Duckling survival among broods reared by 8 radio-marked and 28 unmarked black ducks (Anas rubripes) was studied in Maine during 1977-80. The mean class III brood size of 5.26 yielded an apparent survival rate of 0.6152 from hatching to fledging. However, by using the method described by Mayfield (1961, 1975), survival was estimated as 0.4244, indicating that average class III brood size overestimated recruitment by 45%. Young ducklings (class Ia-IIa) had a survival rate of 0.6073, which was significantly lower than the 0.6988 rate for older ducklings. At least 1 unmarked and 5 radio-marked hens lost all their ducklings. Total-brood survival was estimated at 81%. The lower survival of ducklings of radio-marked hens (0.9517/day) compared with those from unmarked females (0.9895/day) was attributed to better documentation of total-brood loss for radio-equipped birds. Ducklings hatched after 14 June had lower survival (0.1007) than did young from earlier nests (0.3713). Our study showed a lower survival rate than usually is attributed to this species, with productivity approaching the low levels reported for black ducks breeding in estuarine habitats of the St. Lawrence River.

Based on replies during 217 of 456 howling sessions, the following recommendations were derived for using simulated howling as a census technique: (1) the best times of day are dusk and night; (2) July, August, and September are the best months; (3) precipitation and winds greater than 12 km/hour should be avoided; (4) a sequence of 5 single howls should be used, alternating 'flat' and 'breaking' howls; (5) trials should be repeated 3 times at about 2-minute intervals with the first trial at lower volume; and (6) the trial series should be repeated on 3 nights as close to each other as possible. Two censuses are described: a saturation census and a sampling census.

Eight radio-marked hens moved their broods an average of 1.2 km from the nest to rearing pond, but only 1 hen initiated secondary brood movements. Half of the 85 broods reared in the study area used only 3 wetlands, and most rearing ponds contained active beaver (Castor canadensis) colonies. Brood-rearing hens preferred Emergent ponds over lakes and Evergreen Scrub-Shrub wetlands, and did not occupy Dead Scrub-Shrub, Unconsolidated Bottom, or Aquatic Bed wetlands. Rearing ponds were large and possessed extensive areas of flooded mountain alder (Alnus incana), willow (Salix spp.), and herbaceous vegetation. Wetlands avoided by brood-rearing hens were those with large areas of open water, submergent aquatics, or ericaceous shrub vegetation.

poisoning","docAbstract":"The hazard of operational-type applications of zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) on a species closely related to the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes), was evaluated by feeding 16 Siberian ferrets (M. eversmanni) rats that had been killed by consumption of 2% zinc phosphide treated bait or by an oral dose of 40, 80, or 160 mg of Zn3P2. All ferrets accepted rats and a single emesis by each of 3 ferrets was the only evidence of acute intoxication. All ferrets learned to avoid eating gastrointestinal tracts of the rats. Subacute zinc phosphide toxicity in the ferrets was indicated by significant decreases (18-48%) in hemoglobin, increases of 35-91% in serum iron, and elevated levels of serum globulin, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Hemoglobin/iron, urea nitrogen/creatinine, and albumin/globulin ratios also were altered by the treatments. This study demonstrated that Siberian ferrets, or other species with a sensitive emetic reflex, are afforded a degree of protection from acute zinc phosphide poisoning due to its emetic action. The importance of toxicity associated with possible respiratory, liver, and kidney damage indicated by altered blood chemistries is not known.

They provide a valuable basis upon which management decisions are made. Unfortunately, significant inaccuracies in reporting permit data result from noncompliance, transmission errors, and changes in visitor plans. Data from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California show that in 1978, 97 percent of the parties obtained wilderness permits. Changes in visitor plans resulted in an over-reporting of total persons by 8 percent and of visitor nights by 23 percent. The latter was due primarily to shortening of trip length. Over-reporting was greatest when permits were issued well in advance of the trip. We aim here to clarify this dating confusion, and we present new radiometric data on ashes from the proposed stratotype section, Vrica, Italy which indicate that the Plio–Pleistocene boundary must be less than 2 Myr old. Biostratigraphical criteria—the first appearance datums (FADs) and last appearance datums (LADs) of plank-tonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton tied to the magnetic reversal chronology—suggest that this boundary may be nearer to 1.7 Myr. Attempts to make the boundary far older than this are without basis.

