Several formulations of Avitrol are available to pest control applicators for use in agricultural areas. Although individual treated bait particles contain from 0.5 to 3.0% 4-AP, the amount present in the 14 federally registered products ranges from 0.3 to 1.0%, depending on the proportion of treated to untreated particles in the ready-to-use baits. Individual birds in depredating flocks ingesting 1 or more of the treated particles exhibit erratic behavior which frightens other birds in the flock. Tree-ring indices of white pine (Pinus strobus L.), eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Cart.), pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.), and chestnut oak (Quercus prinus L.) were regressed against orthogonally transformed values of temperature and precipitation in order to derive a response-function relationship. Results of the regression analyses for three time periods, 1901–1920, 1926–1945, and 1954–1973 suggest that the relationship of tree growth to climate has been altered. Statistical tests of the temperature and precipitation data suggest that this change was nonclimatic. Temporally, the shift in growth response appears to correspond with the suspected increase in acid rain and air pollution in the Shawangunk Mountain area of southeastern New York in the early 1950's. This change could be the result of physiological stress induced by components of the acid rain-air pollution complex, causing climatic conditions to be more limiting to tree growth.
","language":"English","publisher":"Alliance of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Societies ","doi":"10.2134/jeq1982.00472425001100030011x","usgsCitation":"Puckett, L., 1982, Acid rain, air pollution, and tree growth in southeastern New York: Journal of Environmental Quality, v. 11, no. 3, p. 376-381, https://doi.org/10.2134/jeq1982.00472425001100030011x.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"376","endPage":"381","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":338329,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.19091796875,\n              43.34116005412307\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.32275390625,\n              43.628123412124616\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.431640625,\n              42.06560675405716\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.3662109375,\n              41.95131994679697\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.99267578125,\n              41.57436130598913\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.828125,\n              40.96330795307353\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.47656249999999,\n              41.32732632036622\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.19091796875,\n              43.34116005412307\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"11","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58d63042e4b05ec799131127","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Puckett, L.J.","contributorId":27503,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Puckett","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":686156,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Major sand bodies present in the blocked-canyon intraslope basins are used to determine the sedimentary history of the Tertiary and Quaternary of this area. During relative lowering of sea level, coarse silt and sand temporarily stored near the shelf break were transported by gravity mechanisms and deposited within submarine canyons tending to nullify diapiric movement. Seismic records show these sediments as transparent to semitransparent onlapping seismic reflections. During low stands and rises in sea level, large amounts of mud were transported mainly as mud turbidites (rec rded as indistinct, parallel, onlapping seismic reflections), and it is during this stage that diapiric activity begins. Pelagic and hemipelagic sediments dominate during sea level high stands (recorded as distinct parallel seismic reflections) and drape the canyons and surrounding sea floor. Extensive uplift breaks up the depositional units and eventually disrupts the continuity of canyon systems. Samples of surface water were analyzed Environmental Protection Agency ' priority pollutants, ' including acid extractable, base/neutral extractable and volatile organic compounds, in addition to selected dissolved inorganic constituents. Surficial bed material at selected locations was examined for trace metals, insecticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and base/neutral extractable organic compounds. Trace levels (1-50 micrograms per liter) of purgeable organic compounds, particularly those associated with the occurrence of hydrocarbons, were found in about 60% of the water samples taken. DDT, DDD, DDE, PCB 's and chlordane are present in most surficial bed material samples. Diazinon was the only organophosphorous insecticide detected in the study (1.6 micrograms per kilogram at one location). High values for select trace metals in bed material were discovered at two locations. Of the 10 sites sampled, the surficial bed material containing the most contamination was found along one cross section of Raccoon Creek at Bridgeport. An additional analysis of Raccoon Creek revealed bed material containing toluene, oil and grease, and trace quantities of 15 base/neutral extractable organic compounds, including polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalate esters, and chlorinated benzenes.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri8236","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Hochreiter, J.J., 1982, Chemical-quality reconnaissance of the water and surficial bed material in the Delaware River estuary and adjacent New Jersey tributaries, 1980-81: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-36, vii, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8236.","productDescription":"vii, 41 p.","numberOfPages":"50","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","temporalStart":"1980-01-01","temporalEnd":"1981-12-31","costCenters":[{"id":470,"text":"New Jersey Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":158491,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_82_36.gif"},{"id":415449,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35530.