Samples studied are from the Upper Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous Great Valley sequence, Upper Cretaceous Hornbrook Formation, Eocene Montgomery Creek Formation, and Oligocene(?) Weaverville Formation. Cretaceous samples that survived the remagnetization have a mean remanence direction that is very close to the expected direction of the Cretaceous magnetic field at the locality of the Klamath Mountains. Data from both primary and remagnetized samples suggest the possibility of 11.5° ± 15.8° of post-Cretaceous clockwise rotation of the Klamath Mountains province. None of the data from either the primary or remagnetized samples shows evidence of the large amounts (∼ 70°) of clockwise rotation that other workers have measured for the lower Tertiary of the Oregon Coast Range. Our data indicate that the Oregon Coast Range and Klamath Mountains province did not behave as a single rigid block during the early Tertiary. They also suggest that any post-Oligocene rotation of the Klamath Mountains province is less than the approximately 30° post-Oligocene rotation recently proposed for a combined Oregon Coast Range–Klamath Mountains–Cascade Range block.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1982)10<82:PSOSCA>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Mankinen, E.A., and Irwin, W., 1982, Paleomagnetic study of some Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Klamath Mountains province, California: Geology, v. 10, no. 2, p. 82-87, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1982)10<82:PSOSCA>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"82","endPage":"87","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":355231,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Klamath Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.00292610823843,\n              40.15010694428679\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.00292610823843,\n              41.96606648297217\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.73146610355025,\n              41.96606648297217\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.73146610355025,\n              40.15010694428679\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.00292610823843,\n              40.15010694428679\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mankinen, Edward A. 0000-0001-7496-2681 emank@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7496-2681","contributorId":1054,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mankinen","given":"Edward","email":"emank@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":738642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Irwin, William P.","contributorId":12889,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Irwin","given":"William P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":738643,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Saturn's atmosphere contains persistent oval cloud features reminiscent of features on Jupiter. Smaller irregular features track out a pattern of zonal winds that is symmetric about Saturn's equator and appears to extend to great depth. Winds are predominantly eastward and reach 500 meters per second at the equator. Titan has several haze layers with significantly varying optical properties and a northern polar \"collar\" that is dark at short wavelengths. Several satellites have been photographed at substantially improved resolution. Enceladus' surface ranges from old, densely cratered terrain to relatively young, uncratered plains crossed by grooves and faults. Tethys has a crater 400 kilometers in diameter whose floor has domed to match Tethys' surface curvature and a deep trench that extends at least 270° around Tethys' circumference. Hyperion is cratered and irregular in shape. Iapetus' bright, trailing hemisphere includes several dark-floored craters, and Phoebe has a very low albedo and rotates in the direction opposite to that of its orbital revolution with a period of 9 hours. Within Saturn's rings, the \"birth\" of a spoke has been observed, and surprising azimuthal and time variability is found in the ringlet structure of the outer B ring. These observations lead to speculations about Saturn's internal structure and about the collisional and thermal history of the rings and satellites.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.215.4532.504","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Smith, B., Soderblom, L., Batson, R., Bridges, P., Inge, J., Masursky, H., Shoemaker, E., Beebe, R., Boyce, J., Briggs, G., Bunker, A., Collins, S., Hansen, C., Johnson, T.V., Mitchell, J., Terrile, R., Cook, A., Cuzzi, J., Pollack, J.B., Danielson, G., Ingersoll, A., Davies, M.E., Hunt, G., Morrison, D., Owen, T., Sagan, C., Veverka, J., Strom, R., and Suomi, V., 1982, A new look at the Saturn system: The Voyager 2 images: Science, v. 215, no. 4532, p. 504-537, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.215.4532.504.","productDescription":"34 p.","startPage":"504","endPage":"537","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221448,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Enceladus, Hyperion, Iapetus, Phoebe, Saturn, Tethys, Titan","volume":"215","issue":"4532","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e4a5e4b0c8380cd467d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, B.A.","contributorId":17616,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"B.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361118,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Soderblom, L.","contributorId":106244,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Soderblom","given":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361143,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Batson, R.","contributorId":25690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Batson","given":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361121,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bridges, P.","contributorId":95198,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bridges","given":"P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361140,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Inge, J.","contributorId":21687,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Inge","given":"J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361119,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Masursky, H.","contributorId":33823,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Masursky","given":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361126,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Shoemaker, E.","contributorId":65989,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shoemaker","given":"E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361131,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Beebe, R.","contributorId":91627,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beebe","given":"R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361138,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Boyce, J.","contributorId":24918,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boyce","given":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361120,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9},{"text":"Briggs, G.","contributorId":16567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Briggs","given":"G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361117,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":10},{"text":"Bunker, A.","contributorId":84079,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bunker","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":11},{"text":"Collins, S.A.","contributorId":63947,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Collins","given":"S.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361130,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":12},{"text":"Hansen, C.J.","contributorId":72530,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hansen","given":"C.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361135,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":13},{"text":"Johnson, T. Glaciers were advancing strongly by 24,000 yr ago; they built moraines near the south flank of the Brooks Range, retreated briefly about 22,000 to 20,000 yr B.P., then readvanced at least one more time into their terminal zones. Glaciation was accompanied by alluviation of the Koyukuk and Kobuk drainage systems and by periglacial processes that resemble those taking place today farther north and at higher altitudes. Moraines near the south flank of the range were being revegetated by 13,500 yr B.P. A strong final readvance into end-moraine belts of some northern valleys occurred about 13,000 to 12,500 yr ago, and this event may be synchronous with less extensive glacier readvances in upper valleys of the Koyukuk region. Upper valleys were largely deglaciated by 11,800 yr B.P.