Preferential downslope movement of water and anions","docAbstract":"Perched water tables on hillsides in western Oregon potentially provide a means by which pollutants from agricultural and domestic sources may enter surface waters and consequently degrade the quality of these waters. This paper reports the results of experiments which were carried out to investigate the flow of solutes and water from buried line sources in and above perched water tables on three different hillsides in western Oregon. In the saturated soil and rock mantles of two hillsides, evidence suggests that water and solutes flow preferentially through large continuous voids. The evidence includes the very high maximum rate of anion movement downslope, the failure of pore velocities calculated from Darcy's Law to predict the rate and direction of anion movement, the short time before high levels of anions are detected downslope, and the spatial variability in the maximum rates of anion movement over the depth and width of sites. On the third hillside, tracer anion movement and soil water pressure measurements indicate that preferential flow occurs through large continuous pores during heavy rainfall while the surrounding soil and rock mantle remains unsaturated. Finally, experiments with Rodamine WT dye show that a variety of continuous voids of different origins and sizes conduct water and solutes preferentially in the soil and upper regions of rock on these hillsides.

Some factors affecting their development and longevity","docAbstract":"Perched water tables on hillsides located on the western border of the Willamette Valley in Oregon in some cases have the potential to transport pollutants from either domestic or agricultural sources downslope to streams, ponds, or reservoirs, resulting in the deterioration of the quality of these waters. In this paper, some factors responsible for the development and longevity of these potentially problem-causing perched water tables on three hillsides were examined. Analyses of hydraulic conductivity data and the relationships between rainfall, soil water pressure potential, and time suggest that permeable rock below 110 cm rather than clayey B horizons is mainly responsible for the development of perched water tables on upper convex slope positions on two of these hillsides. The data also suggest that subsurface flow from the upper convex regions contributed significant amounts of water to the lower convex slope positions. Further, perched water tables developed more rapidly, to a greater extent, and lasted longer in upper horizons of a lower concave region of slope where a shallow perched water table was already present at the onset of rainfall. Finally, perched water tables did not develop in the upper horizons on a third hillside that had no impermeable regions in the soil or upper rock mantle.

Mg2SiOais diamagnetic,a nd its heat capacity follows a normal sigmoidal curve at low temperatures. co2sioa shows a single sharp )r-type\ntransition at 49.85+0102 K associated with the antiferromagnetic ordering of the magnetic moments of the Co2+ ions into a collinear spin arrangement below 49.8 K. In contrast to co2sioa, Mn2Sioah ast wo transitionsi n ci, a sharpL -typet ransitiona t 47.3g10.05K and a smaller \"shoulder\" in Ci centered near 12 K. The upper transition corresponds to the paramagnetic (disordered) to collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of the Mn2+ moments,\nwhereas the shoulder near 12 K corresponds to the change from the collinear to a canted spin structure. Our calorimetric values for the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetictr ansition temperature (N6el Temperature) are in excellent agreement with those obtained by powder magnetic susceptibility measurements, 49t2 K and 5015 K for co2Sioa and Mn2Sioa respectively.\n\nThe thermal Debye temperature, 0$, of Mg2Sioa calculated from our c$ measurements between 6.3 and 13.8 K is 768+15 K and agrees well with the elastic vaiue ofi of 758 K based on the mean sound velocity calculated from the room temperature elastic stiffness constants (ci:) of Graham and Barsch.\n\nAt 298.15K (25\"c) the molar heat capacitiesa re 118.6,1 28.7, and 133.4J /(mol . Classes of compounds identified include n-alkanes, fatty acids, dicarboxylic acids, aromatic acids and aldehydes, phenols, resin acids, terpenes, and insect juvenile hormones. The most probable source of these compounds is from pyrolysis of plant and soil organic matter during and after the eruption. The toxicity of selected compounds and their environmental significance are discussed.

The plants had little effect on the activity of rotenone and antimycin but substantially reduced the activity of permethrin and pydrin (synthetic pyrethroids). Bentonite severely inhibited the activity of all chemicals tested. Salicylanilide I was affected least and pydrin most (27 times as much pydrin was required when I g/liter of bentonite was present in 96-hour tests). The efficacy of the registered fish toxicants rotenone and antimycin is probably not significantly affected by vegetation under field conditions, but is greatly reduced by suspended bentonite clay.

