Geochemical exploration for this type of disseminated deposit depends upon recognizing the significance of this volatile suite and interpreting it in light of other geologic and geophysical data. One way of estimating the significance of the volatile suite is to determine enrichment factors. The enrichment factor is defined as abundance divided by crustal abundance or abundance divided by the local Clarke. Enrichment factors for the volatile suite in specific areas of the Edna Mountain quadrangle, Humboldt County, Nevada, interpreted with other geologic and geophysical factors, indicate that a potential for disseminated gold mineralization exists. Although most known disseminated gold deposits are exposed at the surface, the potential for finding additional buried or concealed deposits in north-central Nevada is high. Mapping of the Precambrian rock units enables the recognition of four major units which are, from bottom to top, 1) Granitic Gneiss (alaskite), 2) Lower Marble, 3) Major Gneiss, and 4) Upper Marble. Additionally, lenses of amphibolite and granite occur as intrusives within this succession. These rock units have been complexly deformed by three major folding episodes, and by two distinctly different styles of faulting. The result has been to produce large northeast-southwest trending dome and basin structures. Large well yields of 25 gal/min or more can be obtained in the study area by locating future wells on SKYLAB lineaments rather than on lineaments detected on either high-altitude aerial photographs, LANDSAT images, or by random drilling. Larger savings might be achieved by locating wells on lineaments detected by both stereo viewing and projection. The test site is underlain by dense, fractured, flat-lying limestones. Soil cover averages 4 ft thick in the Central Basin and about 40 ft thick on the Eastern Highland rim. Groundwater occurs mostly in horizontal, sheetlike solution cavities, and the trends of these cavities are controlled by joints. The cuttings material from the upper part of the drillhole is chiefly unconsolidated mud and silt. Soft siltstone fragments occur at about 1,400 feet and increase in amount down to 2,400 feet. Some pebbles are found above 2,400 feet, but the pebble-rich horizons are less distinctive than the pebble zone in the Mesa 6-1 drillhole. Below 2,400 feet, cuttings ape composed of about two-thirds siltstone and one-third sandstones, ranging from very fine to very coarse sand, plus loose Sand grains. Although below 2,400 feet there is no systematic change in color of siltstones, grain size, or cementation with depth, horizons composed predominantly of loose sand are more common at deeper levels. Fragments of igneous and metamorphic rocks are less common than in the Mesa 6-1 drillhole. Quartz, calcite, K-feldspar, plagioclase (albite), illite, and mixed layer clays are identified by X-ray diffractograms of whole-rock samples throughout the hole. Chlorite occurs in all samples from below 2,100 feet, and probably also occurs at shallower depths. In most siltstones, montmorillonite occurs only down to the interval 2,200-2,300 feet, but in the buff siltstone it is found to the bottom of the drillhole. Kaolinite occurs at least down to 4,700 feet. Dolomite is found down to at least 5,970 feet, but is generally absent from horizons composed mostly of loose sand. Pyrite occurs in many samples. No zeolites, ankerite, or amorphous sulfur were detected. S. Geological Survey began a regional reconnaissance in 1974. The study area, which extends from Prince William Sound on the west to Yakutat Bay on the east, is in a region fraught with natural hazards. The tectonic history of the area suggests that future major earthquakes could pose serious hazards to installations on the continental shelf or along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska. The hazard may be either direct, by ground shaking or fault displacement, or indirect, through ground failure or generation of tsunami waves. Although displacements are small (15to 60 m), the structures markedly affect the present distribution and thickness of Coastal Plain strata. Structure contour maps on Cretaceous and Paleocene lithostratigraphic units show that the amount of displacement on the structures increases downward, indicating recurrent movement. The major deformation occurred in the Cretaceous and middle(?) Tertiary but some movement in the latest Tertiary or Quaternary is possible. \r\n\r\nThe structures, herein named the Stafford fault system, extend for at least 56 kilometers parallel to the Fall Line and the northeast[trending reach of the Potomac estuary.