Dated Stratigraphic sections from the northern Alaska Range show similar ages for initiation and close of glaciation and also suggest a possible interstadial episode about 20,000 yr ago. Scanty records of fluctuations during ice wastage probably reflect the general scarcity of datable wood, peat, and organic soils between about 19,500 and 13,500 yr ago. The Brooks Range and Alaska Range chronologies closely approximate glacial successions determined else-where in eastern Beringia and in Siberia. Advance and retreat of glaciers throughout this region evidently were associated with widespread climatic changes that also controlled the late Wisconsin history of the Laurentide ice sheet.

The Itkillik II and late Itkillik phases of former usage are part of a single glaciation that was entirely separate from the preceding Itkillik I ice advance. For this reason, the local term \"Walker Lake Glaciation\" is here extended to the last major glaciation of the entire southern Brooks Range, and use of Itkillik phases should be discontinued. The term \"Itkillik Glaciation\" is hereby restricted to the next older ice advance, in accord with its original definition.

Cold and dry conditions during the last glaciation of eastern Beringia are indicated by (1) relatively small mountain glaciers, (2) slight (200-m) depression of glaciation limits below modern values, (3) periglacial features indicating severe frost action on slopes with little protective plant cover, (4) widespread accretion of eolian sand, (5) low pollen influx rates, (6) scarcity of radiocarbon-datable organic remains, and (7) general absence of carbonaceous paleosols. Plant growth may have been much more restricted than generally believed, with relatively low capacity to support grazing animals and human hunting bands.
","language":"English","publisher":"GSA","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1982)93<700:ALPGCF>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Hamilton, T.D., 1982, A late Pleistocene glacial chronology for the southern Brooks Range: Stratigraphic record and regional significance: GSA Bulletin, v. 93, no. 8, p. 700-716, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1982)93<700:ALPGCF>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"700","endPage":"716","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":371601,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Southern Brooks Range","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -156.796875,\n 66.51326044311185\n ],\n [\n -148.88671874999997,\n 66.51326044311185\n ],\n [\n -148.88671874999997,\n 68.65655498475735\n ],\n [\n -156.796875,\n 68.65655498475735\n ],\n [\n -156.796875,\n 66.51326044311185\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"93","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hamilton, T. The seamount is considered representative of the early phase of Hawaiian volcanism because of its youth, small size, and location near the melting anomaly. Seventeen dredge stations recovered transitional basalt, alkalic basalt, and basanite, in addition to the expected tholeiitic basalt. Four flows of alkalic basalt contain common small dunite xenoliths. The recovered samples have thin palagonite rinds and almost no manganese on the glassy surfaces; we estimate that the lavas are less than about 4,000 yr old, and many are less than 1,000 yr old. The oceanic crust is thought to be a remnant of the Kula(?) plate that was isolated within what is now the Bering Sea when the proto-Aleutian arc began to form between the Alaska Peninsula and Kamchatka in late Mesozoic or earliest Tertiary times. Prior to the formation of the Aleutian arc, the Kula(?) plate moved NW, directly underthrusting eastern Siberia; the plate’s eastern edge either obliquely underthrust or slid past the Bering Sea margin along a transform boundary.

