Godsy, E., and Hult, M.F., 1982, Degradation of phenolic contaminants in ground water by anaerobic bacteria: St. Louis Park, Minnesota: Ground Water, v. 20, no. 6, p. 703-710, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1745-6584.1982.tb01390.x.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"703","endPage":"710","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321034,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -93.394775390625,\n 44.91965873229824\n ],\n [\n -93.394775390625,\n 44.95769222787594\n ],\n [\n -93.3354663848877,\n 44.95769222787594\n ],\n [\n -93.3354663848877,\n 44.91965873229824\n ],\n [\n -93.394775390625,\n 44.91965873229824\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"20","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2006-03-21","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"572dc02fe4b0dae0d5d8f06f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ehrlich, G. Covert feathers from adults had well-defined vermiculation patterns whereas feathers from yearlings lacked such markings. These age-related characters were confirmed by paired comparisons of feathers from the same captive birds in consecutive years and by discriminant analysis of feathers using densitometric measurements from known-age wild birds. Reflective densitometric measurements of greater secondary coverts for females and males were significantly different between 1- and 2-year-old and between 2- and 3-year-old canvasbacks. Greater secondary coverts were the best feathers for recognizing age-classes of males and females. Densitometric values indicate low variability among different observers and within samples.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3808222","usgsCitation":"Serie, J.R., Trauger, D.L., Doty, H.A., and Sharp, D., 1982, Age-class determination of canvasbacks: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 46, no. 4, p. 894-904, https://doi.org/10.2307/3808222.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"894","endPage":"904","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":134338,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"46","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afbe4b07f02db6960a7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Serie, Jerome R.","contributorId":174564,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Serie","given":"Jerome","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310773,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Trauger, David L.","contributorId":107682,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Trauger","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310774,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Doty, Harold A.","contributorId":17565,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doty","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310771,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Sharp, David E.","contributorId":12592,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sharp","given":"David E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310772,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Behavioral interactions between red and arctic foxes were evaluated during 9 trials conducted in a 4.05-ha enclosure near Woodworth, North Dakota. Each trial consisted of introducing a male-female pair of arctic foxes into the enclosure and allowing them to acclimate for approximately a week before releasing a female red fox into the enclosure, followed by her mate a few days later. In 8 of 9 trials, red foxes were dominant over arctic foxes during encounters. Activity of the arctic foxes decreased upon addition of red foxes. Arctic foxes tried unsuccessfully to defend preferred den, resting, and feeding areas. Even though the outcome of competition between red and arctic foxes in the Arctic is uncertain, the more aggressive red fox can dominate arctic foxes in direct competition for den sites and other limited resources.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3808220","usgsCitation":"Rudzinski, D., Graves, H., Sargeant, A., and Storm, G., 1982, Behavioral interactions of penned
