Part I examines the effect of a spatially variable static strike-slip distribution across the slip surface. The tilt components as a function of distance parallel, or perpendicular, to the strike of the slip surface are displayed for different slip-versus-distance profiles. Part II examines the effect of spatially and temporally variable slip distributions across the dislocation loop on the quasi-static tilts at the free surface of an elastic half space. The model discussed in part II may be used to generate theoretical tilt versus time curves produced by creep events.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76578","usgsCitation":"McHugh, S., 1976, Documentation of programs that compute 1) static tilts for a spatially variable slip distribution, and 2) quasi-static tilts produced by an expanding dislocation loop with a spatially variable slip distribution: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-578, 1-43, 2-100 leaves :ill. ;28 cm.; (149 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76578.","productDescription":"1-43, 2-100 leaves :ill. ;28 cm.; (149 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142612,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0578/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38133,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0578/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db636157","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McHugh, Stuart","contributorId":8852,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McHugh","given":"Stuart","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161124,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

For convenience, all fluctuations in the local tilt field of less than 24 hours duration will be designated SP (i.e., short period) tilt events. Three basic categories of waveshape appearance are defined, and the rules for naming the waveforms are outlined. Examples from tilt observations at four central California sites are provided. \r\n\r\nSection II contains some coseismic tilt data. Fourteen earthquakes in central California, ranging in magnitude from 2.9 to 5.2, were chosen for study on four tiltmeters within 10 source dimensions of the epicenters. The raw records from each of the four tiltmeters at the times of the earthquakes were photographed and are presented in this section. \r\n\r\nSection III contains documentation of computer programs used in the analysis of the short period tilt data. Program VECTOR computes the difference vector of a tilt event and displays the sequence of events as a head-to-tail vector plot. Program ONSTSP 1) requires two component digitized tilt data as input, 2) scales and plots the data, and 3) computes and displays the amplitude, azimuth, and normalized derivative of the tilt amplitude. Program SHARPS computes the onset sharpness, (i.e., the normalized derivative of the tilt amplitude at the onset of the tilt event) as a function of source-station distance from a model of creep-related tilt changes. Program DSPLAY plots the digitized data.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey, National Center for Earthquake Research,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76750","usgsCitation":"McHugh, S., 1976, Tilt changes of short duration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-750, 210 leaves in various pagings :ill. ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76750.","productDescription":"210 leaves in various pagings :ill. ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142613,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0750/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38134,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0750/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699dd5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McHugh, Stuart","contributorId":8852,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McHugh","given":"Stuart","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161125,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The beds above and below the injection zone were subjected to attack by the acid waste. By 1969, effects of the waste were detected in the water of the well monitoring the upper part of the Floridan aquifer at 1,400 feet. The disposal well was deepened late in 1971 to 2,242 feet in an attempt to stop the upward migration of waste. The results of research investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey during 1966-73 indicated that the waste continued to move upward and laterally. This investigated, continued by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1973-1975, shows that the remedial actions of repairing the disposal well liner and injecting periodically into the deep monitor well at 2,060 feet failed to contain the wastes within the lower part of the Floridan aquifer. The data collected by the Survey are supported by the owner 's chemical-oxygen-demand and pH determinations. An additional 10 to 15 million acre-feet (12,000 to 18,000 cubic hectometers) containing 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids is estimated to be available for use in the future with appropriate desalinization. \r\n\r\nLower Cretaceous rocks crop out from Washington County on the north to Comanche County on-the south. The rocks dip from a structural high in the southwest part of the State to structural lows in the northwest and north-central part. Depth below land surface increases generally northwestward to about 2,600 feet (790 meters); thickness of the rocks increases westward, nearly zero to about 850 feet (260 meters). The rocks consist chiefly of marine to nonmarine shale and silt- stone interbedded with coastal to deltaic sandstone. The interbedded sandstone, which composes about one-third of the rocks, consists of one or more lenses that thicken westward to about 400 feet (120 meters) in the central part of western Kansas.