The Koryak Range in eastern Siberia is composed in part of mélange units that include Palaeozoic and Mesozoic allochthonous blocks juxtaposed within a matrix of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Structural trends suggest that these blocks were accreted into the Koryak area from the south along an ancient subduction zone formed by underthrusting of the Kula(?) plate.

The base of the Bering Sea continental margin that extends from eastern Siberia to the Alaska Peninsula—the so-called Beringian margin—is underlain by a thick (7–10 km) sedimentary section along the base of the slope. Rocks dredged from the basement exposed farther up the slope (1500–2000 m deep) include shallow-water Upper Jurassic sandstone that is unconformably overlain by shallow-water Eocene to Miocene diatomaceous mudstone. Fauna in the dredge samples indicate that the shelf edge has subsided several kilometres since late Palaeogene time, perhaps in response to the cessation of motion relative to the adjacent oceanic plate and subsequent sediment loading of the oceanic plate.

Uplift of the former plate boundary exposed in the Koryak Range occurred principally in late Cenozoic time, and collapse of the adjacent plate boundary, the Beringian margin, began in earliest Tertiary time and has continued to the present. Both tectonic events occurred after the site of active plate collision shifted south to near the present Aleutian Trench. We are uncertain as to why these two ancient, yet adjacent former plate boundaries should behave so differently, i.e. why one area was folded and uplifted while the other was extensionally deformed and subsided, both apparently in response to the cessation of convergent or strike-slip plate motion.
","language":"English","publisher":"The Geological Socety","doi":"10.1144/GSL.SP.1982.010.01.13","usgsCitation":"Marlow, M.S., Cooper, A.K., Scholl, D.W., and McLean, H., 1982, Ancient plate boundaries in the Bering Sea region: Geological Society, London, Special Publications, v. 10, p. 201-211, https://doi.org/10.1144/GSL.SP.1982.010.01.13.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"201","endPage":"211","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371022,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Bering Sea","volume":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marlow, M. The network was designed to provide indication of lateral movement of saline water in the upper part of the Hawthorn Formation; to provide trends in water levels; and to provide background data from: (1) the aquifer in the upper part of the Hawthorn Formation; (2) the aquifer in the lower part of the Hawthorn Formation and upper part of the Tampa Limestone; and (3) the surficial aquifer. The monitoring well network consists of 77 wells.

Data collected in this network since 1978, as well as data collected from selected wells in the network prior to 1978, are compiled in this report. These data include water-quality data from 69 wells, water-level data from 29 wells, and lithologic logs from 18 wells. Rapid growth and extensive development in recent years have imposed progressively greater stress on the water resources of the islands.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are underlain by a series of geologic formations containing some zones of relatively freshwater and other zones of more mineralized, or even very saline water. Two aquifers are the principal sources of water supply on the islands. The upper aquifer is in the upper part of the Hawthorn Formation. The lower aquifer is in the lower part of the Hawthorn Formation and the underlying upper part of the Tampa Limestone. Both aquifers are under sufficient artesian pressure to permit wells to flow at land surface. The potentiometric surface of the lower Hawthorn-upper Tampa aquifer has been lowered in the central part of Sanibel Island where the Island Water Association operates about 10 wells that tap the lower aquifer.

