The peak discharges for recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 years were determined for each station and are given in tabular form where appropriate.</p><p>Features that define the reference width vary with location and stream type. A discussion is given of the features that were used in measuring reference widths.</p><p>The relation between the magnitude of floods of various frequencies and the reference width and main-channel slope was reliable with a standard error of about 65 percent for most of the areas of the State; however, no reliable relation could be found for many stream channels in a large area of southeastern New Mexico, and it is recommended that the relation not be used in that area. The reasons for this difficulty is believed to be due to recent channel entrenchment in the area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The maximum radium-226 activity was 90 piC/liter in water from a shallow well in Polk County. The sampling reconnaissance was generally limited to areas of active phosphate mining and areas of undisturbed phosphate deposits. Most of the sampling was from water wells. Thirteen surface-water samples were collected in the Peace River drainage basin. The maximum radium-226 detected in surface-water samples was 3.6 piC/liter in Little Charlie Creek at State Road 664A in Hardee County. Mapping of the Precambrian rock units enables the recognition of four major units which are, from bottom to top, 1) Granitic Gneiss (alaskite), 2) Lower Marble, 3) Major Gneiss, and 4) Upper Marble. Additionally, lenses of amphibolite and granite occur as intrusives within this succession. These rock units have been complexly deformed by three major folding episodes, and by two distinctly different styles of faulting. The result has been to produce large northeast-southwest trending dome and basin structures. Most recharge to the aquifer originates in or near the outcrop areas of the Madison in the Bighorn Mountains and Black Hills, and most discharge occurs through springs and wells. Flow through the aquifer in the modeled areas was approximately 200 cubic feet per second. The aquifer can probably sustain increased ground-water withdrawals of up to several tens of cubic feet per second, but these withdrawals probably would significantly lower the potentiometric surface in the Madison aquifer in a large part of the basin. During 1972-74, snowmelt runoff (April-July) accounted for 65 percent of the water and sediment discharge. Approximately 90 percent of the sediment is transported in suspension.</p><p>Sediment measured at 16 gutterflow stations at the base of highway cut-slopes indicates that less than 100 tons (91 tonnes) of fine sediment per year are contributed to the lake from all California State highway cuts. By 1850 A.D. the tidal marshes of the estuary, including those of the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta, covered an area nearly twice as large as the area of open water. Nearly 95 percent of these marshes have been diked or filled during the past 125 years. Species distributions along leveled transects at six tidal marshes indicate that elevation and water salinity are the principal ecological factors that-control the distribution of seed plants in the remaining natural tidal marshes of the northern San Francisco Bay estuary. Marsh surfaces situated near mean tide level are populated by robust monocotyledons (e.g., Spartina foliosa, Scirpus californicus), whereas surfaces situated near high-tide levels support dicotyledons and a few small monocotyledonous species (e.g., Salicornia virginica, Distichlis spicata). The early production is not known, but the recorded production in 1939-54 is 765,768 fine ounces gold and 1,002,029 ounces silver.</p>\n<p>The district is underlain by a sequence of pyroclastic and clastic rocks which probably belong to the Murdama Group. From oldest to youngest the units are andesite, lower agglomerate, lower tuff, upper agglomerate, and upper tuff. These units have been tilted northerly, forming a homocline, and they are complexly broken by six sets of faults; three of these sets, which strike N.25&deg;-30&deg;W., N.10&deg;W. to N.20&deg;E., and N.30&deg;-60'E., contain productive quartz veins.</p>\n<p>The principal ore minerals are pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and minor tetrahedrite, argentite, and native gold and silver. The gold and silver occurs finely disseminated in the veins and in the altered selvages of the veins. Widespread potassic and propylitic alteration accompanied the ore-forming processes. Potassium feldspar was introduced during an early stage of vein formation. Isotopic analyses of lead in vein potassium feldspar and galena yield a model age of about 900-1050 million years with the possibility of the original lead source having been remobilized about 600 million years ago. Total water requirements within the region are projected to rise sharply from 14 million acre-feet (17 cubic kilometres) in 1970 to nearly 26 million acre-feet (32 cubic kilometres) in 2020. About half of the water used in 1970 was ground water.</p>\n<p>An estimated total of 1.04 billion acre-feet (1,280 cubic kilometres) of recoverable water containing less than 3,000 milligrams per litre dissolved solids is stored above a depth of 400 feet (122 metres) in the aquifers of the region. In addition, part of an estimated 3.28 billion acre-feet (4,040 cubic kilometres) of water in storage below 400 feet (122 metres) is recoverable. Although not all of the ground water in storage is recoverable, a significant amount is available for development; and an enormous quantity is accessible should occasions prompt its use on a time-limited basis.</p>\n<p>The total steady-state yield (amount of water that approximates the maximum perennial replenishment from precipitation) of the region's aquifers is about 4.6 million acre-feet (5.7 cubic kilometres) annually, or about 2.3 times the ground-water usage in 1970 if the large mining draft on the High Plains is not considered as part of the total steady-state yield. Because of the large quantity of recoverable groundwater in storage, the steady-state yield can be augmented for a very long time on a \"deferred\" basis, whereby the economic use of the water that is withdrawn from storage in excess of the steady-state yield may result in a strengthened economy.</p>\n<p>An important goal in programs for meeting future water needs should be to identify the full potential of the available ground-water resources. The subsurface reservoirs may be utilized not only as sources of fresh and treatable water, but as storage facilities for other freshwater supplies and as possible sources of geothermal energy. Some saline-water reservoirs may be suitable for liquid-waste storage or disposal.</p>\n<p>Large-scale and unregulated ground-water pumping may result in hydrologic problems such as declining water levels, streamflow depletion, and land-surface subsidence; but studies on proper development of the ground-water reservoirs could provide solutions to many of the problems. Water rights and other legal concepts should be based on sound hydrologic principles to assist development of water resources in an orderly and efficient manner.</p>\n<p>Because significant amounts of ground water are available, the opportunities for expanded and conjunctive use of ground water and surface water should be considered in regional plans for water development and conservation.