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":261852,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/wri82-36/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":261853,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/wri82-36/pdf/wrir82-36.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","otherGeospatial":"Delaware River estuary","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -75.55,\n 40.144\n ],\n [\n -75.55,\n 39.9\n ],\n [\n -74.702,\n 39.9\n ],\n [\n -74.702,\n 40.144\n ],\n [\n -75.55,\n 40.144\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dee4b07f02db5e29ea","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hochreiter, Joseph J. Data from thermistors set at fixed depths in two wells were collected twice each week, and vertical temperature profiles of the remaining 18 wells were made monthly. Ground-water temperature at 8 feet below land surface in well Jc55-1 ranged from 45.0 degrees F in February to 70.1 degrees F in September. Temperature at 35 feet below land surface in the same well reached a minimum of 56.0 degrees F in August, and a maximum of 57.8 degrees F in February. Average annual temperature of ground water at 25 feet below land surface in all wells ranged from 54.6 degrees F to 57.8 degrees F. Variations of average temperature probably reflect the presence or absence of forestation in the recharge areas of the wells. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory recorded two major earthquake swarms located there in 1971–1972 and 1975 which were probably associated with submarine eruptions or intrusions. The swarms were located very close to Loihi's bathymetric summit, except for earthquakes during the second stage of the 1971–1972 swarm, which occurred well onto Loihi's southwest flank. The flank earthquakes appear to have been triggered by the preceding activity and possible rifting along Loihi's long axis, similar to the rift-flank relationship at Kilauea volcano. Other changes accompanied the shift in locations from Loihi's summit to its flank, including a shift from burst to continuous seismicity, a rise in maximum magnitude, a change from small earthquake clusters to a larger elongated zone, a drop in b value, and a presumed shift from concentrated volcanic stresses to a more diffuse tectonic stress on Loihi's flank. The 1971–1972 swarm began at depths of 20–50 km about 1 month before the shallow swarm started and suggests an upward migration of seismicity as the first stage of the 13-month swarm. The seismic ‘root’ of Kilauea volcano is well defined by earthquakes which plunge to the south and southwest to a depth of 50–60 km, terminating in a region in which earthquakes are associated with deep harmonic tremor and magma. The zone of these deeper earthquakes and tremor lies between Kilauea, Loihi, and Mauna Loa volcanoes, may feed magma to all three volcanoes, and probably locates the Hawaiian hot spot.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/JB087iB09p07719","issn":"01480227","usgsCitation":"Klein, F.W., 1982, Earthquakes of Loihi submarine volcano and the Hawaiian hot spot: Journal of Geophysical Research Solid Earth, v. 87, no. Results are based chiefly on zircons (1% Hf) and whole rocks: zircons are shown to be reliable carriers of essentially the initial Hf itself when properly chosen on the basis of U-Pb studies. Pre-3.0 Gy gneisses were apparently derived from an unfractionated mantle, but both depleted and undepleted mantle are evident as magma sources from 2.9 Gy to present. This mantle was sampled mainly from major crustal growth episodes 2.8, 1.8 and 0.7 Gy ago, all of which show gross heterogeneity of 176Hf/177Hf in magma sources from ??Hf=0 to +14, or about 60% of the variability of the present mantle. The approximate ??Hf=2??Nd relationship in ancient and modern igneous rocks shows that 176Lu/177Hf fractionates in general twice as much as 147Sm/144Nd in mantle melting processes. This allows an estimation of the relative value of the unknown bulk solid/liquid distribution coefficient for Hf. DLu/DHf=??? 2.3 holds for most mantle source regions. For garnet to be an important residual mantle phase, it must hold Hf strongly in order to preserve Hf-Nd isotopic relationships. The ancient Hf initials are consistent with only a small proportion of recycled older cratons in new continental crust, and with quasi-continuous, episodic growth of the continental crust with time. However, recycling of crust less than 150 My old cannot realistically be detected using Hf initials. The mantle shows clearly the general positive ??Hf resulting from a residual geochemical state at least back to 2.9 Gy ago, and seems to have repeatedly possessed a similar degree of heterogeneity, rather than a continuously-developing depletion. This is consistent with a complex dynamic disequilibrium model for the creation, maintenance and destruction of heterogeneity in the mantle. ?? 1981 Springer-Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"Springer-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF00398923","issn":"00107999","usgsCitation":"Jonathan, P.P., Kouvo, O., Hedge, C., and Tatsumoto, M., 1982, Evolution of continental crust and mantle heterogeneity: Evidence from Hf isotopes: Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, v. 78, no. 3, p. 279-297, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00398923.","startPage":"279","endPage":"297","numberOfPages":"19","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":205116,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00398923"},{"id":221396,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"78","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0d7ee4b0c8380cd53056","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jonathan, Patchett P.","contributorId":85323,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jonathan","given":"Patchett","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":362238,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kouvo, O.","contributorId":50658,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kouvo","given":"O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":362235,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hedge, C. The instrument also may be well suited for sampling freshly flocculated or precipitated material from the sea floor, for example in estuaries or around thermal vents on mid ocean ridges.