In 1977, the average pumpage from these 10 wells was 1.4 million gallons per day. The water is processed through a desalination plant before distribution. In 1977, the total volume of water withdrawn from both the lower and upper aquifers for all purposes was 690 million gallons, an average of about 1.9 million gallons per day.

Water from the upper Hawthorn aquifer during the period 1975-77 contained dissolved solids concentrations ranging from 721 to 2,390 milligrams per liter. Water from the lower Hawthorn-upper Tampa aquifer during the same period contained concentrations ranging from 1,700 to 4,130 milligrams per liter. Water from both aquifers is hard and contains relatively high concentrations of sodium, sulfate, and chloride.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The report recommended use of the Pearson Type III distribution with log transformation of the data (log-Pearson Type III distribution) as a base method for flood flow frequency studies. As pointed out in that report, further studies were needed covering various aspects of flow frequency determinations.

In March 1976, Bulletin 17, \"Guidelines for Determining Flood Flow Frequency\" was issued by the Water Resources Council. The guide was an extension and update of Bulletin No. 15. It provided a more complete guide for flood flow frequency analysis incorporating currently accepted technical methods with sufficient detail to promote uniform application. It was limited to defining flood potentials in terms of peak discharge and exceedance probability at locations where a systematic record of peak flood flows is available. The recommended set of procedures was selected from those used or described in the literature prior to 1976, based on studies conducted for this purpose at the Center for Research in Water Resources of the University of Texas at Austin (summarized in Appendix 14) and on studies by the Work Group on Flood Flow Frequency.

The \"Guidelines\" were revised and reissued in June 1977 as Bulletin 17A. Bulletin 17B is the latest effort to improve and expand upon the earlier publications. Bulletin 17B provides revised procedures for weighting a station skew value with the results from a generalized skew study, detecting and treating outliers, making two station comparisons, and computing confidence limits about a frequency curve. The Work Group that prepared this revision did not address the suitability of the original distribution or the generalized skew map.

Major problems are encountered when developing guides for flood flow frequency determinations. There is no procedure or set of procedures that can be adopted which, when rigidly applied to the available data, will accurately define the flood potential of any given watershed. Statistical analysis alone will not resolve all flood frequency problems. As discussed in subsequent sections of this guide, elements of risk and uncertainty are inherent in any flood frequency analysis. User decisions must be based on properly applied procedures and proper interpretation of results considering risk and uncertainty. Therefore, the judgment of a professional experienced in hydrologic analysis will enhance the usefulness of a flood frequency analysis and promote appropriate application.

It is possible to standarize many elements of flood frequency analysis. This guide describes each major element of the process of defining the flood potential at a specific location in terms of peak discharge and exceedance probability. Use is confined to stations where available records are adequate to warrant statistical analysis of the data. Special situations may require other approaches. In those cases where the procedures of this guide are not followed, deviations must be supported by appropriate study and accompanied by a comparison of results using the recommended procedures.

As a further means of achieving consistency and improving results, the Work Group recommends that studies be coordinated when more than one analyst is working currently on data for the same location. This recommendation holds particularly when defining exceedance probabilities for rare events, where this guide allows more latitude.

