Lake Crowley is the largest single source of water for the city of Los Angeles. More than 50 percent of the water entering the Los Angeles-Owens River aqueduct flows through Lake Crowley. Arsenic enters Lake Crowley primarily from hot springs in Long Valley.
Sixty percent of the arsenic discharged to Lake Crowley is from hot springs in Hot Creek Gorge. The hot-spring water containing about 1,000 micrograms per litre of arsenic blends with the water flowing in the creek and is usually diluted to a concentration of about 200 micrograms per litre; additional dilution occurs downstream.
About 75 percent of the arsenic in Hot Creek is discharged from only two springs. The remaining sources of arsenic in the gorge are poorly defined seepage and flow from numerous small springs.
Other sources of arsenic in Long Valley are from either high volume and low-arsenic concentration springs, such as the springs at Hot Creek Fish Hatchery, or high-concentration and low-volume springs, such as those found in the vicinity of the Alkali lakes. These other sources individually are small in comparison with the source in Hot Creek Gorge. It seems unlikely that arsenic from these sources could cause the arsenic concentration in Lake Crowley to exceed the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended criterion (limit) for a public water supply.

At Panoche Hills in central California, an area formerly used by motorcycles together with an adjacent unused area were monitored from 1971 to 1975. Observations in both areas included measurements of precipitation, runoff, soil moisture, soil bulk density, plant cover, and erosion surveys. At Dove Spring Canyon in southern California erosion was measured on a site that is currently being used for motorcycle hill-climbing. At the Panoche Hills site, the area used by motorcycles produced about eight times as much runoff as the unused area. Similarly, sediment yield from the used areas was 857 cubic meters/sq km, while the quantity of sediment from the unused area was not measurable by standard methods. At the Dove Spring Canyon site, which is still being used for hill-climbing, erosion surveys show that degradation in trails has been as much as 0.3 m in the period 1973-75. Compaction of soils and reduction of permeability appears to be the most serious hydrologic impact of motorcycle use at Panoche Hills. Increased bulk density of soils reduces depth of moisture penetration which deprives plants of moisture needed for growth. (Woodard-USGS)

Analyses of the ratios of the stable isotopes of carbon, sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen were inconclusive as to the source of the salt water, but were consistent with the hypothesis that the ship channel is the source. Estimates of the amount of vertical leakage indicate that the quantity of salt water encroaching from the surface or near surface to the Chicot aquifer, including leakage from the Houston Ship Channel, is not sufficient to appreciably alter the inorganic chemical quality of the ground water in any large segment of the aquifer. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included.
This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically first by quadrangle and second by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, claim names, and the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects; and a section that lists, by author, all references summarized in the first section.

A network of observation wells has been established near the sites, and data have been collected from the wells and from nearby streams. Ground-water mounds have built up under the lagoons as percolation of effluents occurred. Percolating effluents mix with ground water and form plumes of ground water that contain chemical constituents for the effluents. Each plume tends to move down the hydraulic gradient in a direction generally perpendicular to the water-level contours. Water-level contours and most likely areas of movement of the plumes are shown on maps. Tests using rhodamine WT dye and dissolved solids as tracers suggested that chemical constituents in the plumes travel at different velocities as a result of dispersion and adsorlption. Chemical constituents from effluent percolating from the Old Faithful lagoons probably discharge into nearby Iron Spring Creek. Constituents from lagoons at the other three sites studied probably have not reached nearby streams or lakes.