Identification of chemicals implicated in these die-offs is difficult and sometimes conclusions are solely circumstantial. However, when marked depression (inhibition) of brain ChE activity accompanies organophosphorus or carbamate residues in body tissues or ingesta, cause-effect diagnosis is enhanced. To achieve this end, normal brain ChE activity is estimated for controls of the affected species and then die-off specimens are individually evaluated for evidence of ChE inhibition. This approach to evaluation of antiChE poisoning may also be used to monitor exposure of vertebrates to field application of organophosphorus or carbamate pesticides. Problems associated with this kind of evaluation, and the main topic of this report, include variability of brain ChE activity among species, postmortem influences of ambient conditions (storage or field) on ChE activity, and differential patterns of ChE activity when inhibited by organophosphorus or carbamate compounds. Other topics discussed are the ChE assay procedure, example case reports and interpretation, and research needed for improving the diagnostic utility of ChE activity in a field situation. Compared with tundrius, anatum is larger and darker, and the white auricular area is less extensive in proportion to the black malar stripe (White 1968a). This paper presents morphological information from two migrant populations. Also, measurements are compared with F. p. tundrius described by White (1968a,b), although shrinkage in study skins (the source of White's measurements) was recently documented (Fjelds• 1980) and confounds direct comparison.

sewage sludge","docAbstract":"Metal concentrations in soil may be elevated considerably when metal‐laden sewage sludge is spread on land. Metals in earthworms (Lumbricidae) from agricultural fields amended with sewage sludge and from experimental plots were examined to determine if earthworms are important in transferring metals in soil to wildlife. Earthworms from four sites amended with sludge contained significantly (P < 0.05) more Cd (12 times), Cu (2.4 times), Zn (2.0 times), and Pb (1.2 times) than did earthworms from control sites, but the concentrations detected varied greatly and depended on the particular sludge application. Generally, Cd and Zn were concentrated by earthworms relative to soil, and Cu, Pb, and Ni were not concentrated. Concentrations of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb in earthworms were correlated (P < 0.05) with those in soil. The ratio of the concentration of metals in earthworms to the concentration of metals in soil tended to be lower in contaminated soil than in clean soil. Concentrations of Cd as high as 100 ppm (dry wt) were detected in earthworms from soil containing only 2 ppm Cd. These concentrations are considered hazardous to wildlife that eat worms. Liming soil decreased Cd concentrations in earthworms slightly (P < 0.05) but had no discernible effect on concentrations of the other metals studied. High Zn concentrations in soil substantially reduced Cd concentrations in earthworms.

Later analyses of both guano and bats from two roosts indicated a correspondence between levels of organochlorine residues in guano and in bat carcasses from the same colony (CLARK & PROUTY 1976). Gray myotis (mytosis grisescens) were found dead with lethal brain levels of dieldrin in two colonies where dieldrin levels in guano were high relative to other colonies (CLARK et al. 1978, 1980). We collected and analyzed both guano samples and bats found dead or killed accidentally during handling from numerous roosts of several bat species. The objective of this study was to determine whether a correlation existed between organochlorine residues in guano and in bat carcasses.

The toxicity of Prudhoe Bay crude oil and No. 2 fuel oil to embryos of mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) decreased only after 3 weeks and 2 weeks of weathering on a large container of fresh water (SZARO et al. 1980). Ten microliters (uL) of 4 week-old Libyan crude oil caused a significant increase in mortality among embryos of Louisiana herons (Hydranassa tricolor) but the same amount of fresh oil did not cause a significant increase in mortality. However, embryos of laughing gulls (Larus atricilla) were not significantly affected by I0 uL of 4 or 8 week-old weathered Libyan crude oil nor i0 UL of fresh oil (MACKO& KING 1980). Crude ell (i0 uL) recovered from the water surface (age unknown, but presumably slightly weathered) near the IXTOC-I oil spill site in the Gulf of Mexico did not significantly reduce the survival of mallard embryos by day 18 of incubation (D. HOFFMAN, unpublished data).

Mortality of cricket frogs was directly related to the parathion concentration in the water. Frogs from the 1.0- and 10-ppm groups accumulated 0.08 and 4.6 ppm parathion, respectively. One of four American kestrels (Falco sparverius) fed frogs from the 10-ppm group died from organophosphate poisoning less than 3 h after consuming five frogs. Most of the waters sampled are several thousand to more than 10,000 years old, and some are 80 kilometers from their point of recharge.