Flood records are limited. As more years of record become available at each location, the determination of flood potential may change. Thus, an estimate may be outdated a few years after it is made. Additional flood data alone may be sufficient reason for a fresh assessment of the flood potential. When making a new assessment, the analyst should incorporate in his study a review of earlier estimates. Where differences appear, they should be acknowledged and explained.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70275162","usgsCitation":"Interagency Advisory Committee on Water Data, 1982, Guidelines for determining flood flow frequency: Bulletin #17B of the Hydrology Subcommittee (Revised September 1981, Editorial Corrections March 1982): Bulletin 17B, 194 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70275162.","productDescription":"194 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":503223,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70275162/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":503222,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70275162/report-thumb.jpg"}],"edition":"Revised September 1981, Editorial Corrections March 1982","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Interagency Advisory Committee on Water Data","contributorId":370138,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Interagency Advisory Committee on Water Data","id":959854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is strongly suspected that acidic deposition has adversely affected aquatic resources in Scandinavia and North America. While substantial resources are being devoted to understanding the causative factors associated with surface water acidification, much less research is being conducted on mitigative strategies. Mitigative techniques involving liming may be useful for short-term protection of specific component of aquatic communities or for renovation of seriously impacted aquatic ecosystems.
\n
\n
The selection of effective liming strategies is based on an integrated understanding of the following key factors: biological systems, water chemistry, sediment chemistry, hydrology, and watershed characteristics, effectiveness of neutralizing materials, and application techniques. Research in Scandinavia, Canada, and the U.S. has led to a partial understanding of some of the key factors for successful neutralization of surface waters (Bengtsson, 1982; Fraser and Britt, 1982). However, conflicting results of liming operations and experiments have been reported. (Fraser et al., 1982; Fraser and Britt, 1982; Sverdrup and Bjerle, 1982). Additional research is required to improve the ability of scientists and resource managers to select effective liming strategies.
\n
\n
An International Liming workshop was convened during 19-25 September 1982 at the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories. The major objective of this workshop were:
\n
\n
- To identify the most critical deficiencies in the scientific understanding of liming techniques and their long-term consequences.
\n
\n
- To develop and document a research strategy to address information deficiencies that are pertinent to the protection or renovation of acidic surface waters in the United States.
\n
\n
The participants who contributed to this workshop are listed in Table 1.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","collaboration":"Performed for the Eastern Energy and Land Use Team, Division of Biological Services, Research and Development, Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of the Interior","usgsCitation":"Schreiber, R.K., 1982, Liming of acidified waters: issues and research - a report of the International Liming Workshop: FWS/OBS 80/40.14, vi, 36 p.","productDescription":"vi, 36 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":290832,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57ff901ae4b0824b2d16e113","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schreiber, R. Drilling indicated that: (II the spurs and grooves formed over at least 5 m of carbonate reef sand: (2) the underlying Pleistocene surface is essentially flat and therefore could not control or initiate spacing of spurs or grooves; (3) only the thin seaward ends of spurs are rooted on underlying bedrock: and (4) the interior of the Millepora-encrusted spurs is composed primarily of Acropora palmata. a species no longer abundant on this reef. From the drilling of Looe Key Reef and from other observations along the reef tract, we propose that most shallow spurs and grooves in active coral reef areas of the Caribbean are constructional in origin and not initiated or controlled by bedrock topography. Spurs and grooves in non-coral reef areas adjacent to shorelines, however. are clearly of erosional origin and have a close spacing distinctly different from spurs and grooves known to be of constructional origin. These observations indicate that spurs and grooves in deeper (> 15 m) fore-reef areas off Florida, which have the same geometry as the shoreline features. are erosional in origin and therefore formed on a shoreline during a lower stand of sea level.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"The reef and man: proceedings of the Fourth International Coral Reef Symposium, Manila, Philippines, 18-22 May 1981","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"Marine Sciences Center, University of the Philippines","publisherLocation":"Quezon City, Philippines","usgsCitation":"Shinn, E., Hudson, J., Robbin, D.M., and Lidz, B.H., 1982, Spurs and grooves revisited: construction versus erosion, Looe Key Reef, Florida, in The reef and man: proceedings of the Fourth International Coral Reef Symposium, Manila, Philippines, 18-22 May 1981, p. 475-483.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"475","endPage":"483","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":293039,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Looe Key Reef","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -81.533973,24.467259 ], [ -81.533973,24.62965 ], [ -81.277854,24.62965 ], [ -81.277854,24.467259 ], [ -81.533973,24.467259 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53fd9f68e4b0adaeea6c4e83","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Gomez, Edgardo D.","contributorId":112055,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gomez","given":"Edgardo","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509960,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Birkeland, C.E.","contributorId":113609,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Birkeland","given":"C.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509961,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Buddemeier, R.