\r\n\r\nThe yield of water to individual wells is related to areal extent, thickness, and interconnection of the sand lenses and to grain size and cementation of the sand. Large amounts of water may be pumped by wells where loosely cemented sand lenses are interconnected. Wells commonly yield adequate supplies for domestic and stock use; reported yields from municipal and irrigation wells range from about 100 to 2,000 gallons per minute (6 to 125 liters per second). \r\n\r\nRecharge to the Lower Cretaceous-rocks occurs in the area of outcrop and from hydraulically connected saturated Cenozoic rocks, especially in the southern part of the State. Movement of water is principally northeastward from areas of recharge to areas of discharge where streams intersect the sandstone outcrops. \r\n\r\nWater in the sandstone aquifers commonly is confined between beds of relatively impermeable shale, causing water in wells to rise above the top of the aquifer. Water levels fluctuate in response to changes in atmospheric pressure, recharge, and discharge; greatest fluctuations result from discharge to wells for municipal and irrigation use. Progressive declines in water levels have occurred where irrigation withdrawals exceed recharge. \r\n\r\nCalcium bicarbonate water is dominant near recharge areas; mixed sodium and calcium bicarbonate water and sodium chloride water become successively dominant as the water moves downgradient from the recharge areas. The quality of water ranges from fresh to very saline (less than 1.000 to 35,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids). In the areas of generally fresh water, localized areas of calcium sulfate water result from solution of gypsum in the Kiowa Formation, and areas of sodium chloride water result from contamination by oil-field brines.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76776","usgsCitation":"Keene, K.M., and Bayne, C.K., 1976, Groundwater from Lower Cretaceous rocks in Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-776, 64 leaves :ill. maps (some col., 3 fold.) ;28 cm.; (4 sheets, scale 1:1,000,000 - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76776.","productDescription":"64 leaves :ill. maps (some col., 3 fold.) ;28 cm.; (4 sheets, scale 1:1,000,000 - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141191,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37515,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37516,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37517,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37518,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37519,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"1000000","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635ce5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keene, Katherine M.","contributorId":17994,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keene","given":"Katherine","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160256,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bayne, Charles Knight","contributorId":35313,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bayne","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"Knight","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160257,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

NAWDEX is not a depository of water data; its objectives are to provide the user with sufficient information to define what data are available, where these data may be obtained, and in what form they are available; also to describe some of their major characteristics. NAWDEX is comprised of water-oriented organizations in the Federal, State, and local governments, and in the academic and private sectors of the water-data community who work together to make their water data readily and conveniently available. Data search and referral services are currently provided through the Program Office established by the U.S. Geological Survey which has the lead-role responsibility for NAWDEX operations. During its first year of operation, a computerized Water Data Sources Directory was developed which identifies more than 300 organizations that collect water data, the types of data they collect, and the locations within these organizations from which the data may be obtained. Several design conditions were analyzed for their effect on the 100-year profile. Analyses were made to determine the effect of both removal and retention of the existing Sherwood Road bridge and roadway embankment 750 feet downstream from the proposed site. The normal water-surface elevation (without the bridge) at the proposed site would be 1,345.2 feet for the 50-year flood and 1 ,345.6 feet for the 100-year flood if the existing Sherwood Road bridge and embankment were retained, and would be 1,344.8 feet and 1,345.1 feet for the 50- and 100-year flood, respectively, if the bridge and roadway embankment were removed. The magnitudes of the 50- and 100-year floods at the proposed site would be 8,300 cubic feet per second and 9,300 cubic feet per second, respectively. Landsat color composite images, at 1:250,000 scale and acquired on two dates during the 1975 growing season, were interpreted. Irrigated lands were delineated manually, and the irrigated area was estimated, based on dot-grid sampling of the manually delineated lands. The image interpretation estimate of irrigated area was then adjusted by a comparison of interpretation results with ground data on 45 sample plots, each 1 mi2 (2.6 km2) in size.</p><p>Two interpreters independently estimated the irrigated area. &nbsp;Their adjusted estimates were 285,000 acres (115,000 ha) and 267,000 acres (108,000 ha) respectively, with corresponding 95 percent confidence intervals of ±19,500 acres (7,880 ha) and ±34,700 acres (14,000 ha). Several sedimentary features have been observed in the data, The bank is recognized as a compound feature resulting from erosion of Tertiary coastal-plain strata followed by deposition of an extensive sediment wedge on the western flank of the cuesta. Marine planation (probably Late Pleistocene) truncated this bank morphology producing an erosion surface roughly paralleling the present sea floor. The truncated bank surface is blanketed by a veneer of complex Late Pleistocene drift which masks underlying features and is being reworked by modern processes. Present bank morphology is inferred-to be arather recent development. \r\n\r\nA proper understanding of the significance of complex bank sediments with respect to the potential geologic hazards of drilling or placement of bottom. supported structures necessitates a more detailed seismic reflection program, in conjunction with geotechnical analysis of core-samples.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76874","usgsCitation":"Lewis, R.S., and Sylwester, R., 1976, Shallow sedimentary framework of Georges Bank: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-874, 11 [i.e. 22] leaves :ill.