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society for Sedimentary Geology","doi":"10.1306/212F7FBD-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Bothner, M., and Valentine, P.C., 1982, A new instrument for sampling flocculent material at the water/sediment interface: Journal of Sedimentary Research, v. 52, no. 2, p. 639-640, https://doi.org/10.1306/212F7FBD-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D.","productDescription":"2 p.","startPage":"639","endPage":"640","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":345694,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"52","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59ba43bae4b091459a5629c9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bothner, Michael H. mbothner@usgs.gov","contributorId":139855,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bothner","given":"Michael H.","email":"mbothner@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":710293,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Valentine, Page C. 0000-0002-0485-6266 pvalentine@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0485-6266","contributorId":1947,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Valentine","given":"Page","email":"pvalentine@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":710294,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In the first experiment we compared accumulation of contaminants by yellow perch of hatchery and lake origin and found that after 10 days of exposure to nonaerated sediments, fish of hatchery origin accumulated PCBs and Fe, while fish of lake origin accumulated As, Cr, Fe, and Na. Two additional exposures were conducted to evaluate the effects of aerating the sediments prior to measuring bioavailability of associated contaminants. Fish of hatchery origin exposed to nonaerated sediments for 10 days accumulated PCBs and Hg, while fish of hatchery origin exposed to aerated sediments for 10 days accumulated PCBs, DDE, Zn, Fe, Cs, and Se. These results demonstrated not only the potential for uptake of contaminants by fish as a result of dredging but also the potential utility of fish bioassays in evaluating proposed dredging operations.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Environmental Science and Technology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.1021/es00102a006","usgsCitation":"Seelye, J.G., Hesselberg, R.J., and Mac, M.J., 1982, Accumulation by fish of contaminants released from dredged sediments: Environmental Science & Technology, v. 16, no. 8, p. 459-464, https://doi.org/10.1021/es00102a006.","productDescription":"p. 459-464","startPage":"459","endPage":"464","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266678,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/es00102a006"},{"id":133255,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"16","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a353b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Seelye, James G.","contributorId":69919,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seelye","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308424,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hesselberg, Robert J.","contributorId":36074,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hesselberg","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308423,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mac, Michael J.","contributorId":16772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mac","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308422,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Reproducibility of biodegradation in the RDA test was analyzed under conditions in which the test is commonly done. Biodegradation results were not reproducible for di-2-ethylexyl phthalate (DEHP) and phthalic acid in replicated RDA tests using Missouri River water. Chemical and biological changes during the RDA tests probably reflected relative laboratory conditions. Initial suspended solids and subsequent DEHP biodegradation were directly related. Interpretation of RDA test results is enhanced by replicating experiments and comparing biodegradation of the test compound with a compound whose degradation properties are known. However, biodegradation measured with the RDA test is too variable and too dependent on laboratory treatment of samples to apply results directly to the aquatic environment.
","language":"English","publisher":"Water Environment Federation","usgsCitation":"Wylie, G.D., Jones, J., and Johnson, B., 1982, Evaluation of the river die-away biodegradation test: Journal of the Water Pollution Control Federation, v. 54, no. 8, p. 1231-1236.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"1231","endPage":"1236","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129843,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269371,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/25041661"}],"volume":"54","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa25a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wylie, Glenn D. 0000-0002-7061-6658 glenn_wylie@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7061-6658","contributorId":3052,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wylie","given":"Glenn","email":"glenn_wylie@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":315666,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jones, John R.","contributorId":48459,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jones","given":"John R.","affiliations":[{"id":6754,"text":"University of Missouri","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":315665,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Johnson, B.
