This reach is approximately 240 miles (386 kilometres) long, measured along the center of the channel, and has a drainage area of about 19,700 square miles (51,000 square kilometres) at its downstream end.</p>\n<p>A solution of Rhodamine BA, a fluorescent dye, was injected into the river at selected sites. Water samples were collected throughout the study reach and were analyzed, by use of a fluorometer, for dye concentration.</p>\n<p>Time-of-travel data have been related to stream discharge and to distance along the river channel. These relations permit the estimation of travel time for a water-soluble contaminant moving between any two points within the study reach at any desired discharge in the lower-to- medium flow range.</p>\n<p>The range of discharge for these studies was from 1,560 ft3/s (44.2 m3/s) to 4,330 ft3/s (123 m3/s) at the Wilkes-Barre, Pa. gaging station. The cuttings material from the upper part of the drillhole is chiefly unconsolidated mud and silt. Soft siltstone fragments occur at about 1,400 feet and increase in amount down to 2,400 feet. Some pebbles are found above 2,400 feet, but the pebble-rich horizons are less distinctive than the pebble zone in the Mesa 6-1 drillhole. Below 2,400 feet, cuttings ape composed of about two-thirds siltstone and one-third sandstones, ranging from very fine to very coarse sand, plus loose Sand grains. Although below 2,400 feet there is no systematic change in color of siltstones, grain size, or cementation with depth, horizons composed predominantly of loose sand are more common at deeper levels. Fragments of igneous and metamorphic rocks are less common than in the Mesa 6-1 drillhole. Quartz, calcite, K-feldspar, plagioclase (albite), illite, and mixed layer clays are identified by X-ray diffractograms of whole-rock samples throughout the hole. Chlorite occurs in all samples from below 2,100 feet, and probably also occurs at shallower depths. In most siltstones, montmorillonite occurs only down to the interval 2,200-2,300 feet, but in the buff siltstone it is found to the bottom of the drillhole. Kaolinite occurs at least down to 4,700 feet. Dolomite is found down to at least 5,970 feet, but is generally absent from horizons composed mostly of loose sand. Pyrite occurs in many samples. No zeolites, ankerite, or amorphous sulfur were detected. Theme is no horizon that may be used fop conclusive correlation with the Mesa 6-1 drillhole.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7688","usgsCitation":"Fournier, R., 1976, A study of the mineralogy and lithology of cuttings from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation MESA 6-2 Drillhole, Imperial County, California, including comparisons with MESA 6-1 Drillhole: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-88, 57 leaves :ill., map ;31 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7688.","productDescription":"57 leaves :ill., map ;31 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147303,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0088/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":42181,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0088/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a6137","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fournier, R.B.","contributorId":63406,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fournier","given":"R.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168181,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Mapping of the Precambrian rock units enables the recognition of four major units which are, from bottom to top, 1) Granitic Gneiss (alaskite), 2) Lower Marble, 3) Major Gneiss, and 4) Upper Marble. Additionally, lenses of amphibolite and granite occur as intrusives within this succession. These rock units have been complexly deformed by three major folding episodes, and by two distinctly different styles of faulting. The result has been to produce large northeast-southwest trending dome and basin structures. Two seepage runs, one in October 1973, and the other in September 1974, showed that most of the low flow is combined treated-sewage and industrial cooling-water discharge. This effluent was 4.66 cubic feet per second (1.3 cubic metres per second) on September 19, 1974, and discharged into the headwaters of the Pike River; near the mouth the discharge was essentially the same. During drought this effluent could be lost gradually by evapotranspiration and by seepage to the ground-water reservoir. The Q7,2 discharge estimate near the mouth is 0.0 cubic foot per second. Generally, water from wells south of Valdosta is high in hydrogen sulfide; water from wells north of the city is high in color. Water with high sulfate is likely to be a problem in wells deeper than about 540 ft. Heavy pumpage concentrated in a small area may cause high-sulfate water to migrate vertically upward into shallower wells. The purpose of the investigation was to assist the operations office in characterizing the burial sites as to present environmental safety and as to their suitability for long-term storage (several thousand to tens of thousands of years) of radioactive sol id wastes. \r\n\r\nThe burial ground sites fall into two classifications: (1) those on the low stream terraces adjacent to the Columbia River, mainly in the 100 Areas and 300 Area, and (2) those lying on the high terraces south of Gable Mountain in the 200 Areas. Evaluation of the suitability of the burial grounds for long-term storage was made almost entirely on hydrologic, geologic, and topographic criteria. Of greatest concern was the possibility that radionuclides might be leached from the buried wastes by infiltrating water and carried downward to the water table. The climate is semi-arid and the average annual precipitation is 6.4 inches at the Hanford Meteorological Station. However, the precipitation is seasonally distributed with about 50 percent occurring during the months of November, December, January, and February when evapotranspiration is negligible and conditions for infiltration are most favorable. None of the burial grounds are instrumented with monitoring devices that could be used to determine if radionuclides derived from them are reaching the water table. \r\n\r\nBurial grounds on the low stream terraces are mainly underlain by permeable materials and the water table lies at relatively shallow depths. Radionuclides conceivably could be leached from these burial grounds by percolating soil water, and radionuclides might reach the Columbia River in a relatively short time. These sites could also be inundated by erosion during a catastrophic flood. For these reasons, they are judged to be unsuited for long-term storage. Local conditions at several of these burial grounds are particularly unfavorable from the standpoint of safety. Depressions and swales at some burial grounds, such as numbers 4 and 5 in the 300 Area in which runoff can collect, enhance the possibility of water infiltrating through the buried wastes and transporting radionuclides to the water table. Also, during a high stage of the Columbia River, the water table conceivably could rise into burial grounds l and 2 of the 100 F Area. Most of