Several formulations of Avitrol are available to pest control applicators for use in agricultural areas. Although individual treated bait particles contain from 0.5 to 3.0% 4-AP, the amount present in the 14 federally registered products ranges from 0.3 to 1.0%, depending on the proportion of treated to untreated particles in the ready-to-use baits. Individual birds in depredating flocks ingesting 1 or more of the treated particles exhibit erratic behavior which frightens other birds in the flock. The site is underlain by 175 m of unconsolidated generally coarse-grained, alluvial-fan and flood-plain deposits. Major sand bodies present in the blocked-canyon intraslope basins are used to determine the sedimentary history of the Tertiary and Quaternary of this area. During relative lowering of sea level, coarse silt and sand temporarily stored near the shelf break were transported by gravity mechanisms and deposited within submarine canyons tending to nullify diapiric movement. Seismic records show these sediments as transparent to semitransparent onlapping seismic reflections. During low stands and rises in sea level, large amounts of mud were transported mainly as mud turbidites (rec rded as indistinct, parallel, onlapping seismic reflections), and it is during this stage that diapiric activity begins. Pelagic and hemipelagic sediments dominate during sea level high stands (recorded as distinct parallel seismic reflections) and drape the canyons and surrounding sea floor. Extensive uplift breaks up the depositional units and eventually disrupts the continuity of canyon systems. Islands ranged in size from 0.2 to 5.0 ha and were 60-1,600 m from the mainland. Cover available for nesting waterfowl was composed of grasses, legumes, and forbs with abundant residual plant material. In 1978 and 1980, 207 and 251 nests were found, respectively, of 10 waterfowl species primarily mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and gadwall (A. strepera). Densities of waterfowl nests were 10.9/ha in 1978 and 13.2/ha in 1980. Nest success averaged 86% for the 2 years. In general, darkening of an arid land surface indicates an increase in land quality while brightening indicates a decrease in quality, primarily owing to changes in vegetation. Landsat multiband images taken on different dates can be converted to black-and-white albedo images. Subtraction of one image from another, pixel by pixel, results in an albedo change map that can be density sliced to show areas that have brightened or darkened by selected percentages. These maps are then checked in the field to determine the reasons for the changes and to evaluate the changes in land condition and quality. A more diverse upland forest grows on the flood plain in the gorge The riparian forest in the gorge may be an example of a nonequilibrium forest, resulting from periodic disturbance by destructive floods. Trials with different Bouguer reduction densities indicate that this positive anomaly cannot be explained by an inappropriate choice of Bouguer reduction density but must be caused by a subvolcanic body. After separating the Medicine Lake gravity high from the regional field, we were able to fit the 27-mgal positive residual anomaly with a large, shallow body of high density contrast (+0.41 g/cm<sup>3</sup>) and a thickness of 2.5 km. The complexes generally contain a bimodal suite of cumulus mafic-ultramafic rocks and younger leucocratic rocks that include nepheline syenite and hornblende-biotite syenite in the McClure Mountain Complex, nepheline syenite pegmatite in the Gem Park Complex, and quartz syenite in the complex at Democrat Creek. The nepheline syenite and hornblende-biotite syenite at McClure Mountain (535??5m.y.) are older than the syenitic rocks at Democrat Creek (511??8m.y.). REE concentrations indicate that the nepheline syenite at McClure Mountain cannot be derived from the hornblende-biotite syenite, which it intrudes, or from the associated mafic-ultramafic rocks. REE also indicate that mafic-ultramafic rocks at McClure Mountain have a source distinct from that of the mafic-ultramafic rocks at Democrat Creek. In the McClure Mountain Complex, initial87Sr/86Sr ratios for mafic-ultramafic rocks (0.7046??0.0002) are similar to those of hornblende-biotite syenite (0.7045??0.0002), suggesting a similar magmatic source, whereas ratios for carbonatites (0.7038??0.0002) are similar to those of nepheline syenite (0.7038??0.0002). The accumulation and depletion of sand-sized bed material in a cross section was concentrated in the near-bank parts of the stream channel and thus significantly influenced bank stability and retreat. In those cross sections that scour at discharges greater than bankfull, the basal bank material is eroded and the banks become undercut and unstable. Conversely, in those cross sections that fill at discharges greater than bankfull, the basal bank material is covered by the accumulated sand-size material and is not eroded. Streambanks in these cross sections are moderately inclined and stable. A resurvey in the summer of 1980 of the cross sections located in straight reaches showed that those cross sections which scoured at discharges greater than bankfull had become 2–4 feet wider, whereas those cross sections which filled at discharges greater than bankfull were unchanged. In response to the volcanic activity, the U.S. Geological Survey intensified statewide surface and ground water sampling programs to determine the nature and magnitude of the volcanic-induced variations. Streams to the east of Mount St. Helens received the major ash fallout. Chemical effects were best noted in smaller streams sampled 60 to 70 miles northeast of Mount St. Helens. The chemical variations observed were pronounced but short lived. Sulfate and chloride increases in anionic composition were prevalent immediately following the eruption however, the original bicarbonate predominance was again attained within several days. Suspended iron and aluminum concentrations were similarly elevated during the period of greatest ash deposition (highest turbidity) however, the dissolved concentrations remained relatively constant. Depressions of pH were minor and short lived. Streams draining to the south, tributaries to the Columbia river, showed little observable changes in water chemistry. Streams draining to the west (Toutle river and its tributaries) were compositionally affected by the various volcanic activities. Chloride and sulfate anion percentage exceeded the bicarbonate percentage up to one month following the eruption</span><span> period. Streams and lakes sampled in the immediate vicinity of Mount St. Helens, in addition to trace metals, contained organic compounds derived from decomposing wood buried in the debris deposits. Wisconsin's wetlands OCCUf in depressions and on slopes. They may be in contact with ground water or totally surface-water supported. Hydrologically, wetlands may be classed as surface-water depression, surface-water slope, ground-water depression, or ground-water slope wetlands. Precipitation comprises more than half of the inflow to all but the ground-water slope wetlands, where ground water may provide as much as 90 percent of the inflow. Flood peaks may be as much as 80 percent lower in basins with much wetland area than in similar basins with little or no wetland area. Ground-water recharge appears to be less in basins with much wetland area than in basins with little or no wetland area. Wetlands retain sediment, and sediment loads in streams draining basins with much wetland area may be 90 percent lower than those in streams draining basins with little or no wetland The location of the saltwater-freshwater interface for both streams was described by multiple regression equations involving streamflow and tide stage. Low-flow frequency data were used with regression relationships to show the effect of withdrawals of freshwater from the Alafia River on the location of the saltwater interface. Examples are presented without storage and with storage and minimum streamflow requirements. In every case, the effect of reductions in streamflow was upstream encroachment of saltwater. Salinity in Hillsborough Bay in the vicinity of the Alafia River and Bullfrog Creek was evaluated using a salt-transport model for various freshwater inflow conditions. Model results indicate that freshwater inflow from these streams has the greatest effect on the salinity of areas closest to the mouth during periods of above average inflow.