the burial grounds on the low terraces contain either (1) reactor components and related equipment bearing activation products, principally cobalt-60, or (2) less hazardous radioactive materials such as uranium. The inventory of activation products in these burial grounds will decay to a safe level in a relatively short period of time (about 100 years), according to estimates made by C. D. Corbit, Douglas United Nuclear, Inc., 1969. The inventory of radionuclides is not considered by the ERDA staff to be complete, however. At these burial grounds containing activation products or less hazardous materials, investigations should be made of the radioactivity in soil and ground water beneath selected representative sites to verify that radionuclides are not migrating from the burial grounds. If migration is detected, field investigations should be made to determine the source or sources of the radionuclides and the desirability of removing the source wastes. Other burial grounds on the low terraces contain plutonium and fission products, which require long-term storage. Both the 300 WYE and the 300 North burial grounds are reported to contain plutonium in large quantities. Burial ground no. l in the 300 Area reportedly also contains plutonium. The inventory records of any other burial grounds on the low terraces suspected of containing plutonium should be reviewed to determine if pl","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Further tests suggested that the 0 to 30 Hz bandwidth of the standard system (8 data channels) might be increased substantially, at the 'price' of reducing the number of data channels to 3 or 4, without serious loss of dynamic range if subtractive compensation could be implemented effectively with the broader-band system. \r\n","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7687","usgsCitation":"Eaton, J.P., 1976, Notes on a broad-band variant of the NCER seismic data multiplex system for use with field tape recorders: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-87, ii, 18, [50] leaves :ill.; (71 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7687.","productDescription":"ii, 18, [50] leaves :ill.; (71 p. - PGS)","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145447,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":14265,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0087/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db696a19","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eaton, Jerry P.","contributorId":22341,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eaton","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Because of its simplicity and the ease with which it can be adapted for the purpose, the PI 5100 field recorder should be considered for such use. In the tests described here, a PI 5100 was speeded up to run at 15/16 inches per second (ips) and signals from the standard multiplex system test modulator bank were recorded on one tape track by means of a simple, improvised AM record amplifier. The results of these tests are extremely encouraging: the dynamic range of the system when played back on the Bell and Howell Model 3700 B reproduce machine, with subtractive compensation, is nearly as high as for the system employing the B&H 3700 B for recording. \r\n\r\nThese notes indicate the principle employed to speed up the recorder, outline the circuit required to drive the tape heads in the AM record mode, and describe the tests carried out to evaluate the system's performance.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA.","doi":"10.3133/ofr76252","usgsCitation":"Eaton, J.P., 1976, 15/16 ips Operation of the Precision Instrument Company Model P15100 tape recorder to record the standard (30 Hz) NCER seismic data multiplex system: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-252, ii, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76252.","productDescription":"ii, 32 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":145444,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/OFR_76_252.gif"},{"id":257327,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0252/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd490de4b0b290850eed6b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eaton, Jerry P.","contributorId":22341,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eaton","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167837,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The lakes are: Summit, Upper Trail, and Skilak, all on the Kenai Peninsula, and Eklutna, northeast of Anchorage (fig. 1). Interest in these lakes was stimulated by hypotheses developed from a study of sediments in Van Norman Reservoir, California, after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake (Sims, 1973). During that study three zones of deformational structures were found and correlated with moderate earthquakes that shook the San Fernando area in 1930, 1952, and 1971. Results of that study, coupled with the experimental formation of deformational structures similar to those from Van Norman Reservoir, led to a search for similar structures in Pleistocene and Holocene lakes and lake sediments in other seismically active areas. The lakes for this study were chosen specifically because of their location within the area affected by the 1964 Prince William Sound earthquake, and the probability of obtaining varved sediments which would allow counting of years between sedimentologic events.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76373","usgsCitation":"Rymer, M.J., and Sims, J.D., 1976, Preliminary survey of modern glaciolacustrine sediments for earthquake-induced deformational structures, south-central Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-373, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76373.","productDescription":"20 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424897,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0373/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148680,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0373/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"south-central Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -152.43345988424275,\n              61.66721907817728\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.43345988424275,\n              59.12721201961355\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.898929065904,\n              59.12721201961355\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.898929065904,\n              61.66721907817728\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.43345988424275,\n              61.66721907817728\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aabe4b07f02db669957","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rymer, Michael J. mrymer@usgs.gov","contributorId":1522,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rymer","given":"Michael","email":"mrymer@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":171641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sims, John D.","contributorId":60202,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sims","